I saw Clyde's last performance in Oakland in 1972. He was trying to sing "Easter Parade", since it was Easter, instead of "White Christmas" . He became confused, lost track of the words and had to helped off the stage, while Ben E. King finished his set. Clyde never performed again, dying a month or so later. What a sad ending to his amazing career. He was and still is my favorite singer. My favorite song is "Treasure of Love" followed by "Without Love" there is nothing at all. Without Clyde there would be no R&B music in the 1950s.

When he was with the drifters they’d do Easter Parade live. Teaming Clyde and Bill Pinkney. Always wish they’d recorded it in a “White Christmas” vain.

This man, in addition, to Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, had the most unique tenor voices I've ever heard in my life. Thank you for the post.

He was so pivotal to bringing RnB into mainstream broadcasting , a true pioneer of rock and roll. I seldom see his name mentioned when early rock music is discussed or written, and that is a shame. He paved the way for James Brown, Marvin Gay, Jackie Wilson, and so many others. A beautiful voice who could do gospel, rock & roll, along with classic pop. It’s wonderful to read these comments from other music lovers.

Clyde McPhatter was one of the best ever. You can put Sam Cooke, Brook Benton and Jackie Wilson in with him to be the BEST of that era (and beyond).
Clyde could sing anything and make it his own song.
    More McPhatter videos, please.

Poor Clyde. Died of a heart attack at age 40 in 1972. Clyde inspired a number of sound-alike "high tenors" in his day. They seemed to be everywhere in the late 1950s and early 1960s. And I loved the songs of all of them! Check out Dee Clark, Marv Johnson, Jimmy Jones, Bobby Hendricks.

I had the biggest crush on him as a teenager after my father introduced me to Doo Wop. I used to just stare at the picture of him with his face slightly turned to the side with that big beautiful smile of his. I thought that he was the most handsome man ever and I loved that album sooo much. My yoinger sister and I knew the words to every song on that album from The Treasure of Love, Seven Days. Money Honey, Without Love, etc. What a talent!!! I have his CDs with his greatest hits/Anthology. i'll bet his tenor leads in that heavenly choir🌹🌹.

Clyde was a music icon who I idolized. In fact, I'm not convinced Rock & Roll would have broken into the mainstream without he and Alan Freed. In 1955, me and a friend happened to meet Clyde walking outside Palisade Park in NJ where he was on leave from the Army. Heart pounding, I pleaded, "Clyde, can I have your autograph?" So accommodating, he replied, "Sure kid, got a pen?" OMG no - nor did he. Devastating moment in my life.

It is a real crying shame that so many black artists of that era have very, very little film footage of them performing LIVE, in studio, or stage. Their fame often predated the television networks willingness to show blacks, of any sort at all. And lo, so very many of them could not sustain their careers or lives into the late 60's or 70's when more opportunities arose. Like I said, a crying shame.

Yes, the drinking hurt Clyde, but as with many Black artists of the era, racism and discrimination hurt his career also. You may read up on Clyde in a book called, "Dream Boogie, the story of Sam Cooke". Sam and Clyde were best friends and both were active against racism and discrimination.

There was artistic integrity. An artist was true to their art, not just $. Notice the good diction singers sang with; you could understand every word they uttered. We were a more "literate" society back then, people were readers, This is why the song writing is so superior to what we see today. Sam Cooke was an intellectual and read voraciously, as did Curtis Mayfield and Smokey Robinson. The spoke well, and were concerned with issues beyond money and personal fame; they set the standard.

When I first started watching and listening to this video , I used to get emotional and teary-eyed. But I have now come to realize that the lyrics to this song are wicked. These are the words of a psychopath and, in the least, a stalker. This is a man whose love saw fit to leave him and move on. And now he is talking about how he has no chart and doesn't know where to start. He is a perfect candidate for a restraining order. He is even willing to kill himself so that he can stalk this woman in paradise.

Am I the only one who interprets the end of this song as a sort of Romeo/Juliette, that she is dead and he know that when he dies she'll be there (the hereafter)? I can't remember if "Moody River" had the same narrative arc, but there were a few from the 50's and 60's that were weirdly suicide-themed. Again, I might be interpreting it incorrectly. Neil --- I did a google check, too. Other than Ron McPhatter's claim, is there any documented evidence that he is the son of Clyde McPhatter and Ruth Brown? Forgive my cynicism, but I just don't buy this story until proven factual. I am reminded of the award winning Broadway play, "Six Degrees of Separation" in which the lead character claims to be the son of Sidney Poitier, in order to advance his career, but is ultimately discredited.
