    Tip #11: Follow the conventions of barefoot walking/running
    Do not heel strike when you move around. If your heel hits the ground first on your next step, all of the stress returned back from the ground is conducted to your whole body through the skeleton. Instead, try to perform a forefoot (or at least mid-foot) strike to absorb much of this stress.
    It is maybe not the case for all those foamy-soled shoes, but why not consider? :) More details here: xeroshoes.com/barefoot-running-tips/how-to-walk-barefoot/

    Hi iPhondo! I love my Osmo, but it does take a bit to learn. I use a Note4 and if you have the electronic stabilization on it will freak out. They do not play nice together. With that off it is awesome. Also, I picked up the DJI extension pole and it is actually really good. The tripod bottom is great, but is is a little wonky fully extended. But, Osmo doesn't seem to mind and you can totally get mini drone shots over objects (like cars and such). It would be cool if it had some controls (like the joystick) at the base. It also gives you a two-handed option for holding ninja-ing out. That white one is preeeedy... Great review as always! Franny

    Thank you! I have been scouring the web for an answer to the problem of iPhone OIS and gimbals, and yours has been the first and only explanation that makes sense -- and it is especially compelling that you actually show what is physically happening (at 4:39). Everyone who has been frustrated by this OIS issue should watch this video!
    I noticed that in your recent test of the Osmo Mobile 2 up at the Observatory you did NOT use an iPhone but rather Android phones when running. Is this OIS-gimbal issue the reason? Have you given up on using iPhones with gimbals in action shots until Apple creates a fix in their new phones?
    Also, any chance you will be reviewing the Zhiyum Smooth 4 anytime soon?
    Thanks!

    Tip no. 1 may explain sudden loss of connectivity and overheating of the gimbal...having the phone balanced correctly BEFORE turning on the gimbal is crucial!
    Mine, somehow, had become out of balance (possibly from moving between an iPhone 5 and 6) and I hadn't even thought about re-balancing and was relying on the gimbal to balance the phone as per your demonstration.

    I'm glad you mentioned the Filmic Pro app and how to use the image stabilization properly, cause I tell you, my first video sucked big time! But now with your 10 tips they should be better. And yes... I agree running in running shoes (that is sneakers) is better then hiking boots!

    Hey iPhonedo, you should try Procam with the 4K Max option (it's an in-app purchase), it seems the better thing to use with the Osmo. Footages are ultra sharp because the app shoots 8mpx photos at 30fps and then put them in a 4k sequence and videos are very very much more stable than what you get with the stock camera.

    @JadeSambrook 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I always enjoy your helpful and entertaining videos, but I have to say on this one you are 100% wrong about the OIS in your tip #3. The truth is that OIS cannot be turned off at all, not even by Apple. It is built into the lens module and there is no on/off switch for it. 3rd party apps like FiLMiC Pro can only turn off the software-based stabilization (IS), or what is known as Apple's 'Auto' and 'Cinematic' stabilization. OIS (optical) and IS (software) are two different things entirely.

    • @iPhonedo
      @iPhonedo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Jade, how do you explain the the lens moving around when ois is on and staying in its place when ois is off between 4:07 to 5:00 ?

    • @JadeSambrook
      @JadeSambrook 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I made the exact same comment on the DJI Forums in reply to somebody advising others to turn off the OIS with FiLMiC Pro. DJI replied to my comment by confirming that in fact OIS cannot be turned off and that only the software based IS can be turned off.
      I also made the exact same comment on Twitter in reply to a tweet where somebody was advising others to turn off the OIS in the FiLMiC Pro app, and FiLMiC Pro replied by confirming that their app cannot turn off OIS, but instead can only turn off the software based IS.
      I can't explain how or why the OIS is not moving in the lens module when you do not have a camera app open. This is definitely interesting. But, if and when you do have a camera app open, there is simply no on/off switch for the OIS. And turning off the IS in FiLMiC Pro does exactly as indicated, it turns off the IS, not the OIS.
      Regardless, your video was still very helpful and I am going to try many of the things I leaned from your video to improve my use of the DJI Osmo Mobile. Last but not least, you are the first person to clearly explain and show what Pitch Lock is, so thank you tremendously for that! :)

    • @marcotorre7761
      @marcotorre7761 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Jade, same here.
      This is ProCam Support
      "Thanks for getting in touch with us.
      ProCam 4’s 4K Max video resolution ($4.99 extra add-on) disables both OID and DIS.
      Please don’t hesitate to contact us again if you have any other questions."
      These are from Filmic
      "Thank you for writing in. There is no way to disable OIS unfortunately. The Optical Image Stabilization is always on when using the iPhone 6s Plus, or the iPhone 7 / 7 Plus. The app's stabilization button is used to enabled or disable the device's digital image stabilization capabilities.
      Now if you do see a jello-like movement with OSMO or another gimbal.. DJI has been recommending customers adopt something referred to as 'the ninja walk'. A quick search yields all sorts of info on this: www.google.com/webhp?hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjwwbnB6KrPAhVQ-GMKHYzWB50QPAgD#hl=en&q=dji+ninja+walk"
      Then I told them about Apple Developer Forum:
      forums.developer.apple.com/message/185922#185922
      And this is their reply
      "Well that's the issue.. there is differing information coming out of Apple on this subject. We use that very method to control the stabilization in our app.... we use Apple's stabilization so that exact method is what is behind our button to turn on/off stabilization.
      We have heard the same thing as what was in that post and yet we have also heard from other reputable sources (inside Apple) that the OIS is separate and cannot be enabled/disabled by a third party developer.
      Which is accurate? who knows... We have chosen to not mislead folks and take the conservative approach here. But yes there are some out there who swear that FiLMiC Pro can disable OIS.
      -----> The fact of the matter is that for most people this is essentially a non-issue. Many users will never see an issue here, and for those that do, a few simple changes in how you use the OSMO (or any gimbal) will be a satisfactory solution. This issue has been made to be something much larger than it actually is."
      So, where does the truth lie?
      @iPhonedo
      thank you very much for your review ;)

    • @marcotorre7761
      @marcotorre7761 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Βеʀƙ Ӧzcẫñ that's true, but we don't know if it can be switched off

    • @JadeSambrook
      @JadeSambrook 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Apple had sent me the iOS Device Compatibility Reference Sheet for developers which includes both the 'AVCapturePhotoOutput' and the 'AVCaptureVideoStabilizationMode' classes. Nowhere is it indicated that OIS can be turned off by an app developer. Put it this way, if the physical and mechanical OIS could be turned off, then you can bet that app developers like FiLMiC Pro and DJI themselves would have utilized this option. But they didn't, because they couldn't.

    another thing you can do is buy one of the many attachments, such as the z-axis that attaches to the Osmo as well as the Mobile, basically acting as a steadicam arm and acting as a 4th axis. MUCH smoother video with it as the 4th axis accounts for a lot of the up and down movement when running.
