Just an update on the R7: I just had the craziest, most insane encounter yet. There was this state trooper on a interstate highway with forward facing radar. Not only he was at the end of the bend and completely out of my sight [due to trees], but he was also facing my direction of travel, making it impossible to clock me until I passed his cruiser that was parked on a shoulder. The R7 caught his signal just as I was approaching up a small hill and heading towards the bend, which then after that, a stretch [which he was at]. I had like more than half a mile of detection from a 100% off-axis [if that's the right choice of words] police radar. That was insane. Well worth the $600 so far.
My R7 should be here tomorrow. Even though I am a retired police officer, traffic officer and small town chief of police I still need one. Why?? Although we need actual peace keeping and public safety officers, LEO's now days will write a traffic citation, especially a speeding ticket to anyone for any reason. Perhaps todays police departments need more money, and this is one of the ways it funnels the money into its budget. I even received a citation recently because one of my vehicles supposedly went around a school bus while its flashers were on. NEVER! I was at funeral when this happened and I have letters from everyone at the funeral stating that I wasn't even at that location police said I was at. I even have supportive computer/GPS evidence supporting my innocence. Folks, even as a career police/traffic officer I highly recommend that everyone with a vehicle get as much protection as possible for your drive. Things have changed in the profession of LE. I have little or no trust in the system. Protect yourselves!
Sad to hear. The new rule today is to avoid all police. Many suggest to pull off the road into a strip mall until the police vehicle has passed. You don't want to be their next target for any reason. It is well known that they are looking for revenue instead of serving and protecting. I have run the V1 for many years and it has served me very well. The problem areas seem to be the 25mph zones where I have seen a lot of radar in Ohio, Mi and Illinois. In Chicagoland with out of state plates, I have been tailgated for miles hoping that I would exceed local speed limits.
I had to fight in court the accusation of passing school bus, because crooked cop tried to fine me with that b.s. I won, but since then I run 360° dash cam 24/7 , ALP and R7. Don't know if there any honest cops left in the system

Why you may ask???? if for some reason I get pulled over and the cop knows I've got one and they are going to take my detector, I can just grab the Batman detector from my ashtray area and say here ya go with a frown on my Face but a cat that ate the Canary smirk in my mind.... radar dectectors are illegal in my province up here in Canuckistan.
Yea...I got my R3 mirror tapped in my challenger...but I filed down a radenso xp visor clip and run it on the passenger side...I love the r3 because.the.power cord is on the left side...so covert behind my tint strip
SMH the Batman detector..... buddy of mine bought one and was all up in my grille about it on how I paid waaaaay too much for my R1's. I just smiled and said nothing more than "just you wait".... possession of a radar detector is illegal in my province in Canuckistan. he got nailed at 120 in an 80 zone with low power k band {know this because I was travelling and few cars behind him} so he got an almost $410+ speeding ticket and I think almost $697 for detector possession because he was so shocked he forgot to pull the unit off the dash when he got pulled over, plus other hidden fines such as court fees and fees to get your license back etc etc. LoL. not to mention the massive points he lost and he has to appear in court too... cannot just pay--you gotta show up.... why people cheap out on radar detetctors I'll never understand. the way I figure it the first save it has paid for itself!

There's not too much to say. Any sort of radio receiver is optimized for certain frequencies so I test on different frequencies to see which ones it's most sensitive to.

I didn't know he passed away but he was very hospitable and invited me to his place to test out my Escort ci360 against his laser guns. His setup was crazy cool...dude lived on an airport! I was making test runs on his runway...lol. I was active duty AF at the time down in Tucson and Roy rolled out the red carpet. He was such a nice guy and treated me like family...even invited me to go flying with him. RIP Radar Roy!

I know they're illegal in VA can a cop confiscate it if all you do is have it on the dash, I know the R3 is "invisible" to them but if all you have it in the car is it still illegal
I saw a reviewer for the R7 complain about low screen brightness and build quality. Have you had issues with the housing creaking when you grab the unit to mute or move it as well as the screen not getting bright enough? Great review and appreciate the thoroughness!
Thanks for your videos. This was a good one as I'm looking at the max 360c, pro m, and the r7. I'm coming from an old valentine one because mine is from 2008 and has no bsm filtering and looking to upgrade. I would love it if you were able to figure out an even semi quantifiable test to compare bsm filtering. As that is important to me and I'm sure tons of others. Unfortunately the only way I have been able to test this myself is run multiple at a time......
I believe he’s mentioned he won’t typically do laser testing because it’s not much more than a ticket notifier once you’re clocked with laser. You need a set of laser jammers for that

I ran an original SOLO for may years back in the 90s. I traveled so much it was convenient for rental cars and actually made me aware of many speed traps. I must have consumed a room full of 9vdc batteries over those years. But they became outdated for aggressive driving and I switched to the V1 in early 2000. What a difference. My first time out I was tracking moving radar behind me and stationary radar in front. I could see where the threats were and drive accordingly. Enjoyed your video. Few in industry can test and chart results in such a clear manner.

Currently in New Mexico crossing the country with my R7 (WA to NC). So far so good. Solid and very early KA alerts and a ton of unknown K alerts. Haven’t been hit with laser yet. Using your R3 recommended settings although I haven’t messed with segments (not too savvy with all this).
Also, not sure if this is normal but I still get alerts at slow speeds with q-ride enabled. I have it set to 40, but I still get random alerts even while stopped. And one last thing, the GPS is showing 1 mph faster than actual (compared to Garmin, TomTom and phone.
I’m curious on laser sensitivity as compared to other detectors. V1 is pretty spot on front and rear laser hit with alp or blinder. Escort radar detectors won’t even go off sometimes against a laser hit but jammers will.
I have a old cobra detector with radar detector detector it works but I'm not sure about the radar detector detector and i lived in dallas texas wich detector will be best for me.?

I returned mine I got from Best Buy before they shut down the sales. It was almost double the R3. Mazda, GMC honda's and Acuras. R7 big city with Kband may find you are annoyed kinda like the V1 but currently without a way to turn off rear K band. If you want great BSM get a Radenso they seem to have that nailed down almost. Got a radar question, if my radar the r3 and r7 can detect them at (in your video the red barn) a spot, does the person using the radar detector detect my speed from that far? or only right in front of them.

Wow, escort ixc and solo are worse than the batman. I dont get why Escort makes two version of the 360 ci. Why the US version has no MRCD??? For the price, there is no excuse to not detect MRCD. Can you even buy the 360 ci international version in the US??? The R7 seems like the best option if you want some future proofing. But that is not good for those that need immunity for RDD.
The price is coming down on the R7 now that it’s been out for a few years to replace my trusty R3 that I bought after seeing a review here against the detector I was running at the time. I like the R4 but it’s only slightly better on range and for $50 more I can get arrows that help identify multiple threats I encounter in my regular drives. I have been watching these older review videos before I pull the trigger on it and I’m curious about the remote mount just for a clean installation but I can’t really justify the cost over a windshield mount. I enjoy your channel and unbiased reviews and they are still relevant even years later.
Thanks for another great video! I currently run the R3 and love it but really want the arrows. Any idea whether Uniden will come out with a new detector with auto-lockouts when Escort's patent expires (2020 maybe?)? I'm trying to decide whether to jump in now with the R7 or wait for the version with auto-lockouts. Would auto-lockouts (if Uniden ever does get them) just be a software update with the R7 or would it require new hardware, i.e. a new detector altogether?
I believe the patent expires in June or so of this year. Autolockouts will be available via a software update. Apparently the code is already written. We're just waiting on the patent to expire so Uniden can release the update.
I found the Uniden DRF9 units on sale for 199.00 and decided to order 2 of them. One for me and one for the wife. We are replacing a Beltronics 945 and an Escort S55. both of these units are older and just don't seem to have good performance. I drive through radar traps all the time with each and they never make a sound, however they will pick up every Honda, Acura, and grand caravan and Audi on the street. I am hoping these newer units will serve us well for many years. these units can become very expensive trying to keep up with current tech. Do these have any capabilities or do you have a recommended setup for these for driving in a large City. (Houston) i also drive out of the city to smaller towns as well. Thanks
My Uniden R3 gives more than enough range on Ka under most situation. Like Uniden R3 the Uniden R7 and all other radar detectors can fail to save you, especially at night and no traffic. About battery operated radar detectors? They actually stop scanning at times to preserve battery life, even if you can use a power cord with it? Makes little difference.

@Vortex Radar Does it matter where on the windshield you mount the detector height wise? I personally don't like mounting my V1G1 on the glass, but instead clip it onto the passenger sunshade while propping the shade so the detector hangs down level and fires right thru the front and rear glass. Would like to know in your experience if this influences detection at all with having it closer to the roof of the vehicle.
I used to be a range snob and had two segmented redlines (still have one). After all of the BSM junk on the road these days my priorities kind of shifted. I have a max 360c now and have been very happy with it. Almost forget it’s there sometimes. The redline was an amazing detector but thanks to manufacturers polluting the bands with warning systems they’ve rendered it almost useless unless you turn off k band. I’m hoping for a true redline replacement with BSM filtering since the Redline EX was a dud.
@ Vortex Radar - This is the first Vortex video that I've watched and I thought that I saw broadcast antennas on your test route. Broadcast signals, by virtue of signal strength and despite being at a much lower frequency, can cause many poorly-designed receivers to overload and could explain the erratic behavior on several detectors during several of the tests. Just something to consider during testing...

It depends wildly on terrain. Here it’s about 400 feet. In ideal situations it can be around a mile.

Depends on when it was built. It’s usually a good idea to know how to update either way.

Got a radar question, if my radar the r3 and r7 can detect them at (in your video the red barn) a spot, does the person using the radar detector detect my speed from that far? or only right in front of them.
Radar is line of sight and closer range so you pick them up before they can pick you up

Just traded in my Max 360c for a Uniden R7. Not enough alert for the Max 360c. Escort is garbage now. Unless it’s the 360ci

I dont get why Escort makes two version of the 360 ci. Why the US version has no MRCD??? For the price, there is no excuse to not detect MRCD. Can you even buy the 360 ci international version in the US???
The R7 seems like the best option if you want some future proofing. But that is not good for those that need immunity for RDD.
The price is coming down on the R7 now that it’s been out for a few years to replace my trusty R3 that I bought after seeing a review here against the detector I was running at the time. I like the R4 but it’s only slightly better on range and for $50 more I can get arrows that help identify multiple threats I encounter in my regular drives. I have been watching these older review videos before I pull the trigger on it and I’m curious about the remote mount just for a clean installation but I can’t really justify the cost over a windshield mount. I enjoy your channel and unbiased reviews and they are still relevant even years later.
Thanks for another great video! I currently run the R3 and love it but really want the arrows. Any idea whether Uniden will come out with a new detector with auto-lockouts when Escort's patent expires (2020 maybe?)? I'm trying to decide whether to jump in now with the R7 or wait for the version with auto-lockouts. Would auto-lockouts (if Uniden ever does get them) just be a software update with the R7 or would it require new hardware, i.e. a new detector altogether?
I believe the patent expires in June or so of this year. Autolockouts will be available via a software update. Apparently the code is already written. We're just waiting on the patent to expire so Uniden can release the update.

I found the Uniden DRF9 units on sale for 199.00 and decided to order 2 of them. One for me and one for the wife. We are replacing a Beltronics 945 and an Escort S55. both of these units are older and just don't seem to have good performance. I drive through radar traps all the time with each and they never make a sound, however they will pick up every Honda, Acura, and grand caravan and Audi on the street. I am hoping these newer units will serve us well for many years. these units can become very expensive trying to keep up with current tech. Do these have any capabilities or do you have a recommended setup for these for driving in a large City. (Houston) i also drive out of the city to smaller towns as well. Thanks
My Uniden R3 gives more than enough range on Ka under most situation. Like Uniden R3 the Uniden R7 and all other radar detectors can fail to save you, especially at night and no traffic. About battery operated radar detectors? They actually stop scanning at times to preserve battery life, even if you can use a power cord with it? Makes little difference.
Hey what radar do you recommend for southern California ?? The Uniden R7 or Escort 360 c or. Radenso Pro M been watching your videos kind of hard to decide but would definitely like your opinion .
@Vortex Radar Does it matter where on the windshield you mount the detector height wise? I personally don't like mounting my V1G1 on the glass, but instead clip it onto the passenger sunshade while propping the shade so the detector hangs down level and fires right thru the front and rear glass. Would like to know in your experience if this influences detection at all with having it closer to the roof of the vehicle.

I used to be a range snob and had two segmented redlines (still have one). After all of the BSM junk on the road these days my priorities kind of shifted. I have a max 360c now and have been very happy with it. Almost forget it’s there sometimes. The redline was an amazing detector but thanks to manufacturers polluting the bands with warning systems they’ve rendered it almost useless unless you turn off k band. I’m hoping for a true redline replacement with BSM filtering since the Redline EX was a dud.

This is the first Vortex video that I've watched and I thought that I saw broadcast antennas on your test route. Broadcast signals, by virtue of signal strength and despite being at a much lower frequency, can cause many poorly-designed receivers to overload and could explain the erratic behavior on several detectors during several of the tests.
Just something to consider during testing...
Can you confirm that you IXc is actually defective?
So how does this work? Does it just tell you when cops are within a certain range?
With your testing how would you compare the range of the DFR9 to and Original Redline?
Incredible review but Im still torn! - do I go for an R3 with a Blendmount/Mirror tap for the same price of a R7?
