    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Quigley (Tom Selleck) guns down three men during a duel, including Marston (Alan Rickman), with the help of a nearby native.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tom Selleck stars as American cowboy archetype Matthew Quigley in Simon Wincer's outback western Quigley Down Under. Answering an advertisement placed by Australian cattle baron Elliot Marston (Alan Rickman) to come to the rugged and uncivilized Australian countryside and shoot dingoes, Quigley finds himself halfway around the world, only to find that Marston wants to exploit his talents as a sharpshooter in order to wipe out the Aborigine population. Taken aback by this square-jawed genocide, Quigley grabs Marston and hurls him through a window. Marston, who controls the region, sets out to hunt Quigley down. But helping him stay one step ahead of Marston is the addlebrained expatriate American trollop Crazy Cora (Laura San Giacomo) who insists that Quigley is her husband Roy.

An old family friend of mine did all of the leather work for Mr. Selleck in this movie. Jerry Croft, of Croft's Saddlery in Deadwood, S.D. made the saddle, saddle bags, chaps, gloves and rifle scabbard. This wasn't the only movie he made things for Mr. Selleck in as Mr. Selleck was a frequent visitor to Jerry back in the day...

I like the scabbard. I have a similar scabbard for my 1874 Sharps, but it doesn't slide off as easily as this one did in the movie.

I don't care for the term "scabbard" in relation to the sleeve that Selleck used around the rifle. A scabbard is typically designed to carry a long gun on a saddle or ATV bracket. Leather saddle scabbards are typically made of stiff leather and designed to retain the long gun by its forward part, while leaving the buttstock exposed in order to provide rapid deployment. Just my opinion of the terminology.

I always liked the look on the servant's face at 1:45 when he glances at Marston. No hatred, no contempt, not even an expression of happiness that Marston was dead. Just a quiet acceptance, like things were finally made right again, and now he can rejoin his people and live in peace.

Between Marston, Hans, and Nottingham, Rickman was the quintessential bad guy for me growing up. There's something special about his death scene here with the slight grin after Quigley's reveal, like a "yeah, you got me there" moment, or his death by duel at the hands of a genuine American cowboy not being the worst way to go given his interest in that world.

It's the code of the West (or Western Australia). Minimally bad guys die instantly. Seriously bad guys die slowly enough for the hero to get in a few last words. “Said I never had much use for one. Never said I didn’t know how to use it”, being a good example.

Rickman so reminds me of Barnie Fife in this scene. "Confidant oblivion". My two favorite scenes are when Quigley throws Marsten out his dining room window--a visceral response to genocide. The other is when the British forces go to arrest Quigley toward the end, only to find hundreds of Aborigen's lining the surrounding hills. So well done!

Makes sense he never had much use for one. He was proficient enough with his rifle he could dispatch his foes log before they came within pistol range. Not to mention no self respecting 19th century cowboy doesn’t know how to use a pistol and marston, mr. Student of the American west, should have k own that.

I like how he doesn't give some speech when he wins. It was just two sentences. "I said I didn't have much use of one.I didn't say I didn't know how to use it." Someone said he would have made a good Indiana Jones. I think that is a good possibility, because Tom is a very good actor. Maybe if they had made one with alternate realities colliding or something similar, then we could see that.
