Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies shared a musical chemistry in Supertramp that created this beautiful balance that rivals the songwriting collaboration of Lennon/McCartney and Gilmour/Waters. That is what created their success and legacy. Not just Roger, and not just Rick. From a musical standpoint, Rick has a more interesting and unique approach with his songwriting. (for ex: Asylum, Another Mans Women, Crime Of The Century, Rudy and Waiting So Long). These songs are incredibly dynamic and Rogers contributions can’t be understated. From the guitar work on Crime Of The Century and Another Mans Women, to the secondary vocals on Asylum and Rudy. These songs on their own would not be same. Same goes with Hodgson; his poppy philosophical songs are fantastic and basic groundwork’s that Rick helped evolve with his bluesy vocals and piano. Not only that, but Doug, John and Bob helped create the ‘sound’ of Supertramp with their immense talent behind them. To say that one member on the band ‘is the band’ is ridiculous.
Supertramp will forever be an enormously under appreciated band. It’s such a shame Roger and Rick can’t just reform the band one last time before it’s too late. Rick’s cancer has subsided for now and Roger still hasn’t lost his voice. Put the ego aside, play a one off show in Paris and close the Supertramp story.

I have to agree with Roger in this interview. when he says that he thinks the time has passed for another collaboration with Rick. it would be something else to see such a thing. but the undeniable truth is so much time has passed. that a reunion would probably only amount to a hollow representation of the original Supertramp. and there comes a point where maybe it is better left as is. after all time go by by and things change. it's sort of same thing as why the classic rock genre is no more. but the music is still there for us to listen to. it's a shame but that's the way of it and something we have to accept.

I'll add to that. Dougie Thompson's baselines were journey's in and of themselves. I could listen to a whole album (and I listened to these albums a lot) and just follow the melodic line or the groove all the way through they were so interesting. They would never repeat themseves, and they would push all the songs forward. It may well have been Hodgeson's arangements, I dont know. But it's been a long time. Maybe the chemistry isn't there anymore; maybe they don;t all 'have Roger's drive to do the types of of rehearsals it would take to put together a whole Supertramp show, because they were pretty epic and complex. Supertramp isn't exactly music you can just jam on in improvisation. You need a pretty tight band to do this kind of music.
Why didn't you list 'Ain't Nobody But Me' ? Probably Rick's most unique track, especially for a single.

Roger was the hero of my youth. I heard his words over an over again and listend to the music of Supertramp with these great arrangements.
Without discounting your contribution, Roger, I think you had a congenial mix of talent in your band. After you left, Supertramp lost it´s success. But you did also. Nowadays you play the old songs again and people love it. It didn´t work that well with only your voice and the piano. It was better to try to bring back the old sound.
There will be no reunion. It would have been a great opportunity, but it is lost. Probably because of completely banal egoistic reasons. As so often. However, my son hears Supertramp borrowing my car. It is timeless music.
Look at this video ( th-cam.com/video/pGviK7VB4jM/w-d-xo.html ), an interview with Rick Davies, an aged man, who's years after his carcinosis apparently in a bad constitution. Very sad. But you will never again call for - or dream of a reunion! "Some things never change" - truly, but this dream - unfortunately - should be buried quickly.

Unfortunately Hodgson himself describes him as the mastermind. He started up with his paralysed attitudes after 1983 by ignoring the audience.
This designation would fit with Jeff lynne from ELO, but not with Roger Hodgson as the master mind of Supertramp. A lot good songs came from Rick Davies f.e. crime of the century, goodbye stranger, Rudy etc.
@@sagdieWahrheit Supertramp had a synergy that gave a group of young men a seeming wisdom beyond their years. Rick was eight years older than Roger. I just see this as a case of a rebellious young Roger feeling that he needed to leave older brother in order to grow up.
Anyone who isn't creating many versions of a song doesn't understand writing in general. Everything is trash which means one spends their time writing at the bottom of a garbage can.

No! Roger and Rick were a team just like Lennon-McCartney and Mick and Keith. That’s why neither he or the band never recaptured the magic and success.
Supertramp is not just one person. It was the blend of musicianship betweern Hodgson and Davis, but also the other 3 players, especially the fills from John Helliwell, which enriched a lot their sound. Few mainstream rock bands had a saxophonist, as a permanent player. Let’s not forget that Supertramp only started achieving commercial success after the other 3 members joined the band. So, it was not all a Hodgson and Davis thing.
In my opinion, Hodgson was a master at developing the structure or framework of new songs, like the sequence of chords, the orchestration and arrangements. And of course he had an unmatched high-pitched voice. However, even Hodgson songs have a lot of contributions from Davis, and vice-versa.
Would “School”, composed by Hodgson, be the same song without the harmonica solo by Davis in the beginning, and additionally the piano solo in the middle? Or without the sax and clarinet solo sections of Helliwell?
Hodgson’s songs’ skeleton was really good, but the virtuoso contributions of Rick Davis and Helliwell raised it to another level completely and provided the flesh. Hodgson was a great song developer, but he needed his mates to help with the tunes development in terms of technical musicianship’s complexity (piano and sax solos). Hodgson’s piano abilities were far from matching those of Davis’.
But this same reasoning also is valid for Davis. Let’s take the example of “Goodbye Stranger”, composed by Davis. Would it be the same song without the vocal interchange between him and Hodgson during the chorus? And without that crazy talented extended guitar solo at the end? Of course not. They complemented each other because no matter who composed the tune, he always let the other participate with instrumental relevant lines to the song. So, in the end, it sounded Supertramp.
They achieved greatness together, and they created magic when joining efforts. On their own, they are still good, but they lack that outstanding spark from the 70’s.
And even though Hodgson had most of the hits, it does not mean Rick’s songs were lower in quality. They were just less popular in terms of sales, but artistically speaking, they were equally great. Here’s a list of the most famous songs from each of them:

We can not really say one musician is better than the other. All those songs helped made their albums great, and, as Hodgson puts it, Supertramp wrote entire albums, because it “took listeners on a 40-minute journey”. That 40-minute journey would have not been completed without Rick’s tunes, and Hodgson for sure understands this.
Both were great, and that greatness grew exponentially when they collaborated. Wish they could have understood that, and would have stuck together. They already are an immortal band with just 14 years under their belt. But they could even had reached wider acclaim if they had not disbanded and kept putting out material for the past decades.
But, we still have the old albums to enjoy their greatness when there was no rivalries. So, let’s keep enjoying them! :-)

I love Roger Hodgson obviously but I think he miss the point : it's not only about him but about the audience, we will love to see and to hear SUPERTRAMP again, I mean with both Roger & Rick ! and the others guys too !
I personally still listen to 40 minutes of music, actually I have gone back to vinyl over any of the modern formats. There is something to be appreciated there.
I'm the same way maybe it's due to my age. coming from a time when the only formats where albums. unless a person wanted to listen to radio stations which I like many others did. but if I wanted to my favorite groups I would listen to the whole album. even if not all the songs were my favorites. it's also the same reason I don't like music services like Pandora. if I want to listen to a favorite group. I don't want to listen to a bunch of groups that are similar to them.

I still listen to full albums, one in particular “Famous Last Words”!!! Love every Supertramp album and, sorry Roger” FLW is one of them!!!!
Technically, Rick Davies is the founder of the band, as Roger Hodgson auditioned from a music publication, melody maker. Basically, like many bands, whoever sang the song also wrote it. I think both Davies and Hodgson were very talented musicians and the success they enjoyed was a result of a collaborative effort, not just one person. Davies should be honoring the agreement they made upon Hodgson's departure. I saw Supertramp perform in 1997 and I didn't hear any songs Hodgson produced. This doesn't mean he isn't doing it, I just didn't hear it on that particular concert. I know fans have long awaited a reunion. Unfortunately, this will never happen. There are too many long standing issues of which the public doesn't know about. Still, Supertramp was a great band, who produced excellent music and made an impact on the music industry.

Grateful to have been able to see Supertramp before Roger left. It was a remarkable evening of music and musicianship in 1983 that stays etched in my memory .

I never got the real deal about endorsing silly comparisons. Rick and Roger are both just awesome - in theis particular and specific way. They were together the huge creative strenght that made Supertramp what they still are, almost 50 years later. I love them both: Roger's life questions, philosophy leaking from his songs, important matters of the world; Rick's passionate piano solos, love songs. It was a match! No need to create a whole discussion about who's better. They are both Supertramp, ans Supertramp is better than any discussion!

Dasa Interview war etwas gegenüber Roger Hodgson geschleimt. Seine erste Soloplatte war nicht das erwartete Supertramp Album. Und Roger Hodgson als Mastermind von Supertramp zu bezeichnen ist gegenüber Rick Davies und den anderen Bandmitgliedern unfair. Sicher hat Hodgson die meisten guten Songs geschreiben und er hat die markantere Stimme. Aber einige gute Lieder kamen von Rick Davies. Und erst die Synthese beider bewirkte den markanten Supertramp Sound. Und getrennt hatten beide keinen großen Erfolg mehr.

I was always a Hodgson fan, just a great musician and songwriter. Saw him a couple years back in Williamsport PA doing a solo gig along with his longtime touring musician and he was very good. After hearing this interview, which I’m shocked I missed as its now six years old, I couldn’t believe the man’s ego with some of the things he said. Seems very bitter about things in a sort of passive aggressive way. You’re supposed to mellow out as you get older and it seems like Roger carries some serious grudges with him towards Davies and Supertramp. When you think about it, you never heard Davies really say anything about the breakup, took the high road on it. I’d love to hear his side on things. I always heard the break up was caused by Davies’ wife being the manager on his insistence. Who knows? What a waste though, they were 10x more prolific when they were together and it’s a damn shame there weren’t more songs and albums done after 1983 by the same five guys that made it so great. They could come up with all the excuses they want, the bottom line is they should’ve put the damn egos aside and stayed together.
Just for your info after 1979 all band memberts had a seperated managers, Rick's manager was his wife but Roger 's manager was his wife , Karuna . Margerson was the manager of John , Bob and Dougie. So it was not only a story about Sue because there was Karuna too. Furthemore it is not a secret ( and more than rumour ) that Roger wanted to change the music direction drastically and he wanted to fire the band members but Rick refused it. It is also very important part of the story but it seems Roger did not want to mention it , and the rest of the band did not want to open this story again .

Every so often two very talented people meet and create something in which the whole is even greater than the sum of the two parts...Lennon and M'Cartney is the obvious example where each spurs the other to a higher level. This happened with Rick and Roger, their styles were completely different yet they complimented each other so beautifully. Neither has or ever will achieve the heights alone that they achieved together.
Love this man and his music. Roger was a joy to meet in person and to talk to. I will always remember it, as it happened in Edmonton - during K-days. I enjoyed his antique (white with amazing designs) Grandma organ he brought over from England, to enjoy playing with among so many other awesome instruments he played, like the electric drums. Thank you Roger for touching my heart and soul. It is now 2018 June and this is the first time I am seeing these interviews and I love the awareness in self you are expressing - I'm going through this now myself. Its amazing, eh?

Gänsehaut, Goosebumps. My first Supertramp concert was the Famous Last Words tour - in Munich 1983. Epic! I was a young teen back then, I will never forget my very fast concert. I went to see Supertramp in 1985 with the "Brother Where you Bound" tour in Munich as well. I have to admit, I really liked that album. My next encounter was at the Beacon Theater in NYC in 2003 or so - Supertramp, with Mark Hard attempting to take on Roger's parts. Nice try. But "Sooner or Later" is pretty good.
Then I went to 2 Roger Hodgson Concerts in 2017 and 2018 believe. In Tarrytown, NY and some place in NJ - on my birthday. I was amazed to see that there teenagers singing along with the songs - just like me 40 years earlier. I haven’t managed seeing Rick perform since the epic Beacon theater performance, and I just missed his “Ricky and the Rockets” evening in the Hamptons last summer - which would have been an 1.5h drive from my house. I hope I will catch him next time. But seeing Roger on stage has more goosebump potential for me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can see & hear that. It's almost embarrassing to hear him speak. If you look through some older interviews from the eighties after he left the band, it's all there as well. I think he must have been very hard to work with. A genius for certain, but the "spiritual" ones often enough wind up being the biggest ego-trippers.

Did he say he left Supertramp and gave Rick the name? Rick founded the band. And it's complete BS that Roger's songs "have stood the test of time" better than Rick's.
If I compare the "total" (words, music, interpretation), I would "save" Rick, not Roger!

It seems ungrateful Roger has already forgotten that Rick posted an ad in Melody Maker in order to look for guitarist. Roger answered this . Rick received the money from an Dutch millionaire in order the found a band. For me Rick's songs are equally good as Roger"s and I prefer Rick's songs after 1983 than Roger's.

I think Roger was a little disrespectful to Rick and dismissive of his contribution to Supertramp. Why are his songs "the real sound of Supertramp" but in his words "Rick has the name but it's not the real Supertramp" . The simple fact is that their contribution to the song catalogue was roughly 50/50 and as Rick sang all his own penned songs that means he was 50% of the sound. He also states his songs "have stood the test of time better than Rick's......well that's his opinion, it's certainly not mine. Added to that he infers Eye of the Storm was superior to Brother where your Bound...again not in my opinion

Seperated from Supertramp to do something new but all he does is play Supertramp songs. There for they should have never seperated. But thats just my opinion as a fan. Its theyr life. For me, seperation killed everything for all of them. Together they were amazing. But at the End, thank you for all the great Songs.

Ansonsten stelle ich es mir ziemlich anstrengend vor, als Künstler immerfort nur auf Supertramp reduziert zu werden. Roger Hodgson hat so unendlich viele (andere) Facetten - wie man im Englischen so schön sagt: he's an artist in his own right. Ich liebe seine Solo-Alben und seine neuen Songs, die es leider nur sporadisch im Konzert zu hören gibt.
So, und nun gönne ich mir den Luxus einer 52-minütigen Reise, mit Rogers Album "Open The Door" aus dem Jahre 2000... maybe that's totally old-school but on second thoughts: there's a huge vinyl revival going on right now - so maybe the desire for those well-arranged listening experiences/journeys that last an hour is more alive than ever. Long live Roger, Vinyl and the Musical Journey! :o)

In The ‘Eye of The Storm’ did pretty well. ‘Had a Dream’ made top ten in many countries. ‘In Jeopardy’ was number 2 in UK.

It was not even in Top100 in US and there is no any data about the rank position in UK. Pls send me a link , I"m curious . Roger's songs stand the test of time, one of my best memories of 1977 is seeing them at SPAC in Saratoga NY, BUT THERE WAS JUST SOMETHING ABOUT THE TWO GREAT KEYBOARDISTS SEEMINGLY RIFFING OFF ONE ANOTHER... EVEN IF HE DID WRITE IT ALL.

I saw them many times in Toronto mostly within the first ten rows... Davies seemed very much like the leader of the band in each of those concerts. Hodgson provided the high pitched sining he was famous for, so the two of them together with the ban performed deep textures of rock, blues and pop. Hodgson was the pop... I think he gained a false sense of entitlement with the success and recognition, failing to capture the same level of success the day he left the band, you can sense an ownership of that same level of entitlement some 40 years later. Some people just grow beyond the need of being a part of a team, band, gaggle... whatever. As long as Roger is happy I’m cool with it... people evolve even after making bad decisions early in life. I’m just not convinced he’s ever going to be happy after seeing this interview.

For the love of all that is holy, can we just get a proper SUPERTRAMP reunion?! Set aside the feelings while you guys are still here and wow us once more! Supertramp is Rodger AND Rick. Both unique songwriters that created something special together. So many generations have been born but never can see the magic that was! A proper Supertramp reunion show would SELL OUT.
Too late now, mistakes have to be realized and rectified sooner.

Crime of the Century blew me away from start to finish. Crisis? What Crisis was as good if not better, the albums that followed did not quite have the magic but the music was still a big influence for me. I could feel the magic was waning when Famous Last Words came out, but It's Raining Again was pure top drawer Supertramp, As was Rick's 'Bonny'. Still love the album, love the band that was, love Rick (he is from my home town) love Roger, all that has happened is just how it should be. Despite wanting a reunion I respect and accept the fact that it ain't gonna happen. I am grateful to have been alive throughout the Supertramp years. I can't tell you how glad I am that it happened.

@@francescostrangis9703 Well I can't really tell you as it is impossible for me to choose a Supertramp album over another. They all have strengths and weaknesses, however if it helps you gauge how much I love Crisis? What Crisis? I can tell you that I am on my third vinyl copy having played the other two til I wore out the grooves.

There is no need to condescend to an ardent feminist like me by telling me to relax. Yesterday I finally found, bought and played Supertramp's last album "Slow Motion." I quite liked it. Sure the thought occurred to me that Roger's voice would fit well with the other factors. But he is not a voice machine that exists just to suit fans. Its just a shame that groups break up with great duo song writers, Roger Rick, Lennon McCartney. When they write together its magic, egos get in the way.

Probably I'm one of the few, who like more the spirit and the voice of Rick in Supertramp. And so it comes to pass, that "Brother where you bound" was the better album for me compared to "Eye in the storm". In these times ...
And I never understood, why Rick felt it was necessary to re-cast Roger's voice "at the same pitch".
Anyway: These two albums were the last I bought - and they'll be the last. Maybe I'm too romantic for this world ...

I think of Roger as the Paul McCartney of Supertramp. With that being said, imagine that Paul decided to leave in 1969, and John, George and Ringo decided to replace him. Imagine trying to replace Paul McCartney, and still have this band called The Beatles. I think that Paul would say the same things that Roger did. They can't help the fact that they were instrumental to the success of their respective bands
Very well said, Pink Floyd is an example where they did go on without one of the writers, another Roger who was maybe the Lennon of Floyd, and the end result was lacking, not that the members are lacking as Hodgson tells us here, but that the magic, or more truthfully, the gift from God, is about the group of individuals, who, for some reason unknown to mankind, transcend time and space only if they are all present as one unit.
Imagine Beatles without Lennon .. or George ....

I mean i love Roger Hodgson solo works as much as i love the works of his with Supertramp, but, let's consider he played bass guitar at debut album and second album, when he played bass at that time. He was just a great band member great composer, he was'nt arragont like that once that time. Then he discover his talent, his unique talent that doesnt match with Supertramp harmony, once he realised that, he want to leave, but he knew that only way of leaving was that being an essential part of Supertramp and being recognised by people, then he had a fanbase, and here u go u had the exit. Dont comeback Roger u're better where u're. Bless u.
And Roger it's not just ur songs. The band made a huge enstrumantal work on it. It's not just urs. And that's why u cant deal with Rick Davies, he's the genuis of music, not fancy songwriting, he doesnt like too much fancy lyrics. You're the one that popular songwritter, people love ur words much much more than Rick's , but the thing is music is just not about lyrics. Put that in ur head, i dont believe that u really mean it, u just stage ur act. +Atilla Ayılgan he didn't say anything about it being about "Lyrics". Pumping more fuel into the fire about that S-Tramp lineup as compared to the post RH lineup doesn't matter any more. Fans want to see a reunion...but in a Business Sense...there is no logic to it from either side. Neither wants to put differences aside to give the FANS what they want...so we're left with the Albums from that time-frame...no big deal...put a set of Headphones on and enjoy the music they produced.

What if Supertramp were inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a reunion would be something special and that original five band members would play some of those classic songs!

Da gibt es noch andere Hausnummern, die auch ohne ihre Bands fähig für eine Solo-Karriere waren ( Beispiele: Phil Collins, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, John Lennon). Und "Supertramp" war eine Band, die einzeln betrachtet nicht funktionierte. Hodgson geht nicht ohne Davis. "Queen" nicht ohne Freddy Mercury. Die "Bee Gees" nicht ohne die verstorbenen Brüder. So einfach ist das. Die Arroganz von Hodgson kotzt mich an.
@@prokastinatore Absolut unpassend und unfair von Rockantenne Hodgson als Mastermind von Supertramp zu bezeichnen. (Geschleime) Das passt vielleicht bei Jeff Lynne bei ELO aber bei Supertramp war Rick Davies fast genauso wichtig wie Hodgson, dazu auch der Klasse Saxophonist Helliwell und ein guter Bassist und ein Drummer. Und das erste Soloalbum von Hodgson als das erwartete Supertramp Album zu bezeichnen war auch völlig daneben. Es ist ganz nett, aber niemals Supertramp. Und beide Seiten haben durch die Trennung stark verloren.

Great interview! After listening to Roger's words here I reassert in something i've said many times before, and it is that Supertramp needs Roger, but Roger doesn't need Supertramp at all. And I hope one day he find the time to release a new album with all those gems I'm sure he has. Last week I attend his two Spanish shows and I can't wait to see him again next month. His shows are so special, You never know what's going to happen, there's always a gap for a surprise.

You obviously never saw Supertramp before Roger left, Rogers show is good, Supertramp with Roger was pure magic. It is a fine line, but an extremely important line.

Interesting how he says that he wrote his Supertramp songs by himself without, essentially, any input from the rest of the band, but yet he says there will be no Supertramp reunion until Rick and he "can come together." Come together how? You admit the rest of the band wasn't involved with you during the heyday of the band. Why do you need that now?
