I don't remember what game it was, but maybe Falcon 4.0, or one of the A-10 specific games years back. But I remember that in at least one of them, the A-10 was considered a bit of an underdog as a fighter, since it could carry 2 sidewinders on most of it's underwing hard points, which I think meant a maximum load out of 12 sidewinders on each jet. I wonder if DCS would allow for that?
I remember that game, around the time era of Falcon 2.0 release. Yes you could mount nearly anything on any pylon. Never had much luck with the Migs but it work well vs the enemy helicopters. In comparison Apache Longbow stingers worked too well. Not sure if DCS would allow it though.
You guys are a riot! Love that you take it serious yet have a good sense of humor. Was thinking how fun it would be with Korean War era aircraft. My "Final Countdown" twisted brain also thinks it'd be interesting to see a couple of WWII fighters against say 20-30 WWI era birds! 😆 (be fun to fly with you guys)
A-10 is NOT a fighter aircraft. Try an F-15, F-16 or F-35 USA discovered the way to beat slower aircraft was NOT to dogfight at all. Instead, gain altitude, swoop down until they are momentarily in your gunsights. Shoot, then scoot away before they can respond. This is how the Hellcat defeated the ZERO. A supersonic jet, even limited to cannons, would operate the same way. Swoop, shoot, scoot. Never dogfight with a slower, more maneuverable aircraft. Your superior speed makes it unnecessary.
I was stationed at RAF. Woodbridge/ Bentwaters in the early eighties! I love the A-10’s! Trivia, during WWII the runway was used as a B-17 recovery runway for bombers to shot up and unable to maneuver. Love Ipswich!
Hey GR, just a suggestion for a future mod you could make. In modern SEAD ops one important tool to use is aerial decoys; I know that core game has the ADM-141 TALD decoy, but a newer decoy currently in use is ADM-160 MALD that upgrades the range to 920 km. It would be interesting to see a more complete SEAD doctrine implemented into the game!
That’s a great idea! If I remember correctly, MALD also has a version which uses EW to simulate the radar return of other aircraft so it can make itself look like a real F-15, C-5, etc. to enemy radars.
@@totalnerd5674 On the other hand, there might be a workaround. Since it’s only launched from the F/A-18, you could try to make it imitate only the Hornet and, instead of using EW, set the TALD’s RCS to the identical value to the F/A-18’s and basically copy over all the relevant values. It seems like it might work… However, even a simple decoy with such an increased range, and with the ability to set its flight path, or make it loiter over a certain area still would be amazing.

Since it's a known that A-10s are not good for scramble-type intercepts, maybe a scenario should have them doing combat air patrol instead, maybe dispersed over a few thousand feet of altitude in the middle of the usual altitude range of most German raids (e.g., if Luftwaffe raids most often occur with low-altitude raids coming at 1,000 feet or less and higher-altitude raids coming at 20,000 feet or above, then have A-10s patrolling spread out vertically from 10,000 to 15,000 feet).
