Thank you. I thought that wood looked a bit soft. You would probably have been able to stabilize it with resin before use but that's a lot of work. Jim Bell (Australia)
I know that this is an old video but here goes anyway. I’m building quite a few knives a month lately and while I don’t have access to that particular type of Birch, I can use a spalted Maple that is almost identical. As you have mentioned the softness of the “Spalted” material and I have noticed it as well. I am intending to try out a product called “Cactus Juice” that actually hardens softer wood. I would like to purchase some of that fancy birch but the price from the supplier I use is outrageous. So my Maple will be almost a direct replacement. Well you might want to try that Cactus Juice on some of the softer stuff so that it can be made to be useful for a knife handle.
Thanks for showing us your wonderful job! I have made two myself. A grandfather’s knife with a redwood burl handle and a 3.5” blade puukko with a medrona handle. Medrona is a Pacific Northwest hardwood. Both blades were made by Kellam. I use the small puukko exclusively for carving. 🔪🎸
Kiitos videosta tulin kattomaan, miten saa tuon toisen lestin siihen pienelle veitelle en oikein osaa tehä tuppija kun yhelle kerrallaan! Pitää kokeilla noin niinkun näytit.
'Wonderful deuce! That spalted birch burl is beautiful. Yes, that soft spot can happen with that spalted wood, which is basically perfectly timed degrading wood. Sorry you had to redo, but the results are spectacular. I had a friend who crafted ink pens from turned wood. He called that type of wood "splatted" wood!😂I am now inspired to make a side-by-side knife deuce, more in the American frontier tradition. 'Hope to be free to try that soon. Thanks again, brother. May the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
I did just that. I used a old hickory butcher and paring knives. Turned out great. And real cheap. Got both blades as 2nds, I think it was around 22 bucks.
Hi I have just watched a couple more of your clips. Your knives are a thing of beauty and you are such a talented man. I know I have asked previously but if you have one for sale or a pair like these two beautiful knives and would consider selling them to me please let me know. Keep up the good work love watching your films.
Perfect wood & leather work but forging wise I think the bevels looks like the ones I make(Im 3 knifes old😅). I sure the are tempered to perfecttion, looks doesn't mater much unless the steel does what it's supposed to do RIGHT?
The handles and leather work are outstanding if you could please would love the contact details for the Finnish black smith who provided you with the knife blanks
Wicked awesome build man but you should get wood stabilized especially soft wood like spalted birch, and use blades that have a radius in the tang-blade transition instead of 90 degree corners as it could make a weak spot. Its a little more filing to get it to fit with no gaps but it makes a stronger overall construction.
Theres really no need to stabilize the wood thats most finnish knives. They also are fairly resilient to enviroment if you just add some kinda oil or something occasionally, but i have never had any kinda issues personally. I just do pretty much same thing with unstabalized wooden handle on knife like any wood handle on different tools
Next time try some cactus juice on the spalted wood... it's a stabilizing resin that you just soak the wood in for a bit, wrap it in foil, and bake it in the oven.
You don't need a vacuum chamber, I mean, it helps but it's not vital, any old bowl will do, just weight down the wood... a lot of woodturners I watch here seem to swear by it.@@kiehicraft
The description says the blades are from finnish smith called Jaaranen. They still available buying online last i checked, one place is if you google kivipekat i think links dont work well so i cant directly link also maybe brisa sells them
Good work on the handle et sheath but the blades aren't as good quality. The bevels aren't very clean, they look like they've been made with an angle grinder without any proper finish. Also, I think there is a crack on the edge of the bigger blade near the ricasso. It's small but it may cause the knife to break or the edge to chip during use.
Hi! Thanks! Yes blades looks rough, but I like that. That makes every blade more unique. I checked the leuku blade and there truly is a crack! I haven't noticed it before. You are such a hawk eye 👀 I need to be careful when using the leuku
@@kiehicraft if the crack isn't too deep maybe you can use a round file or a diamond burr on a dremel to carve a sharpening choil over the crack, maybe it'll remove it and prevent it from spreading ?
Where else could a video full of learning be so enjoyable? Thanks for posting.
Thank you! I appreciate
True Art. Thank you for sharing.
amazing worksmanship. The handles are exquisite. Growing up I owned many puukko knives, but none came close to yours. kiitos

i made a handle for mine from an old bone handled corkscrew some leather spacers and some rosewood from a table leg.
The handles and leather work are outstanding if you could please would love the contact details for the Finnish black smith who provided you with the knife blanks
Consider stabilizing the spalted birch?? I know it wil be more like plastic, but it lasts better 🙂
It sure will, i agree with you. I will definitely try stabilizing if I own vacuum chamber some day
Great video! I advise everyone to watch it!!!

This is how the soumi puukko is Made traditionaly. With an addition of epoxi glue. Sufficient enough 😊

@@mulepowerforge I guess it has its benefits i just meant it isnt really all that necessary imho

Where can these be purchased?
Very nice looking handles. What did you dip them in? It looked a little like linseed oil.
Thanks! The oil I use is called Finishing Oil
superb how to
Great Looking knives! And I have to ask what’s that drill you use called

Consider stabilizing the wood in a pressure pot with expoxy
Cheers! That method would be great for spalted wood, but I don't have pressure pot

Thanks! I've made knives to order. I currently have none for sale.

Do you sell any knives?
Technically speaking only one of those is a leuku but they both look good
Who made the knives?????
The description says the blades are from finnish smith called Jaaranen. They still available buying online last i checked, one place is if you google kivipekat i think links dont work well so i cant directly link also maybe brisa sells them
Answer can be found in the description
Absolutely beautiful! I'm sad that the beautiful wood used for the sheath was covered with leather because it had great grain.
Cheers! I used birch plywood for the sheath so that was not grain pattern, but it looked nice though :)

It is 180 mm
Consider mixing your lin-seed oil with vegetable turpentine, that will make the oil draw better (and faster) into the wood
Thanks for the tip!
This is a twin knife, right? It looks so beautiful 😉😉
Thank you! Yes, two knives in one sheath. Larger is Leuku knife and smaller is puukko knife
The blade is not on par with the beautiful handle and sheath.
Well, it depends on who you ask 😆
I’d say you’re full of shit lol
There’s better ways of machining the metal pieces
No doubt :D
love the wood? what is it? spalted curly birch?
Spalted birch
Great job!!
Cheers!
