  • In this episode I travel to the Isle of Mull to find out if paying to go on an organised wildlife photography trip is worth the money. I take photos of White Tailed Eagles, Otters and lots more, all the while giving you a step by step guide explaining what to look out for, the positives and the negatives.
To make the filming and explanation as easy as possible, this tour was hosted by my good friend and fellow WildX Podcast host, Adam Juckes.
    I hope you enjoy.

The cost of the trip is £1,450 but does not include travel to Scotland and that is for a twin bedded room. I have always thought that UK wildlife tours were probably not staggeringly good value for money for many photographers. I am based on the South coast so the cost of travel to the West of Scotland is eye-watering but I have quite good and relatively cheap access to airports. So for me many flights are pretty cheap and even the flight included tour option is quite good. I have been visiting the West Coast since the 1960's so am familiar with the environment and wildlife. For many foreign trips local knowledge and wildlife information are essential and it may be difficult or even impossible for the independent traveller to succeed which is not true on Mull.

@@jaycee6996 it all about your personal preference and experience I guess. I’m from the South East and didn’t find the travel cost to Mull particularly eye watering but I did go out of my way to talk to others on the trip and share the journey etc. In terms of cost, again that’s all about your own preference. When I take into consideration the accommodation, all food and drink, 2 charter trips, car hire and then the hosts time and imparted knowledge and expertise and what I got out of the trip, I was happy with the cost. If you know the area, have done it before, are aware of the wildlife and how to behave around it etc then yep, do it yourself for less for sure.

You can also spend a lot more on a photo trip like this. In comparison this trip is a bargain.

Just 2 examples: 4 days on Vancouver Island 14.000 euros; 5 days polar bears in Canada approx. 30.000 euros! In addition, there is the journey to Canada.

I went to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan with Rubythroat tours specializing in bird photography. Yes, it was quite expensive, but it was so worth it as we would have struggled to get half the birds we photographed...

Thank you, yes exactly the issue. Without prior experience or knowledge of a specific location it’s really hard to get the best results photographically

Hi from Uruguay, great photography! I never payed except once for a photo birding tour, mainly because it's amazingly expensive to people of the third world. But let me tell you that for the same price of a tour we went twice to Iceland and saw all we wanted. Yet in Spain a local tour was suggested for us and he was awsome, it all depends for us if we can afford it, and also if my body will endure a whole day of photography. By the way, boat photography of wildlife is one of my prefered ways to see what's going on in the oceans and lakes!

@@DalsPhotography yeah if you can do it yourself and be confident to get the photos you want then go for it, if you can get a guide to help then that would be awesome. I agree, photography from a boat was really cool

You just cannot go wrong on the Isle of Mull for wildlife photography, BUT you really do need a day with a local expert to pick out the spots where wildlife sightings are most common. Eg Eagles nests, otter locations, etc. It just makes like so much easier. After that you can go back to them in your own time.

Absolutely agree, that’s why the tour guide on any given trip needs to be so knowledgeable otherwise you run the risk of wasting your money. Adam’s knowledge was perfect and gave us the best chance at taking some lovely photos. Thanks for commenting
