    You're somehow the only person I've seen use a large amount of contrast without having any blotchy spots. You're like a wizard

      I wasn't big on contrast paints initially because of exactly this reason...then I found the warhipster and learned how to properly use them and now my classic layer paints give me dirty looks when they see me

    That was awesome mate. I don't have the time to base, layer, shade and highlight and the contrast + method achieves a level of finish that looks amazing.
    Thanks for the in depth explanation and demo on a blood angel, I have an entire Leviathan box of them to paint in a few weeks!!
    Lobe the channel too, Warhipster is fast becoming my go-to for hints and tips.

      Absolutely! The interesting thing for me was the idea of doing the Firstborn the Classic way and then the Contrast+ way for Primaris boys. A subtle yet clear indicator of age and wear and tear between the two!

    I've painted my Blood Angels in a mix of oldschool dipping and the newer versions with the classic method, but I've decided to try my new Leviathan marines with your contrast tutorials. Wish me luck :)

  • @spacemanERAU
    @spacemanERAU ปีที่แล้ว +5

    First of all...I love them both! However, the way the panel lines and recesses pop with that classic method is what I love...wonder if it'd work to do something similar with the contrast method? Either way I think I have to start playing 40k now and get me some blood angels!

    Man, huge respect to you for these vids. I have both DA and BA in my pile of shame, and i was mulling over for a long time how I should do it: contrast or classic. No I think I will do DA with Caliban Green for this menacing look, but BA through contrast for more warmer feel
    Huge thanks!

    Very interesting comparison about the two approaches, intermediate phases, and results.
    I'm more inclined towards the Contrast+ recipe used for the Kruleboyz skareshields, with just Blood Angels Red, highlight (orange+yellow contrast is my favourite trick), and diluted Flesh Tearers Red glaze, as it gives a rich, vibrant red with just enough dark tones to it and very little hassle on edge highlights/transitions.
    Also, you want to do black areas fast? Vallejo's Dark Grey and a wash of Nuln Oil, it's almost magic.

    Please don't regard this as a negative comment, it really isn't! But I'd like to show you my appreciation in your review of the Vallejo Xpress and Speed Paints 2.0 unbiasly. I know you are supported by Games Workshop, and I don't know you personally, so it'd be easy to assume you'd disregard the other paints or say something negative just to keep in good graces with GW, but you didn't. You justifiably showed off the negatives in them (reactivations in Army Painter) and admitted the positives and what you liked about them (Vallejo Xpress). Thank you for having a good enough character to show us fans other options available and hear and understand why you prefer Contrast Paints to them. Cheers!

    • @Warhipster
      @Warhipster  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're very welcome buddy! The only thing I would say is, I make a point of not signing anything that ties me into a relationship that forces me to be positive to a fault. It's not the right thing for me and it wouldn't be the right thing for all of you! Ultimately I just want you guys to see stuff and how it works and then in anyway I can help you paint your miniatures and love what you do as much as I love what I do. I was sent the Army Painter stuff just as I have been sent GW Stuff. I'm currently writing a video that goes through all 3 of them shows the weaknesses of the style of painting as it is. and then asks the question of who are these things right for. Rather than which one is best. It's something I think is often lacking from Wargaming content and I do my best to try to be that voice!

    Great to see this type of comparison Josh. Was there a significant difference in the time it took to do each one? Personally I find a mixture of techniques works best for me - Contrast works brilliantly on textured surfaces, but for large areas or awkward colours I revert to classic

    I have a TON of bloody rose SOB to paint. I've done a few in the classic way but it just takes too long and I don't have that kind of time any more. The contrast+ way here would work perfect for them and should be nice and quick.

  • @waynejochmann260
    @waynejochmann260 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great tutorial! Have you given it a try with Blood Angels Red as a first coat and, on top of that, Flesh Tearers Red? Would be a great combo for a darker red. Adding in some recess shading, and I think I have my recipe for my BAs!

  • @Snapshot290

    Excellent paint jobs. I honestly prefer the more cold tone of the classic paint because it looks a bit more grimdark, whereas the warmth of the contrast makes me feel like its something out of a comic book. To each their own though they both look great!

    Which one is easier to paint for a beginner?

    • @Warhipster
      @Warhipster  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel like there's two answers to this question. Long term or short term. I think learning both recipes is a really good springboard for all beginners as one way teaches you how to paint bits you can't necessarily do with contrast like Metallics and the other teaches you how to practice getting that smooth coat on wider surfaces like armour. I learnt how to paint doing the classic way many many years ago. IS that right now? I'm not sure it is. Ultimately having a go is the best way to learn!
