The Genealogy of "Beat Juggling"

  • When it comes to "Beat Juggling", lineage matters and plagiarism is wrong.
I recently came across a video on social media featuring a young up and coming DJ who straight bit a routine from an OG battle DJ. Not cool! The video was accompanied with just about every hashtag a DJ would include in his or her post but failed to credit the original author of the routine that was copied. Not cool! I personally have been on the receiving end of plagiarizers with regards to my own work as a DJ on multiple occasions. Not cool! Although the OG battle DJ referenced above may not even know his creativity has been stolen (not cool!), I felt compelled to whip up this latest post in hopes to discourage DJs from ever doin' something as disingenuous as copying another DJs routine (down to the songs the authors use) and allowing to be publicly praised or applauded for being competent at something they're obviously not competent at.
While I'm at it, I'd like to also note the following. "Beat Juggling" is no longer a secret. Thanks to teachers of this style of DJing, the mysticism behind "Beat Juggling" no longer exists. However, teaching someone any of the foundational "Beat Juggle" patterns or #rootmovements as I call them, without properly knowing the history behind who invented whatever move(s) being instructed is egregious in my opinion. "Beat Juggling" is a complex art that traces back 4 decades and capitalizing on a style with such rich history without bothering to educate yourself about the people who laid the groundwork for what you're getting paid to teach others is not cool!
And so, whether you're a biter or a "teacher" of this art but know not the true science and scientist behind "Beat Juggling", I took the time to list for YOU what I personally deem the #rootmovements of "Beat Juggling".

Excellent presentation of the beat juggling genealogy Rob, and it's so unfortunate, that many DJs don't credit the creators from each of the styles. And just like everything in life, nothing should be bitten, it's one thing to be influenced but, it's another thing to just straight copy, without adding their own styles to whatever it is, that they're doing. Even Bruce Lee said it himself, back in the 60's, and his quote mentions that " Always be yourself, express yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it". So in layman's terms, "DON'T BITE"!

this video serves 2 purposes. First to make sure up and comers aren't forgetting to cite their sources, Second as something to pick apart from one spot all the root movements that have kind of been spread throughout his channel but never in one spot. Thanks again Rob.

The beat juggle scenes are classic on here. The only beat juggles and routines I could never touch is the late Roc Raida. I'll have to lose at least 30 pounds to do the ninja move...lol. Salute brother.

My Genealogy of “Beat Juggling” list is a comprehensive documentation of “beat jugglers” who created/contributed the ROOT (core) movements within “Beat Juggling”. In other words, these are the moves P Trix, Develop, Static (uk), Mista B, and Roli Rho had to learn in order to get to the level they're at. I get and respect your feel they're all noteworthy but please don’t confuse contemporary “beat juggling” with the nuts and bolts of the style.

@@djrobswift Right on Rob. I respect the architects. In no way do I want to confuse the two, the video and foundational techniques just made me think of those cats. On another note, would love to see a full Xmen doc. Keep up the good work homie. Respect from the Bay!

biters must give credit to the og djs for their routines. i think they might need to practice cuz of the biters aren't mastering the beat juggling basics but they aint. good video.

Respectfully, growing up as a rural white kid I've always loved the sounds of turntablism. But without a sense of the true people or culture driving it I always felt it was wrong to try to use it as a piece of my musical voice. The work you do to preserve and document the history of this art is so important. Thank you.

At first glance, we got nothing wrong here, just some virtue signaling to may be earn a yt like or two...
But damn dude, if one thinks about it...
Thats one fucking racist statement! 😠🤮
What has the color of your skin to do with what kind of vehicle you use for expressing yourself musically? Should asians not choose to play the classical piano to express themselves, because they happen to be "yellow" and have no sense for 17th century white wig wearing europeans. Should black folks limit themselves to either bush drums or well turntables (which were invented by the white man and sophisticated for the DJ by the yellow man)?
*edit: I even forgot the "red" people...by your logic, those poor fellows only got the flute and a tiny one that is...

It sucks but plagiarism in the arts is everywhere it comes down to people with no talent just trying to make a profit but it is saddening when it comes to turntablism because the history is so scarcely documented however i am grateful that you dedicate your time to help share insight into the Art

I think at least people should get back to the old school way of doing things, during a set, or a routine, or a rap, give respects to those that came before you, those that inspired, those that you learned from, those that you admire. We stand on the shoulders of giants. I got my first gig coming up New Years Eve, and I was just thinking about this. I am not that skilled, I am not that technical yet, but I am going to do what I know how to do, and that is backspin, and do some simple scratches, and play some great beats and some great tracks, the very least I can do in that venue on that night is give thanks and respect to Grandmaster Flash and Grand Wizard Theodore. Would you mind adding some years or approximate years to that genealogy of the beat juggle?
