  • Another week, another Drumonday. This one is brought to you by our patron Robert K who said this would be a great fit for this series.... and he was more then right. Where has this girl been my whole life? I mean she's three years younger than me and she is a NASTY fusion drummer. I mean good lord. That was incredible. And the bassist too? This was nuts. Y'all are gonna love this.

This young woman’s talent is beyond anything you would expect from a seasoned drummer! Thanks to the patron that requested this, for introducing us to this young talent!

In this video, her age was just 20. Unbelivably perfect even without considering her age. After 5 years of following her, I saw her live last month. Just amazing. Her play showed accuracy, power, groove and all I want to hear from drum play.

The keyboard player, Philippe Saisse, is the same keyboard player you saw on Al Di Meola's Race with the Devil on a Spanish Highway. The Bass player also played with Di Meola.

She actually already was a seasoned drummer back then. This was recorded in 2017, she was around 20 back then, but she recorded her first DVD when she was 11 or 12 years old back in 2008 and released her first solo album in 2013. She has 4 solo albums (this is off of one of her solo albums), 4 albums with a duo (Kiyo*Sen) and has a bunch of other projects (like The Jazz Avengers which people are going to mention) and session work. Most of her projects are in the Jazz Fusion genre. She was also inducted in the top 500 drummers list from drummerworld when she was 13 years old, she was the youngest inductee back then, but an other young Japanese drummer Yoyoyka has surpassed her since then. Senri worked with/learned from the late teacher/mentor/drummer Kozo Suganuma (rip 2021) since she was 8 years old. Edit: again, I should wait until you finish your video before I comment.

Lol yeah I saw she has a TON of different projects with people and yeah she's been around forever! I've done two videos for yoyoka for this series already she is amazing too! But this.. this is a whole new level. The fusion is strong with this one lol

@@L33Reacts An other great young Japanese female drummer is Kanade Sato. She also mainly plays in Jazz Fusion bands like "Ear Candy Jazz Factory" and "Muses", but she now also plays in the Japanese rock band Koiai as well, although I would say her jazz bands show off more of her skills. She also has videos on yt of her playing at a very young age in a mall silencing the crowd or at her mid-teens playing Dave Weckl tracks live. She is 21 or 22 now, so she is in between Senri and Yoyoka as far as age goes. And yes, I agree Senri is a whole new level compared to Yoyoka at this time, Senri is my favourite drummer currently, but don't forget that Yoyoka is half the age of Senri at this point in time and she mainly plays rock and metal at the moment so it's harder to compare. I believe Yoyoka is 13 or so.

Senri Kawaguchi has been one of the top drummers in the world since about the age of 12. She’s 26 now. All the top players want time with her and has recorded with many of the greats. She has a number of excellent jazz fusion albums and is always in 4 or 5 groups / projects at a time. She even plays great hard rock prog fusion as well as straight on jazz. She did a lot of this while she attended college, too!!
I've been following Senri for more than a decade and found Band-Maid through Senri. My list goes something like this: Senri the best all-round drummer - she stands out in any format or music. (Akane the best hard rock drummer); Band-Maid is the best Hard Rock band; The Warning the best original, trio rock band; Hiromi Uehara the best jazz fusion pianist; Yuja Wang the best classical pianist; and, Tatiana Smailyuk from Jinjer the best Metal vocalist -- amazingly, all women!

Senri is insanely good and I'd LOVE to see her do a project with Hiromi because I think she's perfect for that collab. First thing I noticed is how sometimes she looks to be sitting farther away from her kit than some but a drummer friend of mine pointed out that she was using extra long drumsticks. Didn't know that they came in different lengths.

The bass player is Armand Sabal-Lecco, the keyboard player is Philippe Saisse. All 3 of them were also the musicians on Senri's 3rd solo album called "Cider Hard & Sweet" and they did a live set that was also recorded on Blu-ray and DVD where I believe this video is from.
