    Wow, you are so thorough and knowledgeable. I watched this, my 2001 had just revved up and been hard to stop. I learned a lot. My son fixed my problem with WD40 sprayed on the throttle cables. Thanks.

    I replaced the Cam position sensor 3 times in 3 months as it was not a faulty sensor. On my car, replacing the PCV valve was the solution. Too much crankcase pressure was the problem. I''ve driven the car over 70,000 without any cam sensor issues, but I clean the PCV valve now on a regular basis. Mr. Randolph.

    Have a 2007 PC cruiser also. Same problem. Changed the PVC valve but didn't help. Changed Cam sensor and it worked! So far it's been 2 weeks and still good. Thanks for your help you saved me a bundle of money.

    Thank you Sir. I have had this same problem for some time on an intermittent basis. Changed out the sensor and was able to clear the fault codes. 2003 PT GT turbo. Took it on a 20 km test drive. Thanks again she's running like New.

    Great job on the procedure and video! I have a 2005 Dream Cruiser that showed an 0340 code (with an 0522 code), and started chugging. Going to replace the cam sensor, and that hopefully should fix it. Thx for the info!

      @@jasongomez2513 I bought a $14 cheapo that didn’t fix the fault codes. I then bought a $74 Chrysler original sensor from Amazon, installed it, and ran the car for an hour with no faults. Success! Now I am changing the linkage bushings under the hood for shifting. Cramped down there for my hands. Thx for checking!

    Awesome knowledge and diagnostic detail. However, I replace an 04 Pt camshaft sensor two days ago and wished I had come across your video. We experienced intermittent issues with a code display and self clearing over a two month period, and the symptoms were the same as this 07, it only happened when warm and when suddenly stabbing the throttle, but not every time. The engine would buck, would not increase rpm and did limp on for a while before running well again, for a couple of weeks. Three days ago, I read an article that is fault can continue until total failure, at which point I bought the new camshaft sensor, and now the car runs great.

    I love you videos. Especially the ones for PT cruisers. I own a 2003 PT cruiser 2.4 L turbo and have watched a few of your videos for that car. Currently I have a problem with my headlights and my instrument panel light flickering while the vehicle is running. It happened with the vehicle is in park or in a gear. I just recently replaced the battery.

    Very good tutorial. Will be looking forward to more videos, hopefully, PT Cruiser-centric.A conscientious technician these days can't just throw parts at a problem and expect the customer to pay for his or her "dartboard" troubleshooting. With the OBDII code readers out there, the average driver can at least get a rough idea of what the problem could be and approach a technician with some semblance of understanding of the malfunction. Nice video, Joe. What I find intriguing is that even with all that high-tech diagnostic equipment available, that basic little 12-volt tattle-tale bulb, so very low-tech, still is indispensable to a good technician. Methodologies may change, but principles never do.

    2200 rpm max, my was doing the same. Not 2500 rpm... Camshaft is what mine was also! Great video! I tried crankshaft sensor first. Camshaft is it.

      @@quinatkins5659 yes I did. I changed all plugs and plug wires. Also clean the holes a bit. I have not had a problem with it since then. Make sure they set in snug and tight too. I think mine was my #2 it was not bad all the way just off and something got down in to where it seats. Caused all my problems. Hope this helps.

      @@jeremymccary2418 my camshaft sensor is getting oil in it still and I noticed after a day the engine does misfire. I’m gonna change out the valve seal I think it’s gone bad and that’s why oil is going to the camshaft. Thank you for responding to me I’m also gonna check and make sure the spark plugs too.

    My 2008 pt cruiser with 145k miles had been feeling pretty sluggish even though there was no check engine light. I wasn't sure if I was starting to lose compression or if I had a plugged exhaust. Not long ago, the check engine light finally came on. I had a p0420. At that point, I'm thinking mt cat is clogged. About 2 weeks later, my car wouldn't start. I disconnected my fuel line and put a cup under it to see if anything came out. I even went as far to try to crank it. I swapped the fuel pump module and it fired right up on the first try. My car also feels way faster now. I still have a 420 code but I'm going to check my exhaust back pressure eventually to see if my muffler is also clogged.

    This is an unpleasant video, witnessed this in back 2015 on a 2004 Sebring at highway speed of about 60 mph. Same symptoms, ran fine until about 10 minutes of driving the vehicle and then boy did is surge, buck, and complain. Once it starts, it's like you can't get going above 20-30 MPH until it stops surging. I only drove it that way once before I just towed it to a shop, not sure if people let these symptoms go longer typically. Not worth it to me. Pretty scary when I knew nothing about Chrysler/Dodge and typical cam/crank sensors issues. Hopefully something I won't ever experience again. Seems like a great mechanic in this video. Thumbs up.

    I have a PT Turbo ( with very good power ) It is not gutless.... that had similar issues..Oil getting on the magnets in the cam sensor is the problem..You did not fix the problem ..In short order your new cam sensor will repeat the problem..The cause is a dirty and malfunctioning PCV valve causing high crank case pressures and forcing oil onto the cam position sensor.. I replaced 3 cam sensors before I found the problem PCV issues... Replacing the PCV valve has solved my problem I have put on 50,000 miles with out any more malfunctions....I now have 167,000 very satisfied miles an a great little car....Mr.Randolph

      bud randolph ...there is constant oiling onto the camshaft...it is mounted on the end of the the camshaft where oil will also get...cam sensor has a gasket on it to keep oil from leaking externally...make sense...after market cam sensors have a high failure rate, I would bet that you finally got a good sensor....just sayin

      Hello Mike ! I'm aware of the oil circulation necessary to the Cam...However the tiny oil gasket used to contain excessive oil fails....I experimented with various sealants in addition to the gasket and they just provided temporary relief...I bought only mopare replacement parts to no avail. But each time that I removed , wiped and replaced the problematic sensor , I could could get a few more trouble free miles...The PCV valve does need to be replaced every 30,000 miles and for one reason or another I had never replaced the PCV valve..I'm due for another PCV valve service..Mr. Randolph...Thanks for your reply..

      One critical comment I overlooked is that I did not replace the 3rd cam sensor , I just replaced the PCV valve..Mr.Randolph...Still lovin the PTGT.

      Bud... Did your PT show a code? I have a 2005 turbo, the only code it's showing is power steering switch (p0551) but I have a pretty good misfire very similar to this in the video but there's no other code.

      Yes mine threw a cam position sensor code but not at the first signs of issues..It also gushed oil and was a mess..The power steering pump on my 2003 is very difficult to replace..One bolt under the pump is almost impossible to remove. It took me forever to replace an AC hose because it had one bolt under the PS pump...Good luck..

    Great video. Any advice on troubleshooting a 2003 PT turbo, radiator fan (PWM type) won't run, even w/the a/c on. Fan was replaced, same issue. I did measure 12v on one of the terminals feeding the fan. This is the expensive fan w/the PWM circuitry built into the connector block. I'm plowing through the tech manual now. Thanks.

    Good stuff. Thanks. Interesting that (I guess) the computer is confident enough in other signals to let the engine keep running without the cam signal - at least in a reduced mode so your not stuck in the boonies. Their version of limp in mode I guess.Thanks

    Sorry, but I had to chuckle that you test drove the vehicle with the gas tank light on showing low fuel. My old PT Cruiser would have left you stranded on the side road if you drove it very far once that light came on. Good video though and interesting. Just personally glad I got rid of my convertible PT cruiser long ago. :-)

    i bought a 2004 base pt 2 grand 92000 mile cust had water pump replace clean inside and out like new but at 93000 mile its doing what u pointed out this is my back up car no 3 i am a garage mechanic work on all type of cars this is a first thks for your infor will get back to u on this one

    I just got done doing this to mine, i thought ( for some reason) at first it was the O2 sensor, or perhapse a ghost code, when i would disconnect and reconnect the battery it would run fine for a while then after 20 or so miles it would do this, couldent get it up over 20 mph without it shuddering . I had a computer that could read old codes but it couldent find the problem, had to catch it while it was on. found out it was the cam sensor fixed it this afternoon and so far no more problems

    Hi Joe, I had a bad CPS on my 2009 PTC. I may have missed it, but I didn't see an explanation for the failure of the sensor. Replacing it may temporarily fix an underlying problem but what made the sensor fail, and how? A break in internal CPS coil wiring? Excessive engine heat to CPS internal coil? The Hall effect physics works, but what was the mechanical failure? Any ideas?

    First thing to check when the "check engine" light comes on is make sure the gas cap is screwed in.

    I would like to ask a question about the the factory scan tool. Does it allow you to go right in to the computer of say a 2001 PT cruiser and really find out why something is going on instead of a simple OBDII scan tool?
    It just seems that with all these modules inside cars even from 1996, if you want to keep your old car is running it's almost a necessity to have these diagnostic tools and / computers from the factory that Chrysler uses internally. I think its the DRB tool.
    that or just go out and get a full out oscilloscope.

    It was very helpful. I own a 2007 PT Cruiser. I had this problem twice (cam sensor) they replaced it. It seems to go bad evert 15 to 20 thousand miles. There are no recalls on it.

      I have an 04 sebring with the 2.7L and I changed the sensor twice and still have the problem. It would go away for a little and then come back. Is it possible the sludge issue in the 2.7's is related? I need to get the problem solved asap.

      No worries! This connector is a little difficult to backprobe, as there aren't dedicated ports for the terminal. The wires all go through the same weather seal and makes crossing a pin very easy, especially with the odd angle the connector sits at. Definitely have to be careful with these.

    Before replacing cam sensor follow wires down to below on drive shaft the wires sag down and rub on it cutting the wires and shorting them out eventually will not start or Even just die on you once broken all the way very common problem and goes undetected have to open wire harness covering to find it but look you will see covering wear on it to

      Yep the camera angle picked it up but you probably couldn't see it from your angle. The water probably made it evident like spraying down ignition wires & components.

      When I saw that I took it for a water droplet reflecting off the lights bouncing around on the sensor.

    Well did that fix the problem? having similar issues , replaced the 02 sensors so far.

    What would you think of doggy rpm going up hill?? 65 mph drops to 48 ,even after changing cam pos, sensor . Great vidio 👀👍👍🥂 Thank You 🏁 I took the negative off ,before removal of cam pos,sensor .

    I have the same issue on my moms old 08 PT. You can actually disconnect the cam sensor and it will take 10 cranks to start but it will run as the crank sensor works. It took 10 cranks, started, idled fine but still dropped rpm and bucked badly above 2000 rpm. I have a new cam sensor coming but it ran exactly the same when I plugged the old one back in. I'll see what happens with the new one when it shows up.

    Is this cam sensor problem something that I can afford to ignore for at least a small while? Or will it completely destroy the car if left unfixed? 05 pt cruiser turbo?...

    Hey ! Loved the video as I have the same exact problem. 2 quick questions.
    1. I have a problem to start the car too, is this related to this sensor too?
    2. Can I use a voltmeter instead of the vantage?

      Muhanned Tamer Unfortunately not. The sampling rate of your average voltmeter isn't fast enough to keep up with the voltage changes the sensor induces. Remember how fast the engine is spinning and how many counts the sensor has to send to the PCM. An oscilloscope is kinda mandatory at some level of signal diagnosis.

    Was a common issue with all 2.4 equipped Chrysler vehicles at that time. Wasn’t a horrible engine but it had its quirks for sure. When they ran they ran well. This engine is not related to later 2.4’s. Thought I should pin them that at out!

    If you go to troubleshooter and look up the code it will give you live data related to the sensor.

    had the same problem with the wifes PT Cruiser, $50 scan tool said cam sensor, and it was correct.
    sometimes cheep tools are worth the money.

      Torrie Landsman yeah but the whole point of diagnostics is that same code can be multiple things. Without testing first you might change a cam sensor when the problem is a broken wire in a harness somewhere. You don't know how many cars I diagnose that started out getting the code pulled free at autozone, sold a part, only for the same code to return. In the end I usually fix the problem for less than they paid for a part that didn't fix it with diagnostics included. By trying to avoid paying for a diagnostic they wound up paying twice as much. I make sure to stress to them the fact that they would've saved money by coming to the shop first instead and I usually gain a returning customer from the whole ordeal. A scan tool is great for getting direction but there is hardly any problem I have diagnosed with a scan tool alone. It's ALWAYS backed up by a scope or multimeter.
      If you're interested in working on your own vehicle then I highly recommend at least picking up something like a Uscope. It's a great budget single channel scope for someone not wanting to spend a lot of money and it's small and easy to use. I have a full 4 channel picoscope setup for when I need it but I use the Uscope a lot for verifying signals. I believe you can get the master kit with leads, amp clamp, and secondary ignition pickup for less than $400.

      What you are seeing is not arcing but the brake cleaner he sprayed on there casting a reflection as the engine moves
