Correct call. Players may not: -touch the ball while it is in or on the basket, or in the cylinder Or -touch the basket while the ball is in or on the basket Or -move the ring such that it contacts the ball while in motion. Note that there’s no prohibition on touching the basket while the ball is in the cylinder. The player touched the ring with the ball in the cylinder, but released it before the ball entered the basket, and did not move the ring. By rule this is not basket interference.
Basket interference "A violation called while a player (a) touches the ball or any part of the basket while the ball is within the imaginary cylinder that exists above the rim, (b) touches the ball while reaching up through the rim from below, or (c ) hangs on or yanks down the rim or the net while the ball is being shot. When the violation is called on a defensive player, the shooter is awarded the field goal. When the violation is called on an offensive player, the field goal is disallowed."
Seems the key here is “yanks or hangs”. On the surface, seems real obvious, but it does allow for subjective calling Does “yank” mean it has to be forceful? Or bend the rim? Does “hang on” mean beyond simply touching the rim or grazing it? If you grab it at all? Does your body weight need to be supported in some way? In one sense, these seems like the right call. On the other, perhaps an amendment where you aren’t allowed to grab the rim at all in that situation would be good. I could easily see had the cards been reshuffled for the other end, they would have erred on the side of caution saying it affected the ball in some way. Thoughts?
