But let's just say that most tabletop characters contain some aspects of the players themselves, and as such, oftentimes also deal with similar issues the players themselves face in their daily life, simply altered to fit the setting. That's not a cop-out, it's totally valid. And the best characters are often those that are the closest to our hearts. It can be incredibly empowering to overcome your real life struggles in the safety of a game world, because it may give you the courage to face those issues in real live. That's why good dnd is the best therapy.

    • @sandrinenoel7329

    • @mateohorney9897
      @mateohorney9897 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      It's simple
      Step one: "H" have no sound, don't say them
      Step two: the English "E" have the same sounds as the French "I", replace all the "I" in a phrase with "E", nowthre tricky one, the French "E" sounds like the "ge" of "Los Angels"
      To practice try to say "intelligence"
      Step three: try to not put your thong between your teeth, in french no word i know (and i am french so i know many french word) need you to put your thong between your teeth, so the principal reason french have an accent is because they don't think of putting they're thong between they're teeth, so you need to think about not putting your thong between your teeth
      I think that's all, i don't really know anything else that could make you sound french

    4:11 "opportunity to have a mask" I agree with this wholeheartedly. A lot of my characters end up being similar to me in attitude but with one flaw blown up out of proportion, like being too angry or annoying or impulsive. This ends up making the character easier to slip into, as well as being a way for me to feel comfortable with my own flaws. It helps me get into the characters head easier and also to see how the things im embarrassed about can still be part of a rich character.

My friend's party are going online due to lockdowns and quarantine, which made it accessible for me to join them, and having someone else there that I know (even in an online setting) has already helped but I'm still so worried that I won't know what to say, or how to act.

  • @nickwilliams8302
    @nickwilliams8302 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Really good video, but the best advice comes at the start: "Don't overthink it."
    Don't get too hung up on, "What would my character do?" Most of the time, they're going to be trying to succeed at the thing they are trying to do. Because that's what people _do_ when they're trying to do a thing. Roleplaying is just taking on the role of a fictional character in a fictional world and making the decisions you think that character would make if they and their world were real.
    And 99% of the time, real people _aren't_ trying to "express their inner self" to those around them. They aren't trying to tell everyone they meet the exact strictures of their religion or the precise implications of their moral code. They don't wander up to people and tell them their entire life story. They're trying to _hide_ their personality flaws, not flaunt them. They're just trying to succeed at the thing that they're currently doing.
    So just relax, be normal and pay attention to the unfolding story and your character's place in it.

    The party knew I’m nervous with acting and bad been so supportive. They’ve taken that moment and treated with the weight I wanted it to have and I’ll keep trying to work at it for their sake as well :)

    I’ve never felt scared of role playing or felt like I couldn’t do it, and this is for 3 reasons
    1. I’m one of the few extroverted D&D players
    2. I’ve only made characters I know in and out, and I make sure I know my friends characters
    3. I have amazing friends

    Occasionally messing up while doing improv and roleplaying is not the same thing as "you feel like everybody around you is way better at it, you feel like you made a terrible character, you can't focus on your character's voice or traits, you get super anxious and overthink it until you stop enjoying the game and then you stop playing" Of course I have felt the first thing, but the second things? No way. That set of feelings you described at the beginning is pretty extreme. I'm not lying or trying to pretend I'm so good at roleplaying by saying, "No, I have never had that second experience you described". I just fucking love acting. I fucking love Dungeon's and Dragons. I have since the first musical I was in and the first session I ever played. It's just so natural to me. I have never been super anxious at the table or felt that I had a terrible character or any of those things. I don't know why you're asserting that everyone who has every played D&D has had a negative experience with it at some point. Think about if you said that about, like, any other game? "EVERY PERSON WHO HAS EVER PLAYED THIS GAME HAS GOTTEN REALLY ANXIOUS WHILE PLAYING IT AT ONE POINT AND IF THEY SAY THEY HAVEN'T THEY'RE FUCKING LYING." Jesus, dude. Not a good look for the hobby.

    See I really like my friends and all but there not the greatest when it comes to D&D. So I’m playing a Dwarf Cleric and I’m playing trickster for the rp and there was this person I never met before he was a friend of the dm he was playing rogue,my character wasn’t much of a healer he more liked lots of gold , playing tricks and finding creative ways to kill people. He was hard to roleplay cause I’m 15 and my voice isn’t to deep also this was like my third real game of dnd, so me and the rogue came up with cool ways to kill players I would cast my spell and then he would sneak up and go stabby stabby we role played this whole long and complicated process of us breaking into a house and him slicing peoples throats while I was making sure we didn’t get caught. We really bonded did out character voices and described what we were doing then we went dungeon crawling I had cure wounds that’s my only healing spell, the barbarian and fight were being super reckless and trying to run through it and kill everything they were at 1 and had to kill ogre lurking in the dungeon I cured their wounds then they got knocked out (they don’t rp) me and rogue were heavily roleplaying I said my epic battle cry as I charged in with my axe and the rogue covered me we did the voices and explained how together we chopped off the ogres head. The other players looked at us kinda strangely and were saying things like “that was weird”, “why didn’t you heal me your playin cleric”. Me and the rogue bonded cause of our roleplay the dm kicked those guys out invited so new guys who were socially awkward and didn’t know what to say we were excepting now they love dnd and they always want me to be a dwarf so I have epic role playing I’ll surprise them with one next campaign now we’re best friends. So everyone out there don’t be afraid to rp if people wanna be rude then their dicks and shouldn’t be playing this game; this game is about fun, creativity and making friends while dungeon crawling and casting epic spells. Thanks for making this video Jacob this will always be my fav dnd channel ( also sorry for my crappy grammar I’m not very good at grammar)

    No offense but I think this a bad video and here's why:
    Basically what you tell people is that they can say “sorry guys, Im not good at roleplaying, accept it or fuck you.“ That's the wrong way to go about things in this case, because nobody gets anywhere like that.
    It's not a sin to be a bad roleplayer, but this IS your hobby and you enjoy it, right? Why not pour a little of your heart and soul into it and try to be a little bit better. Get some advice, ask experienced players, look on forums, noone expects you to take an acting class. Even the little things might make a big difference for you.
    After all you are the one who gains the most from getting better, it's your fun. And if you do sth awsome, who knows? Maybe you'll inspire your friends to be a little bit better themselves and everyone wins.
    And at the end of the day, even if it doesn't quite work out the way you wanted it to, you did the best you could and noone can blame you, not even yourself.

    I need help.
    I'm playing with this nice group of people. Most of them know each other, but me and another one are outsiders. The other guy LOVES dnd and he's having fun no matter what. I don't. I have a character that I like, however I'm not comfortable/confident enough to play him as intended. And I really wish I did, and it pisses me off that I don't.
    I have vocalized my frustration, and like Jacob said, I say outloud "I don't know what to do" all the time, which they answer "that's allright" like Jacob said.
    The problem with that is this happens all the time. I've been reduced to a side character who doesn't do or say anything. I have vocalized that as well, which no one of them as an aswer for me other than "mybe swith your character" which I really don't want to do. I'm not having fun at all. What to do?

    One way I disconnect from my character is by describing their actions in the third person, unless I'm doing the voice, in which case I almost always say it was my character saying that.

    Story time
    One of my best friends plays a Warlock Sea Captain (high charisma and all that stuff) and she really struggled with rp the first few sessions cuz she was so affraid of making a "wrong" decision so once we got together plus her boyfriend (who's also a member of the party) and casually rped for a while, without the pressure of the game and nothing serious. Weplayed a lot with the members of the crew and my own pc (cuz they've been traveling together for a few years). So yeah, rping outside the game with people you feel comfortable with is a great way to improve your comfortability level while rping.

      I don't think I could play a character made by someone else very well at all. I wasn't inspired to make this person, I don't know their thoughts or how they'd react. Getting into the mind of a character takes time. Even more so when you don't know them. That's why actors take days, even weeks reading scripts before they go on camera. Even then they have constant direction on how to be this character.

    This has been a huge problem for me lately, even though I love the idea of RPing more than combat, I get really bad anxiety attacks and one big piece of advise I got and plan to use next session is just asking for a moment to think about what to say next, which in hindsight in a game like D&D makes a ton of sense, if combat can take many minutes for six seconds to pass why can’t dialogue take a few breaks between lines too

    • @thomash.5473
      @thomash.5473 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you need for a one shot you mean? You need your buddy's to be okay with you running the game first off then you need a monster and a location for said monster to inhabit sewers or a mine are good places you need a reason for your players to go to said location. The rest as they say is all in your court as the G.M. maps are nice but not necessary. Good luck and remember to have fun. Cuz that's what you are there for. You can sometimes get in 3 combats depending on how long you intend to play for 4 hours think about. 1 combat every 1.5 hours. So you might need more than one monster.

    • @elmatilda
      @elmatilda 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this is years late but sometimes playing into that can be a huge help! Like you can make an awkward character, or a quiet character, or a dumb character so when they say dumb things it’s just the character and great role playing. Or you can tailor your character to how you feel you would be most comfortable role playing in the given situation. For example Marisa Ray from Critical Role said she made Keyleth awkward socially because she was nervous to join the campaign with all these experienced voice actors, so her chosen character allowed her something to fall back on. For me personally, my first dnd character is very closed off and a little rude, because I find it hard to talk about emotions with people I don’t know very well and when I’m nervous I’ll (jokingly) insult people to deflect and hide my anxiety. While some people may say this is just playing myself, I think it’s a good place to start for a new player to create a character perhaps similar to yourself but certain traits blown up. So my character will just straight up insult people rather than do so jokingly, and she never laughs. Gives me something unique about her to separate her from myself whilst still making her fairly simple for me to roleplay. Sorry this was so long but maybe it will help someone!

It immediately brought the excitement and life out of my character and set his attitude for the rest of the game. The other players also gave me so much help and advice on making my character in general and it’s been awesome. Now I know that role playing a character can feel like an extension of your own personality traits. Way easier that way for me. Next dude is gonna be quiet and angry so that’ll be easy to do 😂

    I actually would have liked some good advice on how to roleplay better. I don't know how other people see this, but roleplaying good is a big part of the fun in p&p rpgs for me. I don't really care if someone else likes my roleplay (its great if they do tho), I want it to be good myself.
    A problem I have run into is that sometimes my characters are just very hard to roleplay, because I can't really say anything that gives the pc a personality. Does someone have a good method for creating characters that are easy to roleplay in a cool way? I've made a few good characters myself but lately I couldn't reproduce that.
