    This channel is really not about "you" and what "you" want... Its about hunting. I never mention politics, but hell it is a free country (for now), and I care deeply about the direction its going. Wearing my favorite shirts while Im in a video is not a political statement of any kind, its just who I am. A patriot who loves his country, cops, thinks every life matters, and despises fraud, and the blocking of free speech. I would never try to demand you dress a certain way... Its just a funny shirt. You should laugh at it rather than melt. Im sick of my freedoms being taken away, and really, this channel is for those who want to watch. No one is making you watch. If you hate the country, and hate who I am, so be it... But HATERS are not going to force me to change who I am or hide it. I love you no matter what shirt you wear, and even if you hate our police, hate our constitution, support fraud, etc... Those are your choices, and a lot of great Americans died so you could have the right to speak up about trying to end those rights and support socialism. #justgivepeaceachance #coexist

      Totally agree. To many, are afraid to say, this is what I think. We all have opinions. Let’s try to live in peace, (don’t see that happening). That’s why I love bow hunting so much, the woods are filled with great peace.

      I agree, Dan. I'm sick and tired of these professional whiners and complainers. They see some malicious INTENT in everything because they are in a perennial state of victimhood. Everything they see becomes another example of something being done "TO" them. So instead of YOUR shirt being about what YOU want to wear for YOUR OWN enjoyment, to THEM it's something you're doing TO THEM with THEM in mind. These people very literally want thoughts and actions controlled according to THEIR own views of right and wrong. They do not want it to be a PERSONAL choice, but rather something deriving from the GROUP. They have little use for the INDIVIDUAL, because they see the individual as being a bad thing. They want everyone to bow to the COLLECTIVE according to rules they THEY make. You're dead right that our freedoms are being whittled away year by year. We better stand our ground or we'll never get it back.

    The best camo brand out there is called “Stop moving!” The fact that a hunter can be dressed in a solid orange vest/jacket/hat and not be seen by deer within bow range squashes and camouflage theories. Also, observing air currents is another “make you invisible” camo that I wouldn’t walk into the woods without. Oh how this activity changed when commerce discovered money in the pockets of hunters.

    Personally I've noticed that when you get on the ground inside thick brush where you hardly even have shooting room you can blend in so well that only your scent would give you away. Hunting in a tree, try hanging an outfit (pants and shirt) up there on a clothes hanger and stand down on the ground 15 yards away and see how well it blends in. If you recognize it then the deer also recognize it because they live there. Personally I'd like to have an oak tree bark looking outfit for the late season so that i could look like part of the tree trunk. I think a lot of the time late season in a bare tree that your movement is picked off from a long way off and you don't even see the deer.

I have had deer within 10 steps walk by without ever seeing me. Every time I was picked off was due to movement on my part not the brand Camo I was wearing. Great video I agree wholeheartedly. 👍👍

    My Dad is a Vietnam vet and used to hunt in military Camo called tigerstripe. It is a tight pattern mix of greens and some black, vertical and horizontal. If he was not moving, you could not see him at any distance, on the ground. Most modern Camo patterns are designed to be appealing to us consumers. To deer, it’s all about breaking up your outline, and staying still. Great comment on prey species noticing a predator’s eyes. When I get busted, I feel they are seeing my eyes, and will squint until the deer relaxes enough for a shot.

    • @Rhallifax2
      @Rhallifax2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tigerstripe has horizonal stripes. It works great for a certain type of vegetation. This time of year, where I live, the woods are mostly a vertical pattern with the leaves all gone. Anyway, I don't think you can get the tigerstripe anymore, and the origional was made with an off brand of dye that faded.... too bad.

  • @fishlovme
    @fishlovme 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think scent and how much you move if the deer does see you is way more important than the type of clothing you're wearing. I've set a deer blind out in the middle of a field once and the buck noticed the camo blind right away and just stared at it but didn't spook. Not until it got downwind of me did it finally take off.

  • @Intimidator82
    @Intimidator82 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That is a very good point about having 3 different types of camo/coloring. One of the most important things I look for in camo is how quiet it is when moving, i.e. drawing a bow, shouldering a gun. I hunt pines and hardwoods so I use a darker pattern when in the pine trees

    I'm sold on the uv glow thing. Other than that I agree all camo works in the surroundings it blends, I'm old enough to remember when Tre Bark came out, and thought I was becoming invisible, only to be busted. Back in those days I'd soak in baking soda, for 30-45 minutes before getting dressed in Tre Bark washed in laundry detergent. I'd carry baking soda mixed with water and mist me ever so often. When the uv killer stuff came out, the getting busted slowed waaay down. All that said still Mossy oak fan, they seem to have been more diverse in camo schemes, which I remember ticked Realtree off. At the end of the day a whitetail lives by his NOSE. Thanks Dan, like the shirt dude

    In my experience, it’s camo that breaks up your silhouetted outline that works the best. I’ve found ASAT camo does that the best. I learned this still hunting around cattle. The cattle never really cared about any other camo pattern I wore.
    If they saw me move, they stay focused on me, even when I stood still. But when I wore the ASAT pattern head to toe, the cattle would notice me move, then when I stood still, they would lose focus on me. It was really an eye opener, because these cattle would start panicking when I would stand still. They would start mooing and pacing around, and even start moving toward the direction where they last saw me move.
    The same started happening around deer too. One time I was still hunting and jumped a doe and fawn, and they bounded to the top of a hill. The doe stopped to look back at me, and she could no longer see me because I was still. And that doe walked all the way back down to me until she was about 30 yards from me when she finally caught my scent and booked it. It was pretty incredible!

  • @michaelpatrick6840
    @michaelpatrick6840 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Based on my experience I feel like I get caught moving before my camo gives me up. I have my favorites, but I don’t believe one pattern works the best throughout the entire fall. It’s more important to blend into your surroundings than believing one size fits all. I love all your t-shirt Dan, even the ones that do not align with my views. I’ll be man enough to stop watching before I get offended and start complaining. I’ll bitch about politics on the appropriate sites. Great info as usual and I always look forward to the next show. I started hunting deer when I was 10. That’s 46 years ago. I remember starting out we didn’t have much and we tried to blend in with whatever we had. All my clothes had to be multi purpose, work, school, hunting etc. My dad always preached you have to be in the right place at the right time and be still. Learn how to read the woods. I’ve managed to take multiple deer every year with minimal equipment. I basically wear flannel shirt and brown or drab colored pants and I always wear a headnet. I hunt on the ground with a 12ga single shot shotgun. If he get his ass 50 yards or closer he’s dead. Don’t overthink it. Dan speaks the truth. Listen to him and learn his hunting tactics. After all my time in the woods I think he’s the real deal. Thanks Dan for all you do.

    I always wear different pants, top, gloves and headgear to help break up my silhouette. After over 50 years of deer hunting I don't think camo is necessary. Any pattern or solids in different shades of tans/browns/grays works well in my experience. Like you, I like flannels but again in those earth tone colors. When I do use camo I mix patterns and use only Realtree and/or Mossy Oak. Spending more on camo in the mountains of Virginia where visibility is short range is a waste of time and money from what I've found.

  • @tommygunrva

    I've been feeling that way this season. I needed better cold weather rain gear this year, and I found a good deal on a full kit, so I picked it up. But, wearing all of it at once, I've started to feel like I'm sticking out like a sore thumb. Lately, I've been thinking about throwing the heavy grey flannel over it, or picking up a decent vest with a totally different pattern, and wearing my cat-tail hoodie under that. I was second guessing that thought process a bit, until just now. I'm hitting it again tomorrow, and I'm gonna mix it up some. Thanks Dan!

    The political state in America is sickening but that’s another subject and channel.
    I totally agree on the camo, the key is to break up the human outline and hide the face, in my opinion no one makes a good camo because it’s the same from head to toe, like Dan says he wares different pants, jackets, vests etc., me too, if deer look at me I squint my eyes so they can’t see a face or I hold my bow in front of my face.
    They never look at your boots or your belt, it’s always right to your face !

    I was looking for something I could add or disagree on, but you covered it all from at least my 'older guy' experience. Movement is huge, that's why saddle hunting sucks (there! I said it!!!) I actually use a saddle past 2 seasons, and now going back to my LW climber, saddle requires movement, & doesn't offer an equitable weight or packability advantage (my personal opinion, depends on pressure, location, gristle of the hunter etc...maybe advantage for some guys, just not for me).

    I think it's more of a shade thing with camo. But the more open concept camos like natural gear definetly do blend in. A lot of camos at 40 yards look like a dark blob. The more open patterns don't look quite like a blob.

    I don’t have a ton of experience but have about it long and hard. Agree with most of Dans opinions, I’ve found that the shade of your background or nearby objects really is the most important thing. If your camp is dark but your khaki pants are the same shade as the dirt along a stream bank, your better off with the khaki. I do use the macros such as Predator and big pattern flannel but feel these work better in open areas or when skylit. Against a tree or rock a solid or bark pattern is fine. Mix it up agreed, I often wear snow camp on bottom when hunting against trees in the snow.

    Agreed there is no one size fits all with camouflage. You need multiple colors, patterns, and warmth/comfort levels to be effective and consistent in taking game animals. Most major camo brands have a lot of money tied up into sponsorships and advertising so they have their brand pushed by big names. Just need to go with your gut and wear what is needed to blend in.

    In one of your videos interviewing Andre camo gets discussed, and (if my memory is correct) he said he likes an olive drab or something similar, and that he feels as though the solid color can actually help hide your movement because there isn't a streak of pattern moving across the deer's vision. In this context I believe he was referring to the small movements you might make in a tree (as opposed to walking across a hillside, etc). I didn't see the vid on your channel so must've come across it on the beast forum. I got some olive drab wool overalls for christmas and I'm a little apprehensive about using them in a deciduous tree, but only time will tell.

    I think what a lot of people fail to mention during this conversation is the eyesight of all the other animals in the woods not just the deer. Everyone likes to talk about a deer eyesight. But even if a deer is colorblind and can't see your bright color the turkeys and other animals can see those colors and will quickly ruin your deer hunt for you.

    I'm kind of old school and I have to agree with you 100% And I do try to split my camo from the upper body and lower body into different patterns or like you said I've killed more deer in a flannel than I ever have in camo now the actual pattern I like is the old school tree bark I think I had more deer within 10 ft of me and never saw me in that pattern it just seemed to really work well

    Just so you know, born in 1946 and from my youth I always wear jeans and some times jean shirt. Hunting in no camo and I still got what I was hunting. So for me camo really do not matter. You go ahead and buy the expensive camo all you want it doesn't matter. LOL

    This is an interesting view on camo I've never heard before when you talked about mixing it up to keep yourself small. The biggest thing that surprised me though was the comment about wearing blue jeans. I've watched a video once about a study on a deers sight and how the color blue sticks out like a sore thumb. Then again, I am not a scientist and just have to take their word for it. But what I also heard in that video was a deers ability to pick up movement. I absolutely believe this. Anyway, another great vid. I enjoy listening to your hunting experiences and try to apply them to my hunts as much as possible. BTW....Love the shirt!!

      I wanted to say somthing about blue jeans in the video, but forgot... I have never had a problem with dark blue new jeans... But over the years I have noticed faded denim getting picked off a lot.

    Great information. For myself being more of a waterfowl hunter. It has been how to break up shadows. When it comes to camo for any hunting. It is about being still. what will your camo choice can do for you. I am learning this again about deer hunting watching your videos. Wisconsin archery 2021 I'll see more deer from the lessons I've learned from your videos guaranteedand.

    I think it’s worth saying that the camouflage meaning the pattern should be separated from the quality of material. Some of the big brand camo companies are where they are because the quality of material allows your to extend your hunts or range because you have functional equipment.

    A company called Atsko makes a camo pattern blaze orange vest. Its a subtle pattern to the human eye but looks camo to the deer. They also make scent free detergent that removes UV brighteners in your clothing. Run a black light over it, it makes a difference.

    Being camouflaged is necessary, but using camo isn't. My dad has a pair of grey coveralls and they blend in perfectly with poplar trees. Between him and myself those coveralls have shot dozens of deer. You don't always need to buy crazy expensive clothes to hunt.

    I killed my buck this year with my camo hoodie laying on the ground at the base of the tree. I carried it in so I wasn't sweating and it fell out of my harness when I was setting up and i didn't want to go down and get it. I was in just a tan thermal on top, so its all about movement.

    I personally don’t buy into the whole camo hype. I have a family member who swears that you MUST HAVE camo on during archery season. That’s a well and good, to each his/her own on it.
    I think its over rated and in alot in some cases it’s expensive.
    I do have and wear camo but in Pa you have to wear 250 sq in of blaze orange on head, chest and back during gun season. So i wear what ever and a blaze orange vest.

    Finally, someone who confirms what I have been saying for years. No camo is good in all situations. I have been mixing and matching camo since I began bow hunting 43 years ago. It helps break up the human outline. I also could not care less about camo loyalty. I use what I think is going to help me blend in the area I'm hunting. Thanks for the great content Dan and keep the videos coming. I enjoy them very much.

    This year my magic shirt has been a pink orvis long sleeve. Any time I've worn that as an outer layer its like I'm completely invisible to every buck I've seen. At one point I had 8 right around me all in bow range and none saw me even though the only tree I could get in was branch and leafless

      Agree with this. And having "negative space" or a number of light areas in it is important as well. I was in the middle of a path in an open field wearing leafy camo (and head net) like that and had a doe flummoxed as to what I was and kept scanning near me as you could tell she couldn't get a bead on me. I became a believer

Heard deer walking towards us so I sat down in the long grass against a tree . The doe and a 4year old buck walked 15 feet in front of us. They stopped and looked and kept walking .

    I kinda think it does matter, the 20th was the last day of gun season in Ohio and here comes 3 does ... I had a good wind but at 10 yards they seen me cause of the solid orange jacket I had on. Of course they spotted me and went back the way they came and out pops the biggest buck I've ever seen...smh if the does wouldn't have spotted me I'm positive he would have walked past me at 10 feet but he cuts across the field at 157 yards...that dang solid color owell,I have muzzleloader season coming up and I will be in a stand next time cause I was on the ground. Love your videos bub

    Excellent video Dan. I’ll admit I fell victim to signing my life over to a certain camo pattern but with that being said I did not choose that camo pattern for no good reason. It worked, works, and probably still work till I die in my specific application. If I get an opportunity to hunt in some different terrain features I may invest in a different pattern if the investment is worth it.

    If you're going to be walkin' & stalkin', poundin' the ground sitting up against a tree or some natural formation, yeah...camo works. If you're going to be sitting inside of a ground blind or 20' up in a tree stand, you don't need camo.
    All you need to so is to break up the big blob of color that is a human being with some sort of pattern be it an nice old school vintage plaid jacket like the old timers wore (yep...the original camo) or some cheap Walmart Mossy Oak/Realtree gear or the Gucciflage they sell nowadays with exotic names.
    Two things I'd never wear to hunt; "Deer Hide" brown Carhartt or blue jeans. The Carhartt might make you look like a monster buck to another hunter and the color "blue" sticks out to deer like neon.
    Ironically, if you're dressed in civilian gear and come across deer, 9 times out of 10, they won't bolt. You could just be a hiker to them or completely harmless, but if you're a camo'd out blob and they can't make you out immediately? That's when they get spooked. However, 10 times out of 10, if you don't move and you're not wearing Old Spice after shave, they'll hang around you.
    I've had deer literally brush up against me while I was sitting on a stump in the dark at 4:30 in the morning and had them walk up to me within 12" in broad daylight while I was on the ground in camo or in earth tones because I was disciplined with both movement and with my scent elimination game.
    But I'd never hunt deer in regular pants and a hoodie because I hunt from the ground so I'd just be asking to get busted and where I hunt, the Catskills Region of New York, I rarely can get a shot passed 50 or 60 yards and I don't do ground blinds or tree stands. My "blind" is whatever fallen monster of a tree I choose to hunker down with for the day.

    If you look back at the "deer killing days" with meat pokes with 20 to 30 deer hanging on them the hunters are all wear red and black flannels. I guess bc I have always worn camo I am scared away from not wearing it lol. But like Dan I have pictures of my father in blue Jean's and flower patterned shirts in nature colors. Good luck to everyone and remember you only have to motify something if it doesnt work
