  • General Grabber red letter Tire Review. 3 years in the 79 series and my 2nd tyre review. Again I've chosen another good type of tyre. The Generals Grabbers are considered to be an All terrain but I'd say they are a cross between mud and all terrain.

The KO2s are arguably the most popular off-road tire (in the States) and it would benefit a wide audience to get your review. Thanks mate!

Ronny, I work for the largest tire retailer in the US, and your review was spot on! Before Xmas I took the Red's off my 80 as I drive it frequently from the Phoenix area to my home in Flagstaff, AZ that gets a fair amount of snow (supposed to be about 20" this weekend). While I've been impressed with them in the desert and the Moab area of Utah, they are sucktackular (is that a word) in snow and ice. I knew that though, and Continental did not design them for that obviously. They are a Baja racing tire. I put KO2's on in their place and now they are sitting in my garage. Debating on getting a second set of rims, just to use them in the summer time. And yeah, in mud, they do hit a 'critical' point where, maybe due to the pattern, you just go sideways. LOTS of unsprung weight, I think they are just shy of 100lbs. each. I have that exact same size. Wow, how much $$$ were those things down there? I know anytime we try and get stuff from Australia we really have to bend over and take it you know where! I did just get a new Ram Power Wagon, and man, talk about fun and really capable off-road. Think Rubicon with a Warn 12k winch and a 6.4 HEMI. (maybe you already know about 'em) Big sucker though!

      Two questions Ronny :
      1. I notice you don't have rim-locks or whatever they're called on your truck, why?
      2. I was trying to find info on what exactly rim-locks are but haven't been able to find any info online. Know where I can find it?
      Thanks a lot!

Hey man I live in Flagstaff, Arizona. There's about a foot of snow on the ground melting at this time. I'm on the fence on Ko2's or Gen Grabbers AT2s so many decisions to make.

    • @donleamon8653
      @donleamon8653 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Paul, those are called bead lock rims. Essentially you are clamping the tire bead to the rim, so when you run lower pressures off-road, the tire will not come un-beaded so to speak from the rim of the wheel. I've never had an issue not having them. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beadlock

+Tyler, either are a good choice. Michelin vs. Continental. Both good mfgs. I've not tried the AT2s yet. The Power Wagon came with Goodyear Duratracs. First Goodyear product I've ever had in 34 years of driving. We'll see. Coming up to Flag this weekend. Course, everything is closed to off roading, unless you have a suggestion... All my old places to go when I grew up there are shut this time of year it seems. F'n Forest Service. One place off Lake Mary road that is still open, and a bit hairy, will take you all the way up to I-40. They haven't gated it yet. At least on the LM side. We've got a store on either side of town! “If ever you’re not satisfied with one of our tires, please feel free to bring it back.” ;-)

I switched from a Goodyear Duratrac which were fairly good, to a BFG K02 and wow! Sand/snow absolutely incredible. Much better on road manners, extremely quiet. I have been thoroughly impressed by the BFG K02s in load rating E . Vehicle is a Toyota 4Runner with the 2uzfe. Keep up the good videos! Love channel and look forward to new content!

I've got a set of the General Grabbers A/T2 sitting in the shed waiting to go on out Prado once the Federal Couragia M/T's finally wear out... They've been a good tyre but they are very noisy as well

a tire you may want to look into is the goodyear wrangler duratracs. they are also an "in between" tire. similar to the bfg all terrains in the center with big knobby super swamper style outer lugs that clean well in the mud. ive had a lot of luck with them

I run the Grabbers and Ronny is spot on. Unfortunately, they are not a MT and are not great in the snow. I just had them sipped yesterday and ran them in the snow and it made a huge improvement. Also, not the greatest rock tire but not horrible. Moving onto Maxxis Creepy Crawlers next month. Thanks for the review!

I've put around 40,000k on a set of 5 GT Radial Komodo M/T 33X10.5R15 tyres under a 5cyl diesel L/C shorty, Most of it on the highway (yeah I know I probably should have bought A/T but I had dreams I tell you :P). I still have around 60-65% left on them. I think they are fantastic, only downside is they are so aggressive I end up with an old diesel shovel on the beach, (but that's nothing that a snail wouldn't fix) I can imagine in the mud of Brunswick they would romp it in. Plus to add to it the 5 brand new were (what I think) quite a reasonable price, paid 1350 through tyrerite and i am very happy with them

I run the same tires and while your setup is heaver than mine, the road noise issue you speak of is due to your pressures being too high. Try 10 psi less than you are using now.
With a 5000lb setup, I am running about 27-28 PSI and they are much quieter than when the tire shop set them at 35 PSI. My 2 cents...
    Thanks for your review.

I think you would be a perfect fit for the Toyo Open Country R/T, it's a newer mixed offroad tire like the generals. You seem like you want to keep a bit of street manners but need open voids for mud as well. I like their M/T as well if you wanted to go more aggressive. I personally like the E rated tires because they wear like iron.

I know this video is old but I am thinking about getting these exact tires/size in 17”. Price is not a limiting factor and now you have wheeled here in the states(watched your Moab trip. Epic by the way). Do you think I should go for these or BF Goodrich MT’s. These would go on my secondary truck(‘15 Tacoma DBL TRD OR F/R Locked King 2.5?remote reservoir F/R OME leafs 3” lift expo Built with RTT and all) I use it when we take family Overland trips through Baja/Central/South America. Most of our trip is HW until we get close to final destination points so this is my appeal of this tire. Then mild trails OR to primitive camp sites in fair to great weather. I had these tires on my 4runner and loved them m, but it is a much lighter build as it is a 1988 4runner(Essentially late model Toyota Surf) F/R Locked too. However the Tacoma is much heavier load out weight so I am cautious after seeing the truck slide 90 in mud. I have wheeled in my 4runner in wet/muddy grounds conditions and never experienced that. Planning to take a family trip using the Tacoma through Big Bear Pass/Omigene. It gets wet/rains unexpectedly up there and inquiring for your opinion of the sure footed nature of these tires on an expo loaded truck. In short, do you think they slide more than any other tire during a decent? Apologies for the long comment. Excellent video!

Goodyear Duratracs might be worth checking out if you still haven't decided on a replacement. I had them on my truck back in Canada as well as on many company trucks and was very impressed with them and they seem to last forever. They're another "hybrid" style of tyre, but where the SRLs are more of a heavy AT, these are like a light MT or aggressive AT. See them on plenty of larger F-250 and 350s so the 79 should be a walk in the park for them.

I hear good things about BFG's new KM3 coming out. 3 ply sidewall tire thats essentially a cross between the durability of a KO2 and the performance of a KM2. Other than that, I would run a Cooper STT Pro MT.

Don't know if you have ran Mickey Thompsons before, but you should try either the Baja ATZ's or the Baja MTZ's. I have personally ran both and loved them. I personally prefer the ATZ's more for a daily driver because they do last a little longer on the pavement but still have decent traction for the trails and run a little quieter at the same time. If I had more money though I would go with the MTZ's for the better traction off-road.

What about trying something different. I have Falken Wildpeak Atw3's on my 80 series. I really like them. They are 100 times better than the old wildpeak. They are a hybrid between a MT and an AT. I have about 8-9k miles on them with no visibility wear.

Give the TOYO MT’s a go or the Nitto mud grapplers I run them both all over the US going up mtns to servic cellular sites and out of every tire these two have been the best

Ever run the cooper ST Maxx?
They work great here with mud and rocky trails.
No clue how they are on sand though as not many dunes or beaches to drive on around here.

x2. Great tire. Currently running them on my 80 series. Would love to see these added to his rig. Maybe the STT Pro's as well if hes looking to switch to a mud terrain.

I've run them too and I am not a fan of Coopers at all (I hate the ST and STT), but the ST-Maxx changed my mind. They are a brilliant tyre

    hey ronny,
your review is very good on these tires!
i would like to see some videos of off-road handeling with maxxis 980 all terrain. maybe you can consider to change your current tires with those. the only experience i have with them are on tarmac where they're good but also noisy.
    thanks

I've had very good luck with my BFG KO2's. I feel it's worth mentioning that my rig is less than 1800kgs fully loaded however and I'm not sure if they make a version that can take the weight you are carrying.

Good review Ronny, it helped me confirm my suspected feeling about those tyres. I'm sure the have a very good sand use being I believe they create the red letter grabbers for Baja racing.
I was wondering about the Toyo Open Country AT2/ProComp AT sport, virtually the same tire. They are 10 ply, 7 & 3, as well and have deep treads with good channels for cleaning. I have had 25,000 miles on my 4x4 standard Tacoma and they have performed quite well for me so far. I would be quite interested to see what you have to say about them.

Ronny, I would like to see you run the bfg KO2 on your cruiser. I've been extremely impressed with them on trails and in the mud. Plus, they are just as quiet as all seasons. I know they aren't the most interesting to feature, and the brand has been around for ages, but I think your review in comparison to the ones you have already run would be beneficial for most making the decision to buy. For the type of off-roading that you (and many others do) my $ is on the BFG. Cheers

I've had decent luck so far with the Dick Cepek Extreme Country MT, they're a pretty high preforming tire for as economical as they are.

Hey Ronny. Thanks for the great adventures and reviews. I have run BFG K02s on my Jeeps years. I think it would be great to get your opinion, from the real world, about how the K02s compare. It's one thing to hear from Baja racing and something totally more practical in a real world study.

I just got a set of BFGoodrich KO2 on my Toyota Tundra and so far they are great in snow and daily driving on poorly cleaned streets of a Canadian city LOL, they do very well on a snowy and semi icy trails but as expected fall short on steep icy hills (need to use chains). Have yet to test them in muddy conditions but being an AT tires I don't expect anything superior performance wise as they are an AT tires after all.
    P.S.
Why get rid of the canopy as they are called here it seemed very functional.

I take it you lost the fight with that lawn mower then Ronn?....Anyway, I use the MT Sahara and have to say they are epic in the soft stuff with pretty good road manners too. I only use it about 30% of the time off road so I'm changing to AT. Could you recommend an AT tyre 'with good road manners'?... Cheers
Also, any chance of an episode with a Land Rover 101 or something similar?

I have Cooper Discoverer RTX on my 96 GMC Jimmy, they are labeled as M+S (mud & snow). They are pretty quiet on road and with my limited experience they seem to handle mild mud (1" or 2") although i don't know if there good for airing down or the rocks
