Went to music of John Williams live orchestra on Saturday. They played ET theme I was sitting trying not to cry. I'm 47.
E.T. saved my life too. In 1982 my parents had just divorced out of nowhere ... and this film spoke to the sadness, the loneliness, the isolation, the inner silence and the pain and hurt ... and nurtured my heart in a way that my parents weren't available to do for me. In fact, i and my sister were nurturing THEM, as is often the case. Thank you for making E.T. ... everyone involved in this. WHat a lovely, true, resonant, heartful creation. I still remember when there were true blockbusters ... i grew up in Lethbridge,Alberta Canada .... and i saw E.T. at the Paramount theatre in cinema 1, the biggest screen in the city. And i remember the full page ads in the Herald .... proclaiming "16th magical week!" etc. I remember a black and white picture in the paper of E.T.'s hand tenuously reaching for the next M&M in the trail .... it was one of the first books I read.

This movie had a overwhelming effect on myself... when I watch this movie I always cry by the end... I’m not even 20 years old yet (February 2020 I will be)... honestly I’ve only seen the 1982 original version and I still have the 1982 VHS tape I got as a gift from my aunt almost 17 year’s ago... my aunt and I both love these kind of movies and tv shows like gory horror and sci-fi stuff and we are alike in so many other ways than just that, but I’m not gonna get into that rn... and I’m not gonna lie, when I was little the bit where E.T. and Elliot were sick and in quarantine made me too apprehensive to sleep in my own bed... but as I got older I came to really understand the movie as a whole and the underlying message Spielberg and team were trying to convey, trying to captivate the boys loneliness and longing for some comfort and someone to confide in such as a friend, someone to converse with... I connect with this movie on a profound level... I know that feeling well... though my parents are happily married, I was bullied in school which makes me connect on an even more proud level with the loneliness because when your being bullied, you get the feeling of loneliness and feelings of being singled out, but in the back of your mind you know you’re not completely alone because there are people all around the world getting bullied... I can also see this movie and understand it through the sociological standpoint of it being of a social issue... the social issue is a boy who’s lonely, longing for someone to confide in and understand him but can’t find anyone until E.T. Comes along... once E.T. arrives, he finally has someone but when E.T. gets sick, so does Elliot because they are connected from an emotional standpoint due to the fact that E.T. was left behind when his people left on the space ship without him and with that knowledge, Elliot feels the same way, but with him, it’s about his dad leaving for another woman... therefore Elliot can feel what he feels and connects with E.T. through the emotional pain of abandonment... in this case Elliot’s dad left, making him feel abandoned, lonely and voiceless. Now in E.T.’s case, his people accidentally left earth without him making him feel abandoned, lonely and voiceless...

What makes this film so wonderful and is sorely missing in films today is that the scenes are allowed to........breath!! They're not rushed and character can develop. Directors and studios today are too impatient with things.

Kasdan and Abrams found pacing and character development again .... i love films where the locations, the pace , are like characters and have an intrinsic quality of their own in the film. they tell the story too, when you LET them. Films are being served to audiences like a drug more often now .... originality and asking the audience to believe, to expand in their own imagination and to challenge their own acceptances are the best films.

Of all the movies I’ve seen in my 52 yrs on earth, this is my favorite. Then, now & forever.
Well I’m amazed here to see all these middle aged people still impressed with E.T. I’m 13 and first watched it when I was about 6 and I’m still obsessed. I love learning more about this movie and I’m excited for my future
And I hope you never lose that excitement for life! There's so much to explore and discover. Movies like E.T. can really inspire you to be the best you can be. It's awesome that you're so young but you're watching such old films.

Omg shocking how well Henry thomas turned on the tears during his audition, what an amazing little actor he was.
He wasn't acting, I think that he really thinks he had E.T. and was protecting him, great job Henry, WOW very emotional I had tears also.
Henry is perfectly Elliot. He is rather innocent and his reaction to when Steven says he's got the job tells you everything. He is one of those rare children who act ... and feel genuinely a child, genuinely themselves .... as if they are not being directed on how to ACT like a child. Awesome.
I like that Henry Thomas doesn't seem to be an over trained professional kid. He has an innocence that many kid actors are lacking today.
Fun fact: Sarah Michelle Gellar was one of the candidates for Gertie. Imagine the vampire slayer when she was about 5 or 6 playing Gertie. Thankfully, they chose Drew. She definitely is so perfect as Gertie.
This is an amazing documentary! All that footage from 1981, all the behind the scenes work, seeing Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore, and Robert Macnaughton in their childhood form of the early 1980's, seeing what Steven Spielberg looked like in the 1980's... incredibly nostalgic!! I sometimes wish time travel was possible, and I could hop into a time machine, and go be apart of these moments in 1981-82! Ugh... if only...
Those words "ill be right here " are so powerful to hear from a child the divorce and everything the fact that E.T unwillingly was forgotten on Earth for Elliot that single purpose there is too powerful i like e.t alot but at the same time i think Close Encounters really takes the cake that movie ran so E.T could walk just being fair.

They picked the right kid to play Elliot, Henry Thomas had to carry a lot of the emotional weight of the film and he does it brilliantly.
Spielberg was a great visionist. Great director. He was there fr the children teaching, directing, being a friend clowning. , real genius
Thanks for uploading this, E.T. is a movie that really resonated with me as a kid, and even today still does. I'm not quite sure what it is but I can't stop crying while watching the movie (probably something to do with my dad who passed away years ago.) Getting to see this about the production of the film is pretty cool and I appreciate it.

I have this on VHS tape still since I was 7 years old sure does bring me back childhood memories.

I got Metamorphosis which is the 2 volume book about Rick Baker’s career that was released recently and it had pictures of the aliens that he was making for Night Skies and his work looked pretty amazing. Rick was also planning on using a puppetry process called “anatomation” which was akin to the Go-motion that Phil Tippett had developed at ILM but as Baker put it “it’s not stop motion. It’s shot in real time before the camera. A lot of it is based on the way human anatomy works, which allows puppetry a step further.” Around the same time Rick was also working on the film that would win him his first Oscar (and consequently the the Academy Awards first award in the category of Best Makeup and Hairstyling) An American Werewolf in London, however midway through the development of both Night Skies and American Werewolf in London, Steven Spielberg decided to pull the plug on Night Skies, but according to Rick Baker it was anything but the happy understanding that Steven described here “He got mad and said that he was going to lock up this place and call Carlo Rambaldi. I was shocked.” However a few years later Steven Spielberg and Rick Baker would finally work together on Harry and the Hendersons for which Steven was a producer on, and before they began filming Harry they both reconciled over what happened on Night Skies.
This is a wonderful "making of" and my goodness the amount of love and creativity that went into this. The first time I saw ET I liked it but I didn't get rocked by it.. I was 13 at the time and the dirt bike riding scenes were my favorite lol. Watching it as an adult all of the "feels" that the story gets into are very visible and I really get just how wonderful this movie is. ET is also a wonderful alien, makes weird but cute noises.. the puppet is wonderful. This is a true "they don't make'm like this any more" situation..

It floored me how much America adored this creepy ass thing. I ran out of the room crying at summer camp when I saw that neck stretched, emaciated thing that made ungodly noises for the first time. Like, I literally hid and cried. It took two counselors to calm me down, and they laughed at me for being scared of "adorable" E.T. That was rare for a kid like me, because I didn't cry or scare easy. But THAT thing. That thing took the biscuit.
I even got a realistic E.T. doll for Christmas one year. It would stare at me from the loveseat in my room like that clown from Poltergeist, but everyone's like, cool, you got E.T.
I'm like cool, burn it with fire.
I got sick of it and threw it out the window one night and it got rained on.
Lots of people hate the CGI remaster. I normally hate CGI remasters, but E.T is an exception. At least he doesn't look like a half-dead, burnt flesh looking corpse nightmare feigning human facial expressions. I know he's an alien, so human expressions wouldn't make sense, but he's still scary. Screw you E.T. You ain't cute. I'll face Mike Myers before I face your spooky ass.

I think this is my favorite Steven Spielberg film. I loved Raiders of the Lost Ark and Poltergeist, but if I had to choose a film that filled me with wonder, imagination, and real emotion it has to be ET
I loved E.T. since I wss a kid . It came out when I was only 3 years old . The first time I seen this movie I was about 6 in 1985 and I CRIED MY EYES OUT . Still does to this day at 44 years old .

Taking a break from 2nd-year engineering coursework when E.T. was released, I went to the local theater nearest to campus where it was billed as the Saturday Matinee to watch it. Parking my truck in the little lot there, I saw dozens of bikes parked in neat rows along the theater’s front walls. A uniformed guard stood watch over them. I was the only adult in the audience, surrounded by what must have been every kid living within biking distance. When E.T. made his rescuers’ bikes fly, everyone leapt to their feet and cheered. Best movie audience ever.
I saw this in the cinema when i was 4 years old and i was hooked immediately
I'm watching this and at around 20 minutes in, Spielberg is talking about how expressive and wise and etc he wanted the eyes to be, how important a detail this was...and I found all that interesting having just watched Super 8. I was super impressed how the whole look of the alien in that movie seemed to change when the protective covers came off the eyes at the end, when it's holding and looking at the boy. That wizened intelligence came through.
I love Super 8, it came very close to reminding me what it felt like to go and see a Spielberg movie in the 80s. Aside from that though it was a tightly written script with incredible performances shot in what I would call a 'retro-modern' style. Which is to say, while it emulated much of the style of late 70s/early 80s films, it did so in a much more visually fluid way than they would have done back then (they probably wouldn't have shoved unnecessary and distracting lens flares into so many scenes either in fairness).

Collectively they totally captured the fragmentation of society in all its forms .... it really is genius. And when i meet people who say they re-watched it and say it doesn't "hold up" ... doesn't stand the test of time, or that it's not a "great" movie ... i know what they mean. They have succumbed to the very erosion and insidiousness that this film cries out about ... the fragmentation, the adult-ation that we are taught to defer to .... like when the government arrives in the film ... and the very distrust of our feelings that E.T. , as a film, is warning, or trying to remind us, is a lie, and is not true about us ... and that the bullshit is not real, not true. E.T. is what being alive in the universe, as a human, an alien being, or a geranium .... is truly about. It's about heart .... beingness. It's the invisible that is important, not the tangible. It is very much in the same vein as Antoine de Saint Exupery's "Le Petit Prince". This film is one of those that can reconnect you to your child ... and to respect it again ....

This film freaked the hell outta me.
I first watched it around Christmas when I must of been about 6.
After being cuddled up between mum and grandma from being scared after he screamed in the bedroom scene and the time his heart glows with the noises it made, I had too walk twelve steps up-to bed on my own, trying my best too avoid eye contact with the red alarm sensor in corner of the ceiling right above the top step..."nope"...didn't work!...me literally running too bed and putting covers over my head freaking out at the thought I might get touched by E.T and the noise when he screamed had pretty much took over in my head like my thoughts were 100% real, as if someone was literally stood next too me screaming in my face. That split second on I've been scared of certain noises and lights at night through my window.
Extremely terrifying 7 years afterwards, I'm still sleeping with a mini lamp on, in corner of the bedroom.
I shut every door in the house while looking over my shoulder at the thought that he is about too put his hand on me like he does too Elliot while looking out the window.
I'm now 30yrs old...😩
And have not changed.
Oh and:
Cornfields, Fridges at night, Opening the curtains at night, Listening too all time movie theme tunes, Watching TV on around Christmas,.....are all NO!!!!.

Like the fact that ET still says phone home. I remember though a doc I had seen back in the day and how Spielberg used descriptions of aliens from folks that said they were abducted to format the look. It wasn't mentioned at all here

Dang, if I had known someone posted this on youtube in full, I might not have sought out the deluxe laserdisc edition it's on.
Oh well, I like the film enough to want it on multiple formats and the picture quality is outstanding, on a 4:3 tv many would be fooled into thinking they were watching a dvd. And my player isn't that high end.
No loss there, having the laserdisc version is awesome :D

this film was just simply a magical time piece from Steven Spielberg a credit to Spielberg n his creation et ....was a loveable alien just magic the movie et the extra terrestrial xx
around 33 minutes ... Elliot, like all children who haven't been corrupted ... is expressing what is natural. The Continuum Concept. We are all taught to disregard our intuition, feelings in lieu of society and "intelligence" .... the so-called higher importance that we are all taught to defer to blindly .... It is these moments that come through in this film .... the wisdom of tears, of the body .... of just knowing what IS. We most of us go around PURSUING what is not separate from us. But we are told we are separated from ouselves, from others, from everything. So we spend our lives chasing .... and so we miss the moment ... and are cut off from our source. THis sounds really off topic .... but it's actually not ... it's why i love e.t. and so many things like it in this world ....
As a matter of fact, my all time favorite movies of Steven Spielberg's are Hook followed by this one and The BFG.

This documentary is bitter sweet..It gives I think way too much of the mystery away!!Now I'll never look at the movie the same way I now known the secrets being the scenes!!its almost no fun anymore

I read the novelization and inside the ship is just an insane amount of plants because he is a botanist and that's why they came to Earth.

It’s too bad about the frequent skips that cut off like 2 sentences each time. This was the first movie I recall seeing in theaters as a kid.

As far as I know, Pay Welsh was the main voice actor for e.t.(as well as misc animals, people, even a sick person's sleeping wife). I believe she was paid $380 and died of pneumonia in 1995. Kinda typical Hollywood selfishness. But maybe I'm wrong about her payment for a hugely iconic voicework

The TRUE story is that Steven was making "Dark Skies" which was about bad aliens attacking a farmhouse. That was shelved. An NYU student had sent a screenplay to Universal, and Steven saw it. He changed a few names and literally stole her screenplay. THAT is how E.T. came about.

Literally the same! I spent most of my childhood being utterly terrified by ET! So many scenes, the walk through the forest at the beginning, when Elliot first meet him, the part where ET looks down at Elliot when he is crying in the forest ( that in particular is utterly chilling, he looks terrifyingly scary ) & of course when he reached out when he is dying to the men in the space suit.... omg, my dreams were haunted by him from 1982 till almost 1990 when I was 12!! Still to this day, I worry if I think about him to much that I'll have a nightmare:.... the same recurring one I always had as a child.... I'm in my school classroom in Ireland, the lights are off, the chairs are up on the tables..... I turn around, I see the silhouette of ET.... moving towards me slowly.... I reach for the light.... switch it on..... ET appears, his neck rises & he lets out that haunting scream he gave when he met Elliot..... 😰😰😰😰
