HYTORC Centerlock Wheel Gun - Centerlocks Made Easier!

  • We tested this a few months back, and it was a slightly different variant which was going to ship with centerlocks. After a lot of back and forth, and even after initially not wanting anything to do with this delrin reaction arm, I think this is absolutely the right move. There's no need to change the Porsche centerlocks if it's not necessary, and the delrin reaction arm touches the wheel ever so slightly, so my concern with damaging the wheel is non-existent. Very similar to what Porsche uses at the factory, the Hytorc Centerlock tool makes removing and re-torquing centerlocks a breeze. Where has this been all my life?!?!

    Would like to see if the reaction arm fits on all the Turbo S wheels. I think the Turbo S/GTS market could be as big as the GT3 & RS market. Would be a great too for longer road trips, means you can use smaller garages for punctures etc. that don’t have Porsche centre lock equipment. • @mikekuhnracing
      @mikekuhnracing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If that much pressure bends the spoke of your wheels then they probably shouldn't be on the porsche. Most wheels can handle alot more pressure than what this tool applies.

    • @jeffjeff4887

      It’s not that simple. He is applying 443ft-lbs of torque. That’s 443 pounds applied at one foot from the center of rotation. The reactive torque is the exact same number. 443. That reaction arm looks to be closer to 6 inches from the center of rotation. So you’re looking at almost 900 pounds of force being applied to that forged wheel spoke. I assume Hitorc worked with Porsche in the tool design and Porsche assured them the wheel can handle the stress of the reaction arm. I would be curious though what the wheel can handle before it bends.

    You must loosen the locking pin before trying to loosen the nut! Simply put a 1/2 inch square drive on the pin and tap it with a mallet or hammer gently and the pin will pop back loose. the you can easily insert the factory tool to remove the nut. The pin is stuck because it is preventing the nut from loosening while the car is being driven.

    Matt, the issue is not how slowly the reaction arm touches the spoke. Of course it will touch it slowly, you are using a torque multiplier, so the speed of the reaction arm turning will be equally slow as it touches the wheel spoke. You are applying several hundred pounds of force to a wheel spoke. 443 ft-lbs is the torque being applied, so a lever arm which is probably 6-8 inches long is applying about 700-800 pounds of force against that spoke. Further compounding the issue is that the Delrin sleeve is not touching the spoke across the entire face; since the Delrin roller is cylindrical, it is applying stress at a very small cross-sectional area on the contact patch with the spoke (i.e. probably a fairly small linear contact). Therefore, the point stress is very high. This happens once at the factory during assembly. For a tool that is marketed at people who will be using this over and over again (at the track for example), you are applying several hundred pounds of force on a painted surface that is not meant for it. I think the basic idea is fine, but why not make a reaction arm that uses the ground and avoid touching the wheel spoke whatsoever? I for one don't want any risk to a painted surface, especially not if I am being asked to spend $5,000. I had a thought - can the reaction arm be flipped around 180 degrees on the splined shaft (i.e. pointed toward you and not the car), and be supported by a support off the ground?

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are missing the cost of creating a new product from scratch. This is only $5000 because we are using what already exists.

    • @Patrick94GSR
      @Patrick94GSR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Delrin is a very robust material. The wheels even more so. It’ll be fine. Pretty sure a wheel is designed to withstand thousands of pounds of forces in all directions. They wouldn’t be suitable to use on a track otherwise.

    • @oversteer1767
      @oversteer1767 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The calculation works the other way, the reaction arm has leverage/length so the torque applied would be less that to the center/nut.

    • @lifebreath77
      @lifebreath77 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Since there’s a torque multiplier involved, there’s probably about 100# give or take on the spoke. Depends on the gearing ratio of multiplier. In any case it’s only a fraction of the 440 pounds being applied to the nut.

      The innovation is the outter mesh gear which mates with the reaction arm : The torque from the outter mesh gear induces a spin in the reaction arm which is interrupted by the spoke of the wheel, in turn transferring all effective torque from the outter mesh gear to the inner chuck in the power gun. This is torque previously generated by human arms! The power gun can torque up-to-OEM-specification for these wheel locks, which come exclusively to Porsche and other supercars, because it is calibrated to these models in HyTorc's software.

      @@ObsessedGarage I can tell you for a fact, I can change my CL on my GTS faster.
      It is as precise, maybe not, but the +/- 4% of a torque wrench is better than this tool and the cost and time.
