This is amazing!! I was born way after he passed and no one who is alive (in my branch of the family) has ever met him, so as a McPhatter I find this amazing!! He was a great singer!
I was blessed to book Clyde back in '64...a super talent, a nice guy....enormously giften vocalist--both on his own and as a lead singer with The Drifters. RIP, Clyde--oh--by the way--that piano player / harmony singer ain't too bad either. RIP, Bobby D. One of the truly GREAT singer/songwriters of the rock era.
I'm currently on both a Bobby Darin/Clyde McPhatter kick...buying expensive original vinyl on EBay and some on CD....So glad to see these 2 together! I''m 54 maybe just a tad too young to have really appreciated them both in their prime (I was 15 and 16 when Clyde/Bobby died respectively) since I was into the heavy rock n roll bands of the time,etc..but I'm so glad middle age has given me the opportunity to appreciate stuff like this... tks for making this avaliable
Any footage of the amazing Bobby Darin is a true treasure. An all time great, spread the word. And any footage of both Bobby and Clyde McPhatter is a double treasure, only that Bobby is much less remembered nowadays. And he was making a wonderful re-reading of the American classics of the 30's,40's and 50's with a swinging tension and nonchalance performances far more impressive than Sinatra's (who was a monster, of course).
Bobby may very well may be the most versatile and gifted entertainer this world has ever produced. Who says you can't have it all? He had it all over the place
What a great piece of Rock and Roll History of two of it's greats! We made this our video pick of the week here! Thank you for posting it! Bennie Dingo Rock-it Radio
Clyde was unique both in looks and voice. Darin aka/Bobby Darienzo from the Bronx admired and loved r&b music and singers as evidenced by his vocalized black inflections in many of his hit tunes. Liquor killed Clyde as he descended into that bottomless pit known as alcoholism, and we lost a superb singer at a very early age. Many years later,Ruth Brown told an interviewer that her only son was the result of an on-again, off-again relationship with Clyde. RIP
@windowpain1 Maybe one reason Clyde never achieved superstar status was because he left the Drifters. People knew the Drifters, but not the name Clyde McPhatter. Another reason might have to do with a group called the Beatles and the whole British Invasion.
weldon manney: If I could, what would be the point--its not really a contest. Plenty of great voices in the past, all with different sounds and tones, and each with his or her place in music history. I hate to pick favorites or try to say which is best or the greatest.
It's my contention that had there been no Alan Freed, there might not be any rock and roll today. I know it's a stretch, but the only other one that I put in that category is Clyde McPhatter. If you weren't around in late 53-54, you can't imagine the impact this great had on the music in its attraction to whites of the time who had only heard of Patti Page, etc.
Don and Phil were huge fans of his. There is a famous pic of Phil singing with Clyde and the 2 Frankies in a jam session. I think Don took the pic. There was another pic that Don was in, but whoever took it wasnt as good a photographer.
Clyde McPhatter was nothing short of fabulous. I think he was just ahead of his time. Clyde was a product of the 50's and Atlantic Records. When Jerry Wexler and Ahmet Ertegun attempted to make his records more "Pop" and dress them up with white vocals and basic white arrangements, just to get them played on shows like Dick Clark's Bandstand. Clyde died from alcoholism at 39 years old in 1972 and just couldn't make it in the business in the late 60's. One of the first in the R&R Hall Of Fame.
Please advise the name of the person who received this information. There is overwhelming evidence against it. Clyde & Ruth were beloved by many. Some knew them personally. This info would have made the news after both singers died. Their friends would have confirmed the fact and then helped the young man with his singing career. It's comical & convenient that no living person (other than Ron) can substantiate this claim. Rumor, hearsay & gossip are just that. We need facts, please.
@JDWnSRV Okay I meant all time..and of the era !!!! some of his recordings were too heavily orchestrated with angelic choirs..not necessary with Clyde due to that wonderful voice..demonstrated on the magnificent "Next to Me" just a B side and I think his finest recording....
Bobby Darin was never Darienzo. Check your facts. And there is no documented evidence that McPhatter & Brown had a child, regardless of the claims & rumours floating around TH-cam. The one thing you got right is Clyde, Ruth & Bobby were enormously talented.
Bobby Darin has a great voice, but he sounds flat next to Clyde. With that voice and his looks, it's a mystery to me why Clyde Mcphatter never achieved the same status as other legends of his era. Does anybody have a theory?
Clyde McPhatter was one of the most under rated talents in the U.S.A.
I like all the music that he made.
Two very talented men who sadly are no longer with us. R.I.P. Bobby Darin and Clyde McPhatter.
This is amazing!! I was born way after he passed and no one who is alive (in my branch of the family) has ever met him, so as a McPhatter I find this amazing!! He was a great singer!
If I'm not "too late to the party" as the term goes, where are your McPatters' from? Clyde was from North Carolina.
That's my cousin also. Durham North Carolina. Came up to Washington D.C.

WOW !!! Clyde McPhatter !!! One of my favorite singers.

Bobby Darin certainly is one of the greatest talents ever in pop/rock history.

IMHO same could be said of Clyde.

Wow, Clyde and Bobby sound great together. I wish they did an album together like this.
WONDERFUL CLIP.

Jackie Wilson's voice was just as pure and mesmerizing...My favorite as well.
That was great - after billy ward & the dominos & the drifters, the clyde man was the boss man - should have gotten more recognition

Back when music was music and the musicians actually had talent.....
@1984ROCNATION
also there is a mcphatter reunion in lumberton NC again in May 2012 i believe.
@bigbodawg77 Yes, that's Clyde. He was lead singer of the Drifters until late 1954.
@windowpain1 Maybe one reason Clyde never achieved superstar status was because he left the Drifters. People knew the Drifters, but not the name Clyde McPhatter. Another reason might have to do with a group called the Beatles and the whole British Invasion.
Can you name any voice more pure than Clyde Mc Phatter's? I have never heard any more pure. You can understand every word clearly....
weldon manney: If I could, what would be the point--its not really a contest. Plenty of great voices in the past, all with different sounds and tones, and each with his or her place in music history. I hate to pick favorites or try to say which is best or the greatest.
Nanjimoy Al Kursi........You've got me on pins and needles. Its been more than two years; tell me who it is already !!! 3-25-20

Absolutely fabulous!
He can sing his ass off and those Rush Hour movies with Jackie Chan are killer.
You had an awesome cousin.
Thanks for the correction regarding Bobby Darin's birth name: Cassotto.
Enjoyable. Great style

I always like to see Clyde sing. I can't believe that voice is coming out of his mouth, somehow.
Have Mercy Baby was Clyde McPhatter first R&B hit with his group the Dominos in 1951 on Federal/King records.
Don and Phil were huge fans of his. There is a famous pic of Phil singing with Clyde and the 2 Frankies in a jam session. I think Don took the pic. There was another pic that Don was in, but whoever took it wasnt as good a photographer.
I didn't know Bobby Darin played piano@
Thee amazing Clyde was one of your cousins?

LOVE CLYDE!...BUT LISTEN TO JACKIE WILSON SING... 'DANNY BOY" THE ONE LIVE, WHEN HE GETS ON HIS KNEES, NO ONE WILL EVER SING IT BETTER.
did you know Ruth Brown had a baby by Clyde McPhatter?
