The ceremony is done to keep the soul free from the cycle of Lives & Death - MOKSHA - Salvation ! The soul actually gets another body after death ! It’s a belief that River Ganga dip will free that persons soul. City is Approx 4500 years oldest living City & the last city before actual destruction of Earth ! This city is taken care by Lord Shiva itself. Just saw your blog accidentally.. I studied in Cardiff & lived in Cardiff London for 3 years ! Good you explored 👍

@@JackAynsleyTravel Well, India is very varied but the most beautiful part is Northern India, the upper Himalayan region. Some places to check out for are Kalpa, kinnaur, Chitkul, Sangla, Sarahan etc.. These places are alpine, nice cool temperature through out the year. It has 360 degree snow clad mountain, alpine jungle, brooks etc.. It snows heavily in winter there. But I strictly suggest you not to venture there now since its full monsoon, the view of snow clad peaks not guaranteed and there will be frequent land slides there. Best time to visit is Oct Nov during falls.. The entire Northern region becomes fairy tale landscape. You can see why Britishers had their summer capital in that area. In monsoon it is safer to visit places like Varanasi.. You can go to Southern parts of India like Kerala, Munner... It is amazingly green out there now..

In Hindu and Jain culture death is very auspicious. It is not considered as something bad it is considered as pure. As you have already seen people burning up the body because fire ( one out of five element and fire is considered as exquisite element because it can give life and take life ) removes all the bad feelings and bad things from the body.

About the urinals, I travelled to few countries in Europe and the metro station public urinals, the pub urinals are extremely dirty. I mean I couldnt even step into them, it was so bad! I saw this in Germany, Austria and even Switzerland.

In other places when you go to the river banks for funeral ceremony and after you come back from the ceremony, you can't enter home without bathing. So we take a bath outside our homes and then enter the home. It has religious significance and its considered impure if you entered the home without taking a bath after the funeral ceremony. But Varanasi is considered so pure that, in Varanasi these rituals do not matter. You could enter your homes right after the funeral without taking a bath.

This public cremations are deliberate. Its for people who takes material world so seriously that they forget life is limited, everything will turn into ashes one day. so its a message that dont be too attached to anything, anyone. just help people, be happy, make others happy and live your life happily as its limited. dont waste it in useless fights, arguments, getting depressed over material stuff. if you remember that one day you will turn into ashes, you wont waste time in fighting or hurting others.

Varanasi holds a special place in my heart, profoundly shaping my views on life and death. Its spiritual energy, especially around the ghats, reminds me that death is not an end but a new beginning, an inevitable part of our existence. Realizing that we arrive in this world with nothing and leave with nothing has deeply influenced my perspective, emphasizing the importance of goodness while we're alive.

Just some info for our foreign friends - if you see a hindu body carried away by friends and relatives, we say "Ram naam Satya hai"(Lord Rama's name is the ultimate truth and that's what we have left when we die). We also say Om Shanti Shanti similar to R.I.P. And usually we take bath immediately after coming from funeral. And someone who has actively participated in funeral pyres, take bath outside before entering the house. After death, there's ceremony of mourning for 13, 10 or 4 days depending upon faith of various groups, followed by feast to local communities. And in some parts, when a person of age usually above 75 dies, that person is given a farewell ceremony with full procession of bands, drums and musicians.

You have witness the death coveted by millions in this amazing country. Dying and cremated in Varanasi is considered extremely auspicious for anyone and is thought to be the result of good karmas in this life. Because Shiva in the form of Mahakaal himself helps the soul to cross over during death rituals in Varanasi.

*Shiva is considered very mysterious and is the reason for creation and time, now shiva is all about moksha inspires you be free of all your material possession and see the truth that nothing is permanent and change is the only constant. Shiva is associated with death and cremation and he wears ashes of the dead on his body and meditate on the cremation ground, all this represents that our real truth is we are not this body and we will die but through meditation and getting over our attachment we can attain moksha and cremation ground are the best place to learn about non permanence of life..*

I would book a food street tour, check online plenty of options and check reviews they would guide you to the best places, best way to avoid food poisoning is to avoid the tap water, only boiled or bottled water, usually busy places are fine. For Delhi if not too late l would avoid staying in Paharganj or Old Delhi. Stay in South Delhi areas like Hauz Khaz or Jorbagh/Sundar Nagar/Golf links, lots of areas in Delhi which are pleasant areas to stay but staying in the very hectic areas does ruin your experience
