I remember the quake that struck the central coast of Peru, I was playing outside with my friends, early morning of September 24, 1974, in a town 300 kilometers South of Lima, when suddenly all, but all the neighborhood dogs started barking, the we saw some cats of the roofs, a lady mentioned something bad was about to happen, a few seconds later we got shaken by a 7.8 quake and it lasted 3 very long minutes !
My dog is a GOOD earthquake detector too. The 6.0 Napa earthquake in Northern California back at the end of August threw my dog into a tizzy seconds before it happened. They are VERY perceptive.
I live in Southern California and my dog has done the same thing right before an earthquake. The last big one that we had, he actually jumped up on our bed and woke up my husband and I. They can feel the waves that us humans cannot.
On St. Patrick's day I were in Los Angeles on vacation and I remember how I were watching tv in the hotel I were staying at when everything just started to shake. I have never experienced a earthquake since i'm from Northern Europe so I thought it was a room above me that were building something lmao.

People there aren't used to them so everyone kind of freaked out. It is believed that dogs and cats can hear the initial "P" waves of earthquakes that precede the "S" waves that cause surface motion by up to several seconds, depending on how far away the epicenter is.
