I think critics who work for a publication have an obligation to review movies...Ebert and Kael would not have batted an eye at reviewing anything. Indie critics have the right to pick and choose if they're their own boss.
It depends on if the publication wants them to. Dont get it twisted. No critic, unless they’re super high up, gets to refuse to review a movie. Publications do not look favorable upon that.
John, Jeff, It's not OK we got whipped. I've had lifelong guilt, shame, trauma over these experiences. I dislike people talking about it casually like it's some point of pride. Did it make me tougher than some who weren't abused? I suppose in a way yes, but at what cost? It forever altered the relationship I had with my boomer dad (I'm a millennial), he became my abuser. My worst trauma as a child occured within my family from someone I was supposed to love & trust. He eventually calmed down, became someone I am fortunate to have in life, supported me in ways I honestly don't feel I even deserve, and wants me to be happy. I love my dad I'll say 90% but will always reserve 10% hate for him dt his temper and the emotional/physical abuse I experienced as a child. Idk maybe I'm built differently, more sensitive, and other kids wouldn't have been as affected as I was. It's a very triggering topic for me if you couldn't tell.
Have you done your therapy? That’s what helped me let go of my anger and hatred towards him. My Dad was a super sensitive guy who endured and incredible life of hell before I was born. He didn’t have the emotional vocabulary to understand how to deal with a sensitive kid. He saw it as weakness because people saw his sensitivity as weakness. In understanding him, I understood myself and I was able to forgive him and let it go. We apologized to each other about everything a week before he died from cancer. It was cathartic and life changing. I hope you get full closure one day for yourself.
@@JohnRochaSays thanks for the thoughtful, empathetic reply Rocha. I've been in & out of therapy but never thought to use it that way (to forgive). You've given me something to think about. I'm glad you were able to have that convo with your dad before he passed.

I hope your father has done or will do the same. It helps to move along the forgiveness. And remember, forgiving doesn't mean that you accept and are okay with what they did. It just means that you are strong enough to let it go and be the bigger person which will help you in life.

My thoughts on the 'Am I Racist?' hoopla... 1. People absolutely have a right to their opinions. People have a right to watch or not watch what they want. They also have a right to have opinions about things they haven't watched. I think it's ignorant and ill-informed, but people still have that right. 2. Jeremy was very objective in his review of the film. People should judge him on that rather than doing what everyone else did which was ignore it. And doesn't he have the right to earn a living like everyone else? I give him credit for tackling it. Personally, I think the silence is deafening. Critics clearly don't want to review it because A. They choose not to for personal reasons or B. They are afraid to because of what is happening to Jeremy Jahns and others. I see no other way to explain a movie that is doing very well at the box office with "the people having spoken" as you said.
@@JohnRochaSays I get that. Agreed.
Yet he didn’t review holdovers
@@tjk3430 You have to forgive. It will eat you up inside if you don't. Trust me on that. That process never ends and will be one you will have to repeat in life many times. Hope you can find your way to that understanding in your own time and when you're ready. It helped that my father took responsibility for his failings and was genuinely devastated over it. I hope your father has done or will do the same. It helps to move along the forgiveness. And remember, forgiving doesn't mean that you accept and are okay with what they did. It just means that you are strong enough to let it go and be the bigger person which will help you in life.

What the both of you need to get a grip on and enough with the cynicism with animation…THE MOST ARTISTIC AND CREATIVE MEDIUM has been treated like shit for the past decade and to me I can care less if ‘they knew or not’ because from their accounts it happened plan as day and this really goes back to the spider verse working conditions as well and that tone deaf Amy piscal quote witch to this day made me loose lots of respect for her; to witch Jeff loves to gravitate towards because he can give a rats ass about how artists are treated and even animators that went to school and colleges and even some self taught themselves to break into this industry where they can follow their passions and set food on the table for their families and then they can’t do that..NOOO and that’s why TAG and all the guilds associated with animation are protesting and fighting for a better deal of how they are treated for better conditions and pay and especially ai because that will fuck over everyone but I can just see you two on your preversble high horses witch to me feels like it’s coming from a place of ignorance. #istandwithanimation

“Jeremy is not a racist person and has never done a racist thing is his life”
-John Rocha
Also John Rocha less than 10 seconds earlier: “Now the blackface stuff he did 11 years ago, that bothers me”
So you call Jeremy out for something he did 11 YEARS AGO (enough time from him to learn from his mistake and better himself) but then say he’s not a racist person. Come on man
First of all, these words are complete and utter misquotes and you’re an ass to LIE to anyone reading your comment.
I said “I’ve never seen him be racist to anybody…and that he’s too lazy to be racist” which takes a lot of effort. I did not say “he’s never done a racist thing in his life”.
Ya see, f**kers like you are why people can’t have discourse in this country anymore. YOU are the problem. Not Jeremy Jahns. You lie and misquote to make a point rather than tell the honest truth and debate from that perspective. He’s not racist for reviewing that movie. And it’s foolishly stupid to imply that he is.
Very fair. I apologize for jumping to that so quick. You did make numerous great points throughout the discussion. I do have a tendency to comment early sometimes so I am sorry. Jeremy Jahns is my favorite TH-camr of all time (basically my Roger Ebert) so I was taking up for him cause he’s been getting lots of hate and you were also taking up for him too. I never meant any harm, or hate or to start anything. I genuinely commented this not expecting any replay and I’ll admit I got overly passionate because as a movie review of 11 years seeing Jeremy Jahns get all this hate saddens me. Jeff is the reason I tune into this show
My thoughts on the 'Am I Racist?' hoopla...
I think all this does is bring it more to the forefront that Hollywood exists in a different world than the rest of the country.
What is happening to Jeremy?
"The rest of the country" is painting with a broad brush.
