Yes, you'll notice the speed improvement in the Retina model when working in LightRoom if you work with fairly high res image that are 10 megs or larger.
Lisa Gade, you are perhaps the one of the most interesting technology reviewers on TH-cam. You videos are long, but they don't have any nonsense in them. It's really cool how you seem to answer the myriad of questions a consumer might have. I have been lost looking through the different playlists on your channel and a thought came to my head. I declared that I would like every video you have posted. I'm starting with the "Popular Uploads" page, however, I don't think I can finish what I started. Liking 23 of the videos in this playlist has done a number on my right index finger. LOL! So I'm just gonna settle on subscribing to you. Keep up the EXCELLENT work. =D
I work at Apple as UI architect and developer. I use MacBook Air 13 for everything from design, development to watching Multiple HD videos simultaneously. Very pleased with its performance, battery life & portability. Best designed laptop ever. My only other device is iPhone 5.
I have the MacBook Air 2013 Max Specs. I would agree with you with Mavericks and Haswell Air runs faster then any mac that doesn't have Marvericks and Haswell. I do internet marketing for local businesses I use Adobe software all the time Photoshop, Dreamweaver, FinalCut Pro, Xcode, Python 2.7. I do everything on my MacBook Air now. Its way faster then my Mac Pro Desktop and that thing has 32GB Ram. The Haswell and SSD is what makes the Air so zippy and fast. Air Is the best laptop hands down. The Design on the Air is the future of laptops
No, there really is a significant difference in computational capability between Intel's mobile and ultramobile CPUs. If you run tests like computing Pi and other CPU intensive tasks, you'll see the difference. But as I said, many folks don't need all that power. Then again, there are some who need the quad core in the 15" Retina MBP-- that's why there are different models to meet different needs.
I think that someone who uses his computer for computer intense work should buy the pro. Others, like me, need to air. Its not that powerfull but it is fast and portability is damm good on this one.
Wow! Great video! This is the first review that goes beyond the descriptions turn of the displays. I was given specific information, price comparison and I love that you demonstrated the sound quality. I've made my decision on my next Mac! Thank you.
Great comprehensive review on both laptops. I had just gotten the newest Air in October... I feel that was the right choice given this information and how I use it. Wonderful job highlighting all the features!
Brilliant work there!! Very good review.... I read at least a dozen articles before watching this and it sums up all that I had read at various places!!
Just bought the 13" macbook air and have no complaints whatsoever. It was everything i expected. It was on sale at best buy for $950 and got the student discount which took off an extra $150. Very solid and reliable computer.
I love my Air and it is very speedy and light. The only thing that is really different is the screen and a few ports. And I Promise the display is not bad at all! It is very good! Don't let the "hype" on retina fool you! The Air is a really great laptop!
EvilChief Gaming no it's not LOL. what do you know about computers. I am a professional programmer and I have built many many many pc's. Trust me the macbook air is very identical to the pro when talking about performance. Oh and plus I know that this doesnt matter, but the air is 10 times sexier looking :)
I have and I can tell you, you can't go wrong with either. The MacBook Air is soooo good for travel! The battery is amazing. The MacBook Pro can really give you that computing power :) They all have good stuff
great comparison. one question, have you been able to see a significant difference in the speed of the two. i am looking to get the air with an additional 4gb of memory (only $100 more), making it 8gb. I realize the processor is significantly less than that of the pro. but when testing out both machines, I couldn't really see a significant difference in speed. I do some simple video editing and photoshop. couldn't really see a significance difference of speed between the two with these programs. would love to hear your thoughts! thanks in advance!!
do you multtask on laptop ? if yes i might wanna go with pro otherwise air because thts where processing power is required also if u r into coding then air is a big no !!!
The Pro really isn't as much more powerful as the clock speed or this video would indicate, if you look at real tests. This is because both of them are hitting the turbo clock more than its base clock in most situations, minimizing the gap between them. Only with heavy use on both cores and the GPU would you see the Air throttle more.
Too many people rely on those tests too much. Numbers are one thing, but it's only until you actually start to do the work on these machines, that you see where they differ. The pro is definitely more powerful than you seem to think it is. In relation to the air, and not.
SheepdogColumbus I'm open to that possibility. What are your experiences? Do you mean for longer loads where thermal limits start getting hit? I'm likely getting one of these two soon, I was curious how the Air would hold up over a sustained load.
I've had almost everything apple has put out, from the Powerbooks to the the pros and iMacs, from the G4's to G5 to Core two duo to the... Well, my first i7 is on the way. My experience is that, in any Mac, better is always better, if you get my drift. Numbers may show a small increase that may seem insignificant to people who are obsessed with data. But that small number translates to a better work environment in real world tasks. I believe that's what this nice lady is trying to get across, without really stressing it, as to not turn this video into a selling point FOR the Pro. She's trying to stay balanced, in other words. The real question is, as she also states; What do YOU need it for? I'm a producer. I use professional music software and plugins. The air would surely work just fine for most of what I do. The lower end 13" pro would work fine for almost all of what I do, and the higher end would just be more convenient and give me extra space to push my work further. If you're not the type of person who'd notice the difference, then you probably don't need the best one. I'm going to use an analogy you may not understand, but in the gun world and car world, small numbers seem like crap on paper, but when utilizing the upgrade that's needed, it's a huge difference. So I can spend a couple of hundred dollars on a new better barrel, and most would notice the increase in accuracy, but I can order a slightly lighter trigger, and people who don't shoot much would probably shoot the same. People who compete would be very happy with that small increase in trigger weight. Just like a quarter inch in arm length can do a lot for a boxer. It's the same in any aspect in life. Numbers always underestimate the real advantage that only shows when they are put into practice.
tipoomaster BTW, the air would hold up fine for a lot. I'm not sure what you need it for, but for most folks the air will do. If you're pushing to the point where thermal limits are holding you back, you NEED something else, or you're being careless with how you're managing your work. I see people complaining about photoshop, all of the time. I look at their Mac and they have all kinds of other apps that they haven't even used that day, open. Sometimes it's as easy as closing crap you're not using. Other time's it's as simple as a ram upgrade, or going from disc drive to SSD, or just messing with preferences, but these things aren't simple until you learn what you need to do to manage what you're doing.
SheepdogColumbus For my workload, the best managed environment would still have a lot going on as I require virtual machines running, packet tracers, maybe an IDE, etc. In my experience 8GB or more RAM is a must, but small increases of processor performance not as much. My concern would be if the Air can consistently hit its turbo boost,or if it would throttle back eventually after many minutes or hours of load. If they're both at turbo most of the time I need them to be, the difference is small, but if one throttles back the turbo before the other, that's a much larger difference as their base clocks are much more different than their turbo clocks.
Great review as usual very informative... Hope u a do a review of the new 7000 series laptop launched by dell! Really feel the all alinoum design on that is great!
Hi Lisa :) On The Verge they said on Geekbench there wasn't a big difference as in the overall performance. Seeing the air has a weaker ULV cpu that confused me.. What's your opinion on that?
Damn, I wish so much the screen was matte on any of the Macs, then I would've bought it without a second thought, but I just can't work with a glossy display
Could you do a "best of" video? Say a recap of this years laptops, based on price ranges and what would be best for certain people, like my friends shopping for a gaming laptop, I need something I can record and edit music on.
* also the battery in the air should theoretically last longer as it would take longer to reach the 1000 average charge cycles so you have a little longer before facing the cost of a battery change.
MacBook Pro retina is better simply because of the display and the ports. It's not "thick" by any means. It's smaller than most computers/laptops. I MacBook retina and haven't looked back.
clo09d well you should look back or actually take a glimps into the future. In the future those "ports" arent't important and plus they are the same on the air except it doesnt have an HDMI port, but you can also buy an adapter. Generally speaking the pro is pretty thick and heavy. I am a pro programmer and I have built many many pc's. Trust me the pro wont performe that much better.
+CodingTuts In reality, in a creative environment you need these ports on a daily basis. Cloud access is maybe good for someone who browses the net and sits on Facebook, but art students for example do need to stick things in all the time, hence the new Mackbook for example is not for them. Macbook Pro is an industry standard. End of it.
East end oh I don't know what I was talking back then :DD I actually went on buying the 15 inch macbook pro and it is freaking awesome. Light, thin, great performance and 10/10 :DD
+CodingTuts Ha! I guess we can always change mind. Loads of people shows that irrational hate towards Apple, but to be honest, I looked into other options and all the laptops I fancied cost the same as MacBooks. SSD drive is a must for me. Decent, bulletproof design too. The only mistake I made was buying an upgraded Macbook Air, as I do most work on an iMac. Now I regret it and I think I might swap it for a Pro with Retina.
Which of the two Machines would you recommend for a chemical engineering graduate student? I might have to run some Windows computation simulation softwares in future
Macbook Air 13" Haswell, 1.3 i5 gets up to 15 hours on Mavericks. I notice you said 11 hours, which is underplaying it. 13 hours easily, from first-hand experience (med brightness).
I have to be honest--I was tempted by the extra power of the Pro for making youtube videos in iMovie. Since I am editing full-HD video for my channel, I thought maybe this power would help. BUT I am only doing this stuff twice a month, or maybe three times a month. So to spend the extra money would be pointless for me, because the Air handles iMovie fine. If I was doing iMovie work all the time, like every day, than by all means I would get the Pro, but since my channel isn't that large yet, video editing isn't my number one thing to do with my MacBook, so the Air works great for me.
I am going to be studying computer science ( focusing on graphic designing ) in college and I was wondering which would be better a 13" MacBook pro or a 15" MacBook pro ?
Given how small and light the Macbook pro has become, how it's battery life had improved, and how its price has come down, I'd guess that for most people it's a better choice than the air; you're getting that retina screen and improved processing power for not much of a sacrifice. That said, I got the Air myself, as I use older software that doesn't play well with the retina, and I'm very happy with it so far.
Incredible.... She knows all that and yet my mum doesn't have a clue of what Bluetooth is
U tryin to say this Lady is old? 😅
That video was SUPER DUPER
Yes, you'll notice the speed improvement in the Retina model when working in LightRoom if you work with fairly high res image that are 10 megs or larger.
If you cut out all the Super Dupers, this video is only 10 mins long!

Either would be fine for a journalism major. No need for a 15" unless you prefer a larger display.
I have been looking for reviews from last 2-3 days, and watched several video's,, this is the best I have seen. Thank you!
What a great review! Super detailed, fast talking, and answered all my questions!

Thanks for the video, Lisa. You helped me out a lot!!
Such a great, comprehensive review. Thanks!

Thank you for such great review! Very comprehensive and very objective.
great review!

You can buy a film that goes over the screen so the display in not glossy.
These displays are nothing like the old macbook pros however. They have really cut down as far as glare goes.

Pls do a review on MacBook Air vs the standard MacBook Pro
can you do a review of the 15 inch retina with the dedicated video card?
How noticeable is the resolution difference between the air and pro?
I have to be honest--I was tempted by the extra power of the Pro for making youtube videos in iMovie. Since I am editing full-HD video for my channel, I thought maybe this power would help. Hey Lisa, I got the 13 inch MBP with 16gb of ram, 2.6 ghz processor and 512gb flash storage. You think I made a good choice?
I am going to be studying computer science ( focusing on graphic designing ) in college and I was wondering which would be better a 13" MacBook pro or a 15" MacBook pro ?
Given how small and light the Macbook pro has become, how it's battery life had improved, and how its price has come down, I'd guess that for most people it's a better choice than the air; you're getting that retina screen and improved processing power for not much of a sacrifice. That said, I got the Air myself, as I use older software that doesn't play well with the retina, and I'm very happy with it so far.
very good review
Thanks nice review!
I bought the MacBook Air based on this review and I’m still using to today. Time for an upgrade soon.
are you planning a review of the new xps15 ?
