Rob Swift's flava in ya ear

  • I know where in an age were a lot of battle DJs are “Beat Juggling” Electronic and Techno music. And hey, if that’s the stuff you listen to, if that’s the stuff that moves you, if that’s the stuff you wanna “Beat Juggle”… be my guest. But Funk begets Funk and “Beat Juggling” is ALL about sounding Funky. So I strongly suggest you work with actual Funky music when you’re formulating a new pattern or routine. You know... somethin' wit' some FLAVA!
    Many believe “Beat Juggling” as we know it today is stale, synthetic and flat lines after a few quick seconds. One reason for this is a lot of battle DJs are working with beats that are produced on a computer grid. Sequenced copy and paste style. There’s no soul in that! Factor in the unrecognizable songs competitors are using and you’re audience won’t be able to acknowledge what is your doing to the music. This leads to a disconnect between you and the people you're supposed to be performing for.
    If you wanna conceive your own Funky beat, tackle familiar songs with live Funky drummers or Funky samples. Done properly, Funky Beats equal Funky Beat Juggles.

    Talk about multi tasking. Gotta give Rob credit for being able to communicate with dude while beat juggling lol !!! Rob can do telemarketing while doing this stuff. Its all good.

    True champion, can have a conversation and still knows where he is in the juggle. That’s what It takes to be at that level so dude talking so much is a blessing, there’s always distractions in life, it’s hard maintain your focus throughout.

    C'mon people, this is Rob showing a video from his youth, to show how he developed his juggles and patterns, to inspire the next generation to go out and just jam, bounce off each other and not be afraid to make mistakes along the way. This is his foundation he's exposing. Just enjoy it, why do you need to try to find the negatives? This is just a natural interaction with couple of friends, don't knock his buddy for talking to him! Thy're both of the standard that they can juggle and chat (to a certain extent!). Rob's right in his description, that the more funky the original, the more funky the juggle.

      Even more patience is required to learn how to "beat juggle".

    • @RealDealy
      @RealDealy 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob Swift Do you use some of your juggles to help make beats? For me, juggling, and just playing with the music on the turntables helped me make beats out of the records I used. It's like watching the turntable go around in a low light setting helped me zone out into another world and hear the sounds of the music so I can play with them using dj techniques. That is one major reason why I can't go to cdj's or controllers for production, unless maybe the controller has a motorized platter but it still isn't the same as a turntable because picking up the needle plays a part in the process as well. Damn, I went of on a tangent. My bad.

    • @RealDealy
      @RealDealy 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Iamyouonlydifferent Yeah, I like to that when it comes to wanting to play the music like when using a drum machine but, it's something about watching the turntable go around, that puts me into another world. I'ts hypnotic. For juggling,, I don't want to do that because the beauty of juggling is it's free form so anything can come about if you just like the record rock, and you come up with ideas on the fly. If I used cue points, it would have to be planned, and won't be the same. Once, I figure out a routine, yeah controllers would be good, especially at a party so I would be sure nothing goes wrong, and mess up the flow of the party. I do like controllers though, especially for being able to move quickly and still be creative because everything stays clean, and accurate as far as loops and samples.

    You're right on many fronts in terms of music but if you use records that audiences know all the time then change them it's old.The key factor is SHOCK value.New sounds with old skills you'll see.I used to be just like you until I realized great musicians we all look up to such as Micheal jackson transcended 3 decades by changing his sound and still keeping his signature style,Madonna same thing.These may not be your kind of musicians but they do make my point. Even in hip hop emcees have had to change lyric styles ,delivery, and the beats too from break beats to todays fully made from studio.

    Rob I Have 2 Questions does the slipmat have to be butter smooth to do what your doing? And How would you break it down for a beginner for beat juggling I have the flow I just wanna know how you make a different beat? If you have time to reply thank you so much thatd be really cool

    • @djimma5080
      @djimma5080 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you need a smooth slip matt you want to be able to spin the record and get 2 spins from it, if you spin it back and it only spins for 1 spin it won't be quick enough
