Most Complicated Modern Rolex: The Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller

  • Wei Koh gives us a complete run down of the one and only, Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky Dweller.
    Launched in 2012, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller has, in its eight-year life span, become an object of cult collectability and one of the most desirable modern classic watches around.
    Jay-Z’s got the 18K yellow gold and champagne-coloured dial model, “The Notorious One” Conor McGregor’s got the 18K Everose gold and chocolate-dial model, and even Tom Hardy, one of the finest actors of his generation, rocks the 18K white-gold and ivory-dial model. But beyond its obvious wrist swagger represented by its 42mm case size and 14mm case height, did you know that this watch is the equivalent of a mechanical supercomputer, combining two of horology’s most functional complications, the annual calendar and the GMT function?
    Further, the way the watch has been set up provides unparalleled legibility and clarity when reading the month, date and time for both local and home time. Using an innovative and totally unique Ring Command system that interacts between the rotatable bezel, the winding crown and the movement, the Sky-Dweller is also the easiest and most intuitive-to-use annual calendar around.

    I've been a Professional pilot for 45+ years, military (USMC) , corporate and major airline. I just retired after decades as a B-777 pilot for the worlds largest airline. I purchased my first GMT Master 16750 in Hong Kong in 1983 and it was my one watch for over 30 years. In December of 2019, I purchased a black dial Sky Dweller, again in Hong Kong on a layover. I absolutely love both watches and wear them both on trips. In fact, I wore both on my last to to HKG this Summer. Bottom line, it's the perfect wide body, international airline pilot's watch! Oh, and it fits perfectly on my 7-5/8", 19.3 cm wrist.

      Being into horology, I am a fan of the 2,500 year old Greek Antikythera mechanism which is where I first became aware of the Saros movement, and is one of the things that intrigued me about the Sky Dweller. Photos of my watches at... instagram.com/1955healey100/

      I would agree. The GMT 2 is slightly easier to read the home time IMO. (Full length pointer hand to the outside 24hr bezel vs arrow over the smaller inside 24hr ring.)

      Yes, but the sd gives a month function were as the GMT doesn't. I am laying down my GMT, the SD is far superior.😊

    With respect to the Rolesor or, some parts gold, some parts stainless steel, I believe in addition to the bezel being gold - so are all three hands (hour, minute, & seconds) as well as the boxes around the Lume and the crown at the twelve o’clock position. In other words: all the exposed metal inside the glass is gold - so as to not fade, patina, or age over time. Great explanation and video.

    • @williamumbach592
      @williamumbach592 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope it’s EVERY March 1. This is an “ANNUAL” Calendar and that means it must be adjusted every single year. (Plus adjusted for daylight savings time if you live where you observe that ). Some other brands make a “PERPETUAL” Calendar watch which tracks which year is “Leap” year and corrects for that and therefore need no adjustment usually for a hundred years or so. They usually cost a lot more money than the Skydweller. Hard to stomach this next statement: but I believe you get a lot for your dollar with the Skydweller, whether it’s Stainsteel or Precious Metal.

      @@sypen1 Do you think we fly alone? My airplane holds 350 passengers and most of the time, it's full, at least pre COVID. Each of the big four airlines in the USA flies around 2,500 flights a day, for 10,000 flights just on those four. That's 3.65 million flights a year and a whole hell of a lot of travelers. Translate that to worldwide. Just look at the popularity of the GMT Master for over 65 years, It's a lot more useable than a dive watch where 99.9% DON'T dive, and dive watches are hugely popular. Many of my international passengers are frequent business travelers, and have the money to spent if so inclined. Bottom line, given the fact that the Sky Dweller is near impossible to get, especially the steel blue dial (which is far and above the hardest Rolex to obtain,period), I'd say there is a unfulfillable market for this watch at current production levels.

    I was never a fan of this watch. It always looked huge and rather chintzy when next to other Rolex´s in the display case. I normally love Rolex´s on bracelets, especially the gold ones as the bracelets are great and an all gold rolex for me is something special. Then the other day I saw the latest version on the rubber strap and it has transformed it for me, now the design looks far less chintzy and the rubber seems to make the watch look less huge.

    • @cnaarndt
      @cnaarndt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As far as being huge, it's 42mm X 13.8mm thick, while my Hesalite Speedy is 42mm X 14.1 mm thick! As far as looking chintzy, is the Datejust 41 chintzy too, because the SD is essentially a slightly larger Datejust? Like you, I do love the new rubber straps on this watch.

    • @ianmedium

      @@cnaarndt it’s a funny thing I find, the size of watches, normally I’m not bothered but I just found the extra few mm of this and the 41mm to not work for me as it just seemed a less cohesive design over the smaller 36mm DJ which has the balance, it’s the same with the DD, the smaller looks perfect on my wrist, the larger feels bigger than one of my large case EPSA compressor watches!
      Having said that I also simply love seeing people wear a watch in this day and age so even if something is not to my personal taste I’m still happy someone else gets pleasure from them and heck, they are wearing a watch which makes me happy. One exception to my comment about size is the large platinum DD with baguette bezel and blue dial, now that seemed more subtle ( I know, baguette diamond bezel!!) than a yellow gold large DD with fluted bezel!

      @@ianmedium Thanks for the great reply. In this case, I feel that it is just a matter of proportion. Even though my wrists at 7-5/8" are large, they're not excessively so, however my hands are huge. In fact if a bracelet is sized for my writs, I often struggle to get that bracelet over my hands! That being said, I simply cannot wear any 36 mm Roles or Patek Phillip for that matter. Believe me, with regard to PP I've tried. So would Rolex ever make the SD smaller, say in a 39-40mm size? I doubt it as it would loose some of the legibility of the GMT function. Unfortunately, this makes the watch too large for many potential customers. On the up side, those same folks CAN wear a PP Calatrava… I cannot. Now a PP 5270.. That's another story, but it's the price not the size!

    • @ianmedium
      @ianmedium 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cnaarndt great reply, see, you hit the issue square on. I have a medium sized wrist but small hands, well, short fingers and that’s the problem with some watch styles that are larger, certainly the more dressy styles but the funny thing is some large watches look fine on my small hands. Last week I managed to buy a beautiful plongeur hands vintage Nivada dive watch from the late sixties which is huge by those days standards at 43 mm with a thick steel bezel of 40mm and it looks wonderful even though I have small hands and I realised today that it’s because the lug to lug is short at 44mm!
