  • Join me on a particularly pipe rich day on the River thames foreshore. Today I find more pipes in one day then I ever have! Learn how I identify my pipes and find out more about why there seem to be so many pipes and pipe stems found in the Thames mud. I also find some other interesting pieces of history which I could do with some help identifying!
    Here is a great link to help you to date any pipes you find
    www.pipearchive...
    you do need a permit to mudlark on the River Thames and you can find out the relevant information on the website of the Port of London Authority.

      @Scott Almont Perhaps you meant well, but there are ways to compliment women that are a bit less objectifying. As commenting on how one "fills out a sweater" is really quite creepy don't you think Scott?

    I have seen the 'Three anchors' design before. It appeared to have some connection to the Board of Admiralty. I like the way your investigations in to the people connected with your finds brings them to life. These quite ordinary people never get into the history books. But their stories are no less interesting than the rich and famous. I look forward to the next episode.

    Hello, had a motorcycle accident 9 weeks ago, had surgery on my foot, a plate and screws. Been sitting with the leg up all this time. Your mudlarking vids have been keeping me sane, or partially sane at least, lol. Very pleasant to watch, enjoy the historical aspect of your finds. Innovative works of art you make. Keep up the great work Nicola and thank you.

    Good day Nicola, I sure have enjoyed all your videos. When I found your channel I was like, Mudlarking? I imagined a few things but was so tickled to learn what it was and now I’m hooked lol! I sit for hours watching you and learning about all the finds and you make it very interesting. I wish I could come out and mudlark with you,and help find pipes and coins and such. That will just be a dream, that doesn’t come true I’m afraid. I live in North Carolina in a nursing home and it seems that I’m stuck here. I do pass a lot of my time on TH-cam trying to keep from losing my mind in here lol. Like you,I have a soft spot for the pipes,I have a few Native American peace pipes. So it would be cool to have one of the pipes from there cause they are very old just as the peace pipes are. Your a very interesting lady and I could listen to you for hours and your knowledgeable about lots of things too. I look forward to your next video.Before I forget,I was so thrilled to see nuggetnogging mudlarking with you and Si and Chillbill! He has been my favorite metal detector sense I first saw it on TH-cam! He is a sweet God fearing man and he’s pretty funny too. Stay safe

    The glass in the metal casing looks very much like an early flashlight lens. The portion of the lighter that would have the striker, wick, and flames will pull upwards out of the base. It’s possible there will be a maker referenced there. What wonderful finds this week! Thank you!

    We hunt the shore line near the location of an old Indian trading post on the Mississippi River in Prarie Du Chien Wisconsin, there are many short pieces of pipe stem laying around the waters edge. They used to keep pipes and Tobacco in the store and you could smoke a bowl and when you finished they would break off a short piece of the stem and throw it away, there were many kinds of gum disease back in the time and breaking off the stem was the so called sanitary way of operating at the time. There is a business man that looks for the pieces of stem and he strings them up like a necklass and frames them. He thinks they are Indian beads, I never had the heart to tell him any different he just has too much fun finding them.

    What a marvelous batch of finds! That glass dome is particularly intriguing-- I wondered if it might be a magnifier? Maybe at one point it screwed into a wooden base to allow it to slide along a page or a table (it could've been used for everything from reading to jewelrywork to watch repair, I'd guess.) Just a thought-- it magnified so beautifully.

    I think the lens might be a bullseye or concentrator off an old candle or oil lantern. It focussed the meagre light into a beam. Also in one of other vids you found a small dumpy bottle which is probably the base of a small oil lamp, which were still made fairly recently as decorative objects. I think the dumped keys could well have been stolen and used for burglaries.

    • @Aegopodium
      @Aegopodium 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I quickly went to the PLA website and these are the available permits:
      The PLA issues two types of foreshore permits.
      Standard - allows digging to a depth of 7.5 cm (for all new applicants)
      Mudlark - allows digging to a depth of 1.2m

    • @nicolawhitemudlark
      @nicolawhitemudlark  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes, as per below, standard permit allows 7.5cm. mudlarks from the society of mudlarks can dig 1.2m. There are only 52 of these mudlarks. There is a waiting list to join them. Most people have the standard permit.

    The glass lens is from a 'Bull's Eye Lantern' various types of which were used for many decades. I believe that Sherlock Holmes used one in some of his adventures and some police forces had them. They were oil-fired like the common Hurricane Lamp and the bulls-eye lens was to concentrate the light. Later models, say 1920s or 1930s were battery powered. I have two battery-powered pocket torches (flashlights) from the 1930s which have similar lenses but these are of smaller diameter than your example. Incidentally, both of my torches still work as some present day batteries fit them.

    You know, besides being very knowledgeable about antique artifacts, Nicole must have the eyes of a Hawk! She says: “See what I’m looking at?” I think: “No”. then she says: “I’ll zoom in.... now you see it?” I say: “NO”. I would probably walk around there for days and not see a thing!

    I did a quick search of A H, but sadly came to a dead end. My orgiinal instinct was that it might have had something to do with Prince Albert (Albert being of House Hanover if you see my train of thought.) yet anything out there that may confirm it, online at least, is a bit thin on the ground.

    Liked your video before I even watched it. Congratulations in literally digging up that pipe! Like they expect a person faced with a great find to say, nope, too far down and have to stop. Natural curiosity takes over. Besides, in a few hours no one will ever know you were there unlike digging on solid ground.
    Again, well done with all your finds and when you find a pipe, I too wonder how old and how long is the stem. I also wonder who last used it and when. Hugs from Canada and thank you for a great video.

    Just had to say thank you for giving me the biggest and funniest up yours moment the other day, I have learnt so much watching you with the pipes. I have a friend who’s husband likes to prove you wrong about just about anything. While he was out fishing with his son they found some clay pipe bits and bobs on the river bank where they were ,when he was telling us about one of them and describing it while his son retrieved it. I recognised the description and said I know what that is, as expected he roared with laughter told I was being stupid as usual and bet me twenty pounds that I didn’t. So I took the bet and let him have it ,it’s a royal antediluvian order of buffalo pipe, the order was set up around 1822 at the harp tavern great Russel street London and it’s likely that pipe was made in the area said I, oh faff off he said how would you know that. Behind him everyone was fighting back tears of laughter google it I told him.I don’t think I have enjoyed a stunned moment more needles to say I came away from his home twenty pounds better off lol, I’m glad because I was able to help a couple of guys In need get some food on the way home. So thank you for the education lol 😂

    Hi Nicola again a very enjoyable video ;-)
    The magnifying glass could be from a bicycle lamp made by Nordisk Element Fabrik in Denmark 1922. The NEFA lamp was sold in UK by Arthur & Co. London to members of "The Cyclist´s Touring Club" under the slogan "NEver FAils" at a price of 7 Shillings 6 Pence, and extra Element (battery) at a price of 1 Shilling 6 Pence. Benny from Tønder DK ;-)

    I know at 10:20 you found another pipe, but I got more excited by the piece of "stone" above it....is that a piece of worked flint? Looks like a spearhead or a piece that was worked on to become a tool or weapon of some kind. Maybe Im way off and it's just a piece of chipped stone. Lee :)
