In this podcast, Raj engages in a conversation with Tarun Mehta, the Co-founder and CEO of Ather Energy. Tarun, with passion and conviction, shares the tale of Ather's journey, highlighting the development of a robust charging infrastructure with 1,500 stations across the country. Tarun proudly emphasizes that India leads the global electric scooter market, outpacing even China. The CEO reveals the unique selling points of Ather providing compelling reasons to choose electric vehicles (EVs).
The podcast pivots towards a discussion on the challenges faced by Indian companies in becoming global brands. Tarun sheds light on the historical context of India's economic and industrial development. He emphasizes the significance of building institutions and a long-term vision for sustainable success. They also discuss India's inclination towards imitation over innovation. Drawing parallels with global tech giants like Apple and HP, they explore why India lags in the creation of world-class products. Tarun and Raj examine the importance of thinking long-term & building institutions.
Tarun shares the intriguing story of Ather Energy's early investments, with angel investors and Sachin Bansal's pivotal role. He explains how Sachin Bansal's belief in the company translated into a substantial investment, defining Ather's growth trajectory. Tarun's narrative unfolds with Ather's journey from its initial funding stages to achieving gross margin profitability.Tarun also shares his approach to brand building. He emphasizes trust, quality, and a commitment to delivering on promises. Tarun endorses the importance of selling a dream that people can believe in and the value of a brand's consistency over time. Make sure you watch this podcast till the end for some brilliant insights!

I have heard Tarun earlier and following Ather since last 5-6 Years. This was the best interview till date of Ather CEO..n I sincerely believe in his vision n know that in coming years Ather will beat Activa and other legacy players..They just need more relevant marketing and a 1-2 products below 1 lakh..Rest people of Bharat will take care..

Hi Tarun, if you or your team is reading this, please look into enclosed reverse leaning trikes. Like the AKO Trike. A product like that is very much needed in the Indian market. It has environmental protection, improved safety over bikes, and more stable than bikes. More importantly, cars are getting expensive, and after COVID, not everyone is comfortable with public transport or riding a two wheeler. Thus, there is a need for a weather protected 2 seater vehicle within 3-5 lakh range for middle and upper middle class office goers. This is a much needed vehicle category, which no one significant is making in the Indian market.

    Commenting as Ather user;
    1. I do not agree him saying customers need not pay to use navigation, it's a paid subscription service. Inspite of paying premium amount, customers have to pay in addition for the service.
    2. Sending navigation from WhatsApp received link is a new feature, I do not agree him saying this exist from 2 years. This also gets disabled once the subscription gets expired
    3. Without subscription the display on the dashboard is obsolete, except for which it shows the speed and acceleration

Still I would not buy Ather because
    1. the extra amount you are charging , I can fill my Activa tank for like 7 years with that same money .
    2. Long time to charge the vehicle , I am too lazy to charge my watch and to charge an electric vehicle is a hassle
    3. If you are charging so much , why would I have mental pressure of finding charging station ( in case i travel long distance)
    4. What if after 5 years my battery dies or goes to 50% (i dont trust your statement that it would fall to ~75%) , then i would still have to spend large amount .
5.If I sell my 2 wheeler or Activa , I get good resale , will any1 buy old Atger after 5-6 years from me
All points can be debatable like reducing battery costs etc , but 1 st point holds a lot of importance .

Just a small feedback, sometimes I feel you are out from reality. Indian brands like Royal Enfield & Tata are global brands operating in US, UK & EU, Tata owns Jaguar & Land Rover. Hero, TVS and Bajaj are highly respected in African continent. You are doing great podcast and I listen it everytime but please have a good research and don't stay in bubble. There are many listed auto ancillaries companies working with BMW, Audi, Mercedes and other global brands as well. Also, "Apne ancestors ke pass bohot kuch tha sir" :)

We also need to know that, When there is a largest group of researchers in an RND Department, it takes the company like Ather to the next level when all the members totally realise that they are working to build the company. We have to totally realise that, 'no matter how much more work I myself seem to do here than other members in this room, I should always maintain a teamwork mindset, rather than ranting for selfish acclamation'.

  • @rmnair90

Firstly, it is an absolutely mind-blowing 🤯 interview. Entrepreneurs can learn from, and be inspired by, this interview.
One point regarding the causes for India failing to build brands (chapter @16:47). Tarun goes back to the 60s. I think that is not correct. The real roots lie in central planning that started almost as soon as independence. That created what Rajaji named the "licence-permit raj". That was epitomized by the two model car market - Ambassador & Fiat (later Premier). You do not need engineers if the Morris plant, complete with molds and presses, can be imported. There is no need for marketing in a captive market.
The entrepreneurial spirit of Jamshedji Tata, Walchands (what is now HAL), Sarabhais (chemicals) , Prof. T.K. Gajjar, Prof. A.S. Kotibhasker and B.D. Amin (Alembic), V. O. Chidambaram Pillai (shipping) ... The list is long. Thankfully that spirit survived.

Ather and OLA ne abhi tak accha kaam kiya hai, agar china ko India main aney diya, tab real competition start hoga.... Blade battery world main sabsey safe battery hai.... Jo abhi tak OLA and Ather use nahi kar rahey... But if we compare both, than OLA is best in all aspects except after sales service.
