Scotty I liked this video, it feels more like we're working with you, but it's still a short and to the point video like you usually do, we aren't watching you do every little thing. I like this format!
I didnt think it would be that easy. In my Mustang I had the opposite problem and I got little to no heat in the cold. Turns out the old thermostat had a hole in it. So I swapped it out from a 180 to a 195 degree and it performs decently with heating now.
A thermostat is like the easiest thing to figure out. Imagine just how many cars died cause of this.. My 1998 Hyundai accent died at 60000 miles cause the gage was placed AFTER the thermostat, not giving you any chance to know your car is overheating if your thermostat failed. Way worse cars imho
Just another uneducated PT Cruiser basher. You can tell they haven't worked on one in their life. Owner neglect is the number 1 reason most cars have issues to begin with.
I was told many years ago that you can't get a cooling system up to proper operating temps and pressures by only idling, it must be driven. You de-bunked that theory! Thank you. Excellent video. I love how you don't need to ask for donations, the money is being made by the labors exhibited in the video.
Inertia. Stubbornness. Ignorance. You have to wonder about someone who would buy one of these in the first place. I learned my lesson about non-Toyota/Honda automobiles decades ago. Toyota forever. All other cars are just to horgh at.
Thank you so much for making this video! Sadly it is probably too late for many owners. My family’s 2001 PT cruiser had a constant overheating issue. Out of several mechanics, NONE could diagnose the cause. My sister was driving it as it overheated & caught fire on the highway, eventually totally englufed in flames! She barely got out with no injuries. I hope your video helps others to prevent this. I will never buy a Chrysler product after that!
Being as I drive a Neon still and have for twenty years I imagine the misfires are from plugs that haven't been changed in forever. Gotta replace those copper core plugs about every 30,000 miles. No excuse not to either as they are incredibly easy to get to.
Got an 04 Neon SXT 5-speed hand me down that was wrecked twice my my elder sibling. About to hit 250k miles on the original transmission, clutch assembly, and engine. Motor mounts wear out fast and have had to replaced multiple times to fix excessive vibration in the passenger compartment, but other than that has been an amazing car. I’ve taken the thing all over the country, up and down mountain highways, the whole gambit and it still runs well! Currently drive my Neon 80+ miles a day commuting at freeway speeds.
In the SRT-4 Neon engine, which the PT Cruiser Turbo models had, the spark plugs are a bit harder to get to. You actually have to have like an 8 inch extension for your ratchet just to reach down into the engine and unscrew them
I love the fender covers, very professional. The fault code points to a stuck thermostat, very common. Easiest way to diagnose would be to touch the rad hoses. They should be close in temperature, indicating flow.
I had a PT Cruiser rental about 11 years ago when my Toyota was in the body shop. To be fair it was a decent car. Roomy and decent driving. My only complaint was the automatic transmission only allowed manual shifting in gears 1, 3 and 4. When going up grades I wanted to downshift to 2nd. 1st was to low and 3rd was too tall. It wouldn't stay in 2nd. The 3 weeks I drove it was a decent experience.
Probably because it was a new car, most all cars are nice when they are new, the real question is what's it's like 10 years later with 120k, is it just about junk or is it ready for another 100k
@@thetechlibrarian I bought one cheap for $500 with over 140k on it. It was suffering from the neglect that the last couple of owners had given it. A bit of TLC made it a car solid for a cross country trip, in which it did happily. No squeaks, no rattles, no complaints. As has been mentioned elsewhere in the comments, just take care of them and they'll last. The only true issue with working on these is the fact that the engine bays are tight due to the "retro" styling. It makes some work harder than it needs to be as you have to remove parts to make space to work. One of those things is the timing belt, as it requires removing a section of the frame to gain full access. Since it's a "deep" repair, there's a list of seals and the water pump are included in the swap list making it expensive. You have to learn to fix these yourself as nobody wants to touch these anymore due to the labor cost. My first timing belt job was an entire weekend with three of us taking a very systematic and careful approach to ensure that we got everything together correctly, and not have to repeat the process. I could probably tackle it solo now in about a day.
I've had my 2001 PT Cruiser ever since I ordered it from the dealer "OUT OF A BOOK" because they weren't in the dealership yet and only after 20 years an I having to do any major maintenance on it. I have decided to replace everything since almost everything is original even though some things are still in decent shape such as the half shafts, motor mounts, belts and hoses. I am also changing the spark plugs and coil even though they were changed 10 years ago and the car is running fine. My care has NEVER had a problem except for s single crack in the dash and a cracked windshield caused by a rock off of a dump truck.
Literally just two days ago have my PT Cruiser turbo taken into the shop and valve cover head gaskets water pump timing belt and solid motor mounts put in
😱OMG! You've actually responded to my comment with a full video. I'm Shook! I didn't think you could. Lol! I would love to see more videos like these. This was so well informed. Thanks a million Scotty. You're the best!
At the end of the day it's not what kind of car make it is, its the upkeep maintenance u do to it. You have to put more maintenance in the American car but its cheaper. And even a Toyota or honda has its share of problems!
i got the same type of PT, and the mileage is almost there too, it's a great little car, the turbo really gets the car up and going, i know the car is an acquired taste look wise, and it has a bad rep, but hey, so did the Delorean...;) a know of a few mechanics that own them, the only complaint I hear, is they're cramped to work on...
Mom has a 08 she was given brand new. It's been a great car for her and no major problems yet. I have a 95 Neon my lil sister bought brand new after I told her what options to get. It has 185k on it now on the original engine. I got it in 05 and I have replaced the timing belt and water pump at 155k, the rear main at 165k, and the front brakes a few years ago. It is easier to work on than the pt due to more room but they drive pretty similar through the pt is a bit smoother running because of the balance shafts and smaller cam profile. 95 neons had a hotter cam then the newer models just like 68 340 4 speed engines bad a hotter cam then the auto cars so slightly more power. Moms we had to replace the fan set up due to the controler going bad and it dying when she turned on the air and the second fan didn't so the compressor froze up and killed it. Bought a aftermarket fan on Amazon and it works great again for 90 bucks. People going to hate and many have no real world experience with the things they hate. They did have the head gasket recall on the 95's because Daimler wanted to use a cheaper gasket and that gave them a bad reputation but it was the crappy gasket they used. I haven't had to replace it since sister did at 70k, the better gasket truly was a quality part and they had no more issues with them after that.
Scotty's pretty smart! Thanks Boss! For a cheap car made in Mexico, the Cruiser isn't too bad, except for the hassle of ever trying to replace the water pump.
Very basic n solid technique for a temperature run high diagnostic. In addition, u can also check the coolant tank at the top and the oil cap to see if there’s any oil on it. If it’s with grey colour cream like oil, it got a chance of blown head gasket.
I had some issues with a customers PT Cruiser years ago. The original problem was changing the timing belt. We did that, and about a week later it came back with overheating, and oil pressure problems. So we pulled out the motor and took it down, the head gasket wasn’t blown, so we went ahead and rebuilt the motor for the customer. Long story short, when I quit working as a mechanic, my dad swapped the motor for him because the Piston Holes were all ragged out and shot. I hate hate HATE PT Losers...... Love your videos bud!
Darryl Thomas: Spoken Like a Modern Day "Parts Swapper" (err I mean mechanic) Many things can throw codes, doesn't mean what it says is correct, that's why the old school guys that have wrenched for 40+ years do what is called "TROUBLESHOOTING" as Scotty was showing.
YOU SHOULD ALWAYS PERFORM A ENGINE BLOCK TEST, WHEN A VEHICLE HAS BEEN OVERHEATED. PO300 IS A GOOD INDICATION, COOLANT IS ENTERING THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER, AND CAUSING, MULTIPLE CYLINDER MISFIRES.
That's a good idea, the cooling system is the main weak point of the PT - pretty much every part is problematic. The 2.4L also needs relatively frequent plug and wire changes and is known for carboned and pitted exhaust valves and seats.
I'd love to see more videos like this of you fixing customers' cars. This was both interesting and entertaining. I mean, I like all your videos but this was particularly interesting to watch.
I have a PT cruiser and I had to change the thermostat last week, not because of overheating, but because it would make a crazy bubbling sound after a varying amount of use. The thermostat was very tough to operate and was causing major steam buildup prior to opening and it would open just barely so my reserve tank kept blowing its reserve out due to the excess amount of pressurized steam it got. Found out for sure when I left the cap off, topped off the system with water, and ran it on idle until the thermostat opened, and a bellowing of steam and bubbles came shooting out. Swapped the thermostat and now it is working without issue.
A bad thermostat is a serious issue to a newbie mechanic or someone that can't change a tire. If this was a d a m n Toyota you would be in love of how simple a fix it was...
Don't know why everyone dumps on PT's. My '03 has 208k miles and runs fine. Yes, I did need to rebuild the tranny at 165k, but other than change the timing belt (and water pump-you do both) at the 100k intervals (twice) I've done no other major work. Body is still tight and interior has held up really well. It's a daily driver that simply always works. OK, I am the original owner and yes, I do change the oil every 5k and have regular maintenance done. I do work on it myself for the small stuff and find it easy to get to things. Like any car, if you take reasonable care of it, it will last.
According to the haters, you're supposed to be able to drive one of these for eleventy bazillion miles without ever touching a wrench for it to be a good car. LOL Naaaah… they'd still hate on it if every single one of these ever made were still on the road with eleventy bazillion miles and never needing a single part touched.
Hi Scotty, one thing to know is that the Pt Cruise fan is a dual speed fan, if the fan does not go into full speed mode, the car will overheat. I’ve had to change the fans on a 2003 and 2004 due to this problem. Thank you for your videos!
I love and miss these types of videos! I am going to school to become a technician so videos like these showing how to fix problems like this are great! I have seen a lot of your videos but I have not seen them all
Scotty did you secretly buy a pt cruiser. 3rd time I saw it in vids It's ok. You don't need anybody's permission. Lol These cars are great to learn on.tight engine bay.need to make a bunch of homemade tools to work on it. Hell I've been driving mine with ac on for 2 yrs. Cant wait till I have to do the starter. Timing belt was fun. Have had this car for 8years.
Scotty, it is all the same system ( the cooling system) it is a different electrical circuit that operates the cooling fan with and without air conditioning on. Usually, the ecm provides a ground to all cooling fan relays whenever the air conditioning is on, without the a/c on it is usually the submerged cooling temperature sensors that close that circuit so the ecm can ground the primary cooling fan. The Cem always closes the ground circuit, never the power circuit. This could have also been shown with a test light or dvm at the cooling fan relay in the fuse center. Battery positive will always be present at the relay provided the fuse is not open and that wiring is not damaged. The ground will be switched on and off by the ecm According to engine temperature or a/c input signal or both. You can also jump a ground to the relay terminal from battery negative ( with a power probe or a fused jumper for safety [in the event it has a short to power]) to check the integrity of the circuit with a cold engine or to diagnose a failed ecm circuit with a hot engine. That is a valuable diagnostic while the engine is heating up, instead of waiting around doing nothing. Thank you for your videos Mr. Kilmer. Sorry for the system/circuit clarification I just thought it was necessary for a better understanding and to mitigate confusion.
If stuck open, no. If stuck closed, you won't get more than a few minutes of running time before you start overheating. You can easily blow a head gasket that way.
@@benson2873 Thanks for that brilliant analysis. Have you ever driven or owned one? Sure the quality isn't the best, but I liked mine. Mine was a 5 speed manual and very practical. The rear seats came out. It's basically a mini-minivan. I had to do a series of repairs to the vehicle about half way through my ownership but once that was done it was pretty reliable. It was towed twice in 10 years of ownership. Once for the crankshaft position sensor and once because the timing belt broke (my fault for not replacing it pre-emptively).
@Roberto Mundo hahaha just once. Put two crank sensors in it though. I've heard that you should always use mopar parts for the sensors on these things cause the aftermarket stuff is garbage
Scotty I have to say I absolutely love this kind of video. I can imagine this takes a lot more work than your usual videos but seeing your step by step thought process of fixing something is really special. Here's hoping to see more of these from you every now and again.
In your comments Scotty, you stated why not to buy a Chrysler , serious problems. Really Scotty? A tstat is a serious problem? The radiator was replaced due to a front end collision? Is that the fault of Chrysler engineering or bc of the accident? It just goes to show how biased you are towards Chrysler. This vehicle is 10 years old and small issues like this are not considered serious. If you tell your viewers that the engine head gaskets are bad or something wrong internally with the engine, drivetrain or other major components, then i can agree with your decree, that a certain make has serious problems but to make mountain out of something small, really reeks of your inward bias towards Chrysler. As i said before and i will say it again, Chrysler has made many extremely durable and reliable vehicles and they far outlasted anything thst GM or FORD made back when you started as a spring chicken mechanic 51 yrs ago
I like that convertible pt cruiser turbocharged as a rental car. Always performed well in Hawaii, and could carry surfboards. Never would own one, but rental was fun while still new.
If you ignore the overheat light in RED on the gauge cluster, then yes it is serious, and you deserve an overheated engine. Or if you look at the bright red light next to your speedometer/other gauges, you pull over, call a tow, and pay for a 15 dollar thermostat with a half hour of labor and it is fixed.@@GuerreroDelInfo
20 temperature sensor ? That's a figure of speech right ? 2 at most I can see. It is possible to get 1 defect right out of the box. If you replaced it 3 maybe 4 times, that tells you, the problem is somewhere else.
That customer was lucky. My 2005 Rendezvous began to overheat and it turned out to be a blown head gasket. The body is fine; the seats and upholstery are excellent and the transmission still works, but the bloody engine is completely shot. Now have a lawn ornament to get rid of.
Scotty you clickbaited us... that's not a serious problem at all and I'm so amazed at that thermostat is that easy to change you're actually making Chrysler look good right now. That is like the easiest thermostat I've ever seen to change. Thermostats go out there's nothing wrong with that. I thought it was going to have some kind of electrical nightmare or something. So you should have just said and the title of the video I fixed the issue on the PT cruiser. Not the PT cruiser has a serious problem. You have the serious problem. Lol no more trolling Scottie
Idk, I car that has over heated can have permanent damage. I've seen alot of them have trouble starting up ever since over heating regardless if the owner said they "fixed" it. Especially with these aluminum engines that can easily be warped from the intense heat
@@CarlosGutierrez-qw6pr yeah just thermostat going out is normal. I had it go out on two different cars. Saw it got warm and wouldn't go down. Changed it. No issues after. That's just standard maintenance like a water pump.
@@1XSTEALTHTWINTURBOX1 yeah the thermostat is simple, but that's that what the underlying issue. overheating is a major and serious issue that can easily cuz your engine to be ruined. Doesn't matter how easy it is to fix it, it's about the severity of not catching the problem in time and the ultimate problems it can easily cause. Low oil is possibly extremely easy to fix, doesn't mean it's not a serious issue that can destroy the engine
@@CarlosGutierrez-qw6pr Ok we will put out a video. "This 93 Camry Has a Serious problem". run that by him and see what he says. Because that is one of the cars it went out on. The title should of just said I fixed the issue on the PC Cruiser! I don't like PC cruisers, but lets put "This _____ Insert Your favorite car__ has a serious problem." It won't sound right. It common practice to hear someone say they are changing there thermostat, it's gett warm or it's overheating. people no to experience will let it run before they notice it, that's there issue.
@@CarlosGutierrez-qw6pr So is running on tires with low air pressure. Are you going to throw the make and model of the vehicle out there in the heading saying this specific car has serious issues? The problem was an easy fix.
A serious problem lol A thermostat? LOLOL God help us all man. Buy a scan tool and perform a bi-directional test on the cooling fan next time and monitor the coolant temp as well. At least you know what the pcm is seeing in stead of fumbling around. True professional here.
My favorite Cruiser story... picked up a brand new rental PT at O’Hare then drove the 30 miles to the suburb I would be working at. I was sitting at an intersection and thought “whose car stinks?” Looked around and saw I was the only car at the intersection! I was too busy to drive back to the airport or deal with the rental co so I was stuck with I guess some kinda exhaust leak for a couple of days. Mopar’s finest!

Just another uneducated PT Cruiser basher. You can tell they haven't worked on one in their life. Owner neglect is the number 1 reason most cars have issues to begin with.
You will also notice that the car needed a 15 min repair and a $3 part. How much easier do you need it to be?
I was told many years ago that you can't get a cooling system up to proper operating temps and pressures by only idling, it must be driven. You de-bunked that theory!
Thank you. Excellent video. I love how you don't need to ask for donations, the money is being made by the labors exhibited in the video.
I have a buddy that has one. He's put thousands into it. It is truly a piece of $hit car.
Why would you put thousands into a PT cruiser?
David Prodigy I guess you could say, it’s number one on the $hit parade.
Inertia. Stubbornness. Ignorance. You have to wonder about someone who would buy one of these in the first place. I learned my lesson about non-Toyota/Honda automobiles decades ago. Toyota forever. All other cars are just to horgh at.
@@CosmicStargoat I have a 2004 Chevy Malibu Max, I'd have to say it has been a real good car.
@@2bitmarketanarchist337 he couldn't afford to get another car, but it looks like he should of figured out a way.
Hey mate, does your neon vibrate like crazy when on idle?
I have an 18 year old NEON it still runs good 250;000 KM on it, I bought a newer car because I got sick of the NEON being too reliable
Felt cute might grenade 3rd gear later idk
You actually have to have like an 8 inch extension for your ratchet just to reach down into the engine and unscrew them
Vid is 20 hours old and has over 114k views. You are doing some real good work here, thank you, and please keep up the good work.
Is it that it's a PT Cruiser and not a '94 Toyota Celica?
Azech Oh the first part is definitely correct, the second part probably that too lol
I had a PT Cruiser for a year. 12k miles when I got it.. never spent that much money in repairs on a car. Back to Toyota and life is good.
Liking these actual repair videos
Because I'm dumb, I would have replaced the thermostat first. I could never have a youtube car repair channel.
I love the fender covers, very professional.
The fault code points to a stuck thermostat, very common. Easiest way to diagnose
would be to touch the rad hoses. They should be close in temperature, indicating flow.
I don't think I've ever seen a P0128 that was not a failed thermostat. Of course you still have to make sure. Fix it right the first time.
I agree. Touching upper and lower road hose will tell you if you have coolant flow, I.e open or closed thermostat
This is what I call a car repair video, please keep this format going. Thanks for the good information

You're not fooling us, your cat actually fixed this car.

At the end of the day it's not what kind of car make it is, its the upkeep maintenance u do to it. You have to put more maintenance in the American car but its cheaper. And even a Toyota or honda has its share of problems!

Got a turbo PT Crusier still going with over 215,000 miles
i got the same type of PT, and the mileage is almost there too, it's a great little car, the turbo really gets the car up and going, i know the car is an acquired taste look wise, and it has a bad rep, but hey, so did the Delorean...;) a know of a few mechanics that own them, the only complaint I hear, is they're cramped to work on...
Car probably lasts cus it's properly maintained
Because you take care of it well!
Scotty's pretty smart! Thanks Boss! For a cheap car made in Mexico, the Cruiser isn't too bad, except for the hassle of ever trying to replace the water pump.
Great video, I have 4 cats that help me, too. They also know lots of 4 letter words, but they ain’t talking!
meow ...purr ...grrr ...hiss
Very basic n solid technique for a temperature run high diagnostic. In addition, u can also check the coolant tank at the top and the oil cap to see if there’s any oil on it. If it’s with grey colour cream like oil, it got a chance of blown head gasket.
are you ever going to give that cat some love, Scotty?
Your going to say I’m crazy but I had one of those pt cruiser GT and I loved it!!!! Never gave me problems and is ran like a champ.

Scotty your code reader said thermostat if im not mistaken..but yea checks are also good to know.
Yes I agree... more videos like this one , keep up the good work 👍
thank you.
I'd love to see more videos like this of you fixing customers' cars. This was both interesting and entertaining. I mean, I like all your videos but this was particularly interesting to watch.
hey scotty!! your cat pillow followed you outside!!
It doesn't get much easier than it is to change a thermostat on a PT. But thank god it wasn't a water pump or it would be a 13hour job.
That hand on the capless radiator is genius. Scotty, you rule!

Great video!! But I'm not sure a stuck thermostat is a "serious problem".
If stuck open, no. If stuck closed, you won't get more than a few minutes of running time before you start overheating. You can easily blow a head gasket that way.
Makes me miss my PT Cruiser. The temperature was always rock solid. right on that middle line.
Dave junk cars ugly too.
Scotty Kilmer = awesome guy.
True I guess but I still l enjoy Scotty
I like that convertible pt cruiser turbocharged as a rental car. Always performed well in Hawaii, and could carry surfboards. Never would own one, but rental was fun while still new.
Bad thermostat is a serious problem? I guess I fixed a serious problem last month. Neat.
Yup, the engine could overheat and then bye bye engine.
This new videos featuring real cars you are repairing are great. Like seeing how you break down the problems.
Oh man, if only I'd seen this video before I went through 20 new temperature gauges -- thinking they were all faulty :-)
