I have an incredibly hard time wondering how many things would work with only one screen, unless they do what they did with the first Yo-kai Watch game in Japan and put the maps in the corner (but the M&L battle system would still need to heavily reworked since enemies telegraph their moves, and a good number of your special attacks, use the top screen).

A few weeks ago I popped Ocarina of Time into my 3DS after not using either for a long time, and although the cartridge showed up on the menu, I had to reinsert it before it would start up. It gave me a scare.
I tested all my 3DS games recently after seeing a Twitter thread about how Nintendo moved from MaskROM to FlashROM in cartridges starting with the DS, reducing their lifespan from 30-50 years to just 5-15. All were fine, except Pokémon Moon and Omega Ruby, which just wouldn't be recognized by my New 3DS XL on 11.5.0-38E. I had bought them at launch alongside their counterparts; Alpha Sapphire still works fine, Sun gives me a bit more trouble but is recognized after just popping it out and back in a few times. After watching this, I decided to do some more testing on my plain old 3DS on 11.0.0-22E. Still no luck with Omega Ruby, but Moon worked, and now works on my New 3DS again!

I literally just had this issue happen with Omega Ruby and was so confused. The cart icon didn’t show up. I’m also worried about Persona Q since I’m a MegaTen colector. I’m probably gonna start backing up all my 3ds games to be safe. I’ve been taking care of the games well keeping them in the case when not I’m using them
Those little components are SMD components. 3 Capacitors and 1 Resistor. Possibly a 0-ohm resistor. IC's do die. Solder joints do break over time to a number of things like heat to cold stress, crap solder and even bad pads on the PCB. Even some crap PCB boards can crack and separate over time and lead to broken rails and again solder cracks. Other components like mosfet logic gates seize up and some dry out or burst. Nothing is full proof. Time destroys everything. But there is a difference between cheap components to quality ones. Reflow is always a good move to try. If it's not working, no harm in trying.
Just checking my copy real quick, it seems to be working still. Haven’t tested it extensively to see if it crashes or anything, but seems ok for now at least. I take damn good care of my games so if they die, somethings wrong lol
It's not random. It's that the 3DS firmware and the timed EON ticket event for ORAS that is causing this. The EON ticket timer is up. If someone didn't claim the EON ticket then the system can't read the game because they never got the update patch for the end of EON distribution. Can't speak to Persona Q though.
If so, it has nothing to do with the cartridge no? It should work on other device with earlier firmware. I'm so lost with his explanation, is it because of bar hardware batch or it has something to do with 3ds firmware breaking physical cartridge which if it's true, I'm so confused how
@@Tea-Spin Yes serebii and that is already mentioned in this video. They used the exact same cart on two different systems on read the cart one did not. Why that is the case I can't explain Nintendo released patch notes back in 2020 about the EON ticket event in ORAS being effected. It seems this issue started to appear about then. I have no idea why Persona Q would be effected though. I own both versions of ORAS. Both of mine work. I also happen to own Persona Q it also works. *shrugs* Based on the serebii test it's easy to isolate it to firmware and not hardware. Not to say this might be cause by both issues. Holy shit, this happened with my copy of Dragon Quest 4 on the DS! I was playing it just fine, and the next day I put it in, and it just didn't work at all...
@Dad_ShoesI took it to a store and I'm pretty sure they tried the same thing but no dice. I'll try it myself though because I was actually almost about to beat it when it happened lol
This happens with some game cartridges when you don't use them for a long time, it is a problem with the metal contacts you must clean them with a dry q-tip and make sure they look shiny again.
I can relate to that issue. Felt like playing Alpha Sapphire today after it staying on the shelf for about 2 years. Last time i've played it, everything worked just fine. Now my 3DS just doesn't want to read the cardridge at all for seemingly no reason. My other 3DS games work just fine. Man, this just sucks.
This happened to me with my copy of Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright that I bought at Best Buy years ago - an expensive game nowadays at that so that hurt. I popped it in a few months ago and nothing. Tried cleaning it even though I didn’t think it was necessary because it’s been in its case ever since I played and beat it years ago. The cleaning didn’t work. I couldn’t understand why it wouldn’t work. Tried inserting it in my other 3DS and nothing. So this makes sense. Just sucks that it happened to be this game because the cart alone is running for around $100ish if I wanted to replace it.
There was issues with the original too especially involving the time mechanics which sometimes just stopped working all together so it's interesting that something is happening to the 3ds version. Curious if it's the 3ds itself if it's affecting more than a few games (i know nintendogs easily gets bumped out of the slot as well as animal crossing on the 3ds XL causing them to stop working)
As someone who "collects" digitally only these days, it's ironic (and I presume, more than a little scary) to see so many physical games "disappearing" lately.
Yeah I switched to digital a while back. I got sick of having so many cartridges everywhere, so I sold almost all of my games online and each time one sold I purchased the digital version and transferred the save data to the digital copy so I didn’t have to lose anything. I sold all the carts alone though so I still can display the cases if I want though. I love physical media but I just decided this would be way more convenient and probably last way longer. Plus I don’t sell games when I finish them so I don’t care about that lol.
It sucks physical copies can stop working. I could never switch to collecting digitally, though. Knowing my whole collection can be taken from me in the blink of an eye makes it so not worth it.
This happened to my copy a couple years ago. I was super disappointed because it was the only time I ever got into breeding and battling on a competitive level and lost all the pokemon I actually put time into. Interesting to see that it's not just me...
It's any and every game. I've had several and if the pins don't line up perfectly there will be an issue. Some I have to pop out and back in repeatedly until it works. Also just checked and mu Omega Ruby works fine.
I've been playing Omega Ruby recently on my 3ds (PAL btw). The cart works fine, but I think my 3ds is a bit iffy when the cart is in. It says my *sd card* isn't reading. It usually happens when my 3ds has been in it's travel case. It happened with my other 3ds carts though, so I think it's just my 3ds being on it's last legs. Hope anyone else with these faulty carts are gonna be ok!
While you're at it, check those system batteries! I've had 'em bloat in a PSP and a 3DS. If they get too big, they can bend the plastic in your systems and even leak, covering the circuitry in corrosive goop.
Always remove the internal battery from your system if you're going to store it for a while. The PSP, DS, and 3DS all have internal clocks which use the battery to keep track of time, which means the batteries CAN die on their own.
My Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire that have each only been played once or twice both booted up in my daughter's 3DS, but I haven't checked on my XL or my husband's New XL to see if there's any issues with handhelds that have been updated more recently.
I have a luigis mansion Dark moon game card and I put it in my 3ds xl and it won't boot but when I put it in my new Nintendo 3ds xl it boots to the 3ds screen then it restarts the entire system. I will say it was having issues before with new super Mario bros 2. I opened up the card and found so much rust inside of the game I didn't think rust would get inside the card and cause a 3ds to restart. its so odd because its never been in dirt or outside ever.

There is another issue with the wii u games that you should talk about. It's happened to me with hyrule warriors. After playing it for about 25 hours, every time I try to play the disc the game shows the splash screen, and then the console shuts off, but the light stays on and you have to hold down the power button for 3 seconds to fully shut it off. The gamepad also shows a lot of static. I still have never found a solution online but I know that other people have experienced it and I think you should mention it.
I didn’t think much of it, but a couple months ago I tried continuing my copy of AS and it wasn’t reading when in the 3ds. After taking it out and putting it in about 5 times, it would read. I’d start playing, and about 5-10 minutes in the game would crash and the 3ds couldn’t read it. I had to save after everything just to make progress in the game. This really sucks cause I never finished ORAS
I remember in probably 2015 or 2016 that there was a thing were you could convert your cartridge to digital and it makes the cartridge not work. Do you guys remember that I don’t know if I remember correctly or I’m crazy
Do you mean the save game or the actual cartridge? Because there is an app that lets you transfer saves from a cart to a digital version, but the cart’s save is wiped after.

The 2DS XL its the best built version of the 3DS internally, because a lot of things that would normally go through the ribbon cable like the cameras or the speakers were moved down to make the production and assembly more efficient. Also, they fixed a problem that existed through the entire 3DS lifespan until the 2DS XL, is that the frame on the touchscreen would scratch the top screen, so they got rid of it.

5. Play region locked games

Popped in my copy of Persona Q and it read fine. Odd that it’s happening to so many.

Please update man
Just checking my copy real quick, it seems to be working still.
Is there a reference for this issue?
But that is statistically very unlikely however not impossible.

That’s the reason I hacked my 3ds. I just dumpt all my games on my flashdriver

While you're at it, check those system batteries! I've had 'em bloat in a PSP and a 3DS. If they get too big, they can bend the plastic in your systems and even leak, covering the circuitry in corrosive goop.
Nice, something to look forward.
At least they are not exploding like those Samsung Note phones from years ago.
Always remove the internal battery from your system if you're going to store it for a while. The PSP, DS, and 3DS all have internal clocks which use the battery to keep track of time, which means the batteries CAN die on their own.
