      Anneke as solo singer is very popy and softer than when she performs with someone else. She is great in Arjen's projects (like Ayreon) and with Devin Townsend. But her band Vuur is nice tho.

Floor is beautiful, but also a giantess and because of it, unusual-looking. In addition, Nightwish's guitarist is quite short, which makes her look even bigger.

      100% agree. Also, I don't think anybody would judge a MALE singer in base of how many styles he would be able to sing, there are so many who just growl or scream, and they are just good at that, and nobody complains.
      I don't see why a woman is necessarily required to sing in a clean voice to figure "good enough".

    • @BjornV1994
      @BjornV1994 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aleaiactaest_music Depends on the singer, for me, what give someone like Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation) an edge over most other grindcore vocalists, is his ability to have a deep-as-the-grave grunt voice for most of a track, while also have cleaner, higher and somewhat more screechier vocal style, which does creates a lot of variety in a track and prevents monotony in the music: "Manufactured Extinct" from the "The Antropocene Extinction" album showcases this greatly. So I do like it when a male vocalist also have some range to his voice and can do different styles. But it is true that people judge female vocalists quicker on this regard, at least when they sing with a death growl (I don't think anyone will how Simone Simmons deep voice sounds...)...

    Unleash the Archers is absolutely worth a deep dive. There most recent 2 albums (Awakening, which is the title track you hear at number 6 in this video) and Abyss have a single story that runs through both albums. Abyss has really helped get me through the last 2 years. It is definitely an album that can and should be appreciated as one single work of art, with the only albums I would consider the same way being Linkin Park's "Meteora" and Allan Parson's Project' "Eye in the Sky". 3:38 You really need to listen to Unleash the Archers to understand that Awakening is just about in the middle of Brittany Slayes (her stage name) vocal range. She's gone as deep as a C3 in chest voice, and can belt as high as an G6 in head voice (Tonight We Ride). Now, as to the bass technique, Nikko Whitworth (the bassist for the Apex album) uses a combination hammer thumb and finger pluck style. The best way to think about it is that he's modified a banjo playing technique, not so much tremolo, so that his thumb strikes are on every count, and he has a three finger pluck to do the quarters, so that every bar in 4/4 time he has 16 played notes. Since the thumb strikes are on the count, it leads to a very natural gallop that matches the double-kick of the drums, so it just works....

No doubt about that. I say this, being a big Floor and AE fan. But the best female growler is that French demoness Marion. Period. Female Lorna shore. Just my 2 cents on this. First I think this list is pretty much matches what I would have given (so I feel validated). Second, Alyssa - and this needs to be mentioned even more - can sing clean and is capable of doing so quite well (not Floor good, but who is?), her current band just does feature that side of her unfortunately. Third Floor can and does growl and she is a beast at it like she is with everything regarding vocals, she really is the total packages, but her in an opera she can rule it, put her in deathcore band she slay it. Fourth, there is a relative young female vocalist from Switzerland called Melissa Bonny (in Ad Infinitum, Darkside of the Moon and has collaberated quite bit with Feuerschwanz) that shows a lot of promise not yet Floors clean voice, but already amazingingly good and has a vocal overdrive pedal (meaning she growls in league with Alyssa, nobody growls in league with Tati, male or female :P=), she could have been mentioned here (but than again young european artist, that people don't know that much yet)

    Some fantastic choices here. Floor sounds incredible. Alissa White-Gluz sounds great too. I enjoy that contrast some of the people on this list have between clean singing and growls/grunts. My current favorite metal vocalist is Su-Metal from Babymetal. Lots of range, harder and softer where she needs to be. She’s pretty expressive. I wonder if she’d ever do death growls on a future Babymetal record. The first time I heard “Distortion”, I wasn’t sure if some of the vocals were even Su because she sings some pretty low notes that I wasn’t used to hearing her sing. Fun facts: Alissa White-Gluz sings on “Distortion” as well. And, Christopher Amott played guitars on the “nemesis” version of “Ijime, Dame, Zettai” years earlier. It’s a different take on the song from what what’s on the album.

Of course everyone's list is going to have some variations, and that's great, I always love discovering new voices to swoon over! My own list would include these and also add (no real order, they're all great in their own ways):
    - Anneke Van Geirsbergen (The Gathering, Devin Townsend Project, Ayreon, Star One, The Gentle Storm, VUUR, et al); one of the OGs (Original Goddesses) of Dutch female metal singers, can go from poppy to metal to trance to folk and has such a warm and entrancing timbre... there's a reason she does guest vocals for so many bands from Amorphis to Devin Townsend to Ayreon to Napalm Death and others.
    - Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion, Ayreon, MaYan); so fundamentally sound and adaptable, she can complement any other singer and yet still can be the lead effortlessly.
    - Dominique Persi (Stolen Babies, Devin Townsend) Cleans, Screams, and, um...Yodelling?? And she plays accorddian. SICK. th-cam.com/video/1bYlM__Irog/w-d-xo.html

    Floor Jansen is the #1, but Tarja still holds the special place on my heart, and I prefer her on most older Nightwish songs. Your list is great, but I would like to add Noora Louhimo from Battle Beast, and their old singer Nitte Valo who had even more "raw raspiness" in her voice. Then Netta Laurenne from Smackbound deserves to be mentioned too. Netta also features the absolutely best Finnish musicians like Teemu Mäntysaari from Wintersun.

      @@ResistanceOfficially For Nightwish music it's tie for me, because you don't need that much metal singer for their music (especially when Marko was with them), but for metal in general, definitely Floor.

    Tatiana's cleans are great as a feature on Twelve Foot Ninja's Over and Out.
