    Hi,
    Rogers LS7’s have Celestion HF1001 silk soft dome, that’s why yours didn’t sound titanium.
    It’s the Rogers LS7t with the metal dome tweeters..
    I have a pair of LS7’s coming to compare with Spendor SP2/2’s.
    Cheers for the videos 👍

    Hi Kelvin, love your reviews. I have to comment on this one.
    I have a pair of Rogers Ls5 speakers. I bought these new back in 1983/4. I always thought they were better than the Ls7. I still run these speakers. Every time i play them they make me smile and never tire of listening to them. I believe these are the most understated speaker to be manufactured.

    So pleased to see a review of LS7s the speakers I have been enjoying for a few years. I switch between these and a pair of old A&R 6s which are equally good. In fact A&Rs offer great vintage value the equal of modern day IMHO and would make a great review. Thanks Kelvin and please keep the videos coming.

    I recently auditioned and bought Rogers LS33 bookshelf speakers, I had similar experience as you described. These British make does not wow you in the first sight, you have to be patient and listen to it for a while. Once you given enough time to understand then you know what to expect from these. Initially I moved on to another brand but after listening it again for a long period I started loving these. Like you said it sounded Big, clean & neutral.

    Warm lushes sound. I had both during my intro years into Hi Fi.
    Read somewhere that that the materials used in the cabinet and the design was an integral part of that Rogers Bristish sound. Warm and lushes velvety but lacking attack, dynamic range and excitement.

      @@briancampbell7712 I'm not sure how the Pro40 versions differ sonically from the stock dm4s so my observations might not be valid in your case. The rubber bungs I made were for the small open port holes under the mid/bass cone - not the surrounds. It does affect the tightness of the bass but maybe not as much as speaker placement/height and a set of good filled stands. I listen mainly to jazz and acoustic/vocal music and love how these speakers reproduce the sound.

      @normanswift5048 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@briancampbell7712 I made the bungs out of some spare rubber but you can buy them online for not a lot. They restrict airflow out of the cabinet which reduces the volume of bass but makes it tighter/cleaner - not to everyone's taste but worth experimenting with. The driver surrounds had been replaced before I bought the speakers and are in very good condition so apart from turning and tightening the cones (as you described) they were good to go.

    Great work Kelvin. This video clip is the most convincing stereo recording from TH-cam. I send the voice of this video thru a Bluetooth device into my amplifier and listening to your voice by a pair of Audiomaster LS3/5a. The soundstage and stereo images is spot on. The amplifier is a NAD3020 and the speakers are ls3/5a BBC monitor. I used my iPhone X and send it to Esinkin BT adapter. I was surprised to hear such great stereo images. Your talks and walked around the table and behind the speakers. And the sounds when you tap on the speaker and remove the screen from B&W DM4 are all recorded clearly and precisely . I thought you had a sophisticated microphone setup for this video. I suggest you go listen and watch your own work again using your own ls3/5a BBC monitor. Compared to your other videos clips. You should noticed the other sounds like mono recording and this one sounds like stereo. Just use your iPhone 11 as playback source and whatever Bluetooth device you have into your preamplifier. Thanks for a very good review. I have a pair of LS7s that I bought in 1988. They still sound superb 30+ years later. Your description of their "neutral" sound is exactly right. You are also right that they can get a bit "shouty" (perfect word) when played loud in the treble range. However, my experience is that is worse with CDs than LPs and is also at a "bother your neighbours" level of volume. It can be ameliorated by adjusting the treble response down a bit. I am mostly a classical listener and I seek a "realistic" sound - I want the strings to sound like they do in Carnegie Hall. The LS7s deliver that. Also just wonderful for solo piano music (think Debussy Preludes). In popular repertory they are perfectly fine (Wichita Lineman as remastered on CD sounds unbelievable!!) but these are not JBL style "spectacular" speakers if you know what I mean. If you want the "BBC Studio Monitor" sound and are the kind of listener I am you are going to be very happy if you can get a good pair of these. I would happily pay up to $800 for a pair if I were you. I also listen to a lot of organ repertoire and these speakers deliver the sound you hear in the Cathedral without ridiculous bone-shaking sub-woofer type sound which - guess what - isn't realistic and isn't what you hear live...........my other equipment is high end SONY CD player and SONY DAT all driven by NAD 7275PE amp.

    Love all these BBC inspired speakers. Always find that there’s a certain charm about bextrene cones even though theoretically they are not ideal cones being a tad heavy. Try to get a pair of Harbeth HL-mk4 or earlier models. Heard the mk4 in 1986 & was very impressed. They used a then brand new cone material called TPX pioneered by Audax from france. This TPX cone works better than all previous poly or bextrene cones being more transparent, detailed & more dynamic.

      wow that sounds nice!...have not heard of the Harbeth Mk4...maybe that is the one Alan Shaw has such an admiration for and one of his favorites since I believe that was one of his first designs? guess it's better than the m30 and shl5 plus ?

    • @ganck1147
      @ganck1147 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@briancampbell7712 the Harbeth mk4 was the last model designed by Harbeth’s founder Dudley Harwood before selling the company to current owner Alan Shaw. After Alan took over, he designed the HL-Compact & subsequent HL-5. Both use the TPX cone material and at that time, TPX was considered revolutionary compared to polypropylene & the earlier bextrene. However, in somewhere 1994 or 95 thereabouts, Alan Shaw came up with an even better cone material called Radial. Radial was first used on the then brand new HL-Compact 7 & subsequently SHL-5. Then came the monitor series. Today, radial is still used on all Harbeth speakers. So is radial better than TPX? To me, yes & no. Just like TPX was more transparent & detailed than bextrene, Radial however was even more detailed than TPX. However, there’s a certain charm about TPX just like there is also a certain charm about bextrene that is hard to describe. Today, even if u manage to get a pair of Mk4s, they may not be performing up to original spec, being so old & all the components in the crossover may have degraded due to age.

    Neutral is good. Some speakers call attention to themselves with boomy bass and sizzling highs. Flashy and cool to the novice but not satisfying long term to a trained ear. Brit speakers do have a more "studio monitor" style. Focused and bass to around 40Hz. Most American systems favor wide dispersion and a big stereo image. We've talked of this before. It's hard to find some Euro speakers here in the states. As some gringo brands i.e. EPI, Ohm, Genesis, Allison, Polk, E/V and Acoustic Research are harder for you guys "overseas" to acquire. That makes your videos so interesting. Would love to see some vintage Brit/American speaker comparisons. Another swell video, you got style mate.

      Brit speakers are very understated & that’s what i love about them. They usually have a smooth & beguiling sound that invites the listener into the music. Like what Kevin mentioned, they don’t wow you at first but once it gets under your skin, there’s no turning back. I was introduced to the british sound in early 80s & far preferred the british sound more than the american sound from AR, JBL, Klipsch & Altec. The americans at that time also agreed that the british sound is about quality whereas the ameican sound is about quantity. Take your pick.

    • @martyjewell5683
      @martyjewell5683 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ganck1147- Understated, is a hallmark of neutral speakers. Strong bass only when it's present in the source material. During the mid to late 1970's stateside speaker companies were divided into two camps, East Coast and West Coast (aka Rock Speakers) sound. Brands you mention; JBL, Klipsch, Altec and even Cerwin Vega opted for that style sound and weren't as accurate. Forward, prominent (hyped up) mids and rolled off bass below 40Hz (or so). East Coast brands favored neutral, balanced sound with a solid foundation. No listener fatigue here. Mid 70's Japanese speakers had horrible response curves. I've listened to late 70's speakers from Celestion-Ditton, Warfdales and KEF all sounded quite good. Nestorovic too. Not quite correct stating that American speakers (and ears) were about quantity only. Maybe you ain't heard too many Yankee loudspeakers?? Quantity yes, but accuracy too. I got serious in hifi gear after military service in 1974. NYC had plenty of really great audio shops in those days.

      @@martyjewell5683 oh yes i heard plenty american spks. Popular ones like magico & wilson are two good examples of quantity sound. They have stupendous dynamics, bass, larger than life soundstage but when when comes to tonal accuracy, emotional fidelity & absolute musicality these often cannot compare to british counterparts. As i mentioned elsewhere here, a friend of mine used to own spendor S100 & Wilson watt/puppy but far prefer to listen to the spendor S100 when playing classical music & vocals. He likens the spendor aa a spk to get fully involved emotionally & musically into the music whereas the Wilson is good for playing test tracks to impress friends .

    Rogers would be worth having the crossovers updated ever thought about doing it? not difficult as long you got soldering iron, the crossover will be tired the capacitors will be tired probably all-cap and you could put better grade capacitors and resistors what they didn't have back then, and inductors, what you're describing at high-volume sounds like a collapse in the magnetic field in an induction coil, can go for Air core in the Signal Path be better but even upgrading the resistors and capacitors will be beneficial dramatically. Keep them to the same value you might need to make a bigger crossover board use a bit of hardboard. Clarity capacitors, are very good and for resistor go with thin or thick film resistor 50 watt minimum rather expensive around £6 or something each but 0.1% precise, you need 50 Watts will otherwise it will get too hot you can go higher 140 Watts quite common just changing out those two components would be great. Massive improvement and if there are any Air core inductors pop them in hot candle wax. put a piece of cardboard around the inductor with a tie wrap two cover the whole inductor in hot to calling wax make's a big difference on inductance stability.
    Or better still go active unit you can buy a complete unit built but look for something with a minimum of 24db roloff adjustment or you can buy a kit from Nelson pass £130 what will go down to 14 Hz design by linkwitz for he's speaker systems, it is DSP or ASP if you're not into playing records go dsp if you want pure analogue go asp.
    They would be good candidates they sound good now it will sound fantastic with a bit of updating.
    This is a difficult thing but you can make a metal tweeter sound soft by painting it with PVA glue using a non waterproof because then you can remove it and diluted by at least 10% the glue a very very thin coat go round the diaphragm but leave the centre untouched about 5 mm diameter give or take

      There is indeed such thing as, "American sound" v "British Sound". Especially when we talk about designs based on the BBC technical standards (the Rogers, Spendor, Harbeth etc family of monitors).
      The LS7 comes from that 'stable' and as such, is very neutral as Kelvin points out in his video.
      That 'neutrality' means that, each instrument sounds exactly as it should, without any "extras" (i.e. coloration etc).
      The downside of this is, bad recordings sound exactly as that, bad! 😏😏
