I've been watching these ladies for several months now, and they never disappoint. This is a group of individual superstars. You should check out their album.
I saw Senri play twice on my recent trip to Japan. She is incredible…an amazing player that can keep a groove and then pop up with an incredible fill or solo to blow you away. After one show, she and the other performers hung out, talking to fans and signing things. She was so nice and patient with everybody, including me and my poor Japanese. Senri also spent 5 or 10 minutes talking with a high school age girl who came with her parents to see her…she also gave the girl a set of her drumsticks. It was really fun to see and experience.
They are a jazz supergroup because each member was already a well known artist before Senri got them all together, they were originally called 'Senri's Seven' making the 8 of them
The guitar player is having a ball during the sax battle. The tenor sax and the bass are almost as big as the women playing them. The musicians are all great but whoever wrote the arrangement for this gets applause from me too. The drummer is a powerhouse!
Tenor saxophone: Miku Yonezawa. With her group: th-cam.com/video/p93pzxr_JRE/w-d-xo.html Saw Jazz Avengers in Osaka: they burned the house down. Later, Miku Yonezawa in a very small club in Kyoto, maybe 30 seats - it was a religious experience. Jazz scene in Japan is purely amazing, with numbers of talented female musicians. Among the scene: Blue Note Tokyo All Star Jazz Orchestra, led by Erik Miyashiro and anchored by Senri Kawaguchi. Also includes Miho Terachi soprano sax w/Avengers. Jazz Avengers a tribute to drummer led Jazz Messengers w/Art Blakey.
I'm so happy you finally saw them. It's crazy how much I can just copy/paste from my band-maid comments for this band: - Miku is so cute - This bassist could kill me - This is one of the best drummers in the world
From left to right Soprano Sax, 2 Alto Sax and Tenor Sax. So much talent on that stage. Love seeing someone enjoying what they are reacting to. Good Job!
Discovering this band has lad to a non zero amount of rabbit holes on each member of this group. They all have pretty impressive stuff before forming this group. Chizuru the guitarist has some pretty impressive stuff out there when she's not just there to be part of the rhythm section. Also the girl on the tenor sax(the biggest one) is another extremally talented person named Miku.
Miku Yonezawa's albums (the couple I bought) are probably my favourite Jazz albums I own next to Senri's stuff (which I already was a fan of before discovering Japanese rock and metal music with Band-Maid a couple of years ago). Especially her latest album (Delight from 2023) and Exotic Gravity (from 2019) are absolutely fantastic. Also, all of them are fantastic live both with the Jazz Avengers as with their solo projects or other projects in which they work together. I have cought a bunch of their livestreamed shows and they are all fantastic. A couple of other projects to check out with members of this band are 坐音 ZAON (with Senri and Ami, the Soprano Sax player (the small one), Jazz Fusion with traditional Japanese instruments) and Muses (with bassist Juna and a fantastic other Japanese young drummer in Kanade Sato). And obviously Senri's Kiyo*Sen is great as well. Also the slightly related Tokyo Groove Jyoshi (which used to feature Juna Serita on bass and she sometimes still features as a guest) is worth checking out just as her work with blues guitarist Shoka Okubo called "Shoka Okubo Blues Project".
An absolute masterclass. If you aren’t familiar with the bassist Juna Serita, she was in Tokyo Groove Jyoshi for a while. Check out the Tower of Power cover of “What is Hip”. Juna is known as “The Princess of Funk” The Jazz Avengers is a supergroup of epically talented musicians.
Can't remember how many times I've watched this now and still blown away every time. The groove behind the sax solos is just amazing - Ami and Miku are killer on their solo parts. Will definitely send some Juna related requests your way Ryan.
Yes!!!I just found these ladies about 2 months ago and they literally are the Avengers of Japanese Jazz. Every single one is a legend in the the Jazz/fusion music scene. I immediately latched onto Miku's Tenor sax sound and that of Ami Nakazono (soprano sax) +1 for the other comment mentions of TGJ (Juna's previous band) and Muses- which Juna also plays for and and is lead by the incredible Rie a.k.a. Suzaku. you'll soon find out that these ladies have historically featured appearances in each other's projects too! I can't wait till you review another one of their sets!
True supergroup. Juna Serita is also in the the group Muses, with Rie a.k.a Suzaku, who is a monster jazz/fusion shredder. They recently adopted the name but have been playing together for about four years. Check out their covers of Jeff Beck and their original stuff--it's phenomenal.
Juna Serita is the original bassist for Tokyo Groove Jyoshi. Miho Terachi, alto sax, was in the Sax Triplets. Chizuru, guitarist, I first saw when she was a guess player with Tokyo Groove Jyoshi. Check out the video 'Senri's 7' and you can find out more about them...
I love all of them so much, I grew up playing piano, alto sax and tenor sax. Miku is my favorite tenor sax player, she's so awesome. there's no weak link in this group, they're all super stars. WaKaNa on the alto sax right next to Miku is also another fav. of mine. Any one of them could carry a live performance, together they are amazing. You may also like Tokyo Groove Jyoshi and Muses. flutter-tonging is one of the hardest things to do, it requires that you can roll your R's which I could never get down as a sax player. Miku's tone, breath control and tonguing is out of this world. ahhh. I have been listening to them for almost a year now. IDK why I did not think you'd be into Jazz. Senri put this group together, many of them like the rock scene also play with other groups; have their own projects, etc. amazing music culture there. I am so jealous. btw, there's a LOT more where that came from, there are more solos in other pieces etc. you will love a lot more than this if you enjoyed this song.
This is 🔥. And what makes it even cooler is when you think about how these solos are improvised so they're making it up on the spot. It feels so good as a player when you do that and it comes out really well. There's a risk involved so it can be scary but there's nothing like that feeling when you play something awesome.
In my youth (I'm 70 years now), I offen went to jazz concerts, but then turned to rock etc. Because of these Ladies I discover it new, I think. Senri is over the top, but to me they are all oustanding. At least doesn't matter what kind of music, if the artists are as good as these wonderfull femals.
They are amazing. I almost cry anytime I watch them. The way they enjoy to play together...and how hard worker they are. Senri kawaguchi, Juna Serita, Ami Nakazono, Marie Takeda, Wakana, Miku Yonezawa, Miho Terachi and Chizuru Segawa. I love them one by one.
Senri's band, The Jazz Avengers have all world class musicians. Each of them a master of their own instruments, including Senri the founder and leader.
Juna is badass. Her latest recording Battlefield is very good. Here work with Tokyo Groove Yoshi is awesome as well. You can tell she really listened to a lot of Marcus Miller with her bass slap approach.
Ahhhh, the incomparable Senri Kawaguchi. Been following her since she was around 8 years old. What a talent! The “stutter things” you mentioned are double and triple tonguing. Very common for brass players but not so much woodwind. And yes, they are friggin hard to do.😊
Ahh, So You are Here too! 😂 Yeah, been following Juna Serita and sooo many other Great Artists she's performed with over the past 4/5 years. She's a BASS Machine!! 🤘
Thanks I couldn’t believe what I was hearing when I first heard them, yes she is bending notes. What a fantastic group, they have been playing separately for years very accomplished musicians have been together about two years.
Hey Ryan. Pleased to see you give The Jazz Avengers a listen. An exceptional group of musicians with, as you've mentioned, Juna Serita and Senri Kawaguchi among it's ranks with each member given a moment to shine. Juna Serita (bass) was also formerly a member of Soramimi alongside Murata Tamu, now in Nemophila. Quite the contrast to see Juna pursue Jazz/Fusion with the Avengers while Tamu chose to go the heavy route with Nemophila. This song could just as easily have been 15-20 minutes in length and I would not have averted my gaze for one second.✌️❤️🤘
The Jazz Avengers have had concerts that sell live streaming tickets allowing you to watch live from wherever in the world the concert is. Can't wait for the next time they do it. I'm in, no matter the cost.
Good to see you discover this amazing band, every one of these women are extraordinary musicians. Next I suggest you check out Kanade Sato's latest project: Muses, also featuring Juna on bass.
This was originally written for tenor sax, trombone and trumpet, with more keyboard; but I much prefer this, though I like the whole of her first album.
Being a tenor sax player, i gotta say i really like the tenor sax players tone. And the stutter thing Graham mentioned sounded like a flutter tongue effect. It's where you touch the reed with your tongue but go past it and then bring your tongue back down. Also it's possible to do a different thing where you just touch lightly on the reed with your tongue so that you can move your tongue faster. Lastly, you can do a double tongue like a trumpet where its more of a "da-ga-da-ga" effect. But i think she did the flutter. One of the alto players sometimes plays tenor and gets a great tone too.
Truly a superstar band. Everybody in this band is a monster in their own right. Look up any of these players and see the different combinations they play with. Always so amazing. I started following Juna about a year ago and have found maybe the best fusion stuff I have ever heard and I have been around a long time. And no you are not wrong! What she does with reeds is almost impossible for most players.
Not only Senri on drums but you got Juna Serita on bass (she was in Soramimi with Tamu Murata). Check out Juna's original "Hunter", live with most of the Jazz Avengers (minus Senri) on her official YT page. You want to talk about a filthy bass line!...Also fun fact about Juna; she's on a journey to master sax, drums, piano and guitar, just as well as she plays bass. She's a phenomenal talent!
That bass line on Hunter is 🔥🔥🔥‼️ It amazes me how young these kids are and the level of creativity and skill they have. I like Juna's stuff in the Jazz Avengers more than the funk stuff but her groove on Hunter is a great compromise between the two imo. She plays that nasty funky line but it's not over the top and still blends in well with the other avengers.
Superstar players each one. Juna the bass player is in any one of 3-5 projects at any given time. Her work in Muses with Kanade Sato and Rie aka Suzaku is Equally Amazing. The Women in Japan definitely have the Lead in Awe inspiring musicianship hands down.
I hope they get to do a world tour and release a live DVD. Their album is cool, but whilst it's well-played as you'd expect it lacks the edge that you can only get in a live jazz performance. (side bar - Juna Serita has played with Tokyo Groove Jyoshi, is also part of Muses (a smaller cooler jazz-fusion ensemble) and is half of Addone with blues singer guitarist and drummer Shoka Okubo . Busy lady.
Juna Serita also has an other project with Shoka Okubo called Shoka Okubo Blues Project. Worth checking out if you haven't already. The Jazz Avengers are quickly growing (especially for a Jazz band) and started adding English to some of their videos. Juna Serita and Senri speak some English, guitarist Chizuru Segawa tried her best as well. I believe some of the others have worked in the US as well for a short while (Juna certainly has), but I don't know how well they speak English. So they have noticed the international interest in them and I have a feeling they are trying to address it. Not bad for what was originally a one-off group for (I believe) a commercial or opening of a building named the Senri 7.
Another great performance and reaction. Before encountering BABYMETAL, my musical interest was more in Jazz. I sometimes go to Blues Alley in DC, but I never knew there was a "Blues Alley- Tokyo"! - same logo, too!
This was day 3 (Jan 8, 2023) of 4 of Senri's birthday bash weekend at the Blues Alley, Meguro City, Tokyo. Got to see day 2 (Kiyo*Sen) live, and Senri dished out her birthday cake after that performance to us (100 or so of us). I was floored by how hard she hits, even harder than Akane, Po! Pound for pound (I think she's 90 lbs wet), she's got to be the hardest hitting drummer in the world. What do I know I play bass, Po! Btw, the next night was TGT. 🦍🍌 Can we say Yokoari, Po!
ARIGATO for the good good choice!! JUNA SERITA is so talented bassist. Please watch her other's band songs ●SHOKA OKUBO BLUES PROJECT(live)-Shoka+Juna+Makotomo ●TOKYO GROOVE JYOSHI(her former band) 「WHAT IS HIP」(MV)(Tower Of Powe coverr)
I've seen Senri Kawaguchi with Juna Serita and Kanade Sato's live. I could watch them all day long and Senri is my No.1 drummer. I've never went to ASTERISM's live like you and I wish to :)
They streamed it as well and I missed it by 1 day (a couple of hours). I didn't realize until it was too late and that's probably still the most dissapointed I am that I missed a live show (maybe close with when I realized tricot came to Belgium when I started to get into them without me realizing). I love both Senri and Kanade Sato for a while now, from before getting into the Japanese rock bands and I have seen plenty of streamed concerts with Juna Serita, she is amazing. I have seen Senri as well (streamed), I am only missing Kanade Sato, but it's just them 3 together that must have been amazing. They released one track of it on yt, but I still am kicking myself for missing the opportunity. Seeing them live at the venue must have been even crazier. Senri is my one my favourite drummers as well overall and makes a good case for being number 1 for me as well.
Following your channel for a while on Japanese metal territory, I am so glad you come into the jazz and jazz fusion world, especially with Senri. That's so cool! If you want to discover more on the band "The Jazz Avengers" I highly recommend the 45 minutes documentary "Senri Seven" (th-cam.com/video/gr72gLTnTZU/w-d-xo.html). And you can also have a look at the amazing "Drumatica" MV from Kiyo*Sen featuring Senri and Kiyomi Otaka on keyboards (th-cam.com/video/Iwb8fo5guxA/w-d-xo.html). Edit: and this amazing live performance in trio is just mind blowing: th-cam.com/video/nrHJoY6RzR0/w-d-xo.html.
No, Kenny G plays Soprano Saxophone. He most likely plays the tenor sometimes as most sax players can play all of them. But Kenny G is mainly a Soprano Sax player.
Well, this is yet ANOTHER overseas CD I'm going to have to buy... My mom loves this kind of jazz music. Also, check out Yoyoka's new jazz tracks that she did in Japan.
Just recorded for a third album. Switches from hard rock on a Tuesday night at the Whisky to cool jazz at the weekend. It's all worth checking out. YOYOKA is 10 years behind Senri.
For sure, I can't speak on the others but I know Senri plays drums from when she was 5 (she is 26 now) including having recorded her first solo DVD when she was 11, she also has been posting videos on yt from when she was really young + she was voted in the top 500 drummers of drummerworld when she was 13 or so. In one of the interview type videos they did on their channel they asked about her hobbies and she said "drums" after thinking for a couple of seconds, she was basically born to play drums. I am sure most of the other musicians in this band are very similar to that, a lot of practicing and just a lot of talent. They basically live for their instrument.
Senri and Juna Serita together are already a killer combo, but these ladies each are amazing on their own. Their whole album is just like this.
I've been watching these ladies for several months now, and they never disappoint. This is a group of individual superstars. You should check out their album.

A really great and enthusiastic reaction video, thank you Ryan.
i love music like this and i like to say TALENT IS TALENT :)

Their album is fantastic, a pleasure for the ears, but it's live when they really shine, it's wonderful to see how much they enjoy playing together.
the album is pure awesome. I love it.
I call this one "Shredding Saxophones" - WOW.
Sitting in a dark smokey music club, sipping on Maker's with 1 cube, listening to this would be heavenly
Yep jazz clubs are like the only place I miss cigarette smoke🚬
Yes!!!I just found these ladies about 2 months ago and they literally are the Avengers of Japanese Jazz. Every single one is a legend in the the Jazz/fusion music scene. And so your Jazz phase begins. Enjoy! Fusion and City-Pop coming soon.
I love all of them so much, I grew up playing piano, alto sax and tenor sax. Miku is my favorite tenor sax player, she's so awesome. there's no weak link in this group, they're all super stars. I saw this wonderful show in here!
These girls are truely amazing😊
Gotta love that on a fricken Monday afternoon 😮❤🎸🎷🥁🎹🎶😎🤘
Ran across them earlier this year. The guitar player is always having a great time. Their first record came out a few months ago. Excellent.
Yes, this is 11 out of 10.
I love them one by one.

juna is one of the best jazz bassists i have seen
Juna is badass. Her latest recording Battlefield is very good. Here work with Tokyo Groove Yoshi is awesome as well. You can tell she really listened to a lot of Marcus Miller with her bass slap approach.
I'm so in LOVE with these ladies. They have renewed my love for jazz/fusion/smooth jazz and given me new appreciations for every aspect of the genres.
This was wonderful.. fun stream
That evening 😁
Ry -- Glad you're back covering Senri. She's got a ton of awesome, diverse YT vids that are worth reacting to.
Ahhhh, the incomparable Senri Kawaguchi. Been following her since she was around 8 years old. What a talent!

Sounds more like a chat than a battle
This is fabulous......
Also it's possible to do a different thing where you just touch lightly on the reed with your tongue so that you can move your tongue faster. So true. Many countries have some amazing women leading the charge musically but Japan is just insane when it comes to quality musicians.
Senri is a drum goddess. The whole band is if course incredible.
Princess of Funk, Juna Serita. Check out some of her compositions; No One or Hunter with Harumo Imai on sax.
Juna is a monster on the bass. Would love for her and Tamu to work together again on a rock\prog\fusion project, now that they have left Soramimi.
The guitarist looks like she had some of those funky Dutch cookies.🤘🥰🤘
Happy to see you cover this! Until J-A I didn't know I would end up having a favorite sax player .... Miku 米澤美玖
Ellas son fantásticas!!!

@@MaartenT Indeed. Juna also has scratch line-ups for her solo projects.
Great band, fantastic sound , reminds me a lot of “Tokyo Groove Jyoshi”
Edit
Of course, Juna is on bass there too
Doh !
yeah thats how I discovered the Jazz Avengers because I followed Juna after she left Tokyo Groove Jyoshi

Wow!! You experienced this night? That's awesome 😎
ARIGATO for the good good choice!! JUNA SERITA is so talented bassist. Please watch her other's band songs
●SHOKA OKUBO BLUES PROJECT(live)-Shoka+Juna+Makotomo ●TOKYO GROOVE JYOSHI(her former band) 「WHAT IS HIP」(MV)(Tower Of Powe coverr)
un saluido a todos los admiradores de esta gran formacion de musikas
Guitar is Chizuru Segawa, a new hero, who recently appears suddenly.
I meet here you again Ryan-san. As you say, I also think this drummer is Senri Kawaguchi .
Hooolllyyy s************t!!!!!!!
Juna did some amazing things with Tokyo Groove Jyoshi in a more funky style.
Been following this band fir a long time. Excellent drummer, not super hard hitting, but very good. They all flow so well together.
Soprano Sax is Ami Nakazono.
Tenor sax is the same instrument that Keeny G plays.
No, Kenny G plays Soprano Saxophone. He most likely plays the tenor sometimes as most sax players can play all of them. But Kenny G is mainly a Soprano Sax player.
@@RobinC63 The silver one?
❤
That is soprano sax, like Kenny G plays
Well, this is yet ANOTHER overseas CD I'm going to have to buy... My mom loves this kind of jazz music. Also, check out Yoyoka's new jazz tracks that she did in Japan.
Just recorded for a third album. Switches from hard rock on a Tuesday night at the Whisky to cool jazz at the weekend. It's all worth checking out. YOYOKA is 10 years behind Senri.
@@andrewplumb6544 Yoyoka is still pretty damn good for being a 14 year old.
Meanest Ladies...
I hear a LOT of practice.
If you wanna hear juna's killer bass again ryan! Check out Tokyo groove jiyoshi What is hip twin bass with rina on the second bass!👍
