Hi Jason, great to see you have rebooted your channel recently with lots of content. Even though this is an older video on your channel its very enlightening. It would be great if you could do a video on all the common sweeteners and their effect on insulin and by how much each one elevates insulin. Your book clearly explains that pretty much all? sweetners raise insulin by a large degree. I am not a diabetic and im in great shape. I have found that certain sweetners do not interrupt my ketone level at all and so im able to occasionally enjoy my self with friends without interrupting my state of ketosis. This is preferable to having sugars and then having to wait 2-3 days and being hungry to get back into ketosis. I feel like this concept is always skipped over, and there might actually be a positive (if used appropriately) to the vilified sweetner. All the best, Steve
Food is some kind of trap of pleasure more than necessary. If running around all day I stayed skinny on raw fruit back in the early 90's. I ate all I wanted and the insulin worked somehow. Turns out you can't eat sugar with anything else or it clogs up the works. Either a meat meal or a sugar meal but never close together. The vegan fight was raging on. People wanted sustainable energy and body builder's wanted muscles. Body builders won because of sustainable energy and ability to work and look good. Fruit eaters were weak. All the while Hollywood was living on adrenochrome and that sustains them for over a month per fix. Later they got into the vampire issue from the underworlds all hidden from most surface dwellers except elite who wanted to win all the battles and wars always knew the secret of predator prey. Getting rid of predators including financial and sexual predators seems to be a weight loss key. They stress people out.
Jason Fung can i still do Intermittent fasting even if im thin...? im thinking if i dont have any fat stored to burn.. i want to do IF daily in my lifetime
Yes you can and you will always have fat stored to burn, unless you are way underweight, then the only thing you burn is going to be muscle mass and you'll eventually die at a young age. Don't go that route. By the way: Eating healthy is important even if you're slim, as there are a lot of diabetics around that don't have a big belly to tell them from non diabetic people apart, so keep clean of highly refined foods and sugar(fruits are fine).
5 years later and they are still helping Jason. I'm fascinated by the information here and am currently starting to change my lifestyle because of these videos.
After being under medical care for diabetes for 6 years, I'm now free of diabetes by being on intermittent fast. My A1C is now 5.2 and I stop using all medicines. Thank you dr Fung. I hope your contribution to global health is recognized with Nobel prize for medicine.
@@mausambi613 one 24 hour fast and one 96 hour fast. I continued to fast for 48-96 hours for the rest of the month and lost 35lbs. I got rid of my hypertension and diabetes. When I ate I tried to eat good foods (ei: salmon and greens) but some meals I had pizza and beer.
Jason's unique advantage over other weight loss "guru's" is that he makes sense. Worth the investment of your time to understand the aetiology of obesity.
And the things he promotes actually work! Some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data: The hunger hormone ghrelin lowers over time with extended fasting and rise from dieting Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system. Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic. Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque. Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods. Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy! Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus. Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility especially in women with PCOS. It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue th-cam.com/video/giEDadzoErs/w-d-xo.html Does the body prefernetially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, it never uses mainly glucose for fuel and using glucose for fuel is very biochemically damaging! th-cam.com/video/Nf1jwMbvNxw/w-d-xo.html The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! Is fasting just the same as caloric restriction? No! Dieting increases the hunger hormone ghrelin while fasting decreases it and has many other health benefits! th-cam.com/video/sVl-nilhWLc/w-d-xo.html When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state. It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses. Does fasting burn muscle? In most cases no! th-cam.com/video/teQIaU6wp2o/w-d-xo.html Fasting can make you gain muscle faster: th-cam.com/video/5RM8GRzsIIg/w-d-xo.html Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more. It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention! Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! th-cam.com/video/BeC_gIR2Z14/w-d-xo.html Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections. After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system. When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging. Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting. Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow. What breaks a fast? th-cam.com/video/7aRLsCpxy3o/w-d-xo.html Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period. Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it and builds muscle! th-cam.com/video/fJUDucBWv4s/w-d-xo.html Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks. Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level. Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice. I am GP and have been searching a long time for the answers to Diabetes and Obesity and in Jason very clear presentation and other videos I am convinced he found the answer to so much suffering, and unnecessary cost, to individuals and our governments. Well Done, looking forward to implementing your approach in my Maori Medical Practice in New Zealand where the need for this is exploding.
This is 9 years old. I had signs of NAFLD and insulin resistance then, try no doctor ever said anything about fructose. My family doctor did suggest limiting "the whites". That led to a lot of my own investigating. About 2.5 years ago I started to learn about fructose. Eliminating it as much as possible has really helped my health!
Dr Fung, I have ready everything you've written and you have changed my life! I've been vegan, fat and then skinny, but always gained it back. This has been a struggle for me all my life. I decided to fast for 14 days and read all your materials while doing it, and lost over 20 pounds! But the more amazing thing? I have kept it off! It is all thanks to you. You really have cracked the obesity code and I cannot thank you enough for changing (and possibly saving) my life.
This man is a genius. Sorting out all the junk science is nauseating. Someone who can actually explain the connections between insulin and obesity is seriously refreshing perspective. Thank Dr. Fung for taking the time to explain the mechanics behind the phenomena of obesity and all the health issues attached to it.
So this was 9 years ago l see on the date. I have just found this videos two days ago. So I’m 9 years this man’s has changed the lives of all of us that this has occurred to. THANK UOU FOR BEING A REAL CARING HUMANITARIAN MEDICAL DOCTOR DR. FUNG!!! You have changed the world!!! The other’s allowed these things to just slide. They saw the results but looked the other way.,
Man, the bypass surgery example is amazing. It’s basically validating the fasting process even among doctors that might say that fasting is crazy or non effective.
I wholeheartedly agree. This man deserves significant accolades from the scientific community. He has literally saved countless lives with his work and research in the last 10 years.
I am enjoying my weight loss adventure, IF is so cool! learning so much & feel so good!!! code has been broken, eating my stored fat for breakfast & lunch every day! Thank you!
No words can explain how great you deliver your messages to people who really need your help. You should serve as an aye opener for healthcare provider that sees patient for money and for drug companies.
@@YTSuxAxx It's true he has his books, but his audience is around the globe. If you can access it, it doesn't mean everybody can. And caption will help non English speaker understand him better.
I was eating fruits on first half of the day on advise of Dr Biswaroop Roy Choudhury for T2 diabetes management until recently when it stopped working. It's been almost a month that I started following Dr Jason's low carb idea & my average sugar level are hovering around 100 mg dl. Interesting science so nicely explained by this genius..
bro dr biswaroop diet diet didnot work for you ? many people reversed their diabetes as well dr brc diet ? what was your idea to move ? what diet you are following now ? please share your detail diet also ..thanks...
Thanks for this great video series! Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Robert Lustig are both trying to save the human race, especially the Americans, still diabetes doesn't seem to let go of most people, even though you see more and more people realizing that sugar is the main culprit.
I love watching your presentations. They are very interesting. And a lot of people in educational or informational videos sometimes aren't, either the voices or their demeanor....but I find you to be very easy to watch....Very real and honest.
I started doing this the first of this month. I have lost 3 lbs so far. I've been counting calories and exercising and wasn't really losing much at all. I cannot fast a whole day because I need to take medicine morning and night. But I am spacing my meals 12 hours every other day and it's working. I was drinking oj every morning and eating many small meals a day and wondering why I wasn't losing weight even though my calorie count was down and I was exercising. Thanks a lot for this video!
Indeed. The stomach shrinks without being forced with food every day. It is a miracle that people do not succumb to the clear excess of food intake in modern rich societies.
This episode was game changing and a huge eye opener. Thank you for the way you explain this material. I have a scientific background but I believe any person who doesn't have the background would understand this concept with the way you explain it. I look forward to the next 2 lectures.
March of this year my A1C was 17.5. I found out while spending a night in the E.R. The Dietitian told me that Type is not curable. The first day out of the E.R. I went OMAD. I tossed that fuckin insulin in the trash. I had a doctor's visit for the first time in my life in June. My A1C was 6.5. I am now doing two meals a day very low carbs, 30 grams or least. I believe in about 4 more months, I will have a normal A1C level. Get this, my doctor stated that what I am doing can cure my Diabetes type 2. He is woke as fuck. If your doctor tells you type 2 can not be reversed, get rid of he or she.
i wish more people knew about him..trying to tell my family about him... i do IF for 24hrs to 48hrs every week for 2months now.. i loved it.. loss weight and feel great...i did mostly b/c psoriasis and arthritis.. it works ! and when i eat bad i feel it.! so i eat mostly fat now..i can't waite to read his book i just order it..thank you for videos Dr. Fung
Such an incredible work ,saving lives. I wish all the population globally could listen to your lectures you have changed my life in a spectacular way.My sincere gratitude goes to you whilst awaiting you to receive a noble prize 🙏
Yes! Weight loss surgery, for me, was like cutting off an alcoholic's legs so he can't walk to the liquor store. It is a drastic measure that doesn't solve the underlying problem. I wish I would have understood this before my surgery 20 years ago.
This is a man who has changed my life-and saved it! And I must be only one of many thousands who have benefitted from his dedication to healing through GENUINE SCIENCE! 👍 Now and then I see STUPID recommendations that “ so-and- so “ deserves the Nobel Prize For Medicine. Sometimes I laugh; sometimes I sneer. But when someone says that about Dr Fung, I cheer and say, “YES, NO ONE IS MORE DESERVING! “ ❤️
Yes. When I talked about I only eat one meal a day. Ppl said I was crazy. I told them the fasting has completely changed my diet. I don’t craving for food when I am not hungry. I used to shake and not able to think well when I was hungry. When I start intermittent fasting and keto diet. I don’t shake when I am hungry. The first two weeks were hard because I felt hungry all the time. Now, I can just go through 24 hours very easily. I lost 15 lbs in 2.5 weeks. I felt much better. I can walk up the hills and not feeling the heart is over beating. I much more free time to do other things since I only eat once a day. More important, I don’t buy junk food when i go shopping. My kids don’t snacks as often. They watch out their carbohydrate intake. I only see benefits with fasting and you can do it anytime and anywhere. You can always stop and come back. It is your control and it is free.
The more I watch videos about IF, the ketogenic diet, the metabolic theory of cancer, autophagy, etc., the more convinced I am that most doctors are clueless. Sure, they have years and years of specialized training, but many of them seem to lack the ability to integrate that specialized training with anything else--like understanding the fundamental, underlying processes of how the body's metabolism actually works. They're trained to treat the symptoms of a greater, underlying problem as individual "diseases", and they are actually hostile to anyone who suggests otherwise. Thank God for doctors like Dr. Fung, who can cut through all of the B.S. I have been able to cure my high blood pressure issues; a condition my doctor said I would always have. It's ridiculous to learn just how useless and hopelessly stolid many doctors really are; in the end, many are just glorified pill-pushers, and nothing more.
They don't know anything about health, they only know about sickness and keeping you alive when awfully ill. If you want to be healthy you have to figure it out yourself.
@@LTPottenger you nailed it! Most people don't or aren't able to get to a doctor before the wheels fall off. Health is our responsibility. Not every Dr is proactive like Dr. Fung. He is a specialist teaching health like a humanitarian but he's the exception.
Very good explanation of how the body increases energy and ramps up adrenaline when you fast so that you can go out and slay a woolly mammoth or rabbit. This makes sense. If you just reduce your calorie intake day after day your body will reduce your metabolic rate to conserve your dwindling resources. Thanks Jason.
I am medical graduate became diabetic 5 years back.. But had no concept of what to do. I was taking Metformin and lately a Dr suggested sglt2. I took for 1 month but became more dehydrated and lethargic. Now following low carb high fat diet.2.5 kg reduced in 45 days.
Hello Dr Fung, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I have learned so much and due to the fasting way have now lost 7 stone. the last 4 only took me two years because I began the 5:2 way. Watching you convinced me to try longer fasts and I am doing so well on that. This is life changeing stuff. thank you.
Thank you Dr. Fung. I went from an A1C of 12.2 January 27th to an A1C of 5.5 Sept 30th. January I was a size 12/14 in January Sept 30th I'm size 4/6. I've never used medication since finding out I was diabetic.
I love this man!!! This protocol has changed my life alongside a ketogenic diet. He describes everything so clearly. I wish I had known about this a long time ago! My obesity was such a huge issue my whole life until now. I finally solved the puzzle. It was the only thing I couldn’t fix and I always saw it as a character flaw within myself. It turns out it wasn’t my fault at all, I was just given the wrong advice from professionals that should have known better!!! When I say this has changed my life, I really mean it! I know with confidence that I will never be overweight again!! I could never say that before.
I’m onboard with the idea that wheat and bread could be possibly addictive. I LOVE breads in a way that I don’t get from any other food. I don’t like sweets really, and don’t miss them, but I can’t fathom a world without good breads, and they are my favorite part of any meal.
I agree with Dr. Fung. The hard part is to actually do what he says. I was a Type 2 Diabetic until I survived Covid. After that I became dependent on Insulin to just live. I believe in the hormonal theory of obesity because hormones can drive behavior that is like someone pointing a gun at you and commanding you to eat the cream-filled donut. I have to take testosterone for the past 28 years and when I take a large dose my sexual drive can become compelling. Fortunately I’ve not done anything abnormal but I’ve learned that insulin can almost “force me to eat”!! Thanks Dr. Fung for all your work.
Alejandro Avila Yes if you do it along with a proper diet. Also, you gotta lower your consumption of carbs and sugars up to 20-40 grams in order to reverse it. Thus, you need to be consistent.
In the discussion about wheat stalk height vs berry size approx 30:00, another factor involved in the culture surrounding it was roofing material. 100+ years ago, wheat served 2 purposes in Western societies. It was food, and it was also a great source of straw for roof thatching. As other materials started to replace straw in roofing, the need for a longer stalk also diminished. Off-topic for this video, but some people might find it interesting.
Thank you so much for this and all your other great videos !! They help me so much . I‘ve just received your book „the complete guide to fasting“ and I love it . I‘ve tried several longer fasts but my blood sugar always goes really low ( 50mg ) by day 3-4 so I have to break my fast . Is there anything I can do against it ? Thank you so much !!!
Dr Fung is trying to give a presentation. Some of the audience is very rude interrupting him. Especially when he has to repeat information they didn't previously pay attention to. He's very patient.
This is so true that “if you eat more sugar foods, it makes you addicted to more and more.” You never feel full and therefore you have to constantly open the refrigerator 8 times a day for snacks and open your dry pantry for more sweet snacks as cookies and breads. That makes you eat 10 times a day. Slowly, you get fatigues and pains here and there. When you see your doctor for a short 3 mins. All he or she did was give you a prescription and next thing is suddenly you are in medication and medications. Remember, most doctors have to go with our government’s policy, government has to go with big business whoever the big guys who make the chemicals oils as so called vegetables oil and toxic chemicals as sugars. Sugar has no explanation date. Dr. Thank you Dr. Fung for telling the truth and educating us that money can’t be exchanged for.
I grow turkeys commercially. If we want to increase the carcass fat of the turkeys, we all know that we increase the energy of their diet. A really successful method is to reduce dietary protein and add rolled oats or similar rolled grains to the diet
Thank you for this excellent information, Dr Fung. I have found your TH-cam videos to be invaluable. I am looking forward to the book on fasting that you are writing with Jimmy Moore!
You're a genius Dr Fung !! Have a good 20kgs to lose so contemplating a 10 day fast. Have done some 2 and 3 days ones, and think it will just get easier as I go longer ... Within a month of starting Keto I was off my high blood pressure meds !! hahaaaha my doctor was so impressed with me !
Interesting how you can have more impact on reducing blood pressure by decreasing dietary sugars than by reducing salt. Yet, the mainstream message continues to be that excess salt in the diet causes high blood pressure. Where does that come from?
there's some easy to digest """science""" behind it (salt tends to absorb water, which could make your blood thicker thus harder to pump) similar to the reason why fat often gets the blame for heart disease.
Thank you for these wonderful videos, Dr Fung. I was also diagnosed with Type II diabetes in my 20s and I was always perplexed about how some people don't gain weight even though they eat a lot and vice versa (I gain weight easily). I also tried to lose weight with different diets but always tend to gain back after losing weight. Your explanations solved all those mysteries. Your teaching is very easy to follow and well structured. I would like to know if you prefer alternate day fasting over, say, 16-20 hour fasting for weight loss for Type II diabetics. For me, it is easier to skip breakfast and feel like I can do 16-20 hour fasting long term.
Regarding wheat - since I gave up ( stoneground whole-wheat ) I am finally losing my carb ( cereal ) belly . Despite being very sporting I have had a beer belly most of my adult life ( despite being a non drinker for long periods ). Of course this was really a carb belly generally and wheat Belly in particular . Also within a week of giving up bread for Lent my chronic sinusitis / nasal congestion miraculously cleared up . In addition some small patches of psoriasis that developed at a time of extreme stress , seem to be slowly disappearing . Wheat is not good for humans or the environment but my county of Kent 🇬🇧 is covered with this subsidised crop .
Also I'm hearing that insulin sensitivity returns with fasting but weight doesn't go down. He says that with gastric bypass weight goes down but NOT BMR. Why? So how does one lose the body fat? How does one use fasting to lose weight, improve insulin sensitivity, and NOT reduce their BMR?
You mainly burn fat through your basal metabolism ie your kidneys, heart, brain etc. which run 90% on fat contrary to what most say. Your muscles run almost entirely on sugar which is why burning calories through exercise is simply useless. If your insulin goes down eventually your weight will but it takes a long time. If you do longer fasts say eating every other day, then on the days you don't eat you are burning almost pure fat.
I've lost over 30 lbs of fat (while putting on muscle) on a low carb paleo diet. Been slow losing the last bit around the stomach due to what I thought was loose adherence but in hindsight (after watching your video) it was most likely due to a habit I gained in the past year: a "mini-snack" of 2-4 pieces of dark chocolate/nuts just after getting to work. This must have affected my insulin sensitivity due to breaking my fast earlier. I was noticeably hungrier by lunch time and even for dinner after a big low carb lunch. This was very apparent in my blood screening last year which showed elevated insulin levels and triglycerides. I recently switched back to an 18-24 hour fast with 4-8 hour eating window based on your video. Getting used to fasting again and am no longer ravenously hungry, just a mild controlled hunger. Thanks for the video!
as I watch this video what I contemplate is how much physical weight I have to release: (75.2 Lbs to be precisely exact!) for the sake of my health and for my well-being. the thing is though... I realize that I desperately also hold on to all the excess weight: for safety and for comfort. dear God, please please please, help the weight dissolve off of me, and please help me to no longer have the need to hold on to any of it, for the illusion of safety and protection. I am ready to be permanently, forever released from these shackles...
The change in wheat also affected thatchers. You can’t thatch a roof with modern wheat. If you study food history, what the good doctor is advocating is basically the Norse (Viking) diet of ancient grains, vegetables, lean organically grown everything, wild meats and actual whole grains flatbread. Honey was a rare and loved treat. Sugar was simply not a thing.
Hi Dr. FungI been a type 2 diabetic for 4 yearsand I watch your videos and I am a strong believer that your program can help me to live a longer life for my kids and myself I need your help please help me I need to reverse this curse. please tell me what I need to do.
Eric Phillips his videos tell you. Cut down on carbs especially unrefined or sweet. That will start to bring your insulin resistance down and reduce the need for medications. My husband was diagnosed with type II. His numbers improved with this and taking multi-minerals, including chromium plus cinnamon
T. Colin Campbell in his book “The China Study”, mainly talked about the dangers of animal protein causing diseases. His dietary recommendations are found on one page. His diet consists of less than 3% meat. I wouldn’t be surprised if he mentioned wheat but that surely was not his major observation.
I am CKD patient that started for 8 months before. I have a high blood pressure problem as well. My bp was all good I had quit blood pressure pill for last month everything was ok but suddenly yesterday I took a glass of ( lassi) yogurt , water and sugar in it four spoon sugar. My blood pressure spiked and despite of taking pill it didn't come back for next 16 yours
Dr. Fung's videos are excellent and informative. He is so straightforward and thorough in his explanations. Who knew that the disease isn't diabetes but insulin resistance - that skinny people metabolize differently than those of us with insulin resistance and that we treat the fat in our body differently as well. Unfortunately, Dr. Fung doesn't appear to answer questions on his videos. I've viewed several now and I haven't seen any answers. There is very probably a good reason and that is the liability that doctors can face if they give medical advice without actually testing and seeing the patient and knowing their personal physical issues through the bloodwork, vitals and other evaluations. Very understandable.
sooo i love this video.... i love this to death.... a bit long winded but yea.... not my task in life is convincing my 60 year old grandmother who has type 2 diabetes to try fasting
Insulin resistance is diabetes. Fasting sounds great it doesn't change the metabolic rate A calorie deficient diet causes 50% loss of muscle and bone and 50 % fat however when the regain occurs which happens with this type of diet all of the regain weight will be fat. Fasting helps with insulin sensitivity and no loss of muscle and bone. Eat a little bit less doesn't work. Timing of meals is important. All good points Jason many thanks. .
Can it be proven that food companies are aware of the fact that SSB sugar sweetened beverages make you eat more of the food you drink it to?If they know this and exploits this then they should be held accountable and pay the bill for ALL the health issues we see now.Any whistle blowers from the food industry here ???
Plantains are very high in sugar (2 of them will give you 60 grams of sugar) and not that high in fiber (2 will give you only 8 grams of fiber), but are unrefined. So are they ok to eat?
You are correct. I would be careful about eating excessive amounts of plantain. Nevertheless, you can always see the effect of plantains on your own blood sugars to see if they are a problem.
Dear Dr. Fung, While I cannot argue with the data related to the fasting benefits, I am still puzzled: Shouldn't diet restriction mimicks gastric surgery more? A stomach the size of walnut should not be able to take normal amount of food for any given day.
At around 59:40 mark you point out in the Heilbronn 2005 alternate day fasting study that the RMR doesn't change. It is 6675kJ at baseline and 6292kJ at day 21. According to the study, the average FM loss at day 21 is 0.8kg and FFM loss at day 21 is 0.6kg. Based on those changes, you'd expect to see about 50kJ/day reduction in RMR (0.8 * 19kJ + 0.6 * 54kJ), while the reported reduction is 383kJ (or ~5% of baseline RMR). This seems to be on the same scale as the slowdowns reported in the Leibel reduced calorie studies. Based on that, how can you conclude the alternate day fasting isn't causing a slowdown in metabolism? The 19kJ and 54kJ numbers are from www.bodyrecomposition.com/research-review/dissecting-the-energy-needs-of-the-body-research-review.html
There is a more environmental challenge with wheat in particular and the Green Revolution in general . Even Norman Borlaug (the father of the Green Revolution ) said that the intensive agricultural farming that was at the centre of the Green Revolution is very detrimental to the environment . It trashes the quality of the top soil . He said over 50 years ago that the Green Revolution was only sustainable for about 30 years before the negative effects on the environment would become apparent . At that time the human population was about 2.5 billion . It's now over 7 billion and heading towards 11 billion .
Hi Dr. Fung, I am 41yr old and type 2 diabetic , was wondering if there is any danger in my blood glucose falling too low when fasting or exercising? Also do you have a video defining a fasting program? Could you please send me a link to the video, thanks for all the information you have truly enlightened me .
If you are taking medication or insulin, then yes. You may find more information on our website regarding fasting at www.intensivedietarymanagement.com
My main question is should I be fasting 8pm-12 noon daily or do an intermittent fast one day in one day off if a lot of the studies show in favor of intermittent type? I've done 3 wks daily already and like the results! A bit hungry in morning/evening still but it's easier than the calorie restriction and heavy exercise I used to always do to cut down.
Maybe I am missing something. I understand the fasting concepts, but I can't figure out what foods we are supposed to eat. Protein from animals increases your insulin, pasta and all carbs increase your insulin so what are we supposed to be eating? Nuts and vegetables only? Genuinely confused.
Beth Molinari... Half ur plate should b greens with organic extra virgin olive oil dressing n other two qawater mix with eggs, meat, fish cooked in butter or saturated fat n also add nuts n seeds.... Take care
I am a 64 year old women. Day 3 of my fast I was very tired. On day 4 I was still very tired and now nauseous. I had to get up at 3am and eat to stop the nausea. I still believe in it and I will try again. Just wondering if studies have been done on women my age? Is there a difference in outcomes for different age populations?
Did you started fasting slowly? Your body needs to adjust to fasting . It can take up to 6 to 8 weeks to adjust to fasting. Jason explains that well on his videos.
All the medical advice I've heard is that Seniors should not fast. Sadly they are usually tho ones fighting obesity. Just as well, the times I've tried it I felt like I was starving.

All the best,
Steve
Thank you sir! You are saving lives and changing hopes!

I'm glad the videos are helping. Please see the website in the description for more information.
Thank you for sharing the way you do. Your videos have been helping me immensely

Dr. Fung offers solution to US health crisis
what IF protocol did you use? 16:8? 5:2? something else?
@Raheel Siddiquei 5 days for me. 5.6
@@claytonhewlett6149 Hi what IF protocol did you follow and what was your diet like
@@mausambi613 one 24 hour fast and one 96 hour fast.
Calories in Calories out is totally bogus. Keep listening.
Calories are not bogus. They're just mostly irrelevant in this
And the things he promotes actually work!
Some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data:
The hunger hormone ghrelin lowers over time with extended fasting and rise from dieting
Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue th-cam.com/video/giEDadzoErs/w-d-xo.html
Does the body prefernetially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, it never uses mainly glucose for fuel and using glucose for fuel is very biochemically damaging! th-cam.com/video/Nf1jwMbvNxw/w-d-xo.html
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
Is fasting just the same as caloric restriction? No! Dieting increases the hunger hormone ghrelin while fasting decreases it and has many other health benefits! th-cam.com/video/sVl-nilhWLc/w-d-xo.html
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins.
In most cases no! th-cam.com/video/teQIaU6wp2o/w-d-xo.html
Fasting can make you gain muscle faster: th-cam.com/video/5RM8GRzsIIg/w-d-xo.html
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body.
Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! th-cam.com/video/BeC_gIR2Z14/w-d-xo.html
Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections.
What breaks a fast? th-cam.com/video/7aRLsCpxy3o/w-d-xo.html
Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it and builds muscle!
th-cam.com/video/fJUDucBWv4s/w-d-xo.html
Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks.

I discovered Jason Fung a few days ago and can’t believe how much I’m learning. I started reading the obesity code and I can’t put it down!
Incredible video Dr. Fung, I wish they taught this in school, your work is saving people.
Thank you ..wish my GP would of had this knowledge years ago ! Could have prevented over 20 years of struggle and pain for me 😊
Kia Ora Geoff...have you seen changes in your patients implementing these lectures?
Bless you! If only more docs would be open to learning from people like Dr. Fung and to become educated on nutrition.
Dr.Jason Fung is the best of all Doctors in the world. Thanks Dr. Fung, for helping people. May God bless you always.

I started doing this the first of this month. I have lost 3 lbs so far. I've been counting calories and exercising and wasn't really losing much at all. I cannot fast a whole day because I need to take medicine morning and night. But I am spacing my meals 12 hours every other day and it's working. Fasting is bariatric surgery without the surgery. Never thought of it that way!
Indeed. The stomach shrinks without being forced with food every day. It is a miracle that people do not succumb to the clear excess of food intake in modern rich societies.

Th problem is most of their training is to teach them which Drug should be prescribed.

Thank you for your knowledge, wisdom, and understanding.
Very informative Dr. Fung! You are the man!
Can a 16 hour a day fast reverse diabetes
Alejandro Avila Yes if you do it along with a proper diet. Also, you gotta lower your consumption of carbs and sugars up to 20-40 grams in order to reverse it. Thus, you need to be consistent.
I am working on avoiding the diabetes diagnosis to break the chain of diabetes in my family.
This guy really knows what he's talking about.
Thanks for the videos DR. Fung. Videos are very informative.
Thank you so Much for all you do Dr Fung.
Dr Fung is trying to give a presentation. Some of the audience is very rude interrupting him.
Especially when he has to repeat information they didn't previously pay attention to.
He's very patient.
billytheweasel true very nice guy!
Keep going, Belinda!
This is great information, can't wait to read your book when it comes out Dr Fung.
Dr.feng.......u r a revolutionary Dr.
I really enjoy watching your videos, just wish there were no commercials with food in them. It is enough to trigger cravings for me.
Top drawer stuff from Dr Fung again...
Thank you Dr. FUNG
These videos should have more views
Interesting how you can have more impact on reducing blood pressure by decreasing dietary sugars than by reducing salt. Yet, the mainstream message continues to be that excess salt in the diet causes high blood pressure. Where does that come from?
The salt industry has lower profits and hence less political power. They can't as effectively bribe our politicians, and "scientists".
there's some easy to digest """science""" behind it (salt tends to absorb water, which could make your blood thicker thus harder to pump) similar to the reason why fat often gets the blame for heart disease.
Hi Dr. Fung, would you have a final word on fruit for diabetics?
In addition some small patches of psoriasis
that developed at a time of extreme stress , seem to be slowly disappearing .
Great job, Steven. Paleo and intermittent fasting are two ways to achieve the same goal - lowering insulin levels to reduce insulin resistance.
as I watch this video what I contemplate
is how much physical weight I have to release:
(75.2 Lbs to be precisely exact!)
for the sake of my health
and for my well-being.
the thing is though...
I realize that I desperately also
hold on to all the excess weight:
for safety and for comfort.
dear God, please please please,
help the weight dissolve off of me,
and please help me to no longer have the need
to hold on to any of it, for the illusion
of safety and protection. I am ready
to be permanently, forever released
from these shackles...
Great information. Thank you Dr. Fung.
His numbers improved with this and taking multi-minerals, including chromium plus cinnamon
thanks for all the information you are helping s lot of people
T. Colin Campbell in his book “The China Study”, mainly talked about the dangers of animal protein causing diseases. His dietary recommendations are found on one page. His diet consists of less than 3% meat. I wouldn’t be surprised if he mentioned wheat but that surely was not his major observation.
Thank you very much Dr Fung for all your teaching. 😊
Dr Jason Fung, A desciple of you for long. Please talk about millets. While I am in U S I find it hard to get millets.
Insulin resistance is diabetes. Fasting sounds great it doesn't change the metabolic rate
A calorie deficient diet causes 50% loss of muscle and bone and 50 % fat however when the regain occurs which happens with this type of diet all of the regain weight will be fat.
Fasting helps with insulin sensitivity and no loss of muscle and bone.
Eat a little bit less doesn't work. Timing of meals is important. All good points Jason
many thanks.
.
Can it be proven that food companies are aware of the fact that SSB sugar sweetened beverages make you eat more of the food you drink it to?If they know this and exploits this then they should be held accountable and pay the bill for ALL the health issues we see now.Any whistle blowers from the food industry here ???
Mcdonald's has been sued for causing obesity by only offering food choices that were a combination that caused food addiction.
I really like your lecture. A lots of things that really not teach in medical school
My grandmother used to make me eat a tablespoon wheat germ and fish oil every time I visited with her.
"They want to sell you more food"
Plantains are very high in sugar (2 of them will give you 60 grams of sugar) and not that high in fiber (2 will give you only 8 grams of fiber), but are unrefined. So are they ok to eat?
You are correct. I would be careful about eating excessive amounts of plantain. Nevertheless, you can always see the effect of plantains on your own blood sugars to see if they are a problem.
Dear Dr. Fung,
While I cannot argue with the data related to the fasting benefits, I am still puzzled:
Shouldn't diet restriction mimicks gastric surgery more?
A stomach the size of walnut should not be able to take normal amount of food for any given day.
I was watching Barbara ONeill youtube on wheat sugar dairy. thx!
She has a wonderful nutrition ministry too. Her information is congruent with Dr. Fungs.

Intermittent Fasting and Paleo Diet are our nature. Carb-recommending and fat-shaming people forget that.
The only fruit I eat since starting keto is lemons and avocado which is so sad I’ve always being a huge fruit fan
I wish they taught this in schools!!!
There'll be close to no money in it, they'll not do.
What waters do you drink during your fast ? What’s brands ? When I fast I feel so weak.
Take care
Great information, thank you very much.
Please write a book about "The IGA Nephropathy Code". 🙂
All the medical advice I've heard is that Seniors should not fast. Sadly they are usually tho ones fighting obesity. Just as well, the times I've tried it I felt like I was starving.
