  • The Birth of a Nation starring Nate Parker, Armie Hammer, Penelope Ann Miller, and Gabrielle Union is reviewed by Ben Mankiewicz (Turner Classic Movies), Alonso Duralde (TheWrap and Linoleum Knife podcast), and Christy Lemire (www.ChristyLemire.com).
    Read what other critics had to say: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_...
    Set against the antebellum South, THE BIRTH OF A NATION follows Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner, accepts an offer to use Nat's preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities--against himself and his fellow slaves--Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.

    It took 10 minutes for white people to complain about being vilified in a slavery movie. I applaud your restraint.

      ***** Well, since I haven't seen the film yet, I can't speak to whether or not it has a simple story structure. As far as religion goes, yes many older African-Americans may feel personally attacked by the film using religion to justify slavery. My hope is that the younger black audience, who like most millennials are becoming less religious will understand what the film is trying to say and won't have the emotional religious response that our parents may have.

      Have tyou seen the way Nazis were portrayed in Schindler's List? Or the way the English were portrayed in Braveheart? Suddenly we need this special empathy?

    • @joelhenry5489
      @joelhenry5489 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** The words of one critic in an ocean of film criticism disproves my point? More like the exception proves the rule. And many things go into a RT score outside of the portrayal of the villains. But even so, 78 is a very good score.

    • @ALQAEDAATTACK
      @ALQAEDAATTACK 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yet when it comes to crime it is often referred to as if its an issue with the black community, as oppose to an economic condition.

      ***** So emotional. Weren't you the one who came at me, then told me to leave you alone and now you are coming back again? You didn't make any real points outside of petty name-calling. Show me the part where you said Birth of a Nation had the same RT score as Braveheart. The truth has you so enraged you're hallucinating.

      Charles Baylor One of his co-stars has come out against Parker for his rape during college for which he received no punishment, much as a certain white defendant recently received (less even). The story here is one thing, though I think the movie '13th' sounds better, but the person that made it is a poor star for Hollywood or any institution to laud.

    Has anyone actually read the book 12 Years a Slave was based on? The 12 year old son of Epps (Michael Fassbender's character, who wasn't depicted in this film) whipped slaves mercilessly. They didn't show that in the film adaption. You say Nat Turner wasn't a good guy, Ben, okay. But he's better than a guy who watches "incest porn."

      Unfortunate that you're alright with sinking to the oppressor's level - as far as killing innocents. Thankfully others think differently and work to lead society away from this sort of cycle of violence.

      ***** Well hopefully you enjoy Hunger more because I think it's fantastic (in case you couldn't already tell) and I definitely disagree about the characterization in 12 Years a Slave. The characters have slightly less depth than those in Hunger and Shame, but that didn't bother me as much as it may have bothered you because I think there still was plenty of depth in performance and McQueen's use of the camera to convey emotion never fails to impress me.

    So we saw Birth of a Nation this afternoon. Starts off a little slow. And sort of meanders along like that wagon Nat and Turner drive through the countryside. You know what's coming but nothing prepares you for the end. Packs a wallop. I cried, as I'm sure a lot will, from the power of the conclusion. Unbelievable that human beings can treat each other that way. But they did, and sometimes they still do.
    I wanted to see this film the first weekend out because of the controversy. I'd heard the movie was perfect. Won awards at Sundance. Projected to be a run away winner at the Oscars (no #OscarSoWhite in 2016), then the shoe fell and we read about Nat Parker's college days, and the tragedy that happened to his ex-girlfriend. And the possible end to his film career. As the mother of 2 daughters I was appalled, but I'm also the daughter of an African American man who was subjected to Jim Crow South Carolina and in his honor I felt the need to support Nat Parker's film.
    As Ben Mankiewicz said, it's not hard to separate Nat Parker filmmaker from Nat Parker the man, when he has such a compelling story to tell and he tells it so brilliantly. I'm also with Alonso Duralde, I'm looking forward to Parker's next film. He has a lot to say and I believe we need to hear from diverse voices like his. I truly wish him well on this film because if ever there was a time in history that we need to remember where we came from as a nation it's today when factions in the political arena strive to take us back.

    I disagree with Ben because 12 years a slave was based on true events. The production didn't want to fabricate any scenes just to make it less unsettling to watch. They wanted to create a story genuine to its history as much as possible. Besides, they're moments were the movie gives you an emotional release such as the very last scene.

    When a book can be used to justify diametrically opposing positions (i.e. whether to keep slaves or treat everyone equally), then at the very least it must be admitted that such a book can't be inspired by a perfect creature. In any other context where truth is paramount, no book that contains that much contradictory nonsense would have garnered the level of reverence that the Bible enjoys.

    • @Ex0dus111
      @Ex0dus111 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perfection could never be universal, that's simply impossible. If the Bible is inspired by a perfect creature, it must be because they perfectly served a function at a certain time and context.
      Trying to apply it endlessly and universally is obviously nonsense.

    For those of you who want to REAL story of Nat Turner's slave uprising, you need to read the book "The Fires of Jubilee" by Stephen B. Oates. It tells about the slave rebellion and doesn't leave out the unsavory parts. Like how Nat Turner thought he was chosen by god personally and he wanted to establish a new Jerusalem and so on. And how when he failed he was cut up and his body fat was used to make candles.

    3:20 is where i got offended. and by that i mean. PLEASE DO NOT FORGET that bible is about black slaves from Israel, who have a history of being in slavery, every age( not the dark ages though, we ruled that ) understand that. nat turner read Deuteronomy, read his condition and the bible and realized that. HOWEVER, i agree Nat wasn't reading the book properly, or was he?????

    I feel like they missed the point. the movie was about Nat turner. How would the story of Nat turner have been proven so long after he was dead and villanized for so long?

    I really feel like there are a sizable amount of critics who shouldn't be reviewing this movie. I read 23 reviews for this movie on rotten Tomatoes. Most of the rotten scores I read read as an indictment of Nate Parker. If you can't separate the artist from the art then please refrain from sharing your opinion to a large audience who respects you. They deserve better than your b game. I feel like there are critics who are so focused on Nate Parker that they have failed at reviewing this movie. This PC world is killing our intelligence.

    These fools that talk this stuff about slave movies must realize that slavery was not that long ago. Desegregation was less than forty years ago. And slavery ended in 1864! It terns of a historical perspective it was not that long ago. This movie from the filming to the relationships of the people on the plantation all were effected by the evil of slavery. Racism and hatred does not only affect the one that is being oppressed but the oppressor is damaged, physiologically, spiritually,and physically by the evil of slavery.This movie was a real human experience to have a relationship with your Master and to have a liking to him, yet having a hatred towards him for continuing and perpetuating a evil system of slavery. The filming of the camera created infinitesimal living environment that made you think you were really breathing the air in the world.I and many others enjoyed this movie will see it again and will discuss it with others on improving relationships and have authentic conversations to grow and learn so that this institution of evil will never be repeated again. This movie was breathtaking!

    All he knew of the world was through the eyes of a slave or the images of the bible. As humans our dreams and fantasies are based on our world view . We typically develop perspective through living a full life and what we learn through education. All things that developed the human mind was suppressed in the slave. It was illegal for slaves to venture pass the masters property line. Imagine what narrow view of life that would leave the mind with. That is the significance of the scene when his master threatened his life for suggesting he knew the value of 250 dollars. If you were held in mental darkness and the only light you were given was bible images, what might your fantasy of your freedom and true worth Intel? If you read princess and fairy tell books to your child daughter, your child may fantasize about becoming a princess, is that crazy?

    How the fuck can Christy give a superhero movie like Captain America Civil War an 8.3, but a historically accurate movie like BoaN a 5.8? I've lost respect for WTF. There are much worse movies that get higher ratings. I gotta say I'm surprised by the nit picky reviews. "Birth of a Nation" was a terrific film that dealt with historically accurate subject matter. I guess I'm ridiculous for liking movies based on a true story and not flying robots or superhero movies. Also, yeah Nate Parker may be a bad dude, but did we hold that against "The Pianist" by Roman Polanski? Come tf on people!!!

    2:48 Christy, when you say Nat Turner was portrayed as a "good guy" you show an oversimplification that could be interpreted as "the director wanted to make me feel bad about being White". Nat Turner was simply portrayed as a guy in a messed up situation with no good options, which is correct. Where is your nuance, empathy, understanding and an ability to put context (slavery for crying out loud) into your opinion? To point out that the rapes were not historically accurate is trivial DURING SLAVERY where if those rapes didn't happen, you know others did. My biggest beef with this review is that you appear to not understand that Nat Turner and his "rebellion" was in a WAR for their freedom, a righteous cause. In that context, yes Christy, he was a good guy as was everyone in his rebellion. Please be a little more nuanced.

    Amusing that they ask "Why has the love for this film cooled off since Sundance?" Isn't the answer obvious? The audiences who watched this film at Sundance were unaware of Parker's past crime and thus able to judge this film on its own merits. Anyone who watches it now has difficulty praising a film made by a rapist. Will the WTF reviewers take time away from a review to mention Polanski's past crime, the next time he has a newly released film?

    • @talkbackworld2952
      @talkbackworld2952 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      He was acquitted. Thus he is not a rapist. Even if you would like to think so. That's the point of going to court and having a trial. You should say, you believe he is a rapist even though you were not there and have no idea what really happened. Polanski did it, admitted it and he ran away to AVOID trial. So stop comparing them.

      SoulStylistJukeBox No I didn't. You equated him with Polanski and said will they treat him the same as Nate by asking that question. My point is Nate went to court and was found innocent and Polanski never went to court.

    • @SoulStylistJukeBox
      @SoulStylistJukeBox 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      TALKBACKWORLD Is English your first language? It it were you'd understand that the point of my post was to present a theory WHY the film isn't getting the reviews it deserves. Objective opinions of this film are forever tainted by the fact that almost everyone who reviews it feels the need to mention Parker's past. Because of it, anyone who watches the film feels shitty about praising it. My point was, I never read modern professional film reviews of Allen and Polanski's work that mention their past controversies SO WHY is this happening for Birth of A Nation? All of this was mentioned in my original post but for some odd reason you chose to misunderstand it.

    • @SoulStylistJukeBox
