Since gpt is entirely text based in its "understanding" (it technically doesn't understand anything but I dont wanna get into it), its phenomenal at translations if you prompt it correct and give it needed context.
This more likely is raw human incompetence/error.

Completely agree and it is a problem that is not talked about enough. Not only are the official English translations riddled with errors, but they completely misstep on any nuance, turn of a phrase, or "epic" moments that fan translators like TCB get right. It is honestly astonishingly bad.

You know what this makes so much sense, bcos whenever i read a leaked panel so basically a fan translation it was always easier for me to understand the content. But whenever I read the official translation I had to read the chp like 3 or 4 times to even get what it was saying, I thought I was just dumb but looking here I realize it was this john dude. No wonder it was harder to read it. But I don't think he is gonna go anywhere though.
I feel the same way. When ever I see leaked fan translation, like Sukuna saying he was an unwanted child, I get excited to read the panels. But then I can never find the panels and I get confused and wonder what I missed.

To me it seems as if he doesn't even read manga at all, but he still tries his hand at matching the vibes. I am somewhat familiar with the structure of japanese phrases, so I think I see the pattern here. I feel like the translator straight up translated word for word, retaining the same order, giving the translation a Yoda speech effect, since majority of Japanese phrases are similar to Yoda speech structure.

I agree that it is a problem. But let's dive into the problem why such thing happens. After you read the following, I hope you can appreciate Japanese translators more, especially if their translations are easier to understand.
The Japanese grammars are different from the language of the rest of the world.
Do you remember many anime scenes that has this sentences?
"We can't win... We are going to lose... NOT!"
That sounds very unnatural in English, is it not? What if I tell you, that it is PERFECTLY natural way of sentence Japanese made?
This is the Japanese words for that sentence:
「勝てない...負ける...じゃない!」
Those last 4 letters. It's called Jyanai. In English, it's easily translated as 'not'. But do you realize how difficult to understand the whole sentence when you are not in your peak conditions?
In English, the natural sentence should be:
We are NOT going to lose!
The contradictory word is placed on the front, so once you read the NOT, your brain can be prepared to translate the rest of the sentence into negative sentence. _That's not the case with Japanese._
In Japanese, after reading and deciphering the whole sentence up to 80% (believe me, its not an easy task. Their grammars works differently from English), you have to be PREPARED for the last modifier.
Can you imagine that? Just by skipping 1 word can change the meaning of the whole sentence completely, even 180 degree. And we are just talking about 1 sentence.
My example was a short sentence. Now imagine if it is a long one, like in the manga or even newspapers.
After spending alot of time and effort to decipher 80% of the sentence, your brain have to be ready to completely overturn the whole sentence if the last words was a contradictory modifier.
And the modifier is not only limited to contradictory, there are various of them. There is one that indicates that you overdid the said thing, there is one that said that you did it but you don't intend to do it, there is one that said it is what should happen, etc.
In many language, they works in similar way with English.
English

我們不[!]會輸!
Indonesian
Kami tidak[!] akan kalah!
Please notice that the one I gave [!] is the contradictory modifier in those sentences. It's easier to understand this way. And you don't have to be prepared for the modifier at the last of the sentence.
In this case, we see that the official translator is already burnt out, and he knows exactly what would happen if he left out any words for translations. That's why in complicated sentences, he just decided to translate it 'as is', because I assume he is already consumed by fatigue after translating many other mangas (professionals cannot be choosy about what they translate. It's their livelihood, unlike fan translations that most of the time went in line with their own passions and interests).
What I'm trying to convey here, is rather than bashing the '''''incompetent''''' translators (translations: burnt out competent translators), we need to appreciate 'competent translators' that made good translations for us to easily understand.
So the next time you see Patreon from Scanlators asking for donations, don't be choosy and donate to them IF you think they made a good job on translations and you have some spare money.
Note: I am not a Scanlator, and not an official translator too. So this is not a plead to ask for donations for any Scanlators.

TCBScans, probably the most famous fan translating group. They have their own website.
When the official translators need to use poetic language, they use elementary school level sentences but when they need to keep things simple for the audience because an ability is explained for example, they just use the most confusing and nonsensical words. Like, how do these people even exist, though I have to say, I almost peed myself when I read the “no.😎” panel for the first time.

Finally a video topic about this from someone. The official translation is fucking terrible and mangaplus readers pretty much put up with it because they want to do it legally. The fan translations are pretty much a must after reading the official one, which hardly makes sense sometimes and makes the curse system in jjk more confusing than it is really is sometimes.
Why would someone buy the official? Sales falling only reinforces how egregious the translation is and supporting could do the opposite

Genuine question: I'm on TCBs website reading the manga with my gf, but the front page still says translated by Werry. We're on the chapter "Even Pandas Cry" (Chapter 141?). We find the translations pretty difficult to understand, especially the two chapters where Tengen explains the culling games and Kenjaku's plans. I'm caught up to the current chapter, but i find it really difficult to explain whats going on without spoiling. Are these actual TCB translations, or is it Werry? I thought official TCB translations have Todo on the front page, but everybody in the Discord is linking me this website. So what gives.

Reading John Werry's translations is so exhausting. My mind is winded just reading ONE because I have to read it over and over again to pick up the logical flow.
While I agree that the official translation has a ton of issues, I think a video like this doing comparisons needs to go back to the original Japanese to be authoratative. The translation of "負けちゃう？ 勝さ” as "You would lose? Nah, I'd win" is VERY good. Hits the right tone, and maintains the right voice. In this video you really can't make arguments just from the lore to justify translations. You need to get someone who is fluent in Japanese or a Native speaker and also present the original lines as they're written in japanese. You'll make your arguments weaker by only showing EN vs EN comparisons. Just because a line "looks better" or "reads better" doesn't always mean it is more accurate. Many incorrect translations are beloved.
EOPs wouldnt be able to feel self righteous about translation/localization if they had to learn jp 😂 im pretty sure I could feed the script into DeepL and fool them into thinking the DeepL “word for word” edited MTL is more faithful/accurate 😂😂

I wish that the original translator for the manga wasnt such a monster. He wasnt perfect but he did a way better job.
As for Sukunas speech style. I dont speak japanese but i did notice the poetic nature of how he speaks. Its hard to explain. I can feel the poetry when he speaks. The rhymes, it almost feels like hes speaking in a Shakespearian manner. I can't explain it but you can just feel that hes speaking in an ancient and poetic manner and its why i enjoy listening to him so much. Its so much more refined than the other characters.

Glad I wasn’t the only one thinking this. Reading the manga was a bit rough. JJKs power system is as complicated as the rules of modern day Yugioh, but the translations are so bad that I barely understood what was going on half the time. I even wondered if I skipped a page because dialogue lines didn’t flow well into each other. Tbh I was starting to dislike JJK more as I kept reading, thinking it was only good because of the animation quality.
Remember people, it's okay to dislike someones objectively bad work, but never, ever harass them over it.
It seems the most ethical strategy is to purchase the japanese versions and then exclusively read fan translations with a clear conscience, knowing you have sent as much of a consumer message as we can.

The JJK community will laugh at you for not understanding weird shit in JJK yet not realize the official translation is just directly wrong and sometimes literally contradicts the actual story. I have had moments where I actually understood it but the dumbass translations make me just reevaluate my understanding.
