HYTORC Porsche Centerlock Wheel Torque Gun

- Have you ever tried to remove a centerlock wheel before? No? Well, it takes a lot of force to remove and tighten what is essentially a giant center lug nut that's tightened to 440ft-lbs. I have to put all my weight on a breaker bar and have someone push the brake pedal and hold the steering wheel just to remove my front wheels.
This is where the guys at HYTORC come in with the modified LiON electric torque multiplier! Joel from HYTORC came down for a visit to show me one of the prototype units they've custom programmed to tighten centerlocks to Porsche spec. Along with the LiON torque gun programming they've developed their own custom centerlocks which allow easy one-handed centerlock installation and removal all by yourself.
If you have a car or multiple with centerlocks I know this solution is going to be a worthwhile investment! We need to create some buzz behind this to light a fire under HYTORC & let them know they have a market!

This is without a doubt a perfect tool for track day enthusiasts in the GT cars. Those will be your biggest customers, then guys like Matt. Very cool product. These guys should talk to Porsche about a potential licensing deal
We use Hytorc in the oilfield. Great products.
Hydraulics to hold drill pipes?
@@Mike-kr5dn for heavy hex nuts on bolts.
More of a TorcUp man myself. But great technology.
See them all the time here in alberta
If you can convince them to lend you to the tool and their centre nut locks then you could make a follow-up video with long term experience with this product and give it your real-world testing on the street and the race track. Be very convincing to a lot of Porsche owners.
You are on to me. I asked Joel to get me one ASAP!
@@jrose7381 if I remember well he took his e92 to the track ONCE and completely hated it haha.
@@jrose7381 No, Matt.
First I was like "how you gonna hold that with that much torque?" As soon as he mentioned "outside part that doesn't spin" it clicked. Brilliant. I dont own a Porsche, but I totally understand the struggle Its like undoing and redoing axle nuts each time you want to take your wheel off + the added bonus of car being in the air.
Sign me up! The increased efficiency at the track would be an amazing time saver as we centerlock guys find the efficiency now at the track by doing a step in the process for all wheels then going to the next step for all wheels and so on. Loosen all centerlocks, change all wheels, paste all centerlocks, install all wheels, torque all centerlocks, loosen 60 degrees all centerlocks, final torque all centerlocks. This reduces the number of times you need to change from the breaker bar to the torque bar on the Precision Instruments wrench but it is definitely a process as you say and that damn paste always ends up on you no matter how careful you are! I still love the centerlocks and have more confidence in them from a safety perspective then traditional lugs but they DO take more work than traditional lugs, that is until this tool arrived. Not a whiny Porsche guy thing but the centerlock is actually a bolt and not a nut since they have male threads on the outside of the centerlock bolt and it goes into female threads on the hub.
I own exactly zero vehicles with centerlock style wheels like this, and I absolutely love this idea. I am familiar with Hytorc from various industrial applications so I definitely would have faith in their ability to make a good product.
Matty, you will make money on this one, demand world wide.
Wow. Just wow now this is a piece of engineering right here
These guys just set a new standard. This product spans many industries. Not just automotive.
If you can afford the car, you can afford the tool.
You would be surprised. Many people's are financing every damn thing in their life. Even their phone.
@@bestvidsdottk debt is cheap, blame the fed
It’s not much more than the torque multiplier with the reaction bar.
@Dominick that’s because enthusiasts haven’t lived with them….Porsche centerlocks are an utter PITA and serve no purpose other than ‘they look cool’….
“If you can afford the car, you can afford the tool.”
True 💯
Saw this with Dundon Skunkworks a couple months back. This is a total gamechanger for track GT owners. Whatever clout you have to get this into production, use it!!!!
Matt makes total sense. For the track guy it’s a no brainer. Hopefully the support for the product is there from the company.
If this can be shipped worldwide, this is a hit...
💯 % every GT owner will be very grateful to you...
Thank you Matt,
When a track weekend is 2K. This would be amazing tool for that application. I have buddies that do at least 10 track weekends a year
Well said.
Start sending in feedback directly to Hytorc!
Great tool for the track guys. Can’t imagine them not wanting this. This tool would sell fast in or around the ballpark of $3k. No reason why Porsche dealerships wouldn’t want this tool as well.
The guy who owns this business is out of NJ and I remember in the late 90’s he would park his F50 and Viper GTSR in front of his building. I would drive by and stop to see the F50 all the time as I worked in the area while interning for an engineering firm while in college. He came out and was so nice and told me to stop by anytime to see the cars. So cool to see them here.
I'm a track junkie with a 991.1 GT3 and I'm extremely interested in this type of solution/option. My biggest negative on the GT3/RS cars are the centerlocks. Great in theory, not in practical use of the car for those of us that need to change wheels more often than the average car owner. Very cool to see some development in this area!
OMG, this is a game changer. There would be few times that a normal person (GTS owner like myself) would need this, but that one occasion you do, totally worth it! Sign me up.
Still working on getting it done.
i Don't have a Porsche with center lock wheels ( who knows what the future holds )but this is a great product . My 100% support .
Love this ingenuity. I'm sure there will be a market for it. 7kish with a life time warranty and free replacement batteries, done deal for a lot of porche guys
I don't think that will be the way it's done. Batteries and tool will have a normal warranty.
Hey I've used Hytorc tools since the 90s on cranes and heavy machinery ,they saved my life
You have four tires try taking 50 bolts or more on a sleeping bearing for part of your days work
I still drink coffee out of my Hytorc mug
It s a great company
I'm no where near the owning a center lock Porsche stage of my life, but boy is that thing awesome.
I love it how centre lock wheels are supposed to be for rapid wheel changes during races but when it's adapted for use on a road car it makes the whole process so much harder and way slower. I am so glad my GT4 doesn't have them.
Hytorc owner was the original daily driven exotics back in the early 00.
Very true. Always had the rarest of cars in the parking lot that he would daily drive. Mahwah, NJ
Those were the days! Glad to see some other real OG guys in here 💪😎
WOW this tool looks amazing! If it comes in reasonably priced for mass production count me IN! Really hoping this prototype takes off and makes it to market. GAME CHANGER for centre locks.
Every dealer should want that, every shop that deals with those cars should want that. that should raise the numbers
Matt, Ducati guy here. Majority of their bikes and many other manufacturers use a similar rear center lock wheel nut with a specific torque spec. Not only car guys love your channel and ideas so if you could convince Hytorc to make a similar motorcycle brand specific castle nut we could all use that gun. Sounds like Hytorc is mainly experienced with the industrial world, how about you light the torch and lead him to all us garage guys!!!!
HYTORC is aware of many similar wheel related applications and they expect that the technology will cross-over well. As HYTORC scales these self-reacting fastener solutions out for wheels, they will certainly be looking to explore every possible opportunity to extend it to similar applications in other markets.
@@HYTORCNJ Amazing news! That gun would spread like a wild fire through the bike world.
I was deciding against center lock wheels for a 911 GTS cab that I will order until I saw your video. This tool, if affordable, solves tire wrestling problems.
I need this tool. Saves the grunt work of the breaker bar !
As a Main dealer technician that needs to work on centre-lock wheels on a regular basis. This is a must-have tool for us. Rather than having a second person and some long-ass tool and dealing with them manually was a pain in the ass for us.
This is fantastic, love the engineering behind it and it’s even better the company owners is a true gear head too.
First of all this is pure genius! Other than price I don’t see any reason not to buy this, Hytorc is also big in the oil industry I trust the product will also be quality as well
The fact that its compatible with the normal socket makes this great. I track my GT cars a lot and usually michelin\tire places are on site changing tires, stuff like that. My only problem is if its too expensive you can just convert to the cup car center lock and get rid of the complicated street setup entirely (from a track guy point of view).
curious, what's the difference between the cup car CL's...? and the street CL's...? talk to me Goose.
This is epic! Can’t wait to have this on the market, hopefully in Europe too!
It's a NO BRAINER! That nut assy looks awesome on your white RS. For any center lock guys, shops, race teams, this is a fantastic tool! Takes the uncertainty out of the proper removal and installation/tightening process. If I buy a center lock GT car next I'm going to buy one of these. Good thing I sold my C2S 991 last month, and I'm back in the hunt for my next car. LOL
Porsche shops would buy this easily and with track guys and teams
@@jrose7381 I wouldn't be so sure... They're hopping up and down on the breaker bar just like the rest of us
@@jrose7381 I watched MR racing team at the Ring and they were using the standard torque wrench on there GT3 so I don’t think they have a simple solution available to them. This is one company I would ask immediately as they are a Porsche Certified aftermarket part manufacturer.
Gt3 track guy here. 5-6k seems very expensive to me, but great product and great initiative. Good luck with moving it forward.
I think the $3500-4200 range would be a hit for all track guys and highend detail shops. As for me, I would love to have it but I wouldn’t use it enough to justify even the price above. Another thought is for hard core track guys who follow the Porsche track maintenance, the center locks need to be replaced after so many track miles. Are they going to replace these if that’s what they running?
Great video and your dialogue and approach to the whole dilemma is cool.
The 911 is my dream car and I’ve always wanted centre lock wheels, seeing this tool is a no brainier choice it has to be on my Porsche wish list, I hope it will be available by the time I’m in a position to make that wish come true
Definitely want One!
when you design the toolbox, consider offering a slimmer case since the 991.2 GT2 RS has an intercooler spray tank in the frunk.
I bet everyone I know will buy one. Absolutely perfect.
Hytorc "The nut busters".
For workshops and race teams this is a complete no brainer regardless of cost. For a track guy you'll sell exponentially more the further you can get the price below $5k.
crap, i need this -- need matching color nuts though
This tool is amazing, I would buy it.
I want that tool! Don’t care about the cost! It’s worth every penny! Save time and headaches.
I work for Ford motor co and that’s exactly how tooling is set up in our plants now except they’re called Stanley DC motors. Same exact way of torquing something down. Everything from .8NM to 1000nm is torqued down by electric motors no more air tools or impacts.
GM and FCA/Stalantis are the same exact way and I’m assuming German and Japanese manufacturers use Stanley as well. Pretty cool technology and it doesn’t beat up assemblers hands.
This is going to be a game changer!
the thing is this like a drill vs impact drill.hytorq is just like a drill and the castle is like the holder so that the hytorq dont rip your arm.
Saw this at Parade, simply an awesome tool & center lock solution.
I love those Hytorc and the only improvement I can think of would be a different way to unlock that pushing any 1 of the 3 buttons on the rear of the gun. It's very awkward in many positions and tight locations to squeeze the trigger and reach hand across hand to mash the button to unlock so it will start to turn. Otherwise it is an absolute perfect tool and I am speaking from experience as a Pipefitter using the Hytorc gun to torque flange bolts.
Heck yes, this seems like 'the' solution! I think it depends on price point, for those GT owners that aren't at the track everyday, but I think if you spread it on Rennlist, FB groups, etc.. you'll easily get a massive demand for it, talking first order of a few thousands of these for sure.
There are well over 30,000 Porsche 911 road cars out in the world (every GT2, GT2RS, GT3, GT3RS and GTS since the 997.2) with OEM center lock wheels. Plus there are the Porsche specialist service, tire and race shops that would want one. Given that you've already got the device and its programming, and have the tooling to make the adapter and new wheel nuts, there's surely a case for putting these into production! I'd certainly take one for my 997.2GT3
Cool tool, but using the simple wood clamp - as you mention - but against a 90degree angle fitting screwed into the harness mounts, you can easily apply enough braking force to both loosen and tighten the 442 lb ft with the car in the air.
I swap all wheels in 20 minutes that way. No issue at all.
But still, the tool is coooool, although it's a bit more MAN to work with the 4-5 ft breaker and torque wrench.
Never had the issue with front wheels turning, that you mentioned
I work on tractor trailers, wheel nuts are torqued to 450 to 500 ft. lbs. I have 3/4 torque wrench. Hub nuts are torqued all the way up to 500 ft. lbs. Definitely a cool ideal. I hope they build it for you Porsche folks. I will just stick with my simplified Dodges.
Have to agree that if you can get ur hands on a gt3 rs then tool cost isn't an issue. If you track ur car this seems like a must have. Sign me up.
That looks sick! Tell Hytorc to have some faith in us, and shoot for a high demand. Especially if the tool can come in OG Blue lol.
Have HyTorc develop reaction arms for various bolt patters of normal wheels. The reaction arm can engage the neighbor wheel stud like a socket. Then you have a tool to install and remove all wheels. This will greatly open the market. It will help justify GT owners, many of whom own other cars. It won't be limited to just Porsche cars.
Yes, HYTORC is actively testing some reaction fixtures that would make it possible to operate OEM center lock nuts by reacting on the wheel spokes. These require significant forces to be applied to the wheel spokes and thus they are making sure that they can be designed to be safe for both the operator and the wheels. Stay tuned for such an offering.
@@HYTORCNJ To expand the applications (and consumer market) of this tool I'm suggesting reaction arms be developed for traditional 4 and 5 bolt wheels. As a typical wheel bolt torque is around 110 ft-lbs is should be possible to anchor the reaction arm at a neighbor wheel bolt and not on a wheel spoke. Then there is no chance to damage the wheel finish.
this is like a tool that could be used in space. no tork is transferred to the user. very clever.
It’s just a electronic wrench with torque multiplier built in to it. I will buy it for 1000, never for 6000. Unless for a dealer
A shining example of " more dollars then sense "
The HYTORC Center Lock Nut is the perfect replacement for PORSCHE OEM Center Wheel Locking Nut. Designed to be compatible with the OEM part, the new HYTORC Center Lock Nut can be installed simply with HYTORC Electric Power Torque Tools making the installation easier, faster and safe than ever before. Find out more at centerlock.hytorc.com/
Let Adam LZ get his hands on this!
I hope this comes to market, day 1 buy
If they can make it work on traditional lugs too, then it worth it
They can… check out Hytorc Lug Nuts
I don't think I will ever be a Porsche GT owner, but if I was...I would buy one of these immediately. Any GT owner that does any of their own mechanical or detailing work is going to want and be able to afford one.
That is an amazing bit of kit 😍😍😍
Cool product. Overcomes the typical reason DIY-inclined people like myself shy away from center locks.
Amazing! Please make this available Hytorc!
I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
I’m going to have myself one of these..for a Car I don’t have yet 👌
@@jrose7381 I know several owners with GT3’s. Maybe I could hire it out 🤔
Product is a "game changer" however for me, this would be a seldom used tool, I would not be able to justify the cost to usage.
I honestly think if they make it as an attachment unit which you can use with a impact driver to drive the unit it would make more sence and would actually sell more units.
Matt - what you saw a couple of years ago was my car with the first prototype they had. The video was briefly out at the time. Just did a newer one recently.
Ah...yes, now I remember.
I love how those tires look I think I want to start using your system for the tires!!
That thing is going to be hyper successful! Congrats Matt
Matt - please put me on waiting list. Definitely going to buy one if it ever comes out.
It is a no brainer with this tool if you got a GT car with centre locks. I would buy it in a heart bit. What kept me away from centre locks are pain in the ass and risk of damaging the fenders each time the wheels have to come off.
I NEED THIS! Please carry this Matt
That’s the coolest tool ever 🤘🏽🇻🇪
wow. Want. The ability to do a wheel swap without a helper is by itself a selling point
I love, love this tool and can see it's benefit. BUT do you think Porsche will warranty anything if something goes wrong with this aftermarket nut etc? Just looking at this from all angles.
Great tool! Great quality! I believe that if you can afford the car you can afford the tool no problem. However, how many high class Porsche owners actually work on their own car? All the gear heads do but the majority of Porsche owners are older and in it for the class and prestige of the brand. This tool is definitely worth 5k, but realistically to get these things sold quickly it needs to be around 1,500 - 2,000. I could be wrong but idk, but what I do know is that this is a great tool.
I’m going to pass this video onto Porsche!
the 6ft bar, that high of a torque spec, and 2pc nut is Diesel Truck technology. strangely this is really a missed opportunity by Porsche themselves, but yeah i can see the issue with sideloading at the hub center (it's where all the force is present once the wheel is back on and the vehicle is in use) if you've spec'd your GT2/GT3 with the sweet OE Magnesiums. with those you want to be as delicate/precise as possible (actually even more so than Carbon). if its any consolation, for the price, this tool "system" naturally has application on Ferraris and McLarens, and who ever else specs centerlocks. even those fancy MV Agusta and Ducati motorcycles costing $50-$100 grand can benefit from this.
Very cool modern approach.
Great idea for sure - make sure the company is holding a lot of liability insurance though since a center lock nut is obviously a very important safety item. :-). Good luck!
I want this for my truck and cars. Looks like were gonna need wheels and hubs at the OGHQ.
For track junkies like me I need this!!!
also i think being able to buy sets of fasteners separate from the tools would be key because i assume a lot of guys have more than one porsche
That will be easy to do. We are going to be able to do different colors too.
8:37 Porsche use a torque gun with a reaction arm against the spokes on the production line. So it must be fine to do that.
Doing it once or twice while on the assembly line is a whole different thing than doing it constantly at a track day.
@@Awackypenguin Is that opinion, postulation or fact?
Yep…that’s exactly how they’re doing it…all built into a swing arm fixture
yeah i believe Ingersoll Rand also makes these style of "calibrated" torque devices, but they're generally only used in production environments. because: QC and Warranty.
That satisfaction level is at its peak I don't own a Porsche but I totally get it,
Tricky to visually tell when it spins at least on camera can us see it moving or is it purely sound and feel?
Impact can work on a centerlock. What do you think all the F1 and WEC cars and pitcrews use?
Air impact can be very torque controlled, but not with your regular consumer available air guns. Uryu, Atlas Copco, Red Rooster etc have been making torque shut-off air tools for decades.
A brand like Paoli makes torque shut-off tools specifically for motorsport applications.
Sold! Would love to be able to quickly swap wheels side to side while at the track would be awesome.
Setup a Kickstarter and you will be able to quickly gauge the viability plus you will get the seed money
Hytorc is already equipped to produce it, so we won't need to do that.
Give you an idea for demand and pre-sale?
For track use, a wired one or a wire battery adapter. would be useful to not have to worry about flat batteries.
Will be available. Already available for gun used in demo..
Matt, now is the exclusive dealer for this.
I'm talking them into having me and Dundon be the dealer for them.
I would definitely buy that tool like the other person said if you can afford the car you can afford the tool hopefully this thing will be out soon
How the hell does it not torque in your hand given its not a standard “hammering” torque wrench?
Edit: i think i get it, “reactionary arm” meaning it needs to leverage off something else, in this case its within the center nut.
Due to the multiple stages of the planetary gearing within the tool and the configuration of the center nut along with the driver. We are also slowing down the speed of the tool to enable precise torqueing.
That’s what the castles on the outer sleeve are for
