    • @SigmaticGames
      @SigmaticGames 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      That's generally the main problem, conversions from Halogen to LED often require changing the housing as to not dazzle other drivers. People skip this step to save costs. The problem isn't the LED lights themselves, as all the grumpy old men in the comments suggest, but rather corner cutting. I've been driving cars with LEDs from factory and have never been highbeamed to shut off the lights.

    • @realShadowKat
      @realShadowKat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@SigmaticGames Totally this. I replaced the halogens in my Hyundai with the Boslla kit that Scotty talks about and noticed they were totally aimed too high. Fortunately the set-screws were able to bring them down to the proper level.

    Should be noted that the beams should be adjusted to a proper height by the set screws on the headlamp unit. A lot of people just toss the bulbs in and go which is a huge part of the problem.
    Moving from one technology to another, often the tilt of the beam needs to be adjusted. This is the main reason a lot of people get "blinded"
    I did replace the halogens in my Hyundai with the Boslla LED set that Scotty talks about and they are definitely brighter, but no one oncoming would notice because I had to adjust them down quite a bit.

    I tried LED light bulbs for a year in my 09 Equinox Sport. I put the original halogen bulbs back in. The hi beams in the LED weren’t any brighter than the low beams. And you really couldn’t adjust them very well. I think it depends on your headlight housing if LEDs work properly. The halogen headlight housings were designed for halogen bulbs.

    Adaptive beam technology is such a good example of things coming full circle again. The origins of "High" and "Low" has nothing to do with power. As auto lights were originally gas fired. The projector literally had a rod connected to them that you pulled back for Low which dipped the headlight down and pushed forward for High which raised it up more parallel to the ground.

  • @bugs3081
    @bugs3081 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    You forgot to factor in that electrical systems increase resistance with age which typically decreases total voltage and overall light output of halogen. I used to get flashed all the time on my Mustang. As it had aged the lights have dimmed even with electrical maintenance, new bulbs, and a high output alternator.
    Also, as for using HID bulbs in a standard reflector you were getting flashed because the focal point of light is not in the stock location so you beam was different from factory. Yes they are definitely brighter but putting in a reflector not specifically designed for HID it makes the problems much worse as light shines in places, IE higher, than designed by the factory. It's the same reason good aftermarket LED bulbs mimic the single filament and you can also tune the exact location to have the factory light spread.

He purchased two aircraft landing lights and if an approaching car refused to dim his lights he flashed the aircraft landing lights. Problem solved. With today's bright headlight LED options it is important to make sure the new beam pattern is the same as the original. If they shine to high they will blind oncoming cars and the lights will have to be manually adjusted downward. I've done a lot of headlight restorations with all different kinds of kits and can tell you that the Sylvanias kit is the absolute best. You don't use a drill which means it takes an hour per headlight to do it well (the first sanding step is the most important!). When i was little, it was just a screw driver to change out round or square sealed beams. Took like just few minutes to do. Now, if im lucky, takes like 15-20 min, removing plastic panels, squeezing down on the plastic bumper and wiggling the plastic headlight housing out to reach the back, pop open the round cover and remove the bulb/socket.

    i have a combination of HID & LED light bulbs on my truck. they are very bright, but you have to be responsible and take your vehicle to an empty, flat parking lot and aim that beam properly! it will make a huge difference. the traffic lights are getting brighter too. i think they have been changed over to LED technology.

    Aerodynamic glass headlight windshields were used by many car models until 1967 in the USA when they were made illegal for new cars. VW Beetles and Kombis used them. Jaguar XKEs used them. Some others also.
    For sale in the USA they had US standard sealed beams, either 4 x 5-3/4" or 2 x 7" behind the glass. The only problem I ever knew of is that the space between the glass cover and the sealed beam was not airtight and would have dirt gradually collect on the inside of the cover glass and on the sealed beam lens. Most drivers never bothered to clean them.
    In 1967 Citroën restyled the nose of their D models, going to four headlights and aerodynamic cover glasses. They were immediately illegal for new cars in the USA, so instead of two ~7" high/low lights and two ~5" long range lights they got four 5-3/4" sealed beam lights, no glass covers. In 1970 their SM got six sort-of rectangular lights: two high/low lights, two high beam lights and two long range lights under aerodynamic glass covers. All illegal for new cars in the USA of course.
    The aerodynamic plastic headlight units of today are actually sealed beams. For the USA they have silicone "rubber" seals on the bulb unit. The only time they're not sealed is during bulb changes. The plastic light unit is the outer lens of this sealed beam unit.

    I’ll stick to my 5k HIDs and change em out once a year. The output of light is worth it. I also switched my turning signals to LEDs to make them WAY brighter.

    HID lights need a special light assembly to cut them off from shining into the eyes of oncoming traffic. You can look right into them and they don't blind you. When I put the brights on, they mechanically lift the shield and lift the lights. In MN they have saved me from hitting deer many times.

    • @Gus11445
      @Gus11445 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many people put them in regular assemblies that aren't meant for them and then you blind everyone.

    The issue isn't brightness, it's poor headlight aim and idiots running bright LEDs for fog lamps in heavy traffic

      @DiamondScuff 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bingo. you can aim the headlights so they dont go above half of the person car infront of you, quite an easy fix. but retards just throw the lights in and blind you.

    • @practicalguy973
      @practicalguy973 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DiamondScuff this only works on flat roads and where I'm from its all hills and valleys. You can aim the lights down really far and they still blind people over long hills.

    • @DiamondScuff
      @DiamondScuff 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@practicalguy973 if you put it low enough even going up and down hills it wont do too much blinding, even if your in a truck. the hill would have to be like 70+ degrees to go up enough to make the lights blind the other person.

    Scotty, having lived in Germany for quite a few years, I can you that you are close in your explanation. It comes down to the US laws regarding SEALED HEADLIGHT BULBS! Forever in Europe, they used non sealed glass bulbs that weren't considered safe here in the US. Our sealed bulbs back then imploded during an accident because they were sealed up under a vacuum. The unsealed glass bulbs in europe had the replaceable internal bulb you could change out, but in an accident, large shards of glass went flying. Then came along the crappy plastic headlight housings we have today and as they say, the rest is history.

    In the early 1970’s, a friend of mine bought a late 1950’s model Cadillac for $100 (as I recall). It had a sensor on the dash facing forward that that would automatically dim the high beam lights back to low beam when a car approached from the other direction, then would return them to high beam after the car passed.
