    Interesting comparisons. This series should prove to be quite interesting. I did not realize that Victorinox made something in this same form factor. Victorinox was making "multitools" in the form of their folding knives long before Leatherman birthed the multitool craze. Victorinox was the original "multitool."

    • @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
      @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@QuantumPyrite_88.9 I gave credit where credit was due. I stand by my statement that Victorinox was the original multitool. It may or may not have had pliers but Victorinox has made available folding knives with a plethora of tools in each model *LONG* before Leatherman was even thought of. There may have been other makers as well but Victorinox Swiss Army Knives were the manufacturer that made multitools popular. I m in no way poo-pooing Leatherman. I own three or 4 Leatherman multitools personally.

      @@QuantumPyrite_88.9 Well not quite true, LM was the first one to successfully mass market them. Multitool wiki has a whole section called ''Before there was Leatherman'' (wiki.multitool.org/tiki-index.php?page=Before+there+was+Leatherman). The most famous was the Barnett tool at the end of the 19th Century. As to plagiarising, there was nothing to plagiarise as all the tools themselves already existed, in fact some of the tools on the Leatherman such as can opener are copies the Wenger or Camillus scout type can opener which had been around since the 1940s.
      Ultimately Victorinox have surpassed Leatherman in the field of pliers-based butterfly opening multitools too, with the Swisstool, which is better quality and more durable.

      @Far North Bushcraft And Survival, Lonnie, the Victorinox Swisstool is by far the best multi-tool on the market. I have all of the tools Felix demonstrates and prefer my Swisstool hands down. I’ve carried mine for almost 20 years and use it daily in the woods. A Swisstool, Morakniv and my SAK Hunter are the 3 main tools I have and use on a regular basis.

    • @WoodsmokeSelf-Reliance

      WRONG@@QuantumPyrite_88.9! Victorinox SAK knives have been around since 1884. The Swiss Army Knife IS the ORIGINAL multi-tool, and there is even a model with a set of mini pliers that far pre-dates the Leatherman. If anyone did any “plagiarizing” it is Leatherman.
      And for the record, the Leatherman PST (Pocket Survival Tool) - of which I have one of the first 100 initially made - was patented in 1980 and available for sale in 1983. 99 years AFTER the Swiss Army Knife (the original multi-tool) was invented.

    I started my knife-life as a huge Victorinox fan (you know, MacGyver). Then I learned about steels, locking mechanisms, manufacturers, clips and all the bells and whistles and invested into expensive reputable brands. Then I realized I will never feel prepared without a Vic and went full circle back. The quality you get for such a small amount of money is hard to beat!

    A file is designed to cut in one direction and a sawing motion is the quickest way to dull it.
    Btw the best file you'll ever find on a multitool is on the original 1990's Gerber MP.
    The file was made by Simon's, and is the only multitool file I know of that was actually made by a file manufacturer.

    I've had my Victorinox Swisstool for 15 years and it's still in excellent condition. It is very solid and hefty so I've used it to hammer things many times. I've pried so much stuff I shouldn't have with the tools and I thought it would mess up the opening/locking mechanism, but every tool still opens and closes like new. The Victorinox is an excellent tool and might even be better than the Leatherman.

      @@QuantumPyrite_88.9 My Swisstool Spirit (I choose it over the larger Swisstool, after having considered the weight difference - and the tools I'm likely to actually use!) isn't that much younger - and I love it, too! :)
      However, I found that a multitool is somewhat on the big-and-heavy side for being at hand on a daily basis. It does reside in my EDC kit on the bottom of the backpack I carry around - but I found a need for a pocket knife to be with me all the time, and be momentarily available. And guess what... this means another two Victorinox knives, one keychain-sized for daily use, and a larger, locking-blade Sentinel for outdoor trips.
      Currently I'm having an eye for a multitool for a lady, but honestly, as much as I love Victorinox, I feel this time it is likely to be a Leatherman (looking towards the Skeletool series here - I'm suggesting her to go for a lightweight tool).

      There isn't really much left to do in that field, except for making tools one handed opening, they are already outside accessible. The individual tools themselves are as good as it gets. Anything else is really just a novelty - like the Leatherman Signal with removable firestriker/whistle and sharpener, and beneath Victorinox. Having said that I think it would be amazing if they made something tiny along the lines of the Squirt, and something comparative to a Juice, with two alox SAKs as handles, that would be a dream multitool for me!

  • @bangalorebobbel
    @bangalorebobbel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Felix, great comparision, and the winner was very clear. Thanks a lot!
    But I have to say, that I do not totally agree with a tool as you suggested, means a Victorinox with a diamond side comparable to the leatherman. The reason is: according to my experience, diamond pads tend to wear off very fast, if you use them regularly. It does not make sense to me to have a multitool, which should usually last for decades, with a tool fixed on it which wears off maybe in half a year of use. I know many people do not use any of the tools of a multitool more than once in a year or so, and a diamond pad/file would be good for their whole lifetime, but there are also plenty of users which use their multitools regularly, and even most of the tools there. So I would always recommend to keep such a wear-off-tool either totally separate or at least exchangeable.
    So, my idea would be: additionally to the extra tools for the Swisstool and the pouches for all that stuff which already exist one could also develop some further tools with a focus on wear-off-tools, like e.g. a two sided diamond pad (in two grades, of course), a firesteel, and so on, ... and if required a bigger pouch or so ;-)
    Best regards, Robert

    • @FelixImmler
      @FelixImmler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Robert! danke für Deinen super Interessanten Hinweis!! Ich habe auch schon öfters festgestellt, dass Diamantfeilen nach kurzer Zeit viel an Abtragsleistung verlieren. Meine Erfahrung ist, dass sich dann aber die Leistung Diamantpads einpendelt und man lange Zeit damit Werkzeuge schleifen kann. Die Optimal Lösung steckt eingentlich im Leatherman Surge, wo die Diamantfeile auswechselbar ist. Einen neue Feile kostet bei Leatherman 10 Dollar.

    • @bangalorebobbel
      @bangalorebobbel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FelixImmler Ja Felix nach dem ersten Abrieb gehen die Diamant-Dinger schon noch eine ganze Weile mit halber Kraft, aber wenn man halt viel damit macht sind sie irgendwann wirklich alle. Das geht manchmal relativ rasch, ich denke das hat nicht nur mit den Diamanten sondern auch dem Trägermaterial zu tun.
      Eine auswechselbare Feile ist ok, die Frage ist aber halt nur, ob man wirklich jedes Werkzeug auch im Multitool verstauen muss, oder ob es nicht auch als externes Zubehör geht. Und ob das nicht sogar besser ist, das extern zu halten. Ratschen oder Bits und so weiter hat man ja auch separat, warum nicht auch so typische Verschleißteile ...
      Es gibt ja beispielsweise auch schon einen Diamant-Messerschärfer (4.3311) von Victorinox, der nicht nur zum Messerschärfen sondern auch für manche andere Tasks sehr gut taugt und den man gut als Ergänzung zum Swisstool benützen kann, aber er ist halt etwas zu klobig (der Griff stört), um ihn auch gemeinsam mit dem Swisstool in einer Pouch unterzubringen ... eine in Größe und Form genau angepasste Version wäre super.
      Ich bin oft am Überlegen, was ich wirklich am Messer haben möchte und was eigentlich lieber separat sein sollte. Nicht nur wegen Verschleiß und einfachem Austausch, gibt manchmal auch praktische Gründe. Ich finde zum Beispiel die Zangen am Handyman oder Ranger etc. nicht schlecht und benütz die auch oft (meist um Dornen aus meinen Schuhsohlen zu ziehen ...), aber oft bräuchte ich halt die Zange, um irgendwas zu halten, was ich dann mit einem anderen Werkzeug (Messer, Feile, Säge etc.) bearbeiten möchte. In solchen Situationen macht es ja keinen Sinn, Zange und die anderen Werkzeuge untrennbar voneinander an einem Werkzeug zu haben. Also nehm ich beispielsweise fast immer auch noch die kleine Knipex Cobra 125 mit, obwohl ich ja schon am Messer eine Zange hätte ... Manchmal ist das Multitool auch einfach zu "bollerig" für Feinarbeiten - oder die Tools sind so ungünstig angebracht, dass der Griff des Tools bei der Arbeit immer im Weg ist.
      Aber ok, das führt langsam zu weit ... könnte man ja stundenlang sinnieren ... ;-)
      LG, Robert

  • @P_RO_
    @P_RO_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Anyone can make a decent knife and pliers, but making really good files is almost an art, requiring perfect hardening and tempering. Look at the file after using it on tool steel- if you see scratches the file is too soft, and most of these are. Gerber isn't what they used to be; the old Gerber files were excellent and the Leatherman has always been good. Never tried a Victorinox but I will when I get a chance.

    -Review how quickly you can open a tool from each type/manufacturer (spring tension, location, indexing, ect.)
    -maximum torque for each types' screwdriver (how far into hard wood can you drive a screw with each type)
    -strength of the plier bite
    -maximum thickness/strength wire each cutter can cut
    Cheers! 🍻

    Once again you and your film crew deliver a very good and informative video. This knowledge saved me today since a very stubborn and stripped philips screw did not want to come out. Thanks to Victorinox Swiss Tool X’s metal file I could screw it slowly out. Leathermans metal file is not that aggressive as you say. How is the metalfile on the 91mm SAK’s compared to Swiss Tool X?

    I have a leatherman classic and the Gerber, I like that the classic leatherman has stronger components in general, and replaceable cutting edges for the wire cutter, but it's not comfortable to use. The Gerber is great in that I can operate it single handed and for this reason, I usually carry my gerber. Only when I know I will be cutting a lot of wire, say mending fences, or a lot of prying, will I purposely choose the leatherman to put on my belt. Another great video thank you

    I prefer the Victorinox because I find them to be more comfortable than the other two, it looks classy as hell, and I prefer the actual knife blade style and steel over the other two. Just have always had and easier time getting them sharp compared to the blades of the other two.
    I can definitely say the leatherman is incredibly close and you will not go wrong either way. And a victorinox can be just as versatile if you know how to use it and depending on the model you are using.

    I know there are more models but i am curious about the Leatherman ST 300.I think it has great quality price rate but Victorinox should earn more popularity too. I have non pliers victorinoxes and LEatherman wingman and love to have them both for outdoors. Just if one day i can buy one multitool with pliers, good knife, mini saw i really will hesitate between LEatherman and Swistool if i had to put let s say 100 euros (living in EU). By the way, do your L Surge got the mecanism for changing the screwdrivers where u can put a T shape saw blades from electrical jigsaws? This, i think is a major consideration as u can by good blades for reasonable price and use them. Thank you Felix for your useful and authentical videos :) MErci and Danke

    I own several leathermen, but bought the victorinox spirit for the great reviews.
    My favorite remains the Surge leatherman, because it is more robust.
    As for limes, on the surge they can be exchanged for little money when consumed. because limes wear out enough, both on leatherman and victorinox.
    Regarding the performance, I must say that victorinox has a more aggressive file at the beginning of leatherman (surge and wave for example).
    but it tends to mellow a little faster than the leatherman.
    So they end up being similar.
    The best file I have seen, superior even to victorinox, is that of a 1994 PST leatherman. After 25 years it is still perfect.
    In my opinion it is the result of a better quality metal heat treatment than modern multitools.
    However victorinox spirit is a multitool of incredible quality and workmanship. With a very sturdy pliers.
    Leatherman is less refined but of equal quality and more versatile and comfortable.
    both multitools are great. in my opinion superior to Gerber or sog.
    Congratulations for the video and your enthusiasm !!!

  • @n8mayfield

    This is why I switched to the Victorinox years ago from Leatherman. While I still carry the Surge for that reason of the diamond file, and it will also take a hack saw blade, I’ve found the pliers to be inadequate for most tasks that I’d use pliers for. So I chose Knipex and my Swiss Champ instead, covers pretty much everything

    Fascinating comparison and very well done, my friend. I EDC a multi-tool, the SOG Powerlock. I have had it and carried it continuously for about 15 years, even sent it back twice to the factory for repairs which were free as it has a lifetime warranty. I own the Swisstool, the Leatherman, and Gerber tools also. I am looking forward to this series. BTW, what do you think of building your own multi-tool by putting together the best components of all of them into one tool? I have thought of doing this. It would require some reshaping of the individual tools, especially where they fasten and lock, but I think it could be done. Best regards, James Bender

    Tests très intéressants, cher Felix. J'avais essayé de couper des petits tubes en fer et en aluminium avec la scie du Workchamp et celle du Rebar. La scie du Victorinox a coupé les deux tubes sans altération des dents. Celle du Leatherman n'est pas parvenue à couper le tube en aluminium et montrait une forte usure des dents. Cette vidéo doit traîner sur ma chaîne. J'ai été très déçu par ce résultat auquel je ne m'attendais pas. La conclusion est évidente : ne pas se laisser emprisonner sans son Victorinox (pour scier les barreaux) ! :)

    Yes Felix, I have most models of Leatherman's, a few Gerber's, and a few SOG multi tools! I have only one of the Victorinox multi tools which I consider superior in quality to most, except for the overall Leatherman's! The steel used in making Leatherman multi tools is some of the best! It's so good it's hard to make them rust! I purchased a group of knives that included a Leatherman super tool, one of the early ones, and it must have been exposed to salt water! All the tools were frozen in place! I used every method available to free up all the tools including CLR, boiling water, oil soak, you name it! In the end, it freed up completely, and showed no rust! That's the quality of American steel! Thanks for the excellent review!

      @aerocap 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FelixImmler Hi, I'm a subscriber from longtime enough on your channel to be aware that you know better multitools than most of us and that the claim of "quality of American steel" will not fool you nor anyone experienced here. Leatherman steel do actually rust (and breaks!) The Victorinox one doesn't. It might rather bend as their alloy is kind of flexible. To me, and for most of the owners opinions, Swisstools are the best, no question. But I still agree with you regarding the innovation.
      My ultimate multitool would be a full size Swisstool assembled by screws instead of rivets for the layers to be customizable, and with an available t-fixation-tool like Leatherman implemented for standard jigsaw blades.
      Thanks much for your videos and tips, may Victorinox hear our wishes 🙏😊

    Excellent demonstration and I learned something about my Leatherman file; that it has a sawing capability on the edge. I just didn't pay attention. My question; does the Victorinox Swiss Tool lock each tool in place like the Leatherman does? I generally carry both my Leatherman Wave and my Victorinox Trekker when I hike. I think the wood saw is better on the Trekker and the knife is better too. But, when I am doing honest-to-goodness chores that require a safe and capable tool that I can use muscle with, I always use the Leatherman. This is primarily because the Leatherman locks the tools in place. Does the Swiss Tool lock the tools in place with a reliable locking mechanism?
