I lost a rabbit I adopted once to GI Stasis, we got him into the vet as soon as I noticed something was wrong. Sadly, he had to be put down, he was a really young rabbit too, so it was hard. Rest in peace, Mr. James Bun.
+kannaredpanda I am so sorry for your loss! Sadly rabbits are such fragile creatures and sometimes there isn't anything left we can do to help them. I am sure you did everything you could for him!
+101rabbits hi Haiyley after you uploaded this video by a couple of minutes i have watched it straight away. and i started panicking so i started feeding my rabbit herbs, wet leafy veggies and hay. and a bowl of water ofcoarse. so then i contacted my vet and i told her " my rabbit eats normally and everything but she doesnt have enough fibre because she doesnt eat much hay and because of that i cut down her pellets to 1Tbsp. a day with unlimited hay and she started eating MUCH MORE HAY and also she is a long haired rabbit so i spend the whole time with her taking the loose hairs off of her because she may get blockage from all the hairs ( since she is molting heavily ) and also i massage her tummy which she will never let me do and she seems like her tummy is bulky. she does sit in a hunched position but not pressing her tummy to the floor" she told me that your rabbit may have GI statis but she told that the *WET leafy veggies will upset your rabbits tummy" and i was crying on the phone with my vet cuz the thought of her passing was unbelievable!!😩😩 and to clear out. i booked for a checkup with an X-ray incase she has blockages. and Hailey what if my rabbit crashes from the med's??😭😭😭💔💔💔 pls reply
My rabbit also died of G I Stasis we didn't know she had she was eating fine she looked happy I didn't even know what G I Stasis was she suddenly started twitching then her temperature dropped and she died in my arms it also could of been old age because she was 10 but she had a squishy tummy and was getting skinner
Me to I'm n a bad streak every school holiday I've lost a bunny for the past 2 school holidays first bunny to old age than our new bunny got floopy bunny syndrome and my new bunny might have Gi stasis
My rabbit had this due to a vet I use to visit had cut his teeth with clippers! And done it to far down..His teeth split and he stopped eating, drinking and then stopped pooping and peeing, we took him in to another vet who specialises in small animals and thankfully he recovered well:)
My rabbit had gi stasis and I just have massages and lettuce and she grinded her teeth and it was occasional. Also of 101rabbits sees this I have a question. I was feeding my bunny a little too much pellets and the day after I gave a raspberry her stomachs got a little bigger then usual. Then I gave a massage, hay, water, lettuce and as I'm typing this she is right now laying down and she was running around a bit and eating hay and lettuce a bit. And I do not have enough to get her to a bet plus we are moving right now which is most likely the cause also of it. But what should I do for now? The July if you see this :)
I have had rabbits for a while and none of them have ever had GI stasis that I know of. Thank goodness but this video was very helpful. Thank you and keep up the awesome videos.
It depends on their diet and how much exercise they get each day. If your rabbit eats lot of fiberous hay and water and veggies every day and you brush them often and regularly, its not as common. My rabbit is a year and a half and shes had stasis twice.
i have two rabbits and one who i adopted has stasis currently. he is about three. the whole time i have owned him he has gotten a spayed girlfriend, constant hay, constant water, veggies twice a day, and some treats. he also free roams my rabbit proofed room. all you can do is care for your rabbit the best you can and hope for the best.
This video was really detailed and informative, thank you! Also, I would greatly apppreciate it if you could make a video about emergency kits. Thank you so much!
You should do a video on your emergency kit and what to expect during GI Stasis and what to expect after, like how the stool changes size etc and how pineapple and Pedialyte can also help, I love your videos ❤️
Just yesterday my rabbit suddenly would not respond or move/drink/eat. My parents do not allow me to go to the vet due to the cost so all I could do was keep her warm and try to get her to eat and drink. She is doing so much better now and im not sure what caused her sudden illness but she seems fine now. Many times I think i could have saved my past rabbits if i couldve gone to the vet, and i am so glad my rabbit did not die. Thank you so much for all this information. I really wish my parents let me take my rabbits to the vet. I swear I would pay for it but they say that it wont do anything.
I heard this story before. I don't understand how your parents can say going to the doctor won't do anything. So sorry. Recently someone else was worried about a rabbit and had no money and she couldn't get to the vet, but a relative was able to help her. Maybe you should show your parents this video.
This is currently happening to my rabbit. I am so relived I found this and so I can keep an eye on my bunny more. (I already went to vet immedeatly) And I am giving her pain medicine. I have been using these tips in your video too and it's been helping. She's eating more but her poop is still small, but that's not as bad. Tysm!!!
Wow, what wonderful life saving information and so beautifully presented. All rabbit carers should watch this video, it should be shown in schools because I do not think people know how to care for rabbits properly. I dread to think what pain these sweet quiet creatures go through. I agree with every single word spoken in this video.
I have heard of GI Stasis before but didn't really look into it and now im so glad I watched this video. It was so informative and very good to know. How do you check your rabbits temp? What thermometer do you use and if the temp is exactly 100 F is that a emergency? And I would love if you could do a emergency kit video.
I currently do not have a thermometer for my rabbits and haven't ever checked mine. I have heard that you can purchase just a normal plastic thermometer and some gel and use it as a rectal thermometer. You can have your vet show you how. Since I don't have one, I just kinda judged it on how my rabbits ears felt. Rabbits send their body heat to their ears when their hot so if their ears are really hot, they could be over heating, when Ebony had stasis, her ears were cold so I just placed her on a warm heating pad. Nothing hot enough to make her over heat though
Excellent, thorough video! Thank you for making the time and effort to share with us. You are a very mature and knowledgeable young lady. Your explanation and thoroughness were far better than videos on the same subject done by people twice or more your age! Your rabbits are very fortunate to have you!
We had a scare a few months ago from our rabbit Horizon, he has a tendency to eat things that he's not supposed to. I gave him a bunch of tummy massages and eventually he got better from me doing that. Started popping and eating again the same day. Extremely important that you make sure that they're eating and pooping. Great informative video :)
can you take pictures of some of the positions? like the pressed belly or the hunched over belly? that would really help. I dont know if my rabbit has gi stasis. he has diarrhea but he doesnt act weird. hes always hungry and always running around. he doesnt teeth grind either.
You kind of make it sound like it's common for your rabbit to get this. How often does this happen exactly? And surely there has to be ways to prevent it from happening.
It's common because of how their guts work. They require a constant flow of fibre through the gut and without that, their digestive system can grind to a halt. They're like mini horses, they have similar digestive systems, and this issue is equally common in horses, only it's called colic.
I currently have a rabbit who is prone to gut motility slowdowns (stasis), even with a diet that is near 100% hay. Four things have absolutely saved her life on multiple occasions--sub-Q fluids, Compounded Cisapride, lactulose, and Critical Care, in that order of importance. If you have a rabbit, I think it is absolutely critical to know how to administer sub-Q fluids at home and to have the materials on-hand, because a rabbit that stops drinking water is in serious danger and syringe feeding will NOT supply enough liquids (therefore it is essential to always monitor water intake.) A good rabbit-savvy vet will have the IV bag, tubing, and needles, and be able to show you how to place the needle correctly on your own (it's a bit stressful to do the first few times, but not hard). I cannot stress enough how rapidly rabbits can dehydrate and when they do dehydrate how rapidly their overall health begins to fail. And any good rabbit-savvy vet in 2020 will either compound Cisapride or will be able to get it from a compounding pharmacy. It is superior to metoclopramide on its own (works better, fewer side effects, safer for long-term use), and can be combined with metoclopramide in more severe cases. IMO, especially if you are not near a rabbit ER and your vet is not open 24-7, having sub-Q fluids (and the know how to administer them), Cisapride, and lactulose on hand along with the ability to identify a gut motility slowdown early on can make the difference between a minor/moderate issue and a life-threatening one.
my Rabbit is two years old. he just doesn't eat hay/grass no matter how much I yet. he eats sprouts cabbage and white rice along with very little water.. is that sufficient for him..
Some rescue agencies encourage people not to keep their rabbits outdoor because you can see them regularly throughout the day and so you might not catch an illness early. Plus there are predators and extreme temps to worry about.
I hope I am able to prevent my rabbits from GI Stasis. I do t don't want any of them getting sick, they mean too much to me. YES ON THE MEDICAL KIT VIDEO, ALSO DO A VIDEO FOR A CHRISTMAS TOUR!!!!!
One of my first rabbits died quite suddenly and we were wondering what it was. He died like 2 years ago and we still hadn't find anything. We got medicine from my vet because we took hom and my other rabbit for a free vet check. She didn't tell us what it was. Sadly he died a few days later. Thank you for clearing up the mystery of blackberrys death
I wish I would've known this a week ago... I recently spayed my bunny Raichu and sadly she went into GI Stasis due to stress. I went through vets, medications, and critical care. Her stomach was filled with gas and they offered to remove some of the gas with a small needle. She died shortly after I took her home...
I'm curious about the wet leaves thing. I know that when they are in GI Stasis this helps them stay hydrated, but I also know that it's not okay to feed your rabbit wet leaves. I'm a bit confused.
My biggest tip for anyone that thinks their rabbit has stopped eating and may have GI stasis is- Hydrate your rabbit immediately. Because If your rabbit stopped eating for any reason it probably hasn't been drinking either and its digestive system can't work if it gets dehydrated. So electolytes in small amounts can help kick start its digestion and also keep it from dehydrating. So have infant electrolyte solution as your medical kit and some really good syringes. Give your rabbit one tablespoon of the electrolyte solution (15ml) then wait and watch. You can do this before you even take them to the vet because usually its going to be a couple of hours until you can get to the vet and you don't want your rabbit to get dehydrated while waiting. Buy some good syringes. also: semethicone is good too but I only give semethicone if I can here stomach gurgling.
Soo Important! Very common. I know that in NC rabbits are considered "Exotic Pets " so I have to bring my rabbits to an Exotic Rabbit Vet and they are quite expensive. But if I'd of adopted in the beginning ( I did adopt, my last bunny) it would have been cheaper because they're already Spayed or neutered. Adopt Don't Shop! Especially right after Easter when so many rabbits need homes
Hi I'm a first time bunny mum and my bunny didn't eat all her food today now I'm really worried I felt a little lump on one side under her rib but she's acting pretty normal and she's been pooping like normal do you think I should be worried
My first rabbit died suddenly in the winter and It didn't die because it wasn't warm enough cause he was spread out when we found him and now I think I know why he died😪R.I.P Emmit I will always remember the two months I had you 😘😞
My bunny lays around a lot and basically moves from laying down to his litter box ,hay rack, food bowl, water, etc. Is he okay? Or is he just lazy? He's a 4 year old lionhead male bunny. I give him free roam to two giant x pens attached to each other and he has one medium cage with his litter box and everything and then a "play area". He never leaves the medium cage as far as I see. He eats poops and drinks fine.
What are the cage dimensions? Your rabbits cage should be at least 2ftx4ft. A larger cage may make him move around more. Also try having his free time during his active times (dawn and dusk)
Whether she is certified or not she is performing a great service. But what you have to do is take that information, do research, and then confirm everything with an exotic vet.
I went on vacation for a week and had people take care of her. When I got back there was small poop pellets everywhere not in the litter box. It didn't look like she had been eating her pellets and barely any hay. I feel like it's my fault and the person who looked after her didn't tell me she wasn't eating. She is eating hay but no pellets. Also she is reasonable lighter and acting unlike herself. I don't know if it is Gi stasis and idk how to make her eat the pellets. Please help thanks.
My bunny will not let me hold him this way and freaks out if I even try to touch his tummy. What can I do? I believe he has GI stasis but I don’t know how to help him since he won’t let me near his tummy. :/
I think my bunny has this because he has most of the symptoms. Took him to the vet after a day. Did everything the vet said but forcefully because he just didn't want anything in his mouth. It has been 2 days and he's not really moving or eating nor drinking. Really worried now.
My bunny poops a lot and he started having like wet poopies for the past few days so I decided to stop giving him veggies for awhile and eat pellets and hay and I'm really scared that he got big stomach well he is kinda obese but he poops normally now and sometimes he really scares me a lot because he would just flop for no reason.
My rabbit was ill since 3 days he had a very swollen eye 👁 aand was recommended a operation in 4-5 days but from 4 the day he stopped eating that’s GI stasis .. I fed him paste of green vegetables and some fruits this extended his life but suddenly stopped eating the paste also and died today... if you’re rabbit is also suffering from the same don’t ignore do the surgery as soon as possible don’t wait like me .. miss him like hell ..
For anyone else whose bunny struggles with gut motility, Bene-Bac Plus by Pet Ag significantly decreased the number of bouts for mine! I give him a dose each day in his veggies.
Can you please go over how to check a bunny's temperature and how to give a tummy massage? Also, it would be awesome if you did a video on what to have in an emergency kit.
my bunny was drinking a lot of water and peeing a lot...she had teary eyes...she died two days ago...last day she had bloody urine...what would b d exact cause of her death???
see this with rabbits all the time. worst thing I've seen was a woman who starved her rabbit for desexing and the vets at my work decided to go ahead with surgery. the bunny flipped out the next day and just died
Before you get a rabbit there should be a course teaching you bunny illness and what to do there has been many times my rabbit got sick and there was no good vet or its on a public holiday
My rabbit is not eating anything and we can't give him medicine because he turns his head around and the vets in india are really non caring. Someone tell me what to do!!?
you said GI stasis might happen by dehydration, I bought my rabbit 6 months ago but they never drank water(even though I keep water in her cage) what should I do?
i know i'm really late, but maybe your rabbit doesn't like a water bowl? mine prefer a medium sized bottle that drips (? there's a decent name for that but i forgot what it is) instead of a water bowl. he also doesn't like bigger ones.
Omg did my rabbit get it before? Quite a long time ago, I saw him "loafing" and when I touch him, he seemed to be lethargic then I noticed he didn't poo at all and then I gave him water and he started to drink a lot. I decided to wait for another day and he was fine. This was quite a while ago, do you think I should call a vet? (He's perfectly fine now, excretion and diet all normal)
I took my poor bunny to the vet yesterday because he hasnt been eating or going to the bathroom. She said just to put the critical care in a bowl. Do you think thats okay as well?
Is there more things to make sure my rabbit doesn't get it because I'm getting a bunny soon and I want to try my best to make sure she doesn't get it please tell me Also is it ok to buy a rabbit from (pet supply plus)
pretty sure my baby bunny has this, i have two should i separate them (if i do the ill one will be in a small cage) and i can’t get to the vets as it’s easter☹️
Yes separate the bunnies as baby bunnies should be separated anyways until they are both fixed. Get ready to take your rabbit into the vet ASAP tomorrow morning. Just drive to the vet and get there when they option. Until then be sure to keep your bunny warm and do gentle tummy rubs. If your rabbit gets any worse before tomorrow morning you’ll need to go to an ER vet or your rabbit may end up passing away before morning.
my bunny just ate a piece of my carpet I have a carpet that is like little bits of yarn put together I was just wondering since I'm a new rabbit owner if she was going yo be ok or if I need to take her to the vet she is 3 1/2 months old will she pass it or no she is a holland lop???
I pulled one piece out of her mouth but idk if she ate more than one piece is this normal behavior she would dig at it and then pull at it I only saw her get 1 piece and I pulled it out of her mouth
Luna the bunny she probably won't, my stupid sister left gummy worms on the floor and my Holland lop are a little bit of it, she was then about 2 1/2 months old, now it's a few days until she's 3 months old
I have a question on choosing a right vet for our new bunny, I was told that it is good to take them to a pet shelter that handles rabbits. Is that true
+Shadow Bubbles Rabbits teeth never stop growing their whole life. So because of that, teeth problems are VERY common in rabbits. Especially in lop eared or elderly rabbits

My rabbit passed away very suddenly about a week ago and I couldn't figure out how or why she died. Now I know why..
Just a question how regular do rabbits get this as you made it sound really common and how much would it cost to get treated at the vet
It depends on their diet and how much exercise they get each day. If your rabbit eats lot of fiberous hay and water and veggies every day and you brush them often and regularly, its not as common. My rabbit is a year and a half and shes had stasis twice.

It's actually the most common problem in rabbits
It’s very common unfortunately. It depends on diet, treats, exercise, grooming, etc. Treats like yogurt drops can cause GI stasis.
After a spay or neuter, rabbits can go into stasis.
This video was really detailed and informative, thank you! Also, I would greatly apppreciate it if you could make a video about emergency kits. Thank you so much!

There are ways to prevent this from what I've seen and it should NOT be common or normal.

Thank you for clearing up the mystery of blackberrys death
I lost my rabbit Cosmo to GI stasis because he had an infection... but I didn’t know what the symptoms were....
Why am I watching this when I don't have a rabbit? Oh well, now I know if I ever get one. I may never get one though...
More videos like this please! :)
When you give your rabbit Simethicone do you give it by mouth or put it in it's pellets or veggies?
I wish I would've known this a week ago... I recently spayed my bunny Raichu and sadly she went into GI Stasis due to stress. I went through vets, medications, and critical care. Her stomach was filled with gas and they offered to remove some of the gas with a small needle. She died shortly after I took her home...
RiceBall96 Aw :( It's hard to say bye to a great bunny
Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry! 😢
I'm curious about the wet leaves thing. I know that when they are in GI Stasis this helps them stay hydrated, but I also know that it's not okay to feed your rabbit wet leaves. I'm a bit confused.
I have a question. Why does my rabbit ALWAYS nibble on her chin and neck and may this wierd face
They sometimes have fleas or mites so u may want to check that
+Matt Freire she makes this really awkward face she does it
My vet gave me critical care but I've tried giving it to my bunny but he won't take it plz help
This happened to my rabbit and he passed away 😭
I would like to know what to put in it emergency kit
Soo Important! Very common. I know that in NC rabbits are considered "Exotic Pets " so I have to bring my rabbits to an Exotic Rabbit Vet and they are quite expensive. But if I'd of adopted in the beginning ( I did adopt, my last bunny) it would have been cheaper because they're already Spayed or neutered. Adopt Don't Shop! Especially right after Easter when so many rabbits need homes
Yes I would love to see more emergency kit and rabbit sickness please
Thanks for helping me
You made me know more about the disease 🙏
Hi I'm a first time bunny mum and my bunny didn't eat all her food today now I'm really worried I felt a little lump on one side under her rib but she's acting pretty normal and she's been pooping like normal do you think I should be worried
Jade Heath no she should be fine but i suggest to take her to the vet
Also try having his free time during his active times (dawn and dusk)
hi i love your videos, but i just got four bunnies and found out that you are not aloud to use a thermometer
my first bunny had GI Stasis,it was overnight so she was died in the morning
Are you certified to discuss this information?
Take your rabbit to the vet.
This was super helpful, thanks!
My bunny will not let me hold him this way and freaks out if I even try to touch his tummy. What can I do? I believe he has GI stasis but I don’t know how to help him since he won’t let me near his tummy. :/
If your bunny has GI stasis it needs to see a vet ASAP. Tummy rubs won’t cure it. Only helps ease discomfort
I think my bunny has this because he has most of the symptoms. Took him to the vet after a day. Did everything the vet said but forcefully because he just didn't want anything in his mouth. It has been 2 days and he's not really moving or eating nor drinking. Really worried now.
how is he now ?
My bunny poops a lot and he started having like wet poopies for the past few days so I decided to stop giving him veggies for awhile and eat pellets and hay and I'm really scared that he got big stomach well he is kinda obese but he poops normally now and sometimes he really scares me a lot because he would just flop for no reason.
They flop when they're relaxed.
Leah Hoffman Oh lol I get paranoid easily.
my bunny just died :( he was only 2 months
My bunny isn't eating and she's 1 year old and I'm really worried about her we just got her nd she's adopted, what shall I do?
This video was awesome and amazing I learned so much😲
Can you please go over how to check a bunny's temperature and how to give a tummy massage? Also, it would be awesome if you did a video on what to have in an emergency kit.
Please do a rabbit emergency kit I've got one for my guinea pigs but I know theirs some extra stuff I will need in their for my rabbit.
Thank you this video helped me ❤️
Hi my rabbit is in the vet right now they wanted him to stay for 2 days :( is he going to be okay?
My rabbit just passed away from what i beleave was Gi stasis.
My rabbit keeps shaking and has hot eas What Can i do?
I hope you called an exotic \ vet. You can't rely on TH-camrs, because they may not get your message right away or may not see it.
my bunny was drinking a lot of water and peeing a lot...she had teary eyes...she died two days ago...last day she had bloody urine...what would b d exact cause of her death???
You should ask an exotic vet.
Very helpful info if you can get past how many times she says “um”
No one is perfect.
see this with rabbits all the time. worst thing I've seen was a woman who starved her rabbit for desexing and the vets at my work decided to go ahead with surgery. the bunny flipped out the next day and just died
thank you so much for the info
Before you get a rabbit there should be a course teaching you bunny illness and what to do there has been many times my rabbit got sick and there was no good vet or its on a public holiday
My rabbit is not eating anything and we can't give him medicine because he turns his head around and the vets in india are really non caring. Someone tell me what to do!!?
sparkling star hold his head really still and put the tip of the syringe at the side of the rabbits mouth and then slowly inject the medicine.
Bilbo Baggins I know but he does not stay still. But will have to see thanks for the advice though .
you said GI stasis might happen by dehydration, I bought my rabbit 6 months ago but they never drank water(even though I keep water in her cage) what should I do?
another question can I just feed my rabbits pineapple instead of the juice?
i know i'm really late, but maybe your rabbit doesn't like a water bowl? mine prefer a medium sized bottle that drips (? there's a decent name for that but i forgot what it is) instead of a water bowl. he also doesn't like bigger ones.
@@adibaarefin1454 I hope you called an exotic vet. Hope it worked out.
You scared me i thought one of your bunnies had GI stacis
I took my poor bunny to the vet yesterday because he hasnt been eating or going to the bathroom. She said just to put the critical care in a bowl. Do you think thats okay as well?
Holy crap no it's 11:54 my bunny definably has this but no vet is open
Is there more things to make sure my rabbit doesn't get it because I'm getting a bunny soon and I want to try my best to make sure she doesn't get it please tell me
Also is it ok to buy a rabbit from (pet supply plus)
Just do the research and make sure you’re ready for a 10+ year commitment
Is this common in netherland dwarf rabbits?
I think it all depends on the care provided. My guess is any type of rabbit is equally susceptible.
pretty sure my baby bunny has this, i have two should i separate them (if i do the ill one will be in a small cage) and i can’t get to the vets as it’s easter☹️
Luna the bunny she probably won't, my stupid sister left gummy worms on the floor and my Holland lop are a little bit of it, she was then about 2 1/2 months old, now it's a few days until she's 3 months old
What happened to Sterling? :(
Thanks for the video... love from India 🇮🇳
I have a question on choosing a right vet for our new bunny, I was told that it is good to take them to a pet shelter that handles rabbits. Is that true
please make a care kit tutorial video! it would be very helpful ;)
Dental problems? how would a rabbit develop dental problems?
+Shadow Bubbles Rabbits teeth never stop growing their whole life. So because of that, teeth problems are VERY common in rabbits. Especially in lop eared or elderly rabbits
101rabbits Oh. Thank you so much!
@@Trainingthroughlife Why lop rabbits?
My bunny was healthy, I had him for over 11 years and he just died in my arms tonight.. 😭😭😭
I'm so sorry
I think my rabbit might be going into stasis mildly but I hope not.
Animalsforever31 give ur bunny a massage, it'll help a lot
I hope you called an exotic vet.
How many times in a bunny’s lifetime do they get this like does this happen a lot or
