I love what the Drake Warden and its Drake could be. But the punch that it has by level 15, isnt as impactful. Higher level spells or Beast master have better damage outputs. And sure, its a damage sponge.
My dm and I agreed to just ignore the can’t fly rule so now at 7th level I’m set with my dragon rider. the reasoning being that a) spellcasters with fly and genie warlocks have access to better flying by 6th level. And b) if I were shoved off my airborne mount (Eldridge blast using bad guy or flying enemy with good strength) I’d be at substantial risk so it’s fair….my character died twice this way which is pretty hilarious
Yes! I play this one!!! In Tyranny of Dragons actually 🤣 (designed after a copper dragon so some rp fun) I kinda make the excuse that, as I told an npc childhood friend, “my magic seems to have ….done something weird…it manifests as a dragon now. Not a real one but, also its own personality?” Lol so I am going with that on how to explain. The meeting was through a dream and woke up with it on my lap and some basic knowledge of what it can do, magically. My character is still trying to figure out why, but I allude to a possibility of having some copper dragon ancestry in my character’s bloodline, who is a foil to the childhood friend who definitely has a chromatic dragon in their bloodline. Been so much fun to just really use the dragon theme for roleplaying!
The damage of its attack also increases with your Proficiency Bonus, so by 15th level it has a +8 to hit and deals 3d6+5 damage. That's pretty good, especially attached to a Large creature with a 19 AC and 80 hit points. Plus it gets a nice 30-foot cone breath weapon and some wonderful resistances on top of that
How many characters make it to level 15 though? Full casters get flight at level 5, some races get it there as well, and some are just born with it. Besides, it doesn't get bigger than a horse in the end, it's just a Roided-up scaly warhorse. My disappointment with it ingame has been immense.
8:58 You can’t actually fly on dragon back of you are small early but if your DM has a heart have him let you auto have this spell: Ebon’s Draconic Flight (3rd level Ranger spell) Casting time: 1 action Range: Touch Components: M (500 gold value pendant with a Dragon on it) Duration: 1 hour Touch your Draconic Companion and the creature and you gain the following powers related to the creature for the duration. 1) the creatures can take any size from tiny to large on it’s bonus action 2) the creatures can add to it’s speed any modifiers from species, class or spell to it’s own as long as you are touching it 3) You can ride it no matter where it goes (surroundings and mount rules allowing) 4) You can’t be forcefully separated from the mount for any reason short of a wish spell 5) You can telepathically communicate with the creature l. Upcasting: if cast with a Ranger spell slot at 5th level the Dragon can be made up to Huge size, gains 30 Temporary hit points and spell lasts for 8 hours. This means at the 9th level you can fly on the Drake. It only will last an hour (2 at max using 2014 5e rules at 9th level) and you can fly before most longer campaigns end. Also the upcasting means it has continuing value. Also this spell is this level to make it so multi-classing is less of a negative issue for some DMs. At most you can give up 1 ASI to get it one level earlier.
Wizards, Sorcerers, and Druids can all get the Summon Draconic Spirit spell and be riding around on a Dragon at 9th level... Granted only for an hour at a time, but still.
My dm and I changed the draconic spirit to be a real physical dragon and buffed their hp a bit and they get their own initiative but he can’t be resummoned so when she dies she’s dead. You can change the draconic spirits element when it’s resummoned so we just made a ritual spell I can cast once per day
Hey, if you dont mind answering, do you remember how much you guys buffed the dragon? Wanted to do something like that but i am not good in balacing in D&D
@@eumesmo9407 so my Ranger has a plus 2 in con and so does the drake so we just match my hp and hers, but if we think it’s a little too much she’ll just scale to whatever my hp was at the previous level
I tried playing a Drake Warden in a short campaign that fell apart. I always felt like it fell short. So I rewrote the character for a new campaign as a Fey Wonderer and it’s just so much more satisfying.
The drake warden is a good subclass, but the scaling is a bit too slow. Waiting to 15th level for it be large and fly is terrible. I had a drake warden in a game I ran, and I improved the feature.
I played a buffed version of drakewarden, (Buffed because everyone was being buffed with a "Boon" from the DM so he could run harder stuff without having everyone start at a higher lvl) Where my Dra8ke was essentially a Wyvern with a chaotic origin essentially It had a Breath weapon that that's properties were random (based on rolls) so like it could be a Fire cone or like Poison ball. I went Cav fighter and it was prob the most fun char I've played I felt like a awesome hunter who had a terror inducing absolute unit as a companion. Using a lance and Javalins off the back felt amazing, honestly the changes really felt like it Capitalized on the power fantasy of Drakewarden. basically a stronger Damg Drake but less tanky making it feel like a hit and run char. I would recommend this class to anyone as well as saying don't be afraid to allow changes to subclasses that enhance the theme it can really make a character and character very memorable.
brother! i was just looking at your channel last night wondering when youd make this video then when i get on to each and watch youtube boom here you are btw you can fly with your dragon if you have it grapple you then only loses half its flight
If you want to be a true dragon knight, either do Ranger until lvl 7, and thenget 5 levels of Wizard, or just do 9 levels in Wizard for the Draconic Spirit Summon. Or get the Greater Steed with the Paladin. A pure Ranger is unfortunately the worst option, since you cannot ride and fly with the drake until it is first lvl 7, then level 15. A late game experience that a 9th level character can get is just poor design. All but the Drake's HP works off of your Proficiency Bonus, and it takes an action or a lvl 1 spell slot to resummon it, so there you go. The Ranger Drakewarden is the worst dragon knight you can get :(
I like the idea of playing a Ghostwise Halfling Drake Warden with a drake with lightning attack. I would pick the Psionic Warrior fighter sub class or Soul Knife. As the DM would you say a telekinetic leap to the back of a flying drake take movement speed from the PC? I like idea of a multiclass Drake Warden Psi Warrior or Cavalier having both the archery and another fighting style. What other fighting style goes well with archery?
I kind of wish there was a Paladin or Fighter version of the Drakewarden. I’d love for my dragon-rider to be a knight as opposed to being pigeon-holed into being a ranger. For some reason, rangers don’t excite me as much as knights, even though I feel like they should.
I would only play this class at level 7 where the drake can fly, the drake is essentially dead weight before then as it can only do 1 d6 of damage and in comparison to the beast master is a bit of a joke. If it could fly at level 3 that would be a different story. That would provide a few more options in battle and outside of it. But yeah drakewarden is a class I would only play for a higher level campaign
9:43 you know what sucks too? Its ability scores never change. It goes small to large with the same fucking strength/con score too I think the real issue is dragons are broken and being a Dragonrider is everyone's dream. I wish they just made the class OP then. Rangers are already a minority. Would it truly be bad if people had an incentive to play one finally?

Flight at 7th level by having the Drake Grapple you and fly. It's wings aren't trained enough for flying mount.

At half speed, but still it's good for in combat maneuvers. You'll also use the drake's action for that for that initial grapple.
