  • In this video, I am working on the third of five locomotives that are in various conditions. Repairing and painting the shell, cleaning the motor, replacing split and cracked wheels.

Super. I have six almost fifty year old MU-2 drive Mantua/Tyco locomotives still in operation on my layout, all bought new, which is about 10% of my current locomotive fleet. (EMD GP-20 w/Lionel dynamic brake blister on top, EMD F-7A, Brill Trolley, Plymouth MDT switcher, and two Plymouth CR-4 centercab switchers.) They run great and see constant operation both inside and outside, and have a nice patina on the paint job that makes them look very realistic, and MU with my more modern locomotives quite well. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

Hello! I have a couple of these with cracked plastic wheels.. Can you describe how to remove and install new plastic wheels, and do I need an engine specific wheel rather than a regular rolling stock wheel/

Hi Ted, On my locomotive, the truck side frames were not attached so I twisted the cracked plastic wheel off the axle. Then I was able to replace the wheel with a good one. Twisting it back on. I used an ho scale NMRA gauge tool to properly align the wheels. You probably could use a rolling stock wheel if the wheel is same diameter and can fit on the locomotive axle.

@@SnakeRiverJunction-en3dy Thank you so much for your advice! I enjoy the challenge of fixing trains in my old age now that I am limited physically. Do you have a method of taking the truck sides off of one engine to use on another without breaking the tabs off the truck side like the engine in your video? Thanks!

I tend to use a small slotted screwdriver and carefully pry the side frames off. Doesn’t always work without cracking the tabs off. When you deal with old plastic, tends to break off no matter what you do. Haven’t found an easier way to do it. Little CA glue and it’s back on.

How did you get the weight out. I tried removing mine, and the weight broke in half.

I used a small screwdriver and carefully gave it a little force. The weight popped out. Sounds like yours might’ve had a zinc rot issue
