"I think we're going to have to tear the TIPM apart." I rub my hands together briskly saying to myself "Oh, yeah! This is gonna be good!" I'm sitting on the edge of my chair waiting for the next episode of "Ivan fixes the unfixable."!

    TIPM: Terribly Implemented Problem Module.
My biggest concern was a harness problem near the transmission, and the engine rocking/vibrating during startup was causing a short/open. Awesome job testing at the TIPM to rule that out! :D

My sister in law had the same problem 2007 PT Cruiser. The local trans shop said they would not work on it so I inherited the problem. I first replaced the fuse box without success so next was a new (rebuilt) PCM and that fixed it. Battery and alternator were checked OK. Drove me nuts.

Hey thanks a lot for your video. My pt cruiser was doing the same same thing. Your wire splice didn't work for me. Probably didn't have the right wires. So I bought a rebuilt tipm from Maks and installed it. Works perfect now. You steered me in the right direction. Thanks so much.

I found a lot of time with the electronic sensors units, the first check is to unplug and plug while wiggle them which can clear oxidation of the metal connector. Have very good luck with this as often the thing starts to work.

My experience in repairing TIPMs has not been good. In my neighborhood (about fifty miles East of Ivan's shop) I get quite a few cars whose owners commute on I-80... where calcium chloride brine is used in the winter. I've opened TIPMs, especially on Dakota trucks, where the copper traces have completely delaminated from the circuit board or even dissolved completely. I try to save folks money whenever I can, but I think my track record for resurrecting dead TIPMs is about one-in-ten. Once the salt gets in, they're as good as dead.

You are right, I see some similarities with the Jeep Commander video! I bet there is a relay inside the TIPM that is gone bad. If you get the part number off the relay then you may be able to find one and solder it in. Like in the Jeep Commander video I would think an easy fix would be to wire an ignition wire to the TIPM output circuit and problem should be solved!

Omg can't believe I found this. My mechanic had my car 8 months trying to get refurbished ecms. The 4th one worked. Then got it home and 3 codes came up off and on...a thermostat...which they had replaced last year. Cleared code and it never came on again days later code came up with #4 misfire, and they had just replaced it all during the 8 months they had it and it had no symptoms. They cleared code again and it never came back. Then engine light came on a week later 0882 and them went off by itself. Few days later it came on again but this time car went into limp mode stuck in 2nd gear. They don't want to work on my car again as they had it 8 months and every mechanic had worked on my car at some point. They agreed to look at my car again and I am going to show them this video.

I wonder why they were so popular when they came out. If you can remember back to 2001, dealerships couldn't keep them in stock, dealerships had to order direct from the factory if somebody wanted one. I don't know for sure but I think there may still be some PT Cruiser clubs around. What changed from then to now about that car?

@@0386rm the cars got a few miles on them and people saw what a pile they were. Chrysler made a serious mistake with these in that not only was the quality poor, they saddled it with an engine that could barely get out of its own way.

2005 model (pre TIPM)--check your "corroded" grounds at left inner engine bay---there is 2 points where there are multiple grounds (all the little black wires) from fuse box and left headlight assembly! --ran into this today!! 4/30/22 easy fix in an hour! all corrosion in the factory ring terminals!---wires are just long enough to allow you to cut off original rings and install new ones (fill with di-electic grease) crimp-reground n GO!)

OMG ... I HATE PT Cruisers! They're enough to make a tech quit and become a dentist ... 🤯
I did a timing belt on one before - never been so infuriated at automotive engineering in my life!! Same customer later melted the engine down. With the doors that wouldn't latch, cat code, and rear wheels that were ready to fall off after driving 10k miles on completely wasted wheel bearings, it sat in my yard for almost 2 years. Just scrapped it recently - that was a joyous day!! HATE those things!!! 🤬
Can't wait to see inside that TIPM. Another wonder of Chrysler engineering right there. Great diag, Ivan! Scope definitely key on this one.😎

surprised the rims didn't leak all the air after the factory supplied tires needed changed at 10K and the salt done ate the coating off the rims corroding them right around the beads....
seen just that when they first came out, they tried to blame it on the tire change places..... they didn't after they seen whom changed them :))

My mother had a 04 Sebring sedan with 256k on her 2.4. Granted it went through 2 t-belts and w/p's and 1 headgasket, but it ran great. Finally got rid of it when the trans wore out. Oddly enough, the only electrical problem we ever had was an ABS module that died at 165k. Before that she had a 97 Stratus, again 2.4. We sold that in early 04 with just 77k on it but the guy that bought it put another 186k more on it (with lots of work). The 1 was the victim of an accident in which the insurance co. totaled the car. Seems that after 1 had the headgasket oil leak problems solved, they could run a long time.

    • @adamtrombino106
      @adamtrombino106 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I've done a couple that way with f/p and trans relays on some 05-06s, however, when trying this on newer models, they wouldn't work. The TIPM has resistors and timers inside effectively making them time delay relays and the PCM needs to see those values or it will shut off the signal, and throw codes. The few TIPMs I'd tried to take apart we so smoked, they stunk. The few used 1's I've tried didn't last long. I wanna see Ivan's fix, cuz I think he's gonna try, and since this is such a well maintained low mileage car, he may get lucky. I know Eric O has fixed at least 1, so have other TH-camrs, but personally for my time, I'm taking Keith's approach: Customer needs and gets a new 1. That's just me.

    • @throttlebottle5906

problem is, many now have "computers" in the tipm that are on the can bus and operate the relays that way. complete stooge engineered junk, with stooge engineered and lies about component duration and testing or they went through "accelerated testing" in a perfect controlled lab environment to curtail the bad outcome ;)

I have a 2006 pt gt I used c4 pin 18 and 19 . 18 is green wire coming out of ecm and red 19 coming from tpim relay works great . I had the same problem only on start up when warm would it go in limp mode.

I have an '01 PT Cruiser with a 5-speed MTX. My PCM looks nothing like this - it is full of old-school relays and fuses. Is it still susceptible to this "limp home" situation?

If you look up “fail” in a Michigan dictionary it says: “See Chrysler TIPM” Yet another good video and reason to never own a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/FCA vehicle with their incredibly failure prone poorly designed electrical systems.

I'll watch all this later but anyone with a late model Chrysler product should have their own cheap code reader, my PT goes into limp home mode about once a month. I keep my code reader plugged in all the time so when it goes into limp home mode I just pull over and use the code reader (any cheap one will do) to erase the code and start the engine and take off again. Not really a fix but works for a while so it is at least a cheap temp fix.

If I were you I would tell that customer to get ride of it. When you said Crysler PT and Dodge Neon (which they have the same platform) just put a end to its life.

Ivan, you pulled the back cover off the connector, why didn't you back-probe instead of piercing the wires?

You showed a repair on a 2007 pt cruiser in limp mode where you showed the fix by installing a simple old fashioned relay, I am trying to do this exact repair on my 2005 pt cruiser on which the wires you show to hook up to seem to be a different color? Could the 2005 be different? The only wire I can't locate is the last one you attach, yellow/orange I Don't seem to have the yellow/orange. ANY HELP- GREATLY APPRECIATED

2k5 was/is pre TIPM . Just before 7/06, Chrysler, in their infinitely all-knowing minds (LOL) switched to the TIPM as shown here. I know this because my g/f has a 2k6 model and I just had to replace the TIPM.

From what I understand tipm will be gone once all the SGW modules are in. I’ve looked at wire diagrams and notices the ones with the SGW don’t have tipms. Anyone else notice this? Looking forward to part 2 Sunday night 😂

"secure gateway module" aka throw away all your current high dollar tools, because now the data buses will be encrypted and just be digital encrypted noise on them. and you'll have your hand tied trying to diagnose ;) burn chrysler burn, flames and fire higher and higher..
I am very sure there will be a turning point sooner than later, when some smart fellas release easy to make kill all from afar ;)

throttle bottle the Bosch ADS 625 can get into it Luckily through the obd2 they had it as a beta back in March now it’s permanent. I have only tested it on a few. It is kinda crazy I get it for hacking purposes but why block it for shops just doesn’t make sense

i have had a several of these failures...i have piggybacked an external relay to replace the failed TIPM internal relay...the PCM is just a control and the TIPM is just an output relay to load...i use a relay with a diode/resistor on the coil side of the relay and a external fuse for the load side...you might get a code for power output short to power but it does not turn the check engine light on...you could also check the amperage on the transmission side of the TIPM...one of the solenoids could be over current and damaging the internal relay of the TIPM....BUT it is a JEEP...oh i mean chrysler TIPM
