    Turn focus assist on and when you turn the manual focus ring it will automatically magnify the focus point. No need to press the command dial. Ofcourse you must be in manual focus mode.

I use it in a very basic way, all manual so I like to play around with the settings but haven't gotten too much in depth into film simulation for example, I tried it a couple of times but haven't played around enough with it (or know much about film to begin with) to make something useful out of them.

    I'm actually pretty disappointed with the AF on the X100s. I thought there maybe a problem with mine but I can see that your copy hunts as well and sometimes will over focus then pull back. I bought my GF a secondhand X20 I'm more impressed with that than the X100s. Seriously thinking of selling mine and buying the X30. The Fuji's are only for hobby shoots so only ever go as far as social media so I don't think the smaller sensor would make much difference. And yep the AFC is a joke, notice how it's skipped over real quick with the likes of Hobby and Arias.

    I believe it works great in combination with OVF, because it will automatically change to EVF focus peak or split screen, when you turn the focus ring. After confirming focus you revert back to the OVF. I like using OVF because you see outside the frame.

    What about focusing in the OVF? That is the biggest differentiator of X100s.

    • @dqstudios
      @dqstudios  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      When in OVF, you can choose and see which focusing point it chosen, but you don't get any visual cue to confirm what is in focus until the EVF switches on IF you have the image review option chosen.

    Sweet, thanks for the quick reply here. You know, I thought MF-ing would be harder but it doesn't seem so bad. Different, yes, but not impossible. Plus, it's great that you can get some information in the OVF/EVF. I'd love to try my hands at one before purchase. Now comes the fun part of choosing which camera to buy...this epic X100s or little brother X20. Hmm....BOTH?? Lol, thanks for the quick review, mate.

    Wow! This is really great tutorial! Thanks! This covers one of two issues i had with x100t, which i absolutely adore otherwise. The other being very contrasty pictures. According to histogram the exposure should be on spot but then in LR it is just dark and contrasty pic. Any idea why that could be? I understand i wont have the same result as with my 5dmkii but i still feel like i am doing something terribly wrong. Thanks guys. You rock!

    • @dqstudios
      @dqstudios  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It may just be the Lightroom RAW engine vs Fuji's in-camera processing. I find when I import into Lightroom much of the great JPEG goodness that Fuji made in-camera becomes dull and lifeless.

    • @krystofkalina3882
      @krystofkalina3882 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am shooting RAW with my x100t and always so happy with the preview in my camera and so disappointed with whatever has happened to them in LR. Its actually everything : blacks, exposure, grain, colours. I guess you wouldn't want to make a video on your x100/s/t workflow, would you? : ) Thank again and greetings from Prague.

  • @dqstudios
    @dqstudios  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Jason. Re: focus on someone walking toward you. It's not the X100s' strength, so really it would do a horrible job. 2 options if you must:
    1. pre-focus on a spot in front of the person and wait for them to walk into that spot to release the shutter (but you sacrifice moment)
    2. Use AFC and don't touch the shutter until you want to take the pic. But the shutter lag sucks and afc stops upon shutter press.
    Can't win.

  • @dqstudios
    @dqstudios  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Definitely. I'm finding I'm always in Manual Focus (not AF-S) so have no choice in AF size. Too bad you have to trade-off accuracy for speed :(

  • @dqstudios
    @dqstudios  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    (Focus ring continued) ... when you rotate the focus ring fast, it will allow you to swing from 4" to infinity with less than a 1/2 turn. If you tweak it gently, it will hardly budge, allowing accurate focusing. It take a bit to get used to but I'm liking it more as I use it more.

    You can use everything with the OVF, but crop lines are off when shooting objects nearby. When in OVF set to MF, the viewfinder will quickly switch to EVF when the lens focus ring is moved, then switch back to OVF when (a) you press the shutter 1/2 way or (b) press the Command Rocker.
    Focus ring is electronic (not physically coupled to lens ... but neither is my Nikkor G-glass) but optimized pretty well ...

    Ok, now how do prevent a close up to be soft at f2? Or even any photo taken around 2 feet and not in macro mode? Anything I take at short distance, close up or not are soft, it has a soft creamy look to it. It's all fine at f5.6, sometime ok at f4.
    I don't think the x100 had the problem, nore the xpro...

      f2 looks good on ours, even close up. Not sure what to suggest except to (a) clean lens (b) ensure focus confirmation is on before shutter release and (c) and send test pics to Fuji for review?

    I have just picked up a x100s for $350 and the thing i was most concerned about was the autofocus... this video is fantastic. Thank you.
