Mike Whitehead thanks. But I got the 15 highend version after all. It was on sale and I did like the extra screen size.. I got it for a really good deal .. and it's a beast, the computers now a days don't seem to slow down like in the past... like you said.
Is there an specific reason why you chose 256Gb instead of 128Gb? I'm planning on using mine for basic stuff so I wonder if 128Gb is enough. And no I do not save a million pics/vids nor am I going to play games with it...
On paper, this is exactly the kind of machine that I want, but when I go to the store to see them in person, I prefer either the 13" Air or the 15" retinabook. It has neither the portability of the former nor the usability and UI comfort of the latter.
Danijel Turina I have the air and I'm thinking of upgrading to the pro. I filled up the 128gb on my air in just a few months, so make sure you get the 255gb. The air is a really fast and good computer, so it will do probably everything you need. The reason I want to upgrade is for the more memory and I figure I might as well just jump up for the retina and a little more power (that I don't feel I really need)
ConquerCollin I have a 2010 Air model with 256 gigs, and honestly, it's the best laptop I ever had, and I come from the IBM T40 series which was quite good. This thing looks underspec'd on paper but in reality, everything is fast and I'm immensely productive with it because I use a lot of shell scripts like I did on Linux - on a Windows machine I need to run a virtual Linux box which is not the most elegant way to run things.
Danijel Turina From what you say i would suggest the 13 air for you. You dont seem to need the power of the pro models and to be honest few people do. Get the super thin air which is a bit more portable and has crazy battery life. Who doesnt love battery life really.
I really enjoy your reviews, always very thoroughly and honest. It's been a long time since I subscribed to someone. But you got my subscription. Thanks for all of your reviews!
I was trying to figure out it was thinner than MacBook mid 2012. This answered my question, thank you! All the other videos none of them really could show me in depth like this ur gr8!
Watching this video in 2022 on my 2013 Macbook Pro 13". Still my go-to daily computer. I've dropped this computer many times, got liquid on it in many places. It survied a car wreck while sitting in the back seat. Which I broke bones in and all the mac suffered was dents and a bent frame also the screen lost a few pixels. Overall this has been the best money I have ever spent on anything in my life. Hands down I got my moneys worth plus more. This Mac hasn't quit on me yet and gonna use it untill it tells me its time to move on. Thank you Apple.
Just reading your message in 2024 and I’ve just brought myself the 2013 MacBook Pro 13 inch , just to take with me when I’m working away so I can watch Netflix movies and just do some bits and pieces like read emails Facebook and bits like that from reading what you have wrote. It seems a sturdy little machine even if it’s outdated and not supported anymore. Hopefully it can still serve me well !
Hi, this is one of the best reviews I have seen. I don't want to start any "man" "woman" discussion. But ALL of the male reviewers should learn from you! You have showed all aspects which are important to the buyer! Great, good job! Best regards from Munich (Germany)
I used to hate apple but my friend bought a non-retina display before school started and i have fallen in love with macbooks. I have now ordered a rMBP with fully upgraded RAM and processor! IMO i think it is totally worth the money. Apart from the obvious advantages (battery/build quality/durability/power/etc) it has sooooo many other advantages linked with track pad and internal softwares with will save you a lot of time. And i am pretty sure that 90% people dont know all of those advantages.
The best laptop in 2013, phenomenal battery life that lasts 2days with light usage(e.g.. Day 1: unplugged at 10am , web browsing ,youtube, iTunes movies, FaceTime . slept at 11pm. Day 2: start web browsing at 9am, use of HDMI output to TV for 2hrs ,more web browsing & youtube. @ 5pm battery is at 10%. All with brightness set at 3bars & backlight key at 1bar.
I just purchase the Macbook Pro Retina 8gb 256 gb from Best Buy with all the student discounts and with me spending over 500-1000 every time i get a chance to go in there I walked out with it from $1310 with taxes. Awesome computer. I will be programming a hell of a lot more and the notifications helps out a lot when i need to keep update instead of jumping between LinkedIn and others sites.
just got the 13 inch macbook pro with retina display with 8/256 and i'm really happy with it. i'm going to be a freshmen and I got a student discount when i bought the lovely laptop and also got a $100 gift card along with this purchase. it's such a good laptop and i'm so satisfied with it. (but then again i'm pretty biased when it comes to apple products. haha)
Always enjoy your reviews Lisa. This one didn't disappoint. Hopefully, you can do a follow up on this machine on things like battery life, benchmarks, and real world performance.
Thank you Lisa. I ordered mine after watching Mobile Tech Review. You focused on the most crucial details and gave great information. It helped a lot!!
It's beautiful! I'm buying it this weekend. I currently have a 2010 MacBook Pro and it's just not fast enough anymore. I use it for my YT videos, so iMovie, and for school work. I think this mac would be just fine.
I am sure someone else responded since it has been a month but as you know the late 2013 model does not have a disc reader. I believe the 2012 macbook pros were the last models with them. Apple is really encouraging (or forcing) it's users to go to downloadable installs and to use cloud services rather than physical media and software. Many Mac users have external disc readers that connect via USB but for $1400 that on the Macbook already, that can be tough to swallow. I personally haven't used a disc in years, I use cloud and SDXC cards but I understand your position. Checkout Amazon for external drives, you can find some fairly cheap. Are you and your wife enjoying them?
Great review - you really answered some of my questions. Thanks for talking so fast - that really saved time and allowed more information to be presented in the video.
You are definitely right Those apple engineers are just the best in the business when it comes to building laptops Would be awesome to see their take on the 2-in-1's introduced by Microsoft and Intel
Thank you for this review and the detail you provided. I'm looking at the 13" Air and 13" Pro right now, and so the weight and size stats are very helpful. Also good to know that the CPUs, while both being i5s/i7s, are different. I figured something about the CPU in each was different given their different normal operating speeds but their "turbo" speeds are the same so I figured it wasn't such a big difference. This review pretty much tells me I should get the Pro for my needs.
I just recently got the retina MBP 13". Before buying it I read and watched a lot of reviews. I'm quite surprised that no one mentioned how bad the speakers are on this machine! The low quality is one thing, but the worst part is when you're using the speakers (for music or simply watching a video); you can feel the vibrations from the sound on the machine's body. This really makes me wanna get a 15" instead, which has it's speakers on top of the body instead of on the sides; right next to where you hands rest when typing.
Yeah, on one hand I thought that it was some kind of error on my machine, since I hadn't noticed anything like it when I tried out the machine at different stores. But at the same time; I wouldn't be surprised if it was just a side effect to the thin body. But I'll definitely look into it. Thanks man!
Yes you can. The RAM is soldered onto the motherboard, but the flash memory is not. You remove one screw and you can pop it out. It's step #6 on the iFixit "MacBook Air 13" Mid 2013 Teardown".
Mac = design + simplicity + stability + better support + high quality components + longer life span + better OS + great battery life + Great software + Multi touch gestures + better security PC = Games + Umm... Games. -,- What do you think?
Most of that is opinion or has so many variables it doesnt matter design- you may like the design another may not longer life span- it depends and any computer can break at any moment and iv had macs last longer than a pc and iv had pcs last longer than macs software - opinion -better security that false sense of hope has gotten me virus on my old macbook better support- depends who you buy your pc from high quaility components- good quality laptops have good parts like a razer blade or aorus x7 (if you mean desktop than quality goes to pc because you are allowed to decide but thats not a fair point here)
Hey, Thank you VERY much for that review!! I wasn't really sure to buy or not to buy that beast, cause i've got a late 2011 MBP and the display is completely broken.. You gave me a great impression, and i think im gonna buy one :)
Excellent review! I went with the 8GB / 256 Flash and I love it! Did a student discount for $100.00 off. I've been old of college for 20 years. :) Thumbs way up! Thank you. Saved to my favorites.
Because 99 percent of people these days don't need a cd drive. All it does is add weight, increase size, and takes up space that could be used for more battery. Most laptops are ditching the it anyway.
Great review, very in depth and informative which is great because it's nice to have all the facts before splurging on such an expensive laptop. Thank you!
For such a minimal price diff, I'd definitely get the Retina over standard MacBook Pro unless you've found a deep discount at a store. Apple's not discounting the base 13" non-Retina.
Lisa, Since the weight and thickness of this laptop is not too far from what we had in mac book air. I wonder which one is worth investing? Air would seem pretty useless compared to this?
lisa, you do a great job at reviewing all of these devices from phones to tablets and laptops.. but what do you use for each. which are your personal devices?
I'm new to your channel. Great video! This was incredibly helpful, filled with tons of useful information which I otherwise didn't know! I appreciate the compactness of the narrative too -- succinct on each important area without repeating content.
Would you say this macbook runs hotter than the previous generation 13" MBPr as they only put one fan in this model compared to last generations 2. I'm upgrading from an old 2008 aluminium macbook which gets uncomfortably hot even just on youtube sometimes. You mentioned in the video that they are very good heat-wise now so what is your opinion? great video as always! I've been waiting anxiously for an in-depth review of the new macbook so this was great!
Hey!, i'm photographer too but i also use it for editing videos. And i have to tell you, the retina display is just AMAZING, that resolution for editing is really awesome, i just love it. But i recommend you the 15 inch MacBook Pro, Believe me, thats display worth every cent :D
I took my Macbook Air 2013 back to Best Buy and bought this. Now I'm happy... The Air was very nice, but the display was a real let down for me. Thankful that I get 45 days to return things at Best Buy. Take care.
Good points, but it really comes down to a couple points. How much will you benefit from the extra cpu power and/or retina display? The macbook air has a "gimped" haswell cpu while the pro has a full fledged mobile cpu, which is essentially a gimped version of the desktop cpu but I digress. The high resolution on the display also allows you to configure more workspace than the non retina. Ultimately, you just need to compare the features and ask yourself how they will benefit you.
Very great! other videos don't explain much, But however you gave all of us the right information and very detailed facts and info as well! Bravo! on a fantastic video!
hey! i was wondering if the upgrade of processor is worth it? like would i notice a big difference at all? if so, where would i notice the difference> thanks!
Your reviews are always great. I was thinking of buying the top priced 13" and upgrading the processor to i7 because I like playing games (mostly SimCity), but you wouldn't recommend this?
Excellent reviews. I just bought this in used, mint condition for my casual needs ( retired RN). I also have 4 Th. generation iPad. My husband has new HP desktop. I like to do Art, music( singing) & photography. Can you attach an external CD player? I assume that I can attach this to my ZED mixer, which connects to 2 Bose L1 compacts. My group perform gratis in ECF, CCRC...currently using karaoke player. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you, Jeanne
The last generation rMBP had a retina display, not a 1280x800 one. It also had an SSD, not an HDD. Perhaps you should be looking on the Apple website, rather than Amazon.
I have the 1st generation 15" retina MBP and love it. It's super fast, the battery last forever and I have yet to run into anything that I want to run, that I can't do on my MB. Remember, worst case scenario you can always boot in windows mode if you really need windows (which I rarely do).
Thanks for the review, it really helped I was going to go for the none retina but you've convinced me and made me realize that I should go for the retina thanks ^_^
Hey Lisa, would you recommend this macbook for a hobby photographer, or do I really need to go for the more expensive 15" variant just for the quad core? I'm tempted to buy the 13" macbook pro but I'm just afraid that the dual core might not be powerful enough in 5 years time. I love your reviews btw :)
Thank you for another great video. Your reviews are usually very thorough, easy to follow, and professional. If I could I would hit the Like button over and over again. :-)
To put things into even better perspective. The 5.5 hour battery test for the Samsung was under test conditions that gave the 2011 13 inch MBP 8.5 hours of battery life. This means the test was very, very light. That MBP gets only 6 hours under a more reasonable mobile test. The 2012 rMBP gets 6.6 hours under these conditions. We'll probably see almost 8 hours out the 2013 version, compared to maybe an optimistic 3.5 hours from the Samsung. This also seems to jive with the Amazon reviews.
hi! i would like to know if the macbook pro 13" ( $1299) can run autocad or programms like that? im thinking in buying one for my studies. (industrial engineering). Which other ultrabook, mac, etc would u recommend :D
I used both these machines. I have to agree to most of what she has mentioned. Maybe I should write a small opinion about these two machines as well. Hopefully a user opinion of these two machines helps?
Haven't had that problem with ours but I've seen the Apple forum discussion, which sounds like a USB driver issue that Apple could fix with a software update.
hi lisa very nice video but i would like to know if you can do a heat test to know if the new macbook 15 heat as the old macbook 15 or heat less when you play or edit video ? take care :D
They do once a year. I got $200 off my MacBook Pro 13 inch non retina and the retina did not have a discount comparable. It was a back to school price.
Mesomorph85 more or less, yeah. and they're also quite reflective. but the retina MacBook pros reduce the glare more than the standards or the MacBook airs. c:
Probably the best Mac ever released.
Bought the one with 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM. Fucking lovely computer.
I'm planning to buy the same one. :D
Has your comp slowed down since you got it to the point where u wish u would have gotten the 15 inch quad core?
Nope. While I do like the 15 inch, it's a bit too heavy and big for me.
Mike Whitehead thanks. But I got the 15 highend version after all. It was on sale and I did like the extra screen size.. I got it for a really good deal .. and it's a beast, the computers now a days don't seem to slow down like in the past... like you said.

I have the 256 GB version of this, and it is amazing!!! Recommended to anyone, trust me, you won't be disappointed!!
I still enjoy using this Mac book in 2019
Muhammed Sey are u able to update to the latest model
On paper, this is exactly the kind of machine that I want, but when I go to the store to see them in person, I prefer either the 13" Air or the 15" retinabook. It has neither the portability of the former nor the usability and UI comfort of the latter.
Well, that's the point, it sits between air's portability and 15's performance.
Well, from the reviews I saw, I don't think it actually outperforms 13" Air, at least not by much. It's just thicker and has a better screen.
Danijel Turina I have the air and I'm thinking of upgrading to the pro. I filled up the 128gb on my air in just a few months, so make sure you get the 255gb. I use the first gen 15" MacBook Pro Retina at work and a Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus for my on the go machine. The tablet changes weekly!
Watching this video in 2022 on my 2013 Macbook Pro 13". Still my go-to daily computer. I've dropped this computer many times, got liquid on it in many places. I am buying the 256gb and 8gb ram version. This is my first macbook and first non gaming laptop. Hope it's really as good as people say it is.
Did you buy it? What do you think
Yeah. It is fantastic. Great for almost every task except gaming.Stupendous body, stunning screen and very fast. Highly recommend buying it.
just brought this back from the dead... your review is awesome!
I plan on buying a new MacBook Pro Retina for school. Quite frankly, I'm not too fond of PC's.
Great and thorough review Lisa- this prompted me to purchase the middle configuration as my choice. Thanks!
Hi, this is one of the best reviews I have seen. I don't want to start any "man" "woman" discussion. But ALL of the male reviewers should learn from you!
You have showed all aspects which are important to the buyer!
Great, good job!

The best intro review of the MacBook pro.
(but then again i'm pretty biased when it comes to apple products. haha)
Now a year later, do you see the performance dropping?
Can you play a 4K video on 13-inch model? I have an iPhone 8 which shoots 4K with 60fps, and i’m thinking of buying a second hand lap top.
Depends on whether you want to use Mac OS X or Windows 8.

Why not you upload 15" Apple Mac-book Pro Late 2013 Retina with Intel Iris Pro Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB GDDR5 memory???
Great review - you really answered some of my questions. Thanks for talking so fast - that really saved time and allowed more information to be presented in the video.
You are definitely right

I have parallels and windows 8, only when I need it I enjoy the simplicity of the Mac
great call on the "more space" option.. didn't know it had that feature. all of the sudden, that little 13.3 inch screen seemed a WHOLE lot bigger
So excited to have my new rMBP delivered next week!
Yeah! It's really awesome, esp the excellent screen! =]]
Got it yesterday, Nha Le, the screen really is amazing!
Nice! Hope you enjoy it like i do now =]]
The really messed up thing about your reviews is that there are people who actually dislike them :( Great review, as always!
Thanks Lisa, in 20 minutes you squeeze in everything it took me hours to read :D
Wow. Late night treat! Didn't see this review coming so soon!
I just recently got the retina MBP 13". Before buying it I read and watched a lot of reviews. I'm quite surprised that no one mentioned how bad the speakers are on this machine! Yes you can. The RAM is soldered onto the motherboard, but the flash memory is not. You remove one screw and you can pop it out. It's step #6 on the iFixit "MacBook Air 13" Mid 2013 Teardown".
watching this on my 13 inch macbook pro retina mid 2014
Picked up mine over a week ago. I am in love.
Ordered one last night for the 256GB model, getting it on Wednesday!
Mac = design + simplicity + stability + better support + high quality components + longer life span + better OS + great battery life + Great software + Multi touch gestures + better security
PC = Games + Umm... Games. -,-
What do you think?
Most of that is opinion or has so many variables it doesnt matter
design- you may like the design another may not
longer life span- it depends and any computer can break at any moment and iv had macs last longer than a pc and iv had pcs last longer than macs
software - opinion
-better security that false sense of hope has gotten me virus on my old macbook
better support- depends who you buy your pc from
high quaility components- good quality laptops have good parts like a razer blade or aorus x7 (if you mean desktop than quality goes to pc because you are allowed to decide but thats not a fair point here)
crazychainsaw Bad Day ?
I really like the way she speaks , her explanation is very nice !!!!
I love how its base model comes with 2.4 ghz when the Air's base model comes with 1.3ghz
Hey,
Thank you VERY much for that review!!
How's the webcam quality on this new machine???
Thanks for the great review!
Watching it on my macbook pro retina 13" lol
15" Retina MBP (first version) at work running OS X. Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus when not at my desk. Tempted by the Surface Pro 2 though!
One question why did apple never make a internal blu-ray drive for the macbook pros that came with the internal dvd drive???
It all comes down to their philosophy - www.cnet.com/uk/news/apple-bans-blu-ray-from-macs-discs-are-holding-us-back/
Because 99 percent of people these days don't need a cd drive. All it does is add weight, increase size, and takes up space that could be used for more battery. Most laptops are ditching the it anyway.
Great review, very in depth and informative which is great because it's nice to have all the facts before splurging on such an expensive laptop. Thank you!
When the turbo boost in the Air kicks in, the performance is pretty much the same as the 13 Retina
That's one way to look at it. But the thing is, the processor has to be stressed out for it to work, and it doesn't stay like that forever either.
And when the turbo boost kicks in on the Pro, it will be faster again.
I actually did cover battery life. It's pretty good at 8.5to 9 hours.
Loved the review! Very In-depth and much better than the other 'reviews' I've seen of this product on youtube : )))
Is this available at the store now and how to ch3ck if it is a haswell or not?
Also can some tell me what is haswell?
Loves ur video♥♥
is gorgeous i just bought it yesterday beautiful super lightening fast totally recommend it.
For such a minimal price diff, I'd definitely get the Retina over standard MacBook Pro unless you've found a deep discount at a store. Apple's not discounting the base 13" non-Retina.

We will do a smackdown between the latest MacBook Air and this MacBook Pro.
Is it still Worth to buy the retina pro or should you wait for the next gen? When is the next gen coming out?
You could upgrade the SSD drive, and most Ultrabooks and laptops in the 3.5 lb. category lack dedicated graphics.
Would you say this macbook runs hotter than the previous generation 13" MBPr as they only put one fan in this model compared to last generations 2. I took my Macbook Air 2013 back to Best Buy and bought this. Now I'm happy... The Air was very nice, but the display was a real let down for me. Thankful that I get 45 days to return things at Best Buy.
Take care.
great review...was going to buy this but decided to get the 2013 Macbook Air 13" with Core i7, 8GB, 128 Flash Storage(might swap out later)
Nice review as always. The best for display setting is actually equivalent to 1280x800, as the display resolution is 4x that at 2560x1600
Ultimately, you just need to compare the features and ask yourself how they will benefit you.
great review! quick question: what 13" ultrabook do you prefer for this price? if you also want to do a little gaming?
GPU wise, huge improvement, CPU wise the same. Battery life +2 hours and 200$ cheaper? I call that a huge difference.
Cool I'm thinking of getting one for high school, or is windows better for that?
It does. All Apple portables have backlit keyboards now.
Best review I've seen. Will it handle Final Cut Pro x and sims 3 ? Thinking of buying but not sure of its capabilities with these program's.
Very great! other videos don't explain much, But however you gave all of us the right information and very detailed facts and info as well! Bravo! on a fantastic video!
hey! i was wondering if the upgrade of processor is worth it? like would i notice a big difference at all? if so, where would i notice the difference> thanks!
I think Yoga 2 Pro is pretty similar and competitive to this one. It is thinner, lighter, costing less. Can you do a review of the new Yoga?
Lisa , what laptop, phone and tablet do you currently use, there are so many choices , I would like to know what an expert like you use :)?
Your reviews are always great. I was thinking of buying the top priced 13" and upgrading the processor to i7 because I like playing games (mostly SimCity), but you wouldn't recommend this?
Excellent reviews. I just bought this in used, mint condition for my casual needs ( retired RN).
I also have 4 Th. generation iPad. My husband has new HP desktop.
I like to do Art, music( singing) & photography.
Can you attach an external CD player? I assume that I can attach this to my ZED mixer, which connects
to 2 Bose L1 compacts.
I'd really like this but i think the 13" is a bit small.. I want the 15" but its way more expensive... any ideas?
I have the 1st generation 15" retina MBP and love it. It's super fast, the battery last forever and I have yet to run into anything that I want to run, that I can't do on my MB. Remember, worst case scenario you can always boot in windows mode if you really need windows (which I rarely do).
Wow that was quick! I was waiting for this! Awesome review as always
1680 x 1050 res performs as well as the default resolution. It's not heavy lifting for this machine.
Got this back 7 years ago and yesterday it died! WAS MY BEST LAPTOP BUT NOW TO FIND A NEW LAPTOP...! :)
Always as usual great review Lisa. Greetings from the Netherlands😚
hi!
i would like to know if the macbook pro 13" ( $1299) can run autocad or programms like that? im thinking in buying one for my studies. (industrial engineering). Which other ultrabook, mac, etc would u recommend :D
I have a macbook pro mid 2010, is it recommended to upgrade to Haswell 13" macbook pro?
Mesomorph85 more or less, yeah. and they're also quite reflective. but the retina MacBook pros reduce the glare more than the standards or the MacBook airs. c:
