  • Hope this video is of help to anyone in need of removing your crossover pipe for a 3.4L 5VZ-FE Toyota engine. I’m working on a ‘97 4Runner. I found very little info on how to remove these pipes. Most of the info I found was saying to remove transmission mounts and lower the rear. I did not try this method, so I can’t confirm if it works or not. I also found info that suggest removing intake manifold and exhaust manifolds and removing from the top, again, I didn’t try this method as I did not want to deal with more broken exhaust studs. The way I did this worked for me with what I had available in my tool arsenal. I suggest before starting this job, spray down your crossover pipe studs and nuts with rust penetrant. You can easily access the nuts through the fender wells. For those wondering how I got my broken studs out, I was unsuccessful trying to drill them out and didn’t have a torch available at home, so I used a cutoff wheel and cut perpendicular through the flange and all the way through the studs. This created room enough to knock the studs out one half at a time. I was able to repair the threads with a tap and install new studs.
    Good luck!

    Is there a gasket where the catalytic converter hooks up?

    Doing this repair right now and I have every nut out the crossover to manifolds except the top but on drivers side so I’m stuck how did you get it out or any tips?

      There’s not a lot of clearance. So, if you’re stuck, you may need to raise the tail end of the trans to pull the motor away from the firewall a little bit, get your crossover loose and then try again. The job isn’t for the faint of heart!

    Will that cross pipe ever get clogged? Mine is doing same thing but my cat that’s by trans is already eliminated starts fine just gutless when hit throttle sounds like a strange noise in the intake like it’s air not flowing good

    Thanks for making this video. It definitely answered a couple questions I had before I decided to dive into mine. Good job!

    My 3rd gen has 270k just did timing belt and waterpump. It's still pretty underpowered thinking about just cutting my cat and getting a weld in because I don't want to deal with the rusty bolts. Guess I should check my crossover too

    Change to a two pipe solution.

    How did you get the driver exhaust crossover top bolts off?

    • @lafedean
      @lafedean  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m trying to remember, but I’m pretty sure I went through the driver’s side wheel well though. There is a small plastic shield that can be removed and you’ll gain some access to it.

    Nice video man. Question for you, on my 2002 I’m not removing the crossover pipe but rather about to unbolt the front cat and tubing length from flange to flange and replace it, but I’m a bit hesitant and confused after reading about the E8 or E10 studs that attach the cat piping to the crossover. Should I have spares on hand? Can you reuse the nuts? Do I need to removed the studs and nuts, or can I just attempt to remove the nuts and replace those? I had everything laid out and was about to start removing bolts and I’m glad I looked it up one more time. Any help or tips would be appreciated. Thank you very much

      You can most definitely try to remove the nuts without replacing the studs, but beware, most likely you’ll have at least one of the studs break off. If that happens, your day just got a whole lot worse. I would recommend before attempting to remove the nuts, you clean the threads up as best you can, then heat them with a torch until they are glowing orange and try to zip them off with an impact. You will most likely need to use new nuts when installing your new parts. If your studs break, you will have a time trying to get them out, that was mostly the reason I pulled the crossover off. Hope this helps, and good luck!

      @@lafedean hey man thank you very much for your reply! I appreciate it a lot, I’ve been spraying them with PB over and over both hot and cold for the last three days but I didn’t think to try and clean the threads. Good call! I think this has turned into a next couple days job now that I realize how much of a pain those studs are. Thanks again, hope you’re having a good weekend

    So did you wiggle it out and down on the passenger side? I’ve gotta do the same and I was pretty set on actually pulling the trans.

      Yes. It was tough, but way less work than pulling the trans. It went back in easier than it did coming out. Good luck!
