In late 1999, the sight of this Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk, A29-448, swooping through the air, was still an unfulfilled dream of the original owner, Charles Darby.
The aircraft, was a Royal Australian Air Force P-40, which had been operated by number 75 squadron, in the Milne Bay and Goodenough Island areas, of Papua New Guinea, during 1943.
Abandoned at the side of the runway after a landing accident, the aircraft was recovered by Charles in the early 1970s, and the full restoration project began in the mid-1990s.
This short film shows the aircraft in the final stages of restoration, as described by co-owner, and (then) future P-40 pilot, Garth Hogan.
Since its first flight in early 2000, the aircraft has been a favourite on the New Zealand airshow circuit, and is regularly seen at airshows the length and breadth of the country.

That’s a beautiful airplane! The P-40 has been one of my favorites since I was a very small child. 😊👍🏻

Love seeing that P-40 restored! I used to live down the street from General Tex and Maizy Hill. I had the AVG "blood chit" leather jacket and Revell model P-40! Tex used to tell us stories of the AVG Flying Tigers.

Beautiful sound. Have seen one fly at Temora a few years back. Definitely one of my favourite aircraft.

Garth was one of the owners of Pioneer Aero in 2006 when we contracted to build the P-40 which went to Vintage Wings of Canada. I worked with him for 3 years on that. Excellent experience, with excellent people -- and they turned out a truly excellent airplane.
I wish ours had had the operating .50s though, like Garth's!
I also wish that interviewer had the foggiest clue of what was going on, and had done some actual homework. Garth was quite kind to her. Considering.

Amazing resolution in the video. Some vids taken today aren't nearly as sharp.
