    Yes, you may roll the patient over to place the bedpan under them, but for this skill the patient is able to lift their hips and many students find that process easier. Either way is acceptable for the exam (it is based on the patients level of ability and since your "patient" for the exam is another testing student, they will have that ability). Thanks and good luck!

    You will definitely need to put a chucks under the bedpan because with the movement of the head of the bed, the contents can spill and soil the linens. Taking the chucks out with the bedpan gives you a way to cover the bedpan for transport. I like your rationale about leaving the chucks in place in case the patient couldn't wipe well but for the test, the care plan will state the patient can wipe themselves, so that is not necessary. Good luck!

    Very good question! If the testing center doesn't have disinfectant spray, you will perform all other actions as described in the video, omitting that step. Because most of these supplies will be used on multiple testing candidates, there must be a way to disinfect those items for future use, so there should be disinfectant spray available for you to use. Thank you for your question!

    Yes. The skill is presented in a specific order because of infection control principles. You must close the curtain for privacy BEFORE washing your hands because the curtain is not clean and will contaminate your clean hands. You must put the barrier down under the patient BEFORE placing the bedpan. You must put your gloves on right BEFORE touching your patient to keep your gloves clean for the patient. The order of each step matters. Good luck!

    @85Dignity Thank you for your comment! When performing skills, we need to be mindful of proper infection control techniques - part of which is keeping our gloves clean for the patient. Therefore, it is a good practice to apply your gloves immediately before touching the patient to keep them clean. As long as your skin is intact and there are no body fluids on the sheets, this is the appropriate time to apply your gloves! These principles are reviewed in our online program!

    You will create hospital corners anytime you have an untucked sheet on the foot of the bed. The purpose is to keep the corners of the sheet off the floor. Since there is no reason to untuck a sheet during any other skill, you will not have corners hanging down to worry about. All other skills that require a privacy blanket will have you pull the sheet down toward the bottom of the bed, but will not require you to completely untuck the sheet. If you do, you must re-tuck at the end and do corners.

    @ 4yourcna... Are these Videos still up to Florida requirements for taking the CNA exam in Florida..

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @L8DKDNA1 Thank you for your comment. For the Florida exam, it is not required to check ID bands during the test because not all patients in all settings will have ID bands (ALFs, some nursing homes and home care will not use them). These videos are demonstrating current Florida requirements. Talking each step through will inform your patient of what you are doing each step of the way and help them become more comfortable. This is reflected in the category "Indirect care" during the test.

    Yes, this procedure takes several minutes, but every step is necessary. Failure to perform all steps as shown can result in a failing grade for the exam and complications for the patient. This video demonstrates one method (the preferred method for the exam), but other methods can be used. If the patient cannot lift their hips, they can be rolled to the side and the bedpan placed against their buttocks and held there as the patient rolls onto their back. Good luck on the exam!

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    You have to provide privacy for this skill. Using the sheet for privacy may get the sheet wet or soiled, requiring a linen change. It is better to use a privacy blanket and pull the sheet down to the bottom of the bed. You can roll the patient onto their side or have them lift their hips to place the bedpan under the patient (method does not matter), but if rolling the patient, make sure the patient scoots toward you before rolling so they stay in the center of the bed for safety. Thanks!

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @85Dignity Thank you for your comment! You are very right, every state is a little different and every teacher will teach a little differently, as well. Good infection control comprehension is important to keep your gloves clean - so everything you touch with gloves on will contaminate the gloves before you even touch the patient. It becomes important to understand which items in the patient environment are clean and dirty...and only applying gloves before touching patient! Thanks

    For the exam, it is not necessary to contain the bedpan in a plastic bag. The bedpan has been cleaned before storage, so there is no need to wrap it in plastic. It must be wrapped in an absorbent material (the chux) when transporting to the toilet for disposal. You may certainly clean it with soap and water if you wish, but it is not required. Simply rinsing and disinfecting is sufficient. Thank you and good luck.

I was wondering if I could provide hand care before the bedpan is removed or would it be better to do it before I wash my hands at the end of the skill? Also while cleaning the bedpan is it ok to touch the faucet with gloves or would it be better to use a napkin? Thank you for your help.

    Thank you for your response. My teacher, teach us that before roll the parient to other side of the bed we should roll them first towards us in 3 section ( shoulder, hips and legs) to place the bed mat. And do the same to other side. I am waiting for my florida exam schedule.

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are many acceptable ways of performing the skills. I cannot remark on whether your instructor's technique meets testing standards but I can tell you that generally it is not acceptable to roll a patient toward you as it is poor body mechanics (the bulk of their weight along their shoulders, back, hips and buttocks is far away from you) and your patient should never be positioned eye level with their crotch. This video reflects one acceptable method of performing this skill which meets testing standards. Best of luck!

    the blanket is just optional. since the pt is covered already with top sheet

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, the patient should be given something to wash up with after using the bedpan (either a soapy washcloth or a hand wipe is sufficient). Certainly, having the patient wash their hands at the sink with soap and water is the best option, but the patient is unable to leave the bed (or they wouldn't have needed a bedpan in the first place), so we have to make do and help them clean their hands in the best possible manner. Good luck!

    Regarding the infecction control principles, you should NOT touch the call light or bed controls with soiled gloves, because you will further soil those surfaces and the patient touches those surfaces, which can cause infections and illnesses. Remove your gloves (or use a barrier between soiled gloves and surfaces) before touching those items. Put a second set of gloves on to remove, empty and clean the bedpan then remove those gloves before touching any surfaces. Thanks!

    Breathe. Take your time. Remember that they are not looking for perfection, but the test is primarily there to determine if you are able to perform skills safety and have a good understanding of patient rights and infection control. You may correct any mistakes you make verbally ("Correction, I would have...) unless the evaluator stops you to point out a safety problem. Talk to the patient, explain everything. Wash hands before and after each skill. Follow the videos. Good luck!

    Any skill where the patient may be exposed in any way requires a privacy blanket. Think of how you would feel lying in bed in a hospital gown with no sheet (cold and exposed) so anytime we remove the sheet, we must place something over the patient.

  • @JackTheHopeful
    @JackTheHopeful 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do I need another blanket? I was taught without it.also to lean patient to other side then place disposable pad and bed pan.

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For the exam, you are not required to raise the bed to a comfortable height because not all beds in all settings have this ability (think home care and assisted living). You may adjust the bed to your comfort if you wish but MUST lower it at the end of the skill (safety). These videos demonstrate current testing principles only and that step is not required. I explain this thoroughly in my classroom training - these videos are intended as an adjunct to classroom training programs.

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    For the exam, you are not leaving the clinical environment, therefore no handwashing is necessary. However, you are correct - if you had actually left the room, you would wash your hands upon leaving and returning. This is not required for the test however. Best of luck!

  • @miranda3951
    @miranda3951 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is it considered infection control to hand the patient something to wash their hands after using the bedpan? In my state we were taught to hand them a wet washcloth, which doesn't seem very disinfectant. Is this something that could cause someone to fail the test?

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for your comment. This video reflects current Florida state standards. Cleaning is only required if the patient cannot do so themselves. The care plan for this skill states the patient is able to complete that task on their own, so cleaning is not necessary. Thanks for the comment and good luck!

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The bedpan was cleaned and disinfected prior to storage in the bedside cabinet, therefore it does not need to be handled with gloves until it has been placed under the patient. However, you may apply your gloves at this point if you wish. Please be careful not to contaminate your gloves by touching anything "dirty' in the environment once you have applied your gloves but before touching the patient to prevent contaminating the patient. Thanks and good luck!

  • @TheDrSynical
    @TheDrSynical 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you needed to roll over a patient, would you first move them to the side then roll them over, place the bedpan, and move them in thirds back or how would it work? Could you just hold them with one hand when you put the bedpan? Also, can you touch the call light and the handle to move the bed up with your gloves or how would that work once you place and remove the bedpan?

    Disinfect per your facility policy. If your training center told you to rinse three times, then perform the skill that way. However, testing centers should have disinfectant spray as the bathing items are used by multiple people during testing and should be disinfected properly to prevent cross-contamination. I am concerned about the lack of infection control principles here and would ask the evaluator if disinfectant spray is available. Good luck and thank you for your kind comment!

    Hey I have a very important question about this skill video...when you mention that your going to step away to get another pair of gloves do you perform the hand washing technique again before putting on a fresh pair of gloves ? Also I'm concerned about putting away supplies while still wearing gloves.wont that contaminate the bed pan,toilet paper ?

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, you did not leave the bedside, so you do not need to wash your hands between glove changes. You use a paper towel between your gloves and the items you are storing to prevent cross-contamination. Please see new videos for more complete instruction.

    @dreamchasers19 It is not an infection control violation to touch a clean bedpan with clean hands. You should certainly have gloves on before touching a bedpan that has waste products in it. But the bedpan is cleaned and disinfected before being stored in the drawer (never put a dirty bedpan away), so the bedpan is clean when it is removed from the drawer and can be picked up without gloves. Our online program explains what is clean and dirty in an environment for better understanding.

    For the exam, you can ask them to raise their hips (they will be able to do so for the exam). If, in real life, the patient is not able to raise their hips, put the siderail up on the opposite side for safety and roll the patient onto that side to place the bedpan under the patient, then roll them back on top of the bedpan, so they remain in the center of the bed on the bedpan. If no siderail is available, the nurse will be able to determine a safe plan based on the patient's abilities. Thanks!

    Thank you for your reply! Your response was absolutely correct! However, we removed the comment you were responding to due to the profanity and unprofessional nature of the post made by the other individual. So, for anyone else reading this post, the question was regarding why tissue was given when most patients cannot wipe themselves. Promoting independence is the answer. If the patient is unable to perform any task, we will assist them as necessary. Thank you for your comment and good luck!

    Doing a mock test I failed this portion. I know how the bedpan is placed but where exactly do I need to place it?

    Regarding your hair, it really depends on the setting you are working in. Some settings are more strict than others. In general, if you have hair long enough to swing forward when you are bent at the waist and is long enough to touch your patient, it should be secured in such a way as to prevent it from doing so. Ponytail, braid, bun, etc would work.Some facilities do not enforce this and allow long, loose hair. Your hair will bring germs home with you, so it shouldn't touch patients. Thanks!

    You do not need a paper towel to turn the faucet on. The faucet is considered dirty since it is touched with dirty hands. Since your gloves are dirty after handling the bedpan, it is acceptable to turn the faucet on without a paper towel. You only need a paper towel to turn the faucet off AFTER washing your hands to prevent re-contamination. And yes, males use the bedpan for bowel movements but the test scenario is a female using bedpan for urination (she can undress and wipe herself). Thanks!
