    Saburo Sakai said the “P40 was to be feared at low altitude...” I read a German Me109 Ace quoted as saying, “attempting to turn fight a P-40 was suicide.” I read an American P-40 Ace say that he’d often shaken off a multiple Me-109’s by performing an “eye popping turn”. The anecdotes of those who said the P-40 was an unmaneuverable slug are pure rubbish. The roll rate of the plane is fantastic. In its ideal altitude, it rolls and turns better than the P-51. See Jeff Ethel’s tube in which he takes out a P-40 and demonstrates how fast it rolls. He says (and he flew one a lot) it turns and rolls far better than a P-51. It also took damage far better than a P-51, which famously was doomed by perforating a coolant hose which were very vulnerable on the type and why they stopped using the P-51 for ground attack in Korea.
    Sad they didn’t go forward with the P-40Q or at least shoehorned a two-stage supercharger in the P-40. It they had dropped the 1,500 hp Allison’s they used in the P-38 into the P-40, it would have been a very much superior air superiority fighter than the P-51, which had greatly exaggerated maneuverability. The P-47 actually had a better kill:loss ratio. Also the top P-47 Aces survived the war largely.

      Provided a P-40 driver kept his nose down and speed up he could fight the Zero and Oscar on very even terms. The Zero could easily turn inside a P-40 at low speed, but the reverse was true at high speed. The Zero could outclimb the P-40 at low speed, but at high speed (particularly when coming out of a dive) the P-40 would easily outclimb the Zero. Of course in all scenarios the P-40 could outdive the Zero with ease, meaning any Japanese pilot attempting to dive away from a fight wouldn't be able to shake his pursuer (and Allied pilots could always break away from a disadvantageous position). Of course every maneuver bleeds off speed, so these advantages a P-40 possessed were fleeting, but as long as the pilot resisted the temptation to get into a low and slow turning fight with a Zero then he'd have a very good chance of winning an engagement.

To be honest I was too young and didn't like to read textbooks that could have teached me this. Of course the public library hadn't much books about painting aircraft esp. war planes. :D

      See Chanelle’s tactics for the AVG or the Port Moresby defenders. In flying a P-40, if you kept your speed over 275 mph where the Zero’s aerilons started to freeze up, the Zero was screwed. If the P-40 went heads up against the Zero machine guns blazing, the Zero usually lost that fight blowing up.

    Ah, the Zero vs the P-40 debate. In their respective environments, each had their high points. The Zero was designed for long ranges and traditional dogfighting. It was, by virtue of it light weight and large ailerons, very maneuverable. But as the speed of air combat built, it became harder to maneuver and because it lacked self-sealing fuel tanks it was very susceptible to fire. The P-40 was heavier and had the 0.50 caliber machine guns giving it a high rate of fire with a heavy punch. Once the pilots were taught to not try to dogfight with the Zero, but use the P-40’s superior speed in a dive and better high speed maneuverability, it became a much closer fight. It all finally came down to pilot skill.

  • @tartredarrow
    @tartredarrow 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Excellent demonstration of how these birds were actually flown. They were not very maneuverable, but they were fast, rugged, heavily gunned, and could climb pretty well. Lends them well to dive attacks, ground support, and shoot and scoot tactics, especially in the Asian Theater. Against the germans, you might not have so much luck in the late war, with the Luftwaffe aircraft being able to out dive the P40 and with greater top speed.

    • @chuckbflo
      @chuckbflo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The P-40 Warhawk had quite a few strengths, with overall maneuverability being one of most well-known and appreciated. The Warhawk was considered to have the finest aileron performance of any WWII aircraft, with a roll rate at least twice that of the Japanese opposition, and significantly better than practically all other Axis aircraft. The P-40 was also faster in level flight at all altitudes than any Japanese fighter, and on par with all others until the final year of the war. The Warhawk could also outdive virtually any Allied or Axis aircraft, perhaps excepting only the P-47 Thunderbolt. It was also very heavily armed and armored, making it both one of the most lethal and survivable types of the war.

    • @chuckbflo
      @chuckbflo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The P-40's climb rate was actually considered its worst attribute, as was its poor high-altitude performance, due to the lack of a two-stage supercharger. But the design was almost perfectly suited to the type of air-to-air and air-to-ground tactics that virtually all the most prolific WWII-era aces discovered and perfected. This meant that the WWI-style slow-speed dogfight was a thing of the past, though it took the Allies a few years-and a few downed P-40s-to finally figure this out. The Japanese were apparently alone in never realizing this, continuing to build slow, delicate, lightly armored, lightly armed aircraft whose only real advantage was in low-speed maneuverability and climb rate.

    • @chuckbflo
      @chuckbflo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The point is, you have your P-40 strengths/weaknesses exactly reversed.

    • @tartredarrow
      @tartredarrow 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      chuckbflo I just meant that a common tactic with the P40's was they would dive down building speed, attack, zoom back up to altitude, maneuver on the apex and come back around.

    • @chuckbflo
      @chuckbflo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      tartredarrow Yes, the “dive-zoom-climb” was a tactic that suited the P-40’s strengths well. In fact, this was the tactic discovered to work best by most Allied and Axis aces (except the Japanese) no matter what aircraft type they were flying. The old, slow-speed, turning dogfights of WWI, no matter how glamorous and romantic, were by the middle of WWII thus considered anachronistic and highly discouraged by virtually all air forces (again, except Japan). Almost no matter the equipment, entering a slow-speed dogfight was a comparatively risky proposition-a crapshoot-producing far worse results than dive-zoom-climb.

    The P-40 is still 1 of the best planes around. Not many fly. It is so funny that during Korea that a Corsair was the first prop driven plane to shot down a jet fighter in the 50s. But in reality it was a P-51 that shot down a jet fighter during WW2. A German fighter was landing after attacking B-17s and heading in. Yet the history books show Korea as the first engagement of prop vs jets. .
