Love Rick's stuff...growin up as a drummer, I had to grasp a piano to find out the concepts of theory.. I still use my ears to figure out scales and stuff, but melodic patterns Rick shows here: I get a better grip on not being so shy on executing my music ideas.
This was an amazing stream as it showed me another to look at something I already saw. Much like the ambiguous image of the old woman/young woman, or the duck/rabbit. Mind blowing. Took me 2 viewings to finally see it - thanks as always Rick, you are indeed a treasure. Thanks for taking some out of your Fathers Day to hang with us, enjoy some time with your family!
This information is a big treasure to me. Rick is not only one of the best teachers ever, but also an incredible human with heavenly patience and dedication. I also see a few people in the chat making some pretty dumb comments.
Your channel has been huge for me Rick - thanks for everything. I'm a 'lapsed' musician who hasn't picked up a guitar or bass for over a decade, and you've inspired me to get back to it. I had my first jam in a decade a few nights ago, and loved it.
I'm a bass player doubles on guitar bass being my primary instrument I find your videos the most educational out there on TH-cam and I watch them at least a dozen times each I have learned more in the past year from your videos and I have my entire musical career is you sir are a brilliant genius
My Lord! This is a masterful lesson! One of the BEST ever on breaking down the theory with the use of the background lingering chord. This was brilliant and will certainly enhance my playing as well as any other guitar player and musician of any instrument. God bless you 4 this one!!✊🏾💯👏🏾👏🏾💣🎸🔥🔥👊🏾💪🏾🤘🏾🙏🏾😁
Joe Calandrella To reiterate:you are a treasure. Also, nice to see the humble Danelectro being so expertly employed. Such a fast neck, and my red version with stock tuners is nearly impossible to knock out of tune.
Is it weird that I've watched and liked dozens of your videos and don't play guitar? I have played woodwinds and brass, for years and I think I just enjoy the music theory. Also, I'm a music head in general. Keep doing what you do Rick. Rock On!
Gigantic Thanks Rick always, in 6 months having only played hand drums i've can now play piano guitar bass wind instruments while my hand drumming rhythms have improved greatly, simply following your creative practice ear training and theory vids. I will be eternally thankful for opening up what i never thought possible, making it so now any instrument is playable.
That “b5 minor pentatonic” (20:00) also works great over a dominant chord Over E Dom use the “G# min b5 pentatonic”. In other words, the one built in the 3rd of the dominant chord. Gives you the 3, 5, 6, b7, 9
I got your book a couple of days ago. I must say it's very informative. Enjoying the book so far and can't wait to see the results in my knowledge of the fretboard once I thoroughly grasp the concept of this book.
Happy Fathers Day. Just bought the Beato Book. This topic is very intriguing - seems like the piece I've been missing with my playing. I hope to learn much more about these concepts. Cheers...
Holy Moley! My head exploded the first 5 minutes. The chord and scale theory left me in the dust. But the sounds and examples were oh so familiar and good to hear. Masterly played. Thanks for everything you do! Gonna buy you’re book!
Explained as it should. Great stuff Rick. For someone like myself that can't read a lick of music relating them to scales really opens a lot of doors for me. If you can put this in a book I'll be buying the first copy!
In the video, somebody asked about Eric Johnson sounding Pentatonics. Try this: instead of doing those fast sextuplet descending runs in Pentatonic boxes #1 and #4, try them in boxes #5 and #3, respectively. Say you're in E minor. The run would go from a G on the high E string to the open G an octave below, so G - E - D - B - A - G. Notice that every note you pull off "to" is from the E minor triad. Using Pentatonic Box #5, you get the notes E - D - B - A - G - E. This time the notes you pull off "from" are from the minor triad, and this has different sound.
so thats how Chiele Minucci does it, just hella fast and precise !!!!!!! freaking cool lesson, THANKS !!!!!!! root 2nd 3rd 5th, beautiful segment !!!!!!!
Rick, based on this video, I suggest a "What Makes This Song Great?" on a Zappa song - he sometimes used the approaches you're discussing here for his solos.
Rick...can't thank you enough for sharing your musical knowledge...love how you and Pierce...as well as Marty And Papa Stache have this fantastic camaraderie and appreciation of music...Loved the Carlton interview...I have picked up so much new information by catching your videos. Many blessings for you Rick...
I like that danalectro. this is a great lesson. interesting way to think of things. this is a trip . I remember my teacher showing me these types of ideas. it's such a great way to play rather than just following the progression. you get a much more interesting sound and possibilities. only thing that stumps me is where do these ideas come from yes they work great but like other things I want to know how to dissect the concept so I understand it completely maybe I just need to keep searching and it will come together like modes and chords did . this is awesome just let's me know that I've been barely scratching the surface. I'm going to be busy with this for a while. thanks Rick.
Gotta tell you....I had a lot more fun once I started building consecutive triads instead of repeating root 3rd 5th root 3rd 5th etc etc. Much more colorful with the extended chord tones...☺
A fun sound I’ve been messing with is playing the minor pentatonic off the 2 when a chord comes from a melodic minor key. So C-7b5 exists as the 6 chord in Eb Mel minor so you can use F-pent to play over that chord or any chord that comes from that key.
Guys, way back Frank Gambale has came out with a book called The Frank Gambale Technique book 1 and 2.I have it.Its all there.I am 63 and till today i use this book for reference.
I play guitar 12 years . Only progress is on my hands. 0 on brain - theory. I use all stuff i know by ear. Its time to learn the guitar now. Lets practice !!! Nice Video Rick ! Oh you have to know your counterpart lives in CentralGreece :D
Thank you for the interviews with Frank Gambale and Larry Carlton! It'd be great if you could get a hold of Carl Verheyen, another master in the same mold as the other two!
Frank Gambale is awesome, I got one of his books when I was young, although I wish I would have mastered alternate picking first... I had a heck of a time retraining myself to use primarily alternate picking and it wasn't easy, I still use the economy picking every now and then, but now I know when and how to use it properly. Love you brother! Domo Arigato Mr Beato!!! Happy Holidays!!!
Thanx for another great lesson. Seems to me that with all these numerous options there isnt much more left NOT to play... and sound good/interesting Came to the conclusion it all belongs to your ear and maybe ability to „feel good“ with certain sounds. As miles used to say: there are no wrong notes, only the wrong time to play them. At the end of the da , as you said, when creating all this tension you have to bring it back home at some point unless its just meandering around havin no goal nor target.
You are talking about Modes... simple... "IF" you truly understand them... and very few actually do:) The notes in the pentatonic are all contained in the Dorian and Aeolian modes... the singer determines which. People use pentatonic to avoid making note choice mistakes.
When you played the Cm7b5 chord at 24:12 and said what does it look like, I was totally expecting you to say an inversion of Ab9 and therefore you can solo on Ab7. Oh well... Really great stuff, presented in an relatable way. :)
Hey Brother Rick, Great video today, it was a nice continuation of the Larry Carlton discussion. Very informative! Thanks for taking time out of your Father's Day to spend with all of us! Lary
Agree. I've been wanting an EH Freeze pedal for awhile and this video just made up my mind. I went out to the local Music Swap Shop with some dusty pedals I once thought I needed and made a trade for the freeze. Such a great tool - and versatile for a single guitarist in live situations
If anyone is interested, but not wanting to buy a 1 trick pony- BossTera Echo has similar abilities but with a far more expansive repertoire of tonal opportunities as it is primarily a delay but with a latch function.
Hey Rick, thanks for this great lesson! some stuffs are confusing me a little, i’ll try to make it clear, please correct me if i’m wrong... On a major chord you can play major pentatonics based on the 1,4,5 because it gives you all the notes of the major scale... (same for minor by the way) In your exemple, you suggest to play major pentatonics based on 1,2,5 so it gives you A lydian which have same notes as E major so you can apply the 1,4,5 on the E scale and it gives you the 1,2,5 you suggest on A. I guess if you want to play on a A dominant chord you can choose more like a mixolydien sound so A mixolydien contains the same notes as D major, you apply the 1,4,5 to D and it gives you D,G,A so 1,4,7 in A... Am i correct?
hi Rick, that would be great if in future you talk about the fingerpicking, connection to rock history/ or not, or Chet Atkins etc there are lot of styles or subjects connected to it!
Rick did I hear you correctly to say that the useful (or applicable) major pentatonics are a minor third up? If so, are the useful minor pentatonics a major third up?
They are relative, so C major = A minor pentatonic, so you can play over them basically interchangeably A minor 7 = C major 6 as well, So minor scales are inversions of the major Scale, as well
Larry Carlton himself has a few courses on True Fire that are fantastic and you can access all of them with an All access pass for $ 19 a month. I have a few and are fantastic, with very musical examples of the concepts explained and backing tracks. there is a ton of value on this courses, this is the best way you can spend $ 19 in musica education that I know about
Rick, I super appreciate you, and also I often feel that you gloss over little steps in your lessons which are likely evident to an advanced player but their absence leaves me scratching my head. I don’t have the book yet, so probably that fills in the gaps. I’m 8 minutes in trying to understand how it is that the 2nd and the 3rd both can work with the major pentatonic scales and triads when these are characterized as being minor modes? As always, I jump in figuring these are master classes after all. Hopefully I someday access all the missing pieces. Those of you who have the book,… are things explained a bit more thoroughly there?
You need to be a tad more precise in how you're posing the question, but if I understand you correctly, one answer is (in A): The forms starting with A are obvious. E is a fifth up, which is an indicator of consonances, so it's not hard; F# and G# are both in A and the major pentatonic and triad are diatonic. The B triad and B major (keep maj/min straight) pentatonic use a sharpened fourth in A (D#), BUT...I'm far from an expert, but you can live with the 'virtual tritone', because: Tritones are not as dissonant as some claim; Just one chromaticism isn't a deal breaker; It's probably going to be a passing note, anyway, so... Just an educated guess.
Great lesson, Rick! Greetings from República Argentina. Always following your videos and it´s like a some classical place for me. Is there a posibility to visit in any moment your studio? Many thanks.Cheers!
I'm wondering about playing the B major pentatonic scale over an A major chord. B major contains a D# which is tritone to A major.. non-diatonic right? Are you going for a chromatic sound using the B major pentatonic over A major? Thanks :)
@ 5:42... is he playing arpeggios now? Did he start the lesson playing pentatonic scales over A Major (1, 5th, 2nd scale degrees) and then at 5:40 is he switching to playing arpeggios (triads) over the same chord instead of pentatonic? Just trying to follow. I'm a beginner here. thanks

I always learn more in the first minute of any of Rick's videos than from my previous 30 years of playing.
Haha. That's exactly what I was thinking.
The best thing about watching these videos over the years is watching you play
A very useful refresher/lesson, thanks
Happy father's Day.
Just a note: father's day is not the same on all countries...
Happy Father's day Rick !
Bit of a dumb thing to say unless he's your Dad.

Root 3 5 but then continue w 7 9 11 13…that’s the whole scale played in consecutive triads
This Dan Electro is an absolute surreal beauty. And she sounds amazing !

Thanks for the instruction- translates nicely to keyboards- absolute#1 instructional podcasts
Thank you for the interviews with Frank Gambale and Larry Carlton! It'd be great if you could get a hold of Carl Verheyen, another master in the same mold as the other two!
Guru Surya great player
Thank you very much for this deep journey into pentatonik sounds.
It's opening my head and makes me practicing even more.
Another good lesson. A lot of this stuff goes over my head, but I always learn at least two or three things from these.
So even though B is a minor scale degree in Amaj, you can play B maj pentatonic in A maj?
it's like an A lydian sound
would love to see an interview with Jimmy Herring if you get a chance! pretty sure he's based in Atlanta. Have a great Father's Day!

Thank you Rick, this is very helpful and I'll probably come back to it as a guide/refresher
Yeah PLINI !!
You're the BEST - I Love "Pastures" from Handmade Cities but everything on his last two records is fantastic !!
I LOVED this Hypes. I will be working on using pentatonics this way.
Thanks Hypes!

Happy Father's Day to all the Fathers! Bestest DADDADs ever!
Can take some little part of this and practice for weeks...what an inspiration!!!
Great stuff Rick. Hope you had a nice Father’s Day.
Hey Brother Rick, Great video today, it was a nice continuation of the Larry Carlton discussion. Very informative! Thanks for taking time out of your Father's Day to spend with all of us!

Thanks Lary!
The sustainor really helps nail the concept.

Can someone tell me which pages in the Beato Book these topics are covered? _Pentatonics and triads over chords._
Hey Rick,
thanks for this great lesson!

Lovely stuff there Rick. Twisting my head just with your instructional stuff.
Master! So thankful, the best for u and your family
I have Larrys hot licks vcr tape going over these same triad and scale concepts... fantastic stuff!!
Thx Rick and Happy Father's Day!
Rick, what sustainer pedal are you using? Great video
Electro-Harmonix Freeze
Keeping it real! Bringing it home!
You da man Rick! Super helpful and truly grateful for this explanation!! Happy Belated Fathers Day \m/
Aaahhhhh. Soothing summer riffs. Indian blanket a girl. Lol. Thank you Rick.
The book is on its way, i'm excited to check it out ! Thanks for the discount
Would you do a video on using the iv minor chord? never understood why that works.
Ken Hall I believe he has a video on modern iv chord substitutions
@@joethebar1 Thanks.
Happy Fathers Day!! Thanks for the sharing!!
Great lesson !!! More answers to questions I didn't know how to ask. Thanks again.
This is so Cool Rick ! I've been searching for more stuff like this(combinations) I have the book. But haven't uncovered there, yet! Thanks!!
hi Rick, that would be great if in future you talk about the fingerpicking, connection to rock history/ or not, or Chet Atkins etc there are lot of styles or subjects connected to it!
How did you make the chord ring indefinitely at 2:33? Is there a pedal for that? (I want to know because it sounds very cool!)
He says multiple times that he is using the EHX freeze pedal
A Danelectro with a lipstick pickup and it sounds like that ?! Wow...wonder what it would sound like with a PRS McCarty 594 SC. Great job; love it!
rick you show me so much more beautifull way ahead. thank you !
Thankyou Rick, so informative!!
Just bought your book after watching this, great stuff

Superb video. I wish I found it years ago.
This sounds so cool and fresh.
Awwwwww , Rick Beato knows EVERYTHING>.. wow... I wish we could do brain transplants ,,, but I better get a beato book..
Rick, I bought your book, but don’t see this stuff in there.......where is it?
Reminds me of Russ Freeman and Craig Chaquico. Nicely done!
Happy belated Farthers Day Rick for a grand dad to a dad
Happy father's day. You da man!
Major Inspiration, we salute you!
I love the Beato Book! Amazing lesson
Yup, fathers day in Alberta, Canada
Larry Carlton himself has a few courses on True Fire that are fantastic and you can access all of them with an All access pass for $ 19 a month. I have a few and are fantastic, with very musical examples of the concepts explained and backing tracks. there is a ton of value on this courses, this is the best way you can spend $ 19 in musica education that I know about
That was a very pleasant video. I'm going to show my ignorance, but I was hearing Holdsworth more than Larry at first.
I want the book so bad, I just don't know if I will be able to understand it. I have a hard time following your video's. but I keep coming back. LOL.
Thanks for this informative lesson. How can I play 1, 4 and 5 chords traids in the same position?
Really liked the LC interview.
Hello Mr. Beato,
could you make a video on LIFNEJ of the band "The Hirsch
Effekt"?!
Best regards, Carlo
I'm wondering about playing the B major pentatonic scale over an A major chord. B major contains a D# which is tritone to A major.. non-diatonic right? Are you going for a chromatic sound using the B major pentatonic over A major? Thanks :)
@ 5:42... is he playing arpeggios now? Did he start the lesson playing pentatonic scales over A Major (1, 5th, 2nd scale degrees) and then at 5:40 is he switching to playing arpeggios (triads) over the same chord instead of pentatonic? Just trying to follow. I'm a beginner here. thanks
rick what sustainer are you using??
Electro-Harmonix Freeze
Please more Linkin Park! 'Points of Authority'.
Great work as always. Thanking you.
Hello happy fathers day
Excellent lesson!
