Joey technically performed the best in this arc, He beat Valen on the first try, Kaiba Tied Alistair and Yugi straight up lost
So... actually, you can notice that Atem losing to Raphael is the only topic that was never made fun of. Every single little thing - absolutely, even minor and insignificant details. But this character arc stayed quite pure and faithful to the original.
I’d say that speaks a lot to how good that concept actually was.

It's hardly a spoiler when Dartz quite _literally_ (if incomprehensibly) said Atem's name several times in the previous episode.
I think people enjoyed Yugi losing to Raphael and what it led to, it's one of the most memorable moments of the series. The simple fact of it is on the actual show this season is a lot worse than the YGOTAS version, feels long and the Orichalkos guys are mostly very bland, especially Dartz. LK made them a lot more memorable and highlighted the emotional aspect of Yugi's and Yami's separation. Not to mention the resolution to the separation plot, Dartz's speech/Yami's response, makes a lot more sense here since YGOTAS Yami is hilariously self-centered so watching him reflect on his wrongs and admit he loves his friends feels rewarding, unlike the original series where he is quite noble to begin with tbh. Alsa Takahata101 as abridged Dartz, need i say more ?

Except in the *actual* original he was quite a sadistic asshole, even when “technically” doing the right thing. To the point where, after Yugi realized why exactly he had holes in his memories sometimes, got absolutely effing terrified of doing absolutely anything that might provoke his “dark self” into appearing. And only after an especially traumatic situation involving Mokuba did Atem realize that maybe murdering and/or torturing all his enemies isn’t such a good idea.

Which is canon to Season Zero manga, because it leads directly into Dual Monsters.
It stood out plus it added to The Pharaoh's history.
Season 4 (orichalcos arc) is pretty divisive. Some love it, some hate it.
The hatred is because of the plot holes (much more plot holes in the dub than in the sub), forgettable villains, animation inconsistencies (some shots are reeaally off model), and the fact that it doesn't tie back to ancient egypt.
Others love it because of the yugi and joey character development, a really, really cool idea in the seal of orichalcos and atlantean death cult, and some very memorable duels throughout. It's also where the concept of card archetypes really solidifies. Sure, there was blue eyes, toons, harpie ladies, amazoness, dark magician, etc - but this season really took it and made it a staple thing with vallon's armor cards, raphael's guardian monsters, and darts's orichalcos archetype. Everyone had a deck that represented them specifically- instead of just being a bunch of random cards with the same type or attribute, or a hodgepodge of different strategies and combos that only work if you open with the exact right cards.
This season also kind of fills in some gaps from the manga that the anime skipped over - like how before duelist kingdom yami yugi was essentially a serial killer. The anime skipped those early chapters so we never actually see what "evil" yami yugi looks like until this season. It also is probably the best representation of just how far joey has come as a duelist.
And while the change in mai's character doesn't make a lot of sense in the english dub, it makes more sense in the sub since the last season she was in a coma while her soul was being tortured - and joey fumbled hard when she woke up, making her feel alone and depressed.

I've been watching adult swim cartoons and I literally just discovered the origins of two two Yu-Gi-Oh abridged references in one day. Super mega ultra Chicken is aqua teen hunger Force and the chant of "Mecca Shiva Mecca Shiva" is from the venture Brothers.
Yeah LittleKuriboh/Martin had many struggles from 2019 to now. His battle with depression and health issues got a little worse, so it was hard for him to keep up with the episode uploads.
You should also check out the Bonds Beyond Time Abridged Movie. The original might’ve been taken down but there should be other videos of it.

I also recently found out on his latest lk watches GX that his father died not long ago. I love the man and feel for him. He's done so much for us over the years.

The funny thing, the animation is a big part of why people often criticize the later filler episodes. But man, it gets especially awkward in the next one.
No lie I honestly love the next arch specifically in the sub and I’m really hoping he is able to get the whole things done. I know he has his health issues to worry about so I get it if it takes a while but he’s made it this far so I’m just looking forward to the next episode
Yami swearing in this episode gets me every time
I think I saw the beginning of this arc (non-abridged) when it first aired, but definitely not all the way through. When I watched the abridged, this was the last episode, and I thought he was done with the series.
I love the Judas Priest callback right after the intro, its calling back to the "Marik's evil council" spinoff series LK did. Whenever it cut to Dartz' lame club, it would play The Hellion by Judas Priest, and the "DOUBLE FINE" i believe is an audio sample from Brütal Legend.

I personally really enjoyed this arc it did have some plot holes, but I personally enjoyed it a lot, and Yughio losing to Raphael was pretty cool not that we wanted him to loose it was just super surprising because we had gotten used to him being invincible. Also, amazing reaction.
Only 2 more episodes. I assume the next episode will come out around the middle or end of this year. I can't wait!

Most “beach episodes” seem to be a filler episode featuring some level of “fan service.” Like if you’re watching an anime with many love interest characters most of them will wear bikinis to the beach, except the shy quiet girl who goes with her school swimsuit. But yes, I understand what you mean.
The next Abridged Series should be Final Fantasy 7 Machinabridged by TFS.

Yami losing and losing Yugi's soul was the best part of the season. I feel like it had good ideas and themes, but it's riddled with nonsensical plot holes every episode.

Anyhow, Joey is really talented actually, unfortunately the story ,as I've said over and over , seems to make him, kaiba and even mai sometimes, lose games that ordinarily they would win because the story needs Yugi to be the one squaring off against that particular season's antagonist.

the Yugioh Manga fandom really like Junochi, and see him as a really respectable badass. though, in the anime's fandom, Joey (the dub's name for Junochi that most Yugioh anime fans see him as) see him as a joke character. i personally don't really have interest in him either way.
I didn't care for him at all in the dub, but when I watched the subbed version I learned to like him. First because he wasn't presented as a genius duelist like the others, so watching him overcome his struggles felt earned. Second because I think his Battle City arc was good, seeing him actively separate from Yugi to leave his shadow and grow on his own, every rare card he won became significant of his growth and at some point it felt noble that he saw those cards as him carrying the other duelists hopes to be better (even the "villains" like Weevil/Haga).
When he stands up in the duel with Odion/Rishid it was prove that even if he wasn't as polished as the other duelists, he had the spirit to keep going. When he "dies" to Marik you feel like he was robbed because he technically won the duel, his body just gave out. I remember it was very emotional for me when Yugi and Yami are mourning his death and Joey's spirit/memory asks "What is a true duelist?", that summed his arc so far for me, because you see what a long way he has come from the buffoon he was at the beginning. When Yugi and Yami get the vision of their future duel with him it really felt like the only motivation to continue the tournament despite all the bad things that had happened so far.
The moment I knew he had earned Yami's respect (not that he didn't have it, but this time it wasn't just for being his friend) was on the fourway duel, when Yami is trying to decide who to fight and ultimately decides to "keep my promise to a friend". I got chills. The dude literally had two other choices that would get him closer to his lost memories and he chose to set that aside and go to the semifinals with Jonouchi/Joey.
The next seasons did him dirty thought, he was just around getting on random duels that didn't felt like mattered, and on the last filler he was just disposed of. The last arc is so personal to Yami that I don't think anyone besides him and Yugi got any real development, and I won't really complain there too much.
This is not to nag you for not caring about his character or anything, you just reminded me of how I felt about him and I wanted to share, hopefully somebody else agrees :).

Yeah no, most people either didn't like or straight up hated this arc in the show. Bad animation, a billion plot holes, may's character reset after all the battle city growth with just "i won a lot but people were only talking about yugi and joey" as the excuse.
Some people like it, but it really is regarded as the worst part of the show by most, along with the grand pirx filler coming up next.
